I purchased my dad a gift card for father's day and we just used it this weekend while I was visiting NJ. I have a food blogger friend who did a segment on Gladstone Tavern so I had it on my radar for a while. After visiting an alpaca farm in the area we stopped in for lunch on Saturday around 12. I did make a reservation the day before because I wasn't sure how busy they would be but the reservation was not necessary. We were promptly greeted and sat at an inside table. A nice gentleman brought us waters and then Hunter took care of us. He provided great service. I started with the corn chowder soup. While it was good, it was kind of basic and I had higher expectations for it. I then had the chicken schnitzel which came with a caper sauce, arugula and tomatoes. It was soooo good! If I ordered it again I would ask for some extra of the caper sauce. My mom had a burger that came with fresh cut fries and my dad has the steak and eggs. All of us really enjoyed our meals and the overall experience. We would recommend. read more

It's been more than a few years since we've been to Gladstone Tavern because we've moved a dozen miles or so north to Morristown, but a recent dinner at Gladstone Tavern reminded me that it's still well worth the trip over the twisty-windy backroads. Located in a restored 1847 colonial farmhouse, it offers a perfect balance with a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere and top notch service and food. I really appreciate how they strive to incorporate locally-sourced ingredients in the menu whenever possible; you can definitely taste the freshness. I also have to mention that their seasonal cocktail menu is definitely worth checking out. Since it's in season, we started with the freshly flash-fried asparagus tempura ($15) appetizer. It was very tasty and well-presented, with a portion size was perfect for sharing. For my entrée, I ordered the tempura shrimp bowl ($27), a southwestern-inspired dish with four perfectly fried tempura shrimp over a bed of frisee and farro, topped with charred corn and avocado. It was incredibly tasty and way more filling than I expected. My dining companion selected the jambalaya ($28), a cajun-inspired treat packed with shrimp, andouille sausage, and chicken. She absolutely loved it and brought half of it home to enjoy for lunch the next day. A special shout-out to our server, Chris. Even though he's only been there a few days, he was fantastic and made us feel like guests for a meal in his home -- attentive, friendly, and totally on top of everything. The bartenders at this restaurant give the worst service of any restaurant I have been to. I usually go by myself so I don't go to a table. The food is good, so time and time again I will still go, even though the bartender service is terrible. Until today, I sat at the bar for over seven minutes. First time here in a looong time. The ambiance is great- fireplace was on. We ordered a couple of drinks. Beer & Manhattan. Both were delicious. We shared a special pear w/blue cheese salad to start. They brought out the salad on two plates. The salad was fresh and excellent. I ordered the shrimp tempura bowl which excellent but could have used a few more shrimp but was fresh and tasty. My wife have the Branzino which was also excellent. For desert, we shared a banana crunch which was large so we were glad we shared. Service was excellent! The food was good however, We were disappointed with the service. Our waiter disappeared for long periods and we had to get another waiter to find him. Also the air conditioner was not functioning or insufficient and it was actually hot in the restaurant and when asked about it we were told that it was 68 in there- not true we were very uncomfortable and it was cooler outside! We ordered ice cream for dessert and it was brought to us melted. Not sure if it was because of the heat or the fact that the waiter left it sitting while he disappeared! read more

I came here after attending a off road event at Hamilton Farm, the US Equestrian Team Headquarters in Gladstone, We were looking for a quick simple meal. The Gladstone tavern is a cozy restaurant, we had great service and the food was very good. It's spacious, has ample parking, nice outdoor seating with heaters on the porch. All of the dishes we ordered were excellent. We had the tavern burger and the grilled chicken sandwich. For desert we had the chocolate chunk cookie which is a Jacque Torres recipe. It's warm and very tasty. Our waiter recommended the ice cream toasted coconut, pretzel-chip, it was awesome. They offer a wide variety of salads, entrees, desert, wines, beer liquors. They appear to do a lot of catering and have live music at certain times. This was not a planned visit and I would definitely go back. Everyone wax courteous, the restaurant is very clean, and it looks like it would be a nice place to relax when there is live music. I would definitely recommend them. read more

This was in an old-fashioned farmhouse with a rustic setting. There was a small bar upon entering and a section in the back for private events it looked like. The menu offered seasonal American comfort food with a few twists sprinkled in. The service was solid, and the food came out in a timely manner. I went with the tavern burger ($22). It was local pasture raised beef that was grounded in house daily with cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles on a toasted brioche bun with fries. I opted for the burger to be cooked medium rare and it was more on the medium side. Overall, this was okay. The patty was of good size but lacked much seasoning. It helped that the other toppings were present. The fries were very tasty as they were seasoned appropriately and fried to perfection. I also tried the bear sandwich which had braised short rib, cherry pepper, mushroom, onion, and provolone on a garlic toasted roll. This was very tasty. The cherry pepper really made the entire dish I thought. Another item I tried was the chilaquiles. There was something that threw me off here and I believe it was the salsa verde. The people who had this at my table did enjoy it though. Will I go back? Probably. read more

Interesting setting. Looks like a house converted into a restaurant. We sat in the back room on the left just to the right of the fireplace with a window looking into the backyard. Our server was very funny, and I'll say he was about 15% over the top in terms of trying to yuck it up with us. Am sure a lot of people wouldn't have appreciated the constant jokes. My choice was the wedge salad. It was good however, I wish there had been more blue cheese, and it had hardly any red onions so he brought me more which was very nice. The bacon was way overcooked and I like crispy, well-done bacon, however this was well beyond that. It also needed a little more tomato to compensate for the serious dryness of the bacon. It's a decent choice in a small town that doesn't have many options. read more

Five stars for the Gladstone Tavern! It's a perfect spot for lunch with friends, dinner with family, or drinks at the bar. It's in a renovated 19th century farmhouse with lots of different rooms. It offers cozy seating spaces, a front and back patio, beautiful wood and stone details, and warm lighting. The food is top notch and the menu is seasonally inspired. I love that ingredients are sourced from individual farms and that herbs are grown in the restaurant's garden. This restaurant is accommodating to diners with specific food preferences and allergies. They made my friend's meal the way she asked for it to be specially prepared due to her food allergies. I've been here a few times and look forward to returning. Staff has been consistently attentive and helpful. I appreciated our server today, Mark, especially. He has an upbeat and friendly way about him and made our lunch extra enjoyable. On our way home from south Jersey, we were looking for a nice place to stop for dinner. I had Gladstone Tavern bookmarked for quite a while, so it was a good opportunity to stop here. Since it was a hectic day, the first thing I liked is that this restaurant is located in a quiet location with plenty of parking. We made a reservation for outside seating which was perfect on this June evening. The food was very good. My wife especially enjoyed her Chicken Schnitzel entree. I went with the baked pasta special which had broccoli rabe and sausage, my in-laws each had burgers. It took a little while for the food to be served, but that wasn't a problem since it was so nice out. All in all, this was a good find and a perfect spot for us to enjoy dinner! read more

A cozy experience at Gladstone. My party of 3 decided to dine in the bar area on the high tops near the from windows. It's a bit cramped, and I'd recommend just having 2 tables over there than 3. But overall comfortable. The bartender was kind and helped us out in a gracious manner. All of our drinks were great. Though through the night when it got busy, I think there needed to be another bartender to help her out. Someone in the party ordered the split pea soup, and it was delicious! She said "it reminds me of my mother's" so I think that's a great sign. The wedge salad had fresh ingredients and the bacon was unique compared to other wedges with their slab bacon. I ordered the short rib pasta, and gosh it was delicious. All of the ingredients blend together really well. Tender, tender meat with a perfectly balanced sauce. I would've liked the pasta a bit more al dente but still so very delicious. Someone from the party ordered the steak frites, and it was cooked perfectly. The peppercorn sauce was out of this world! The short rib pasta was on a special menu. For dessert, the bread pudding with ice cream! Very sweet of the restaurant to add a beautiful happy birthday message on the plate but the ice cream and bread pudding lacked some flavor - would've love some more coffee and toffee taste from the ice cream and the bread pudding needed some more moisture and cappuccino taste, maybe more sauce? An ambient restaurant with a fireplace going on a cold night, Gladstone Tavern is great for a date night or group dinner. The service was friendly and great with water being refilled immediately. Zucchini sticks and crab tots were great appetizers. The salmon was crusted thoroughly with spice. The falafel and hummus accompanying the salmon was good, not great. Just a stop-in after a nice walk, so hungry and thirsty. The flatbread pizza was undercooked and the buffalo chicken salad was just ok. Not really a wide variety of food and no appys but just a big eh for what we had. Service was ok, but you can see, as we sat outside, challenging to have service from inside. 3 1/2 stars! Nice place 2 parking lots (1 was closed so it was a little confusing to know where to park but found street parking no problem!). Interior is very nice, tables are spaced out & they have a lovely fireplace. The bar area tables are small for 4 or more people so we moved to the main dining room but I'd go back to enjoy a drink in the bar. I love the large ice cubes served for bourbon drinks! Service was pretty slow - a table that came in after us got drinks & their order taken - not cool. Drink orders took 15 minutes & the place was not full. Menu is small & eclectic - very unique offerings - wish there were more "normal" things like a chicken sandwich or clams, or even wings for example. Our group enjoyed our food - chopped salad, chips & salsa, shortbread flatbreads, caesar salad, focaccia bread, & brussel sprouts. The food that we did not care for: cheese plate on the special menu - pathetic - 3 different pieces of different types of brie-type cheese & the crab claws - we had to ask for a fish fork - they were miniscule - why bother even offering something like this. I would go back definitely but with the annoyance of a closed parking lot with no sign advising where to park, the service flaws, & some issues with the food, I cannot give this place a 5 at this time but it definitely has potential! read more

The Gladstone Tavern has been on a downhill slide for a few years now, but I think today might have been the last time I went there if things don't change. Nothing about this place is terrible, it's just that it doesn't live up to the standard of a relatively pricey restaurant in a very upscale neighborhood. First of all, the menu is one of the most uninspired ones I've seen. The same tired burger, pan seared fish and braised lamb shank they've had for years and that you can find in any restaurant, often in better versions. So today, I decided to order one of tonight's specials , the Parmesan crusted swordfish. Let's start with the positive: The fish seemed fresh. The rest was kind of a disaster. What I got for $32 was two rather small breaded pieces of fish a few capers, some beans and a sauce that we need to discuss more in detail. I should have taken a picture, but the whole thing looked about as uplifting as a tax form. Now for the sauce. It was supposed to be a lemon sauce, and boy was it a lemon sauce! It was so acidic that it drowned anything else. Any chef with some kind of training would know that you don't pair the delicate taste of fish with such an overwhelming sauce. It's a rookie mistake. The rest of my family had some pretty uninspiring burgers, salad and pad Thai. This is a far cry from the gem the Tavern used to be a few years ago. A think the only way to save this place is to employ a new chef. This just isn't working. read more

There were limited vegetarian options including pad thai. It was not as flavorful as one might find in an authentic Thai restaurant. But it was acceptable. The bar served us good cocktails. Went to visit the alpaca farm and stopped by for some brunch. The food was Good. The chilaquiles were a little sweet for what the dish should be. The chicken and Waffles came with no syrup and it took us about 15 mins to get the server to bring it. The French toast was cooked to perfection and the omelette was nothing more then crap and spinach. Had it been topped with the crab it might have been better. I was dining alone, so I asked to be seated at the bar. It's 92 degrees, and I was hoping for an ice tea and some dinner. For about five minutes, no one looked up to ask me if I wanted anything to drink. A regular walked in out of his Cybertruck and immediately got drink service. Arrived and host was seating us on deck when manager (the one with a mustache) stepped in front of us and put a 'reserved' sign on table - then rudely said that we couldn't sit there. He and host disappeared. We waited in line to be seated again - when we got to front same manager got on phone and made us wait for 10 mins while he completed a call. He gave me a rude response when asked if we could be seated. Would not recommend and never going back. read more

Had an excellent family lunch here. Awesome outside seating, great menu items, and a drink menu with many options that sounded good. Overall, pretty upscale food for a reasonable price. The only complaint is that the kids menu is extremely overpriced - makes bringing a family of 5 pretty difficult outside of a couple times a year. Otherwise, would be in regular rotation. Will definitely return on occasion though, and hopefully for a date night soon! read more
