Run of the mill sushi joint along Commercial. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is cozy but really small. As of the time of writing, there are only 2-3 tables, with maybe 12 seats total. Staff are friendly. Sushi combos are decently priced, though the pieces are definitely on the small side. I added 2 BC rolls ($4) to my combo and these are worth the money. Stuffed nice and full with fish skins. I think there was more fish skin than rice. Special mention. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point, though there are plenty of other options along this stretch.

Don't over look this tiny small Japanese restaurant. It is actually really good. My mom got the bento box A ($10) and I got the sushi box ($13). I was amazed at the price and the portion size. The food was really tasty too. The bento box A and the sushi box are pretty much the same with one slight difference. The sushi box has 3 pieces of nigiri sushi on top of the bento box A. So the box itself comes with: miso soup 2 piece spring roll Chicken on rice tempura salad and a slice of orange. So much food left that we had to take it to go. I highly recommend giving this place a try. They have pretty good tea as well.

We've been frequenting Ginger Sushi (before the pandemic) because the hubby loves their chicken teriyaki donburi and he is a creature of habit (LOL). It is a small sushi place with around 6 tables inside and their close for an afternoon break from 3:30 to 4:30pm. We've tried the following items there in our previous visits: chicken teriyaki donburi, chicken karaage, spinach gomae, assorted tempura and several rolls. Their chicken teriyaki is consistently yummy while the different rolls we've tried are made well and filling. Their spinach gomae portion is a bit small compared to other sushi places though. Service can be quite spotty at times especially if the place is full. One time we had to ask for water 3x before we finally got em. Overall, the servers are nice and friendly. Prices are quite affordable too. They also have GF options so that's always a plus.

I've been here a few times for take out when I am in the neighborhood. Although it is a small shop, there is some room for seating here. Their prices are very reasonable and the sushi is top notch, well worth the price paid. I got the crunch roll this time around, and I would recommend ordering their rolls. Will be back for more.

I love Ginger Sushi's Veggie Tempura. I come to visit this place whenever I have time before or after an appointment nearby and they've never let me down. The Veggie Tempura doesn't make me feel sick because of the deep fry oil. Woohoo! I think it's the number of vegetables they give me. It's not too many that I start to feel sick. It is good to balance tempura with sushi. Customer service is fantastic. The venue is well-kept clean. The prices are super decent and the dishes are great! I will come back again!

I honestly love this place. This used to be my go to sushi place when I worked downtown, it always cheered me up from my sad/mad days. It was still a little bit out of my way to get there but it's worth it. ( I haven't been there in months, I miss it) Ambience: 5/5 Cute, cosy and authentic. Chopsticks on the wall with names of regulars, cute: plates, soy dishes, tea cups and pots. This place is really small but if there is a wait I would recommend trying it. Food: 5/5 My usual favourite are the avocado roll, Dragon, sakura and the toro sashimi. The plating is so pretty and tasty garnished with fruit and lovely things. Mouth feel of the ingredients are wonderful, flavours are better than other sushi places I've been to. Service: 5/5 When I went there often, you get to know everyone. They are nice, charming and tight-knit. The sushi chef is incredibly talented and has delivered one of the best toro sashimi I've ever tasted. There is so much love in this place. Worth: 5/5 The price is not overly much for what you are getting. This place gets really busy with the max of only 1-2 servers and chefs so you might be waiting a bit but quality takes time.

We'd tried to check out Ginger Sushi a few months ago but they were randomly closed. They're a Korean run Japanese sushi spot next door to Tandoori Palace. We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 7:30pm) and it was busy. There's only 6 tables inside so it's a tight squeeze. Service was friendly and our tea was refilled several times. The menu is massive; appetizers, salad & soup, tempura, sashimi, nigiri, noodles, teriyaki, donburi, rolls, combos, bento boxes and party trays. Some of their combo options are ridiculously cheap. $8.50 for 22 pieces is crazy. - Chopped scallop roll ($4.00) - a little too much rice but the scallop was good and worth the price. - Nigiri combo A ($11.00) - salmon, tuna, ebi, hokkigai, tamago, inari, avocado and scallop. Most of the nigiri was unmemorable. Again, too much rice and the slices of fish didn't even stick to the rice. The only enjoyable pieces were the tamago and scallop. - NIgiri combo B ($14.00) - aburi salmon belly, hamachi, saba, tai, BBQ unagi and spicy ebi. They really don't do aburi well here. The best piece was the spicy ebi. The rest were either not torched enough or torched too much. You're better off eating at Green Leaf Sushi for aburi. - Aburi hamachi oshi sushi ($11.00) - hamachi, garlic and ginger with soybean sauce. This may be one of the worst pressed sushi's I've had in my life. The hamachi was beyond dry; stumped how it could be this bad. The slices of garlic were also an odd topping choice. So terrible we didn't finish. Don't bother with any of GS's aburi or oshi options. 2.5 stars.

Dragon roll TONs of eel on top(a very large piece)

I was on vacation in Vancouver and over the weekend I came to this restaurant. We reserved a table for 6 as the place is not very big. We are glad that we found this sushi place. Everything was on point. Service from the wait staff was really good and the chef was especially friendly. The atmosphere is very welcoming. On the wall you will find chopsticks of the regulars which I think is a pretty nice honour and adds to the ambience of how customers are treated. On to the food. We ordered a variety of dishes to try a variety of things. Toro (whole belly) was fatty and tasty. Soft shell crab, the batter tasted crisp and fresh. Sashimi platter was delicious with a nice variety, especially the sweet shrimp which tasted amazing. The dragon roll, you get a very large and meaty piece of BBQ eel. This place was great value for what you get We wish we were in town longer as we would go back to try other items on the menu. When we asked for our bill , waitress informed us that the chef had prepared a Salmon nigari surprise for us, which was seared nicely and had a great taste. If in Vancouver again, I would definately go back. Great food and service.

Tobiki nigiri, spicy tuna roll, dynamite roll

Tobiki roll lying on its side with Tobiki falling off. Spicy tuna roll has Siracha sauce poured on top, which is, to me, a cheat. The worst is the soggy, dense dynamite roll, which is inexplicably doused in teriyaki sauce. Everything is dense, damp and bland. Mall sushi would be an upgrade.

Love how they insert strawberries in all the dishes I've ordered today. Had the Veggie Sunomono (very fresh, well balanced base and the cucumber was sliced to perfection, along with the diced avocado). Dragon roll was done well, unagi was cooked well and presentation is beautiful. Personally I find my dragon roll to be oversauced and the tempera is a bit greasy (oil temperature too low) and amount of rice is thin (which is great) but packed too tight like glue. The Charashi Don is non traditional, very poke bowl fusion like, rice is cooked and seasoned well and the flavours I had today was very complimentary. I would come back and order the sunomono and charashi don again and would love to try some other dishes. Staff was very friendly and super attentive.

Caterpillar roll.

Gotta love Ginger, my little sushi dive on the drive. No AC but who cares, I love the Sakura roll. Very nice and quaint. You can leave your personal sticks on their wall too.

Steep as it is, I decided I wanted a "quick little sushi lunch with a view", and a quick little sushi lunch with a few is exactly what I received. Although I don't recommend it, I walked right in from the street, no reservation, and was seated at the bar (in pretty casual street clothes I may add). I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

Michelin starred quality in their service by how they explained the menu, brought out the food, came back around to refill waters. Just top notch service and elegantly so. The food was good but not of value. Their lunch set was a good introductory to what they offer. I enjoyed the food for its flavours and presentation but I thought that it was a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, fresh and definitely elevated, but it was $50 for 10pcs of sushi, 2 appetizer sized samples of their appetizer or entree dishes, and miso soup (which we did not get and didn't realize till much later in the day). If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.

Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

It was so light and crispy and the chicken was tender and juicy. Saku's katsu was so good that when I think about the katsus I've had is the past at other places I realize now they were just decent katsu. Other highlights here are their house made sesame dressing - so good. They sliced the cabbage salad so thin that in combination with the sesame dressing it was a great combo. I usually don't like that much raw cabbage but I ate every bit of it. The ambience is airy and cool. The staff were really great and asked us about any allergies. Still comes with a little side of pickles, and unlimited rice, cabbage, and miso soup. No katsu sauce. The katsu was fried to perfection. Juicy, tender, cant complain. But since they serve it in a broth, it does get soggy really quick. Still good, but after a few minutes its just soggy. The broth is nice with rice; comforting kind of meal. The unlimited rice/soup/cabbage is just icing on the cake. My dining partner had the Kake udon (pretty good, noodles good texture and slightly smaller strands than most places) and Menchi Cheese side - basically a pork meatball with cheese and deep fried katsu-style, served with katsu sauce. This was excellent. My original review still stands. Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
