I "inherited" (AKA was dumped with) about the nastiest pool you could imagine as fallout from a 'business separation'. To say the pool was a swamp would have been offensive to swamps. I contacted three contractors - some on Yelp - and got three bids. The pump had been stolen, the sand filter was destroyed, the pool bottom was pure slime, the water in the pool was thicker than Grandma's Gravy --- and Grandma's Gravy was never Green. Jake not only gave the best quote - great value - but also has been extremely reliable in follow up weekly maintenance. Value, reliability, and he is super easy to get along with. When I have questions or need something - he is very accommodating, and easy to contact. He also has kept a keen eye on my equipment and notified me when something seemed off. While I have looked at the negative reviews - I must say that I simply have not shared their experience at all. He has 2 Yelp accounts and unfortunately I saw the one with 10 five-star reviews and discovered this one after the fact. I paid $20K for mediocre work, and underquoted materials. He brags about communicating but doesn't seem to understand the concept. He never came to check progress let alone the finished project. When his workers do half-assed work and you bring it to his attention he just gives excuses and not good ones. After further research (that I wish I did previously) I found out Jake is a fraud. Be very careful going with this pool company. While the owner talks a good line and makes a lot of promises, service is mediocre at best. He is disorganized and hires local kids who have never cleaned a pool before. The young fellow that showed up asked us where the pump was ( sitting in plain view). For the first two visits, he didn't even have the key to the gate so I guess if we weren't home, it wouldn't be cleaned. Said key was never located and returned after we stopped service. There are far better and more responsible companies out there This is a response to the owner's comments below. i definitely guarantee we were clients. You came to our home, gave us an estimate that we felt was reasonable. we paid via VISA for a month in advance as requested. then, as I stated, the mediocre weekly service began. i felt bad for the young man that came out. He knew nothing. Contracted to replace a backwash valve. The first person sent installed it incorrectly, like a sand filter instead of a DE filter, blowing the DE into the pool and making the filter useless for days. They didn't come back and fix it immediately, they put me on the schedule days later. The second person they sent tried to reuse the valve and made a ridiculous mess of the piping (too many turns, ugly spray paint), the backwash hose no longer fit, and the work leaked. Contacted the owner. The owner accused me of trying to get free work, threatened to send me to collections if I didn't pay immediately, and refused further contact. I tried taking the company to small claims court, but the address for their LLC is vacant so I couldn't serve them. Edit: Jake has responded to this review asking why I didn't give him a chance to rectify. I did after the job was botched the first time. After the second time when the job was still not satisfactory, he tried to charge me to fix the paint. I did not trust that this person he sent could complete the work in a satisfactory manner. I have added the last message Jake sent to me which refused further communication. Additionally, because my filter was useless for several days because of the initial incorrect installation, the pool had to be drained and cleaned and the work that Gilbert Poolman did had to be fixed. It cost me at least twice what I paid for this job to fix what they did. Jake, you had your chance to do this right the first time AND the second time, but you treated me like a scammer, refused to communicate, and now you insult me by saying I'm seeking attention. The reason for my rating was based strictly on the cost! I was trying to help my wife get ready for our grandsons pool part the next day and had to call someone for help with the pool pump. Usually, I would have done it myself but was busy with my wife getting last minute things done. I called Jake and he was able to get one of his technicians over late in the afternoon so it would be good to go the next day! I was grateful for that, but when the technician told me that it was just a clogged propeller he just took 3 screws off and opened it up removed the debris and screwed it back together it was working great took him 20 minutes to complete the job. I was very happy but then I was charged $150 for a 20 minute job, I will find the time in the future to fix it myself that charge was ludacris, I was grateful for the help because of the party but never in a million years thought I would be charged that much. read more

Updated to add it took him two years to respond to my review. I had my entire pool and spa completely rebuilt which included all the electrical stuff, motor, filter etc. it was several months after I let him go because of the issue in my review. When they took apart the filter it was like MUD. They said it looked like it had not been cleaned or serviced in years. To accuse your unhappy clients of being mentally ill because they are unhappy with your service is unprofessional. You can disagree but to say that repeatedly about your clients who have posted negative reviews shows no moral compass. It is slander to even say that as a professional. Horrible company!!! Do not use them because the owner does not do the work. He sends out a teenager to do it. If you complain, he will bully you and threaten you and accuse you of damaging the equipment yourself. True story! I have all the text messages to prove it. He is very passive aggressive, so now I have to file a complaint with the ROC. Worst service ever. 1. I had a new pump installed, and the person who installed it could not have been more than 20 years old. Jake never over saw the work or checked it when it was done. My pool filter was left in backwash mode with the pump was programmed to run so that my yard ended up being flooded. 2. Jake came to collect the money for the job and never once looked at the work to see the mess that was left behind, such as, pieces of pipe, garbage, and even the owners manual laying on the ground. 3. The pump was not programmed properly and was only running for a few hours a day, causing my pool to turn green the first time it rained. 4. When I complained, he sent his worker back... The same one who doesn't know how to program the pump correctly. Once again, he left with the pump programmed to run and the filter in backwash mode so I came home to a flooded yard! 5. When I texted Jake to complain, he told me to never contact him again or he would get a restraining order and then accused me of being on drugs!! I am a school teacher. I am not on drugs, and I am actually a very reasonable person until somebody rips me off thousands of dollars and doesn't do the job I paid them for. Jake is a bully and his employees are not well trained. His company should be called Gilbert couch potatoman because he doesn't actually do any work. With regards to the comment below by the company: I have the receipts to prove what work was performed and when you were here and what you charged me. Who cares if I waited to post the review? Does that somehow invalidate my experience and your shoddy work? I am not aware of any Yelp policy stating reviews are only valid if posted on the day the service was received. This goes to show you what to expect from these folks. STOP! Call someone else now. They don't know what they are doing and YOU will pay for their lack of experience. Our pool motor was on it way out. It was leaking, there was severe calcium build up, it was a few years old. I think it had some other issues too. I believe it was also squealing a bit and constantly. I let my wife know that I wanted it replaced. She called for the repair man. The repair man shows up (I believe he was the owner). Says it didn't need replacement and instead installed an impeller and a diffuser ($80 each !!!) and a $15 seal. Add in the $85 service call fee and the total amount of this repair was $260. This work was performed in the morning (this is during the height of summer). I came home from work that evening and could hear the motor squealing as I was pulling into the driveway. It was that loud. My wife calls the company back the following morning. So what does the repair man do this time? He follows my original request to replace the motor and installs a new motor and seal. $310 in parts, gives us a break on labor for $40 (gee thanks buddy) for a total of $350 to do WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE DONE THE FIRST TIME. The grand total for both visits $610. I just loved flushing $260 down the drain so this repair man could practice his scam sales skills or just enjoy experimenting on my dime. Worst company I've ever come across. Don't waste your time. I bought a new home with a pool and hired them to perform weekly service. The last service our landscaper accidentally blew some leaves in the pool. Because of this I was going to pay the guy more. When I saw him pull up and proceeded to come out to talk to him . But didn't see him any where so I went out to his car and he sped off when he saw me. Later he sends me a text saying he won't be servicing my property anymore. sends me a bill a week later and then I receive another text TWO days later threatening to put a lien on my property for non payment. Beware when hiring this pool company. I fired my last pool company due to the technician not closing the locking gate after service, several services in a row. I have a young daughter that is very mobile and very into things so that was a serious concern for me. When Jake the owner came out I expressed to him the seriousness of this issue and that was the reason I fired my last company. He assured me that would not happen with his company. Within a matter of a few services, the gate was left open. After calling to Jake and explaining to him what happened he again assured me it would not happen again. What do you know, a few services later the gate was left open again. Jake told me next time it happened I would receive one free month of service and once again assured me it would not happen again. Well this morning it happened again for the third time. Actually I suspect it to be the seventh time but the last three times I could not prove whether it was the pool company or my Landscaper as they both come on the same day. This morning I went out and checked the gate shortly after the pool guy left and it was left open. I called Jake and expressed my concern. I was extremely angry that this had happened! Once again Jake assured me it would not happen again and after asking him about the free month of service that he had offered he agreed to it. I had to bring it up though. Also this month I was double billed. I asked him to look into that and he said he would have it resolved by the end of the day. A couple hours later I got a call from their billing department and the lady on the phone told me that it was some sort of new billing procedure and they bill a month behind so my February payment was for January, the only problem was I was billed twice in February rather than once in February for January service then again in March for February service. I explained to her that I had a free month of service coming to me from Jake for the gate issue and that I would like one of the charges refunded. She said that's fine but we're just going to bill you again March 1 for February services. I told her no I had a free month of service coming to me that she could ask Jake about it. Frustrated I told her, you know what I only want to deal with Jake I don't want to deal with anybody else from this company. She then accused me of not wanting to talk to her because she was a woman. Basically calling me a sexist. I didn't want to talk to her because I would rather resolve my issues with the owner of the company whom I had already spoken with and who had an understanding of the issues that were going on with my pool. It had nothing to do with her sex. I was highly, highly offended. In response to your reply... Jake.......are my wife and I disgruntled clients, yes! Absolutely! As for our gate that requires "special" locking instructions... I guess if, push the gate until the lock closes are "special" instructions then you're correct our gate does require "special" instructions. You claim to have been "attentive to our needs to the best of your ability".... but what exactly have you done? I gave you three opportunities to fix this problem. I actually believe it to be six times that the gate was left open however our landscaper comes on the same day as your pool technician so I can't prove who left the gate open. But on three occasions I know that it was your technician. As for the free month of pool service you claim to have given us. We haven't received that yet. You offered that after the pool gate was left open the second time and when I called to complain about the third time the pool gate was left open I then had to remind you of that month of service that you offered me. When I called back to cancel after being accused of being a sexist by another employee of yours you then offered me the free month the pool service, which I excepted, I will just have to make sure as soon as your technician leaves, I go close the gate that I'm sure will be left open again. as for you saying we would rather come on here and tell the public that you could've been responsible for the death of a child rather than just fixing the fence is ridiculous! All we did was go on your Facebook page and your yelp page and let people know our experiences with your company so they were informed before doing business with you. This pool company is a joke... first they quoted me for some repairs and dropped the price by over $600 after I asked some questions. First off, why did they feel the need to try and rip me off? Had I agreed to their initial price they would have gladly ripped me off. Secondly, the repairs they did do took over a week to get right. A simple motor and filter replacement should not take 8 hours and 4 trips to get right. Stay away from these people unless you like being ripped off! read more

Encounter #1: Talked to the owner. He quoted me a price. We set up a time for the guy to come by. 5 stars. Encounter #2: Guy comes by and quotes me a price $25/month higher than what I was told over the phone. Not sure why. He's not the guy I talked to on the phone, so I just agree to it and call the owner. 1 star. Encounter #3: Call the owner to discuss price discrepancy. Somehow everything I "heard" (read: was told) on the first call is now different. We agree to a "middle" charge but I already paid extra for the first month. 2 stars. Encounter #4: No one shows up for first day of service (the following Friday.) The initial service - a "free" one - was on a Saturday so he "missed" it. He tells me he will come out on Saturday to deal with it. (This is the owner again.) Owner shows up very late on Saturday, shakes my hand, does the pool, and leaves without saying goodbye - even though we were both in the open garage. Eh, 3 stars. Encounter #5: Pool serviced as usual - all fine. I did find a dead lizard in the pool but I suppose that could have happened after they left. 4-5 stars. Encounter #6: I text the owner. "Can you change my pool cleaner timer on your next visit?" "Sure, no problem." Encounter #7: Pool is serviced. All appears fine. 4-5 stars. Encounter #8 (day after encounter #7): I text, "Were you able to change my pool timer?" "No, I wasn't. I have a new tech going to your house and I forgot to tell her. I'll be out tomorrow to fix it." - 100 stars. Now, what I haven't mentioned to this point is I have FOUR dogs. And they use a dog door. One of these dogs is a maniacal runner and I have asked him on at least 15 occasions to make sure not to let her out. Ever. He assures me he keeps dog bones in the car and he will service the pool HIMSELF and that the dog will NEVER get out. Why am I upset by Encounter #8 aside from the fact the timer didn't get changed? I now have a NEW pool tech and he FORGOT to tell her something. Something like... don't let the Chihuahua out, perhaps?! Encounter #9: I get a text from him stating that he has been by, can't change the timer, and that his OTHER tech will have to do it at some point. He also mentions my dog "tried" to bite him. ... I have a pit mix. Buddy, if she tried to bit you - she would have bitten you. And she has never tried to bite a HUMAN in her life, so I find it hard to believe she went after you. You must have the soul of the devil for her to have picked up on it and tried to bite you. Seriously. Anyway, the end of this story is that I got one "free" service, overpaid for less than one month of service, and fired them. WIthin 4 weeks that is a whole lot of negotiating, talking out the side of your mouth, and tech changes. Too much forgetting and complete lack of interest in my staying on service. Wouldn't recommend them unless you enjoy being a "number" and forgotten routinely. read more

I highly recommend this pool service company. We have used Gilbert Poolman over the last several years for vacation service, repairs and, (just this week) for tile cleaning. This company has been exceptional and wonderful to work with. Austin is awesome! He used a new product to clean calcium deposits from the tile, making it almost as clean as new. My experience is that they always have done a good job as well as have been courteous and friendly. Work is executed in professional manner and any issues are dealt with promptly. Just a message to let you know that Don came out right on time to look at my heater problem, was very nice, flipped a heater lever and that was the only problem (dummy me :). He educated me on how to move the levers when I want the heater on and off. He didn't charge me anything for the 2 minutes he was there which most companies will. This guy Jake is smooth talking, but sneaky; I'm gullible when it comes to contractors and I feel he definitely used that to his advantage. When he wrote an estimate for pool steps repair in my house in Gilbert, I failed to notice that he did not specify the amount of time my simple pool repair would take; his company did not show up when they said they would, and he blamed the continued lateness on miscommunication between himself and his workers, but why did it take two weeks to repair two pool steps? Sooooo when it came time to pay, I thought I'm gonna take 2 weeks to pay this jackass and he threatens to put a lien on my house.... for a $500 job, which I was NOT satisfied with. Do NOT use this guy, he's a piece of work and cannot be trusted. Update: the amount of time it took Jake and his crew to fix my steps ended up costing me more money in the long run. Lack of water in the pool (for step repair) dried out the pebbletec and it started to flake off and loosen, which ended up costing me thousands to repair...... read more

Used Gilbert poolman for a few months to do weekly service. Jake came out to the house prior to first weekly service and we talked about all the things the company does on a weekly basis. He insured the pool will be perfect week to week, that the techs take photos of pool before and after service, they talk about each pool during monday staff meetings and that I wouldn't have to worry about my dog as each tech carries dog treats. I asked Jake if he could just make a note to let the tech know about my dog as he has a large bark but is very nice, he insured he would. While Jake was out I pointed out a small drip coming from our waterfall, he didn't really inspect it and said the repair would be $1600 as they would need to chip out all the tile, fix the leak and re-tile. I decided to deal with the leak instead of spending $1600. Weekly service started and I wasn't home the first week but met the tech the second week. First thing he mentioned was that my dog scared him, I guess nobody made a note of the dog. I said Jake mentioned to me about the techs all carrying dog treats, he said he didn't have any. Continued service, had several diff techs but they did a pretty good job week to week (no pictures taken tho). I then decided to call again about the leak and see if someone else could take a better look. Called the office, they said they made a note and would have the tech call me to set the appt. three days went by, no call. Called every day the next four days got the same run around and eventually cancelled the appt as it was clear no one was coming. Called a diff company about the leak, they showed up the next day on time and fixed the leak for $10. Cancelled with Gilbert poolman that day and started weekly service with the new company. read more

When I first met Jake to discuss servicing my pool, he proudly told me he had never been fired for service issues. Ever. Well, I can say for a fact that is no longer true. The first few weeks of service were fine. I was delivered everything I was promised: emails the day before and day of prior to service, cards left by the service tech after completion, and most importantly a clean pool. I never received my first month's bill so I had to call and ask for it, but I just chalked that up to new service. After 4 or 5 weeks, I noticed that my pool was no longer clean after service. There was a bunch of white lint-like stuff floating at the top and even bugs and hair! For two weeks, I took photos immediately after my tech had left showing the debris and then emailed them to the company. I received a call back and was told a supervisor would be sent out. Later that day, I received an automated email stating that a supervisor call had been scheduled for 11am the next day. No one showed at 11am so I waited... then around noon I finally called the company. I was told there was a known issue with their auto emails and that I didn't really have an appointment at that time? No one told me! Arlene told me a supervisor would be out in the next hour or two or three. Gee, thanks for wasting my day!! When the supervisor arrived (Brian, I think), he just blamed it on the trees. He was very nice but I didn't really feel like he had a plan to do much about it. He did promise to talk to the tech and have him skim more thoroughly. The next couple of weeks there was less debris but I still didn't feel like my pool was as clean as it should be. A couple of weeks later, no one showed up on Thursday to clean my pool. Since I also did not receive an auto email stating someone would be there on Friday, I called the office. Arlene put me on hold for quite a long while and finally told me that my normal tech was out sick and "oops" no one else had been scheduled to clean my pool. So basically, they forgot. She sent someone out for service that day, Friday afternoon, and promised next week I would be back on the schedule. Next week came and with no show/no email by Thursday afternoon I called the office again. Once again I spoke to Arlene who put me on a long hold and came back to say someone would be servicing my pool on Friday. I told her I hadn't received an email about the service day and explained I had a dog that needed to be secured. She said she hadn't been told I "needed" an email. I told her that Jake had promised that as a part of basic service, I had always received an email in the past, and so yes - now you know! I also told her I was annoyed that this was the second week in a row I'd had to call about service. She then told me - "Well there's nothing in the account notes about any issue last week so I don't know who you spoke to about the problem." Um, YOU Arlene, I spoke to you! The third and final strike came the following week when a tech showed up Thursday morning with no email notice that morning or the prior day. I was in the shower and my dog started barking his head off. I had to run half naked in front of open shades to secure him in the house. Immediately, in my towel still wet, I called and cancelled my service with Gilbert Poolman. Arlene didn't even bother to argue, just promised to send my final invoice (which I haven't received). Never again! I have since hired a new pool service company and my pool is sparkling clean after service. Strangely, the same trees are still there but the white debris is no longer an issue. Not professional. Find people that know what they are doing! Called to get service with them started since we purchased a house that they serviced! 2 weeks run around they still had no idea what I was calling for. I don't know How companies like this stay in business! read more

This business has gone downhill fast. I called for a heater fix, guy came out but couldn't diagnose or repair. Said he would come back on Saturday, never called and never showed. I feel all of the competent employees have left. read more

We would not recommend this company at all. Rob came out to give us an estimate, told us about repairs needed, which we felt was very overpriced. $170 to replace three pool lights in a drained pool when we are supplying the bulbs? We asked for an itemized quote to be emailed to us, Rob said he would send it that night, and he never did. Then we called him again the next day, spoke to Rob, scheduled for them to drain our pool and confirmed with them the same day, and they never showed up, called or emailed. Unprofessional and as business owners ourselves, we would never conduct ourselves this way and expect to be successful or referred. Then we called Rob again the next morning, and he didn't answer or have the professional courtesy to explain why they stood us up on the pool drain. You try to give business to the local little guy, and then this happens. Disappointing to say the least. I would not recommend Gilbert Poolman at all. read more
