Spotted a red van parked near the Lake Merritt Farmer's Market. Inside was a friendly and eager pair excited to share their espresso. It was their second day open! "We're not third wave," they claimed. "We're going for a more old school Italian flavor" (paraphrased). Their espresso was respectable. I bought a single espresso for 2$ (who else sells single shots?). There was enough liquid there for a double (definitely not getting Ristretto's here), but I didn't catch any noticeable flaws. Even and low key like they said. No pretense involved. They don't have an official address and didn't disclose their bean source or roaster. They mentioned that they serve espresso shakes. Sounds good. There was no gelato in the van, but I requested affogato's. We'll see if they come through on that one. But they assured me that it's all local. When I worked in San Francisco I used to get a coffee every day that they are at the Alameda ferry (Tuesday-Thursday). I always looked forward to the commute with my cup of joe. We had parent/kid run booths for a carnival and after researching- I saw reviews for "best mobile coffee truck". Yes, their truck is cute and I thought the parents would appreciate good coffee and the kids hot chocolate on a chilly morning. I'm a bit of a coffee snob (I don't judge-I'm just picky :). Phenomenal coffee! This van comes outside our office once a week, and myself and several co-workers never miss it. The quality is excellent, and the baristas (Owners Jeff & Zeva) put so much love into making their drinks. Our favorites are the hot chocolate (big yummy marshmallows!) and all their espresso drinks. *so smooth and creamy!* We find ourselves sitting on the edge of our seats on Wednesday mornings, waiting for their email to say they've arrived. What a great concept! They have a van that is 100% self-contained (that means it supplies its own power, refrigeration, freezer, clean water, and storage of waste water). Inside they can whip up any coffee drink you can think of. Everything comes with a Soy option (which is a huge plus for me). Jeff & Zeva are amazingly friendly people. They have great customer service and their coffee rocks! So here's the challenge, Zeva asked me what I'd like... Since I'm a huge Starbucks Fan (there has never been a coffee drink that satisfies me more than a Caramel Macchiatos), I asked her to make me a Caramel Macchiato, without hesitation Jeff started brewing my drink while Zeva kept me company with a nice chat! The drink was ready in no time. Results: I'm impressed! Not only did it taste just like my favorite drink at Starbucks, its got a really fresh aroma to it and the foam on top... really put me over the top! I'm addicted to this Mobile Cafe!
