The German Diner is authentic food! Cozy dining room. Nice service from who I assume is the Owner. We started with a curry wurst. This was a grilled bratwurst with ketchup and curry spice with a warm bun on the side. Best I've had in a while. For my main I had the cream shmizel with spaetzel and mushroom gravy. Delicious The schnitzel was thin and crispy with a creamy garlic sauce. Amazing My friend had the meatloaf smothered in mushroom gravy and warm sauerkraut. He said it was the best he's ever had. I'm visiting Tacoma for the week, but I'll be back before I leave, for sure. read more

The outside and interior of this restaurant might look plain but the food here is outstanding! The sweet lady server brought our delicious sauerbraten and roladen plates. Saturdays are the days to get the roladen. Friday's and Saturdays are to get the sauerbraten, like a roast beef, 2thick style cut beef slices. They come with a choice of starch sides and cabbage. A casual and comfy mom-and-pop style diner serving generous portions of German food. We were seated immediately for lunch. The woman working at the restaurant was courteous and friendly. We ordered the Rahm Schnitzel Entree and Jager Schnitzel Entree with a side of Currywurst and sauerkraut to share. The food was prepared fresh to order and took a bit of time to get out but it was worth the wait! The star of the meal was the creamy Rahm schnitzel and sauerkraut side! Wife and I are new to the area and were craving some schnitzel. We heard about the German Diner and gave it a go... Friday at 1:30 pm. Ambiance - PNW exterior and a very humble and unpretentious interior. Honestly, seemed like every other German diner on a stateside airbase I've ever been to... so it made me feel right at home! Loved it! But it definitely isn't your first date night dinner destination to be clear...lol! Cafeteria-esque furniture... if you catch my drift. Service - I think we may have had the owner as our kellnerin, as we picked up on a German accent. She was so friendly and attentive and food was served promptly! Seemed liked the tables around us were all having similar experiences too! Everyone appeared to be enjoying their food, service, and dinning table convos! Food - My wife had the Rahmschnitzel with mash potatoes and I had the schnitzel with a garlic cream sauce and a side of spatzle. Both were excellent! The Rahmschnitzel was a slightly darker gravy than I'm used to and lacked any visible mushrooms. But I almost wondered if the mushrooms may have been puréed into the gravy cause the flavor was still there I thought. Regardless I ate all my wife's leftovers as it was so damn good! I loved my schnitzel too, but be forewarned... it's packed with garlic! So plan to be marked safe from vampires for the evening! LOL! The schnitzel was pork and chicken was an option too! I was born and raised on veal schnitzel, so I'm always bummed when it's not prepared that way... but veal seems to be harder and harder to find. I think in retrospect, the Rahmschnitzel would pair better with the spatzle and the creamy garlic gravy would have paired better with the mash potatoes. In the end, the food was so authentically good, we devoured it so fast that we forgot to take pics! They offer a military discount and we appreciated that! Beer and wine available. 2.5 that I'll round up to a 3. The food was good but it took too long to prepare the food. We arrived around 12:15 on a Tuesday. There were already 3 small parties finishing up their food and a party of two that had drinks but were waiting for their food. The ambiance is no frills but clean. I ordered the meatloaf with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were buttery and delicious. The meatloaf was on the drier side but the gravy was very tasty. I love meatloaf, so I specifically picked this restaurant to have it for lunch. Unfortunately, the food takes a really long time. We waited well over an hour for the food. For the two people who had salad as part of their lunch, there was a long wait between ordering and getting their salad, as well as over 30 mins for our lunches to come out after they got their salad. At one point I thought they had forgotten about us, but then the table of 2 next to us got their food and I realized it was just slow. I also saw two people pick up a to go order about 5 mins before we got our meal. It would have been nice if they gave us a heads up about how long you have to wait when we ordered. We left the restaurant at 2. There is a 3.5% charge to use your credit card, so bring cash. read more

I've had a hard time finding great food in Olympia ever since I moved, but maybe I've been looking at things the wrong way. Instead of expecting amazing Parisian grade pastries, Austin level barbecue, or San Francisco level Asian food, I should try the stuff that the settlers around here specialize in- Nordic/Euro type foods. We had a craving for some German food, which we never have, but we were watching a movie at the Regal and wanted dinner before, so we drove up to German Diner and wow. It was weird. We came in and there were people seated at the tables near the wall and they looked at us silently. Did we interrupt an AA meeting or something? I guess they were just waiting for the lady to take their orders because after awhile, things warmed up and those diners started acting normal. The restaurant is proud that their food is homemade and for once that is actually true, because I think the owners actually live above the restaurant. And the food is so good! I had the meatloaf with red cabbage and mushroom sauce and it was so freaking good. Sis had the Jagerschnitzel with noodles and that was even better. Even the side salad dressing was simple, but delicious. We had a piece of cake and that was great too. Both Sis and I have traveled around Germany and we were not impressed with the food, but this place in Lacey was better than anything we found on the continent. read more

The German Diner is one of my favorite go to options close to home on those days I'm just go tired to cook. One thing we do is pre-order via phone before we head over and then are on our way (we live 4 miles away). For dinners this works well as it gets busy and they are a small but hard working sweet team of amazing food prep. The schnitzel is so tender it cuts easily with a fork. I have never had a bad meal there in years. Sometimes we take out but prefer eating in so it's nice and hot. Oh but DO take a piece of cake for later (if you're full like me after a meal). The cakes are light, not overly sweet and the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) is my fave. Like dunkel bier? They have that too. read more

The inside of this restaurant is scary. I know, but the food is very good so don't let the dingy poorly lit dining room put you off. Surprisingly, or maybe not, the take out business was very active. I would recommend the schnitzel with mushrooms. Very tasty with the red cabbage or mashed potatoes. The dinner salad was an unusual mix of different veggies and flavors. Not sure I would have combined the flavors but for some reason it worked. The restroom was also not attractive. Hmmm, to fix some of the visual problems here would cost money, so I get it. As a side note, using a credit card adds to the bill. Again as a previous business owner I understand the costs associated with processing credit cards. I would also alter the fridge that had cake slices in it. I wanted to try the desserts but for some reason those three slices put me off. Wondered how fresh the cake would taste. Visual issues only. So yummy! It's not fancy, but don't judge a book by its cover. You can tell each dish is made with care (yes you must wait a bit) but that is the trade off for a warm hug of German goodness. The owner is genuine, kind, and clearly wants to share a slice of her culture with you so sit back, and have a chilled stein of a cold German beer and enjoy a taste of Deutschland. We walked in at 12:45, host didn't check us until 10 mins later. We accepted it as a busy lunch time. We ordered our drinks and just sausage brats. 20 mins later host is talking to customers and I had to get up and ask if our drinks can be refilled. There were only 4 customers left now. Our food is still not ready 1/2 later. Sad to say this was a very poor experience for us and we will not return again. I can't even rate the food bc it's still not ready.... For sausages??? Food finally came out. She put the food on the table but not without a comment about me giving a 1-star review. I was appalled. I guess it was the husband that heard the commotion and he too wanted to let me know what he thought about my post. Wow, never have I experienced an incident like that. We never went into this restaurant because from the outside it looks a little sketchy, my best friend thought it was run by German mafias and we were too scared to check it out. But we did one day and it's really the highlight of the food exploration for this year!! I recommend trying all their bratwursts, the currywurst is surprisingly good, I had no clue that Germans can do curry as good as they do! Rahm schnitzel is so delicious, I like the chicken one and my best friend likes the pork one more. Every single dish we ever ordered have been delicious and we have been back to this restaurant more than 4 times in the span of 2 months. The wait time is pretty long and also it's pretty greasy smelling so ladies, be prepared to go hair wash day and if you are on a time crunch, it's better to order ahead of time over the phone! We have found the schnitzels to be extremely good - you can choose from a variety of sauces or just enjoy the crispy goodness of a plain schnitzel with a little lemon. My favorite is the Jagerschnitzel - a brown gravy mushroom sauce. We like both the spaetzle and fried potatoes as sides, along with a salad. Servings are generous and we usually bring home leftovers. Service is friendly but sometimes a little slow because it is a small, family-run restaurant without a large staff and they do a lot of takeout orders. We have sampled the delicious pastries and really liked the Bee Sting cake! The dining room is simple and small, but large enough to accommodate several customers without a wait.
