Mo Ran Gak is a long-running Korean restaurant located in Garden Grove that's been operating for…read more25+ years. It serves traditional Korean fare such as soups, stews, noodle dishes, and Korean BBQ. It's not an AYCE BBQ spot but they serve high quality meat. The parking lot is small but there is also some street parking. We arrived at around noon and waited about 15 minutes for a party of two. We got the prime non marinated Korean BBQ for two people ($123.95). Of the meats we got as part of the combo, my favorites were the brisket, boneless short ribs, and marinated short ribs. The meal also came with banchan, steamed egg, and tofu soup. The steamed egg was decent but the tofu soup was actually really good. It was seasoned enough and was one of the better tofu soups I've had. Our server cooked the meat and cut them into smaller pieces for us so the meal was easy. I also noticed he cut the fat off them so I appreciated the small details. The service was also really fast and they were quick on giving more rice paper, banchan, and sauces. The meal was pricier than even some AYCE KBBQ restaurants but you can really tell the difference in the quality of the service, banchan, and meat. I saw a lot of Koreans eating here (especially older folks) so I know this is the spot to go to. Note that there is a 5% discount for paying with cash.

Finally got to try the popular Mo Ran Gak after hearing so much about it!…read more We ordered Combo B with beef and pork belly and added the cold noodles. Pro tip: when you order the cold noodles, they actually give you one large bowl of the flavor you choose and a smaller complimentary bowl of the other flavor, so you get to try both! I will say the meat quality was super good. Everything tasted delicious, and they cook all the meat for you, which is always a plus. My only comment is that the portions were a tad small for the price. Definitely more of a quality over quantity situation here, so don't come expecting your typical AYCE KBBQ portions. Service was great throughout the meal, and I loved that you can cap it off with a sweet soybean milk or coffee. Such a nice little touch to end the meal. Overall, really enjoyed the food and experience. Would recommend if you're looking for high-quality KBBQ and don't mind splurging a little!

We ordered the holdaak spicy chicken sandwich combo, which came with a side of fries and slaw, and the Seoul spicy chicken sandwich, which is supposed to be a yangyeom flavor (Korean sweet and spicy). Both chicken pieces were sizable and were not dry. The individual smothering of sauces also add some flavor and moisture. Fair warning that it's messy as the chicken, slaw, and sauce drip. Between the Holdaak spicy and the Seoul spicy, we preferred the Holdaak spicy.

However, the taste/flavors of the sauces and slaw were good, which is why I am writing this review for this specific location only. The girl at the cash register was also nice. The noodles had a great chewy, bouncy texture, and the flavor was packed with umami. I did find that both dishes tasted pretty similar, with flavors that were a little one-dimensional, but that definitely didn't mean they weren't delicious. Sometimes, simple flavors done well are all you need. Overall, the food tasted fresh and hearty, and the portions were huge. I couldn't finish my meal and had to take the rest home, but thankfully, the leftovers still tasted great. Always a plus when the food holds up well the next day. I wasn't the biggest fan of their kimchi, but I know everyone has different preferences, so this one just wasn't for me. The restaurant itself was quite spacious, and the service was attentive throughout our meal. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and would come back when I'm craving a satisfying bowl of cold noodles.

The banchan on the side was a little weaker compared to some other Korean spots I've been to, but the soups more than made up for it. Parking: They have their own parking lot, which made parking easy when we visited. You come here for Korean comfort food, metal dishes of banchan, enormous bowls of soup and stone pots hot enough to continue cooking your dinner while you eat it. And that stone pot is where I'd start. The gondre dolsot bibimbap was fantastic. Gondre is Korean thistle and here it gets worked through the rice with the egg, seaweed and everything else until the whole thing becomes earthy, savory and deeply satisfying. But the best part comes underneath. Leave it alone long enough and the rice against the stone develops that beautiful scorched crust, nurungji, which you eventually scrape loose and mix back through everything. That combination of the greens, sesame, egg and crispy rice is ridiculously good. There are dishes you finish because you're hungry and dishes where you keep digging around the bottom of the bowl because you're convinced there must be another good piece hiding somewhere. This was the latter. The galbitang was more complicated for me. The beef itself was excellent. Generous pieces, tender, falling easily from the bone and soft enough that our kids loved it. Plenty of green onion, too. My issue was the broth. I prefer galbitang on the restrained side so I can decide where it goes from there. Same reason I like seolleongtang arriving almost defiantly plain, give me the broth and let me dress it up myself with salt, saeujeot or whatever else I want. Han Yang has already made those decisions for you. The galbitang broth was noticeably sweet and salty and eventually it became a little much for me. That's preference as much as criticism, plenty of people will probably love it exactly as it arrives. I just wanted the volume turned down. The banchan was similarly mixed but mostly good. The napa kimchi was solid and nicely balanced. The kkakdugi was particularly good. The mustard greens, however, were ferociously sour. I like fermented food. These had me physically wincing. The dipping sauce for the galbi was excellent, though and I kept going back to it. Rice was average and a little dry. It did its job. Service was good and the whole experience was easy. The room itself has some age on it, tables are fairly close together and depending on where you're seated you may find yourself with a commanding view of the bathroom door. Nobody has ever requested the chef's table at the restroom, but here we are. Somehow I don't particularly mind any of it. Han Yang feels like a restaurant that knows what it is. It isn't polished into anonymity. People are here eating giant bowls of soup, mixing rice in scorching stone pots and getting on with their lives. And when a restaurant can put something as good as that gondre bibimbap in front of me, I can forgive a dry bowl of rice and a bathroom with excellent sightlines. Absolutely coming back. And next time, I'm getting that bibimbap again.

They treat you like they are doing you a massive favor just letting you sit down--as if they're paying you to eat here. Before spending a dime here, just take a minute to read the owner's responses to negative reviews. Every single one is hostile, defensive, argumentative, and threatening. Never a simple "we're sorry," just constant deflections claiming customers are making "false accusations." Just stop arguing with paying customers, drop the ego, and learn basic customer service. To make matters worse, their policy of refusing to let you take banchan to-go because it's "complimentary" is completely absurd. How is it complimentary? Will you feed anyone off the street just banchan? No. Complimentary means free. I am paying for the entire meal, and banchan is fundamentally built into the price and culture of dining at a Korean restaurant. It's part of what we pay for. Once it hits my table, it's paid for--and refusing to let a customer pack it up just means you'd rather throw perfectly good food in the trash out of spite or reuse it? If you honestly consider it a free handout you need to gatekeep, then don't bring the banchan out in the first place. Save your money, your patience, and your appetite. Go anywhere else.

The fat and juiciness was not like any other kbbq spot where you get tired of eating the meat. It was a plus that they had instructions of how to pair the meat with salt, cheese, or their other sides that they provided. The salt really enhanced the pork belly flavor and the cheese paired perfectly with the meat too. The soybean paste stew didn't really have much seafood in it that I noticed. Banchan of: Kimchee (very good, not too spicey, garlicky full of umami), bread & butter type pickle slices, cabbage & red pickled beet combo, mustard green(?), and pickled white radish/daikon. Interesting unexpected banchan. Staff sets up and cooks/cuts the meat for you. Much like Mo Rak Do up the street does. Combo C has a variety of pork pieces. Excited to try pork jowl for the first time. Ample portions. All fresh with the added bonus of aging sticker info for the pork belly. All the meats were VERY good. The belly had a nice distribution of fat to meat ratio. The jowl had high fat content with a slightly firmer bite to it. Great choice. We selected the pork & kimchee stew. Also very good. A side thinly sliced green onion salad also served. The dipping ingredients: course sea salt, wasabi, sweetened shoyu with garlic/green onion bits, & a samjang mixture. All very tasty. Course salt is a nice upgrade. Beautifully presented. Plenty of staff to attend to your table. Menu also has add'l meats to add for a larger group (table of 6 to our right). We also had to follow up on our edamame when it still hadn't arrived halfway through our meal, only to find out they were out of stock. We opted for the shishito peppers instead, but those were also unavailable, so we eventually settled for the cucumber with chili oil which I am not a big fan of because it almost tastes like pickles tossed in a very rich tasting chili oil dressing. When we were ready to check out, it was almost closing time, and all the servers were gathered in the kitchen.
