Seriously? Why did I just now stumble upon this gem? I actually heard about Geido for awhile but never had the chance to try them myself. Being an Asian and somewhat of a sushi snob, I don't easily buy into others raving about sushi. Well, I was surely wrong this time. My friend and I went on a Sat night around 7 and was told there was a 30 min wait. We got seated within 15 min! This would never happen in Manhattan. Then I take a look at the menu and couldn't believe how affordable the prices were. At first, my friend seemed a bit skeptical about the quality since the prices were way too modest. However, after our first bite of the uni, we were sold. We ended up trying so many items for the next 2.5 hrs. I will definitely be coming to Geido to satisfy my Japanese and sushi cravings! Goodbye over-priced Manhattan sushi! Items I tried: Vegetable tempura - simple, light, and crisp! Chawanmushi - highly recommend it! The seasoning was perfect and it was especially great on a cold, winter night Uni sashimi - comes on a cucumber roll. Super fresh and creamy. It disappears in your mouth. Sushi/sashimi deluxe - I substituted the California roll for a spicy tuna roll. The sashimi selection was great and everything tasted fresh! Udon - simple, basic, solid. First of all, I like to address that the people working there actually speak Japanese!!! It's not one of those Japanese restaurants run by Chinese people. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant, that means the food must be good. I could be wrong but who knows. Ordered the green seaweed, it's a cold appetizer, not too sweet and very refreshing to eat on a hot day. I really liked that dish. I also ordered the salmon skin roll which was tasty as well. There was a good amount of salmon skin in the roll. I can't complain about quantity. Sometimes that wins me over quality haha I love food too much, so the more food I get, the happier I am, the better the rating. read more

Since I moved to the neighborhood, I have eaten at Geido with friends, with family, and by myself. Geido hits the spot every time. Sometimes if you come at a busy time of night on Friday or Saturday, but most of the time you can get a table. I've found that the people who work there are also very friendly and helpful. All of the food has been great and in particular I am a fan of sashimi, the obama roll, and the special ramen. They have a big menu so part of the fun is trying out new things. The special ramen is very affordable and what I often get if I'm eating by myself. It is a chicken broth ramen. I enjoy the tempura banana and ice cream dessert. It's exactly what you'd expect, a fried banana with ice cream. read more

What a gem in the Park Slope's neighborhood!! Whenever we travel away and come back to the city, we go straight to Geido as it's always welcome with friendly staff and its phenomenal food. This sushi place has a hip vibe and great energy. It's the first place in New York I found that makes a special type of sushi -- box sushi (also known as hako sushi). They made it decently well (I have little data points to compare it against) but it was a nice change from the usual sushi fare. Prices are pretty good for the rolls but for the sashimi and sushi, they are just okay. The spicy tofu soup is pretty good too. read more

Authentic place with cool decor. Fish was fresh (I had the sushi combo and my bf had two of the signature rolls with crunch in them - forget which ones) and the ambiance was bustling and lively. Slight concern: people who were waiting in line were made to wait by the dark space outside the restaurant (I don't know what that area is called! The one between the real door and the door to the restaurant itself). We didn't mind of course but it was just a little awkward to be standing in the dark, elbow to elbow with strangers. At least put a little light or something though? Another concern was that service was pretty slow. I noticed that the servers were the ones taking care of the to go orders, so our server was mostly running back and forth and packing. Maybe there should be a designated server doing only packing to go? And this one guy kept glancing at our direction when we were waiting for someone to take our order but he never approached us. I understand, maybe he wasn't assigned to our section but still, a little "your server will be right with you" would have sufficed. I had some friends visiting on new years weekend and decided to take them out to my favorite sushi place in Brooklyn, unfortunately Taro Sushi (across the st) was Closed for new years so we went to Geido instead... Thankfully this place is pretty Dam good! It was really busy, not sure if this is always the norm or if the holiday had anything to do with that. From the other reviews it sounds like it's often crowded. The fish was really tasty and there were some creative rolls to choose from. Highlight of the meal for me was a blue crab miso soup, which didn't really have crab meat in it but rather an actual crab carcass. It was a special and I don't know that they always offer it but if they do and you like soups, ORDER IT! I liked the layout of the restaurant and decor, lots of graffiti type stuff is painted on the walls, the sushi bar is v shaped and gives you a great view if you're sitting there. I'd definitely recommend you go to taro over this place but that being said you won't be disappointed if you choose Geido.. read more

Went here for dinner on a Satuday night. It was little busy and we had 5 people in our party, so there was a wait. But the staff was very nice and polite about it. They told us a 20 min wait but we got seated in less than 10 min. The decor is rather fun. It's a wide open space with very bright lighting. The walls are covered with graffiti-like drawings and characters. Lots of cute Japanese anime pics and animals. Plus, patrons have added their own scribbles and scrawls. I ordered the sushi and sashimi platter, and added for a supplement charge the soup and salad. Not a big fan of having to pay for those, however, it's worth it if you're hungry. The dressing on the salad is really tasty - sort of a citrusy ginger, and the portion is pretty big. The soup is standard miso, but also good. The platter came with 4 pieces of rice and sashimi, a portion of sashimi sans rice, and tuna and cucumber sushi rolls. Yum! Everything was fresh and delicious. I especially loved how one of the fish pieces was mackerel, which I LOVE, but isn't usually included in platters. Prices are pretty reasonable and I left feeling full and satisfied. read more

There are stories everywhere, from the painted back wall, to the toys on the shelf, to every customer at the bar who has a story to tell about Osamu's peevish playfulness. Seriously over-rated. The food is just AT par... nothing over. Sure the grub is somewhat authentic --- but NOT the best. The okonomiyaki (aka Japanese noodle pancake) was okay... not the greatest. It's definitely filling... The sushi and sashimi are okay. Fresh? Sure, but don't expect melt-in-your-mouth amazement. I personally have had better at INAKA and, of course, BLUE RIBBON SUSHI. You'll have to shell out the cash for the latter... but there's not question of quality there. Everything tasted somewhat lukewarm --- not just temperature-wise. I am kinda baffled by the glowing reviews. I guess the graffiti art interior goes a long way. The food is not good. I tried both sushi and kitchen food. I had the 5-piece Omakase. Yellowtail was most disappointing. Each fish was sour af and did not taste fatty. I don't care how cheap it is if it tastes only barely edible. There was not a single pleasurable moment in my mouth during this whole meal actually. Scratch that, the tea was ok. Next is the broiled salmon collar. Meaty, salty, overcooked. I was not a fan so only took a few bites. I eventually packed this up to go. I went to a bar after and caught a whiff of the nastiest scent. It was so rank and sour. I quickly located the source of the smell, which was the to go bag containing this salmon collar. I found a trash and dumped it. Last thing, I also ordered a donburi. Bland, dry. It came with a chili shaker, which didn't help the dish become more palatable by a big enough margin. Ugh yelp, why do you lie? read more

If you are looking for authentic, fresh and delicious Japanese food, Geido is the place to go to in Brooklyn. It is one of my favorite spots whenever I get a craving for Japanese food. The waitstaff are always friendly and welcoming and the ambiance brings back fond memories of Japan. It was my first time back at Geido since Covid in 2019 and it was heartwarming that the host still recognized me. It felt like coming home. I never leave a bad review but just received my food. The kitchen foods--tempura, katsu and rice -- were all room temperature (some cold). Best Japanese in the neighborhood! The only reason I would think of giving Geido less than 5 stars would be to keep it a secret from the rest of the city. The sushi is fresh and consistently good, they have a selection of classic sashimi and rolls as well as special rolls like the Mexican Roll and Obama Roll (recommend both!). Additionally, Geido's hot dishes such as noodles and rice dishes are fantastic. They also have a good drinks menu, love the house cold sake at only $5 a glass. Geido is not only one of the best sushi restaurants in Brooklyn, but also one of the first ones to open in Brooklyn. Pretty decent Sushi for a decent price. My best friend lives in the neighborhood, so we come here whenever we want to get a lot of rolls and not spend a lot of money. The Omakase for $25 can not be beat and the owner/chef Osamu Koyama will serve you some very inventive pieces of sushi. I hear that he'll let you add to his wall of graffiti if you are a regular. I recommend trying the Fried Oyster Appetizer, Seaweed Salad, Sumo Maki (tuna, salmon, fish roe, avocado, egg, asparagus, cucumber), and the Dynamite Roll (tuna, eel, avocado, ginger flakes, crab). Came here on a date a little while ago. While the date was...OK, Geido was....amazing! Fantastically fresh fish (we split the sashimi and sushi platters), piping hot sake, and friendly yet efficient wait staff made for a great experience. I was pleasantly surprised but the sashimi selection, definitely some things I hadn't seen on a typical sashimi platter (and no, I don't recall what they were, I was trying to be polite and focus on my date, hello!). The roll selection and overall menu definitely inspired me to come back, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. One day I will. And it will be gluttonously fantastic. A neighborhood restaurant that does not warrant an out of the way trip. The restaurant is small and crowded. There isn't a proper waiting area. There's a small hallway but if you have to wait there, you'll probably be in someone's way at one point or another. The staff is friendly, but it doesn't make up for the food. We shared the miso cod and it tasted like it was microwaved before service - very dry and flavorless. I had the chirashi and the rice came cold and the fish was very basic and bland. This cozy, friendly joint is everything you'd expect from a neighborhood institution. Very warm ambiance and servers. Delicious, and fresh food. Loved the specials of the day (especially the octopus). It gets really busy and is only open for dinner. We live across the street so were able to put our names down and then come back in a half hour to be seated. A ton of families and kids, so there was no need to feel self conscious with our 10 month old in his high chair. Yeah, this place is my jamm! It's totally cramped and often has a wait but it's worth it. The price point cannot be beat and it's on Flatbush which is a sort of a shocker. I moved to the UES recently and go back to visit my friends and Geido. I even had my going away dinner there. The staff is informal and don't like to take ANYTHING back to the kitchen but you should have to send much back. The sushi menu is well thought out with interesting combinations abound. You won't find king crab sushi on the menu or fancy Nobu type fish but you will enjoy every bite. The crowd is very BK eclectic. It's pretty bright in the spot which would explain why a dude walked in doing a straight Corey Hart wearing his sunglasses at night. Warning - ladies, don't go to heavy on the rouge if you're on date, the joint is lit up like the 4th and you will look like Penny Wise. I've never had a bad experience coming to this long standing go-to Sushi joint that's been around in this neighborhood for quite some time. So I thought it high time to rave about Geido's consistent goodness after my "work husband" & I went for dinner tonight. We had a quality, low-key, yet totally fulfilling Tuesday night dinner. My chirashi was so fresh, flavorful, yet simple, just as it should be! The crisp & succulent array of fish pieces was accented by the absolutely deliciously seasoned seaweed & the seasoned crab purée garnish in the bowl added a delightful dimension. The portion was large enough to call filling, but not overwhelming. Every single aspect was quality without falling into an upscale kind of category. I had a basic house cold sake with dinner which was unremarkable but it the spot just fine. I knew his black cod dish was going to be a simple smallish piece of fish that would taste like heaven & it totally hit the mark. He ordered the spinach with sesame seasoning/sauce from the vegetable section of the menu. (I liked that the vegetable section is basically an array of both classic & inventive vegetable side dishes that you can order a la carte to compliment say a lone piece of fish, as he chose). The spinach dish was actually very filling! I was surprised at the spinach side dish being somewhat heavy, although simple in recipe and quite tasty! We stumbled upon Geido as we were walking through the 'hood. It was packed at 10pm on a Friday, so we knew it had to be a good place. The food was tasty. I was especially pumped to see Vegetable Croquettes on the menu! The last time I had them was in in Japan. They were delicious. Highly recommend. We also accidentally ordered the Fried Banana & Green Tea desert....wow, it rocked. Get it if you're feeling curious or decadent. I loved the atmosphere. Good.Basic.Gentrified. I loooove Japanese food. I experience a lot of it and I usually judge the place before I even taste the food. This one didn't include one asian person sitting at any table. That's usually not a great sign of authenticity. As I expected, the food was good. But pretty basic and quite americanized. I had read too much about it and was expecting something really special. The sushis were not cool enough for me. A bit warm which gave it a mushy texture. The fried ice cream was bad. The rum on top makes it soggy and messes with the taste of the ice cream. The fried banana however is the bomb and surprisingly might be the best item on the menu... I like the atmosphere there. It really feels like a chill neighborhood spot and I love writing on walls. Food was delicious! I scarfed down my katsu curry with chicken within 15 minutes, and my tempura ice cream, as well! Prices are very fair. The decor is really cool, and the staff are really sweet. I popped by the Starbucks across the street to study, and their bathroom broke down, so I came back with shame to Geido, and they let me use the bathroom. Next time I come here, I want to try the sushi. The curry is one of the better Japanese curry's I've had in NYC! It's even better than Curry-ya. I highly recommend Geido for delicious Japanese food. If you're into sushi rolls, they have some pretty goods ones too. We typically order sashimi/sushi and the other more traditional dishes. I love their broiled Nasu (eggplant) and Chawanmushi dish which is the best I've tasted in a long time! My husband and I sat in front of Chef Osamu twice and I can say that we've walked out a little buzzed from all the sake he was 'recommending'. We love sitting at the sushi bar and see the Chef work his magic. Before you order from the menu, make sure you take a look at the specials on both walls. Chef Osamu is a little quiet at first but once you get to know him, you know why this is his establishment and why everyone loves him! I still can't believe I've been living here for 5 years and only heard about this place last year. They have been around for 30 years!! I love the wall graffiti and the lively atmosphere. Hands down the best Japanese place for the price in all of BK and NY. I've been going to Geido for 7 years now. The place is run by Japanese, approved by Japanese patrons, and they never waver in quality. Despite never having hamachi kama, eveything they do have is awesome. Friends come from Queens and Manhattan to have the home-style dishes of Geido. The sushi fish is fresh. ALWAYS. The Okonomiyaki is perfect in texture. The spicy tofu soup is the best appetizer.
