Came here because of a friend's recommendation and it's very close to Barclays center! (A good place to have dinner before the game) Location: Very close to subway station & close to Barclays center. Wait time: We arrived at 5:30pm when the restaurant just opened. And the place is full of people before 6pm. Wait can take longer if you come on weekends after 6pm. Food & price: The food we ordered was great! We got the zasui soup, shrimp & vegetable tempura, oyako special(it was written on the board, didn't notice if that's a menu item or daily special), edamame & hot sake(sho chiku bai), my friend ordered some kind of nabe(pot). Zasui soup tastes really good and there were rice at the bottom, very comfortable to have such soup on a freezing night. The tempura was good but I wish they'd have more leafy vegetables in the tempura. Other food were good as they are normally but not really impressed. Been living in the area for over a year now, can't believe it's taken me this long to finally eat here. This is THE Japanese place to go to in the area- whether you're looking for sushi or more izakaya style food. The fish is fresh, there's much more variety on the menu (compared to similar spots like Taro or Yamato), the service is excellent, the ambience is much more izakaya-like (much more low-key/unpretentious compared to Taro or Yamato), and the prices are so affordable. Only downside is that this place is ALWAYS packed. Expect to wait (and grab a drink down the street at Sharlene's) if you come during prime eating hours. Oh and Geido is CLOSED on Mondays. read more

I highly recommend Geido for some delicious Japanese food! Try to sit at the sushi bar if you can, you'll have some great views. The menu is huge and very interesting and unique. They have all the classics but also some more unusual items - for instance, in addition to all the regular tempuras they also had fish cake tempura! I want to go back to try some of these items. Go early because they run out of items sometimes, like the night we went they did not have anymore toro by 9:00 pm. Cheap and delicious large hot sake for $8 started off the night right. Next we had a tofu appetizer special served with vegetables, fish flakes and ponzu sauce. The chirashi entree was delicious and the fish was all excellent and very fresh. Very local spot for decent Japanese food. This place is flooded with locals which shows it's pretty authentic. I've tried two appetizers from the sushi bar which was good. The chawanmushi was some of the best I had. It was savory and soft. The only thing was that the shrimp was overcooked in it. Wow... I came here on an whim not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. This little place actually ended up being the BEST sushi I've ever had in Brooklyn. Service was fast and friendly. Sadly we came at the end of the night and had to rush our order, however that didn't affect the quality of the food at all! Everything was top notch. The best roll was the mackerel roll! It was all so fresh you would think that the ocean is literally in their backyard. It was delicious. My friend and I had to fight over the final few rolls. Their menu is actually very diverse and it's far from the typical sushi restaurant menu. What really sets this place apart is the quality, care and effort that goes into their sushi! The salmon rolls and the spicy tuna rolls actually have flavor it's not some bland generic fish filling that most places serve. TGIF dinner treat from the bf. Since he's been craving sushi for awhile now and wasn't extinguished by cheap half price sushi joints, I met the bf here after work. They open up at 5:30, so we decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood since it was a nice day out. Coming back around the corner, we saw that there was a line already formulating at the door, so that brought our hopes up. We asked to be seated at the bar to watch the itamae slice and roll skillfully. ORDER - Oyako special: salmon toro with ponzu sauce. Delish! Only 5 pieces though. - Omakase: too much wasabi we could feel it through our nose. Fish quality was great. We got 8 pieces/$25. Bf's fave was the yellowtail. I loved the salmon toro. Overall, service was great. The waiter refilled our waters adequately. It's not an intimate date night spot bc there's lotsa of kids around. Very family-oriented. Prices were reasonable too for the area. Only complaint was that we sat at the bar by the wall, which kind of obstructs the view of the itamae. And since we ordered the omakase, it was awkward for the itamae to place our sushi on the plate. read more

If you order the tempura ice cream, don't let them do the silly cheap fire trick-- the sake ruined the taste of the crispy tempura shell and pooled at the bottom of the ice cream Definitely plan on coming back here; it is definitely crowded often and the service can be a little slow because of the popularity. Must have is the ceviche salad, which was an excellent balance of vinaigrette, pepper and generous portions of sashimi. We shared the sushi deluxe, which is well made but the sushi rice was slightly sour for my taste. Okonomiyaki (vegetarian) helped keep us full. Chawan mushi (part of the board of specials that you should check out on the wall before you order) was super tender and flavorful from the shrimp and fishcake, which they can make bigger portions of it. Takes 15 minutes wait though, which is not bad. The chatter at the sushi bar with regulars, graffiti on the wall, and personalized photos and cultural items all speak to the history of this place. This place gets crowded! There are so many sushi and Japanese places on Flatbush and this one gets so crowded I had to try it. A lot of families were there so it seems to be family friendly and have high chairs. We got the egg custard and crab cakes for appetizer. I got the Brooklyn roll. All of the food was mediocre to good. I then asked if they could do a cream cheese and eel roll (weird I know but I was feeling it) and they obliged. Overall, all of the food was OK but nothing wowed me. I was sad they didn't have beef nagamaki. In fact they don't have any beef options on the menu at all. My friend got the salmon belly toro and it seemed fresh. For dessert we tried the fried banana with ginger ice cream and the fried green tea ice cream. The fried ice cream had way too much batter on it and was too thick on the outside. They came over and poured some sort of alcohol on it and then lit it on fire for second seconds until the fluid burned out. GEIDO is non-assuming but very, very good. Especially at the price point. Where else can you get a 5 piece omakase for $15? Hell of a deal. For three of us, we each did the omakase, orders of both types of seaweed salad (black was very fishy), and a shared Obama roll (tuna, salmon and yellowtail with masago and eel sauce). The Obama roll was excellent. Would definitely get that again. For our omakase, we each got: seabass, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and butterfish. A nice selection of fish I probably otherwise wouldn't have ordered (and isn't that the point of omakase?). I'm always a fan of salmon and yellowtail, both of which were great. The butterfish was a nice surprise. Nice smooth, fatty texture (like some sort of dairy-based spread that I can't put my finger on). Either way, I think I may have fallen in love with butterfish at GEIDO. Staff was friendly, service was quick, and the place was lively. We got there pretty early so there was a negligible wait, but by the time we were leaving, there was a line out the door! Get there early! read more

As soon as my father, sister, and I walked in we were promptly greeted by the smiling faces of all the staff. The restaurant was completely full and we were told that we should expect a half hour wait. There is a super tiny waiting room right when you enter the restaurant that couldn't hold more that seven people. It was large enough to hold the three people in my party along with a man and his daughter however. After a little under half an hour we were ushered in and brought to our table. We looked around the now considerably more empty area and took in the artwork that adorned the walls of the store. It appeared to be pictures and words that previous customers had written straight onto the walls with markers! The fact that they let their customers customize the area really gave the place a fun and relaxed atmosphere. As soon as we were brought to our table our waitress gave us water and our menus. We ordered many appetizers such as the vegetable Dumplings, the shrimp Tempura, the 6 piece California rolls, and many more. Each and every one was unique and delicious. Once the entrees came we all couldn't wait to see how Geido could possibly do better than the fantastic appetizers we ate. We were not disappointed. The entrees were filling and packed with flavor. Despite our bulging stomachs we all decided to get desert to end the night. I got the green tea mochi which came with two pieces. It was simple yet tasty. My father got the Banana Tempura with green tea ice cream. It came drizzled in chocolate and after sneaking a bite or two from him I can confidently declare...it was wonderful! Every dish we ordered was given to us by our wonderful waiter who had no trouble explaining what a few of the meal were to us. There are a large amount of vegetarian options available but meat eaters shouldn't shy away as there are plenty meat centered meals as well. Geido NY BK PH 6:30pm Friday 15th July 2016 Four Stars I just moved to Brooklyn and I am extremely excited to try everything around here. We decided on Geido Sushi and we were not disappointed. We sat the sushi bar in front of the head chef who looked like a character straight out of a comic book. This older, Japanese man with five o'clock shadow wore a short sleeve chef coat with a bit of salt and pepper chest sticking out. Everything he made looked absolutely delicious. I had 32oz Sapporo Beer ($11) in a huge chilled mug. Tiffany had a bottle of shirakawago Nigori. It was barely sweet with fairly high alcohol content. 1. The Wasabi Tako ($3.9) was an interesting blend of slimy octopus with real wasabi. It is not a beginner sushi dish but it sure clears out your sinuses. 2. Agedashi Tofu ($5.8) is really best way to eat soybean curd. They cut firm silken tofu into cubes, dust them in potato starch, and then deep fry them until golden yellow color. The dish is topped dashi mix with mirin and soy sauce. It is then finished with scallions and radish. The tofu sat in the broth too long which made the tofu a bit soggy. 3. Yam and Squash Only Tempura ($6). The breading was light, slightly salty. The squash was firm but pliable. I didn't get to try a sweet potato because someone ate them all. 4. Cannonball ($7) was a ball of Spicy Tuna on top of slices of avocado in a bowl of ponzu sauce. It was a very filling and tasty snack. 5. Omakase Sushi ($15) it was a great deal for the 5 pieces of Nigiri. Butterfish is Ginger and Sesame. Salmon with shiso, radish, and tobiko. White Fish with real wasabi. Tuna with bull's blood. Yellowtail with fish eggs. Tiff also got a tamago. The egg was light, airy, and almost sweet tasting. All of the rice was warm, with slight taste of vinegar and sugar. 6. The Ms. Pepper ($8) roll with yellow tail, pickled jalapeños, and masago. It had a nice spice to it. Overall, the food was great; the prices were reasonable; the servers were polite. This is a legit sushi spot welcomed by full Japanese staff. The artistry of sushi making surprised me. I had a front row seat to the careful attention to detail of the cutting of the fish, plating of the plenty of pieces of fish. We ordered the house hot sake with several rolls. But the highlight of the meal was definitely the sushi a la carte. I ordered a salmon toro, porgy, branzino and yellowtail. They were all delicious, but the piece that really stood out and had unique flavor was the branzino. I think the porgy and branzino are specialties and suggest try them while its still on the menu. Loved this sushi spot right off the Q train- my boyfriend and stopped her for dinner after work. We are big fans of Sushi dates and we've been trying to find our favorite in the area for a while now. Loving the interior- colorful graffiti filled walls as if they gave some kids a bunch of paint and let them go crazy! Darn, darn, darn! So wanted this to be awesome and it really was just fine. The decor does not affect my decision at all, but it was nice to see a kid friendly place with aspirations of quality cooking/sushi preparation. The menu was so inviting but the ultimate presentation and, most of all, taste, was quite a letdown. Fried oysters - perfectly fine. Okonomiyaki: they no longer have the seafood version on their menu. The vegetable version was so clunky and chunky, overstuffed with nearly raw and poorly planked pieces of cabbage, making it difficult to cut and eat. I prefer versions that are more delicate with smaller vegetables. Cannon ball: terrible. Fish felt like remnant quality. Ponzu sauce was no different than standard soy - no tangy punch. Completely lackluster. We had 3 special rolls: all had tiny, microscopic pieces of fish in the roll, no fish on the outside. One had promised eel and we expected it to be presented in the typical fashion of a special roll with the eel on the outside. Nope. For one roll, we requested no mango and they left it in anyway. I suspect they did so because without it, the roll would have virtually been empty. Service was meh. Took 10 minutes before I stepped up to the register to get my card back. Overall, so sad to have longed to visit this place for so long, only to find that it did not meet expectations. Back to the drawing board... read more

First of all, I like to address that the people working there actually speak Japanese!!! It's not one of those Japanese restaurants run by Chinese people. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant, that means the food must be good. I could be wrong but who knows. Ordered the green seaweed, it's a cold appetizer, not too sweet and very refreshing to eat on a hot day. I really liked that dish. I also ordered the salmon skin roll which was tasty as well. There was a good amount of salmon skin in the roll. I can't complain about quantity. I stepped into Geido after a long day of moving boxes, etc. I recently (as of today) have a new Brooklyn local office/ space. After coordinating the movers (who did not speak English), I came down 7th Avenue in search of food, alcohol, and (maybe) a good time. I walked past the window for Geido and saw many happy people (including one of the sushi chefs who appeared to be drinking tequila) and decided to give it a try. Decidedly, it was a good decision, one of my better ones. I walked into 2 birthdays and one memorial. Everyone looked to be having a good time, the wait staff and sushi chefs included. I ended up ordering the sashimi appetizer - salmon with avocado wrapped in cucumber - as the waitress suggested that the salmon was very fresh. Then I followed it with a chirashi and hot saki. I was immediately introduced to the birthdays (there were 2) and the memorial (someone who died in Iraq). Everyone was very nice; I shared saki with one of the girls I met. As for the food, the salmon was very fresh and a great recommendation. The wait staff was also very helpful; I will be back. Side note: I wish I had been in Chinatown, because I would have loved to follow the sushi with karaoke. read more
