My favorite restaurant in the whole world was a place in East hanover NJ called tomo cuisine closed a few years ago and something about getting takeout here for me and my mom made me feel a similar vibe..... the fish was all noticeably very fresh and we got a LOT of food for two but i thought it was reasonably priced for Gud qual sushi in new york. This place doesn't just look like an old school sushi joint-- it's been in business since 1985. I wonder what the neighborhood was like at the time, but to this day you can find most seats filled with folks enjoying their fresh fish at killer prices. Expect a no frills, hospitable place with an overwhelmingly lengthy menu and a wall covered in graffiti & scribbles. We waltzed in about half an hour before they were set to close for the night and they gladly ushered us in. If you're familiar with your typical sushi menu then you'll recognize the menu here. They have specials written on an expo board on the wall, and you can ask your server for recommendations, but I'd recommend any of their assorted sashimi and roll specials. The fish is fresh, food is made to order pretty speedily, and the prices are very reasonable. Nothing I had was mind blowing and I found the smell of fish in the place a tad overwhelming (even as a pescatarian who subsists on a heavy seafood diet) so I could more easily see this as a spot I'd order takeout or delivery from. As more and more upscale restaurants open in the neighborhood, Geido is a vestige of an old Prospect Heights that is quickly getting swallowed up by new developments and tasting menus. read more

Where do I even begin... I've been coming to this restaurant for the past 15 years of my life (I'm 18) and the memories I have here amazing. The reason I've taken so long to write this review is cause I don't want the line to get any longer but in all honesty they deserve all of the customers they can get. The food is consistently fresh and delicious with Osamu bringing in technique and precision to all his dishes. Came to Brooklyn to meet up with an old work friend and he recommended this place, said he's been coming here several times a week for 30 YEARS!!!--so of course I was looking forward to it. We came as soon as the place opened for dinner and the restaurant quickly filled up but it wasn't too loud or obnoxious. As for the food...Welp. I can never eat at another sushi restaurant ever again, this was SO delicious, the most delicious sushi and omakase experience I've ever had. This place has a lot of nostalgia for me, as it was my neighborhood sushi spot when I moved to Prospect Heights almost a decade ago. Over the years, Geido has never failed me. This place is always busy/packed and for good reason. It may not have the very best sushi in the city, but you seriously get the very best bang-for-your-buck. It's such a great neighborhood vibe here - love the graffiti, which gives it very much an urban/casual feel. The staff and chefs are friendly and work quick. I recently came back with some friends, and it brought back all the great memories here. Everything I have loved about this place is intact. One of my top 5 restaurants! This place is a true gem! I'm Japanese and me and my mother have been coming here forever. It is some of the best sushi you can get in nyc, hands down. The owner and his son are some of the nicest and most genuine people ever, they literally remember everyone! There's always a little bit of a wait because the space isn't huge but it's so worth it. Bustling neighborhood sushi spot. Geido is part of the great cluster of sushi and Japanese spots in Prospect Heights and North Slope. We walked here for dinner after catching a basketball tournament at the Barclays Center. We arrived during peak dining time on a Friday but were able to land the last two seats in the restaurant at the sushi bar counter. The atmosphere is more casual than some of the other sushi spots nearby; coupling that with the close proximity of tables and seating gives the restaurant a cozy feel. I started with some hot tea to warm up. We also shared a miso soup with salmon. The tea and soup together hit the spot! I was toasty in no time and ready for a Sapporo on draft. We also shared the stuffed shishito tempura. I haven't seen that elsewhere. It was simple yet creative. We both liked it and I'd recommend giving it a shot if it's available. For the main course, we shared the sushi platter for two. Nice variety of sushi featuring two pieces of 9 different types of seafood. There were cuts you wouldn't find at a typical neighborhood spot, but nothing I'd expect at an exclusive omakase counter. The variety offers a balanced middle tier at an extremely reasonable priced. Ambiance: Very positive ambience and good vibes. Best to sit by the preparation table, as you can see how food is prepared. Service: The service is ok, nothing special. Our waiter didn't know which soup starts with N, when it was on the menu, we couldn't pronounce it unfortunately. He looked like he had no idea, how ironic. "Salmon special soup" was served in a plastic cup, which was very hot and possibly melting plastic into the soup. They do have ceramic bowls, but they did not use it for such a hot soup. Omakase chef's choice of sushi was consisting of a simple tuna sushi, salmon belly that looked like shredded broken piece of small salmon, squid sushi, eel, and crab, not memorable pieces. $25 dollars for 5 pieces. Not worth it at all. Chef's choices should be more special pieces not regular sushi pieces that one can get for lunch anywhere in Brooklyn for lunch for less price. Moved into the neighborhood few months ago and we're looking for a regular sushi spot. Geido's window display looked cool/ like it was a good restaurant so we went for the first time 2 weeks ago and I went again last week because I liked it so much. Its been opened since 1985 !!! The restaurant is a homey joint with graffiti on the walls, people go here for their weekday dinners and patrons have been coming for years ( our landlord for the last 15 years)! The sake prices are reasonable. The rolls are fire . I eat a lot of sushi and have been scarred by a lot of cheap sushi places. Geidos rolls are reasonably priced, service is quick and attentive and food is fresh and delicious. Our favorite rolls are the amazonas ( so many crunchies you will be super full) and the spicy scallop. Standard rolls that are pretty fire are - eel and avo, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura. Try their California roll which has tobiko in it which was BOMB !!!! read more

LOVE Geido, it's truly a hidden gem. Great fish for great prices. I recently came back with friends to try the salmon special roll. As a salmon lover, this roll did not disappoint. Service was super nice and friendly. There's usually a bit of a wait and Geido is walk in only, so if you're planning of dinner with anymore than 2 people, I'd recommend arriving a little early to put your name in. It's so worth it though. Every time I eat here I leave so happy. And I love showing this place to friends since it's such a fun inside. Definitely the best value for sushi in the area! If you are looking for a local neighborhood spot that you can prob order multiple times a month without breaking the bank, Geido is a great option. I think Geido is much more known for their rolls. They have an extensive menu with sushi/sashimi, rolls, hot dishes (katsu, teriyaki), soups and noods, apps, etc. Since we were craving sushi, and Sushi Lin was not taking walk ins, we decided to order the 5 piece omakase, a sushi combo, and some apps. - 5 piece omakase ($16.50): my bf was not super impressed with the selection, and overall seemed like the fish quality was not on par with places like Ki - Geido sushi deluxe: comes with 9 pieces and a CA roll, but we subbed for spicy tuna for extra $1.50. I really liked the spicy tuna roll! and sushi fish was also just ok - tempura small: came with 4 pieces of veg and 2 shrimp. I like the light and crispy batter! would order again - edamame: a little on the dry side, probably would pass on this next time and try a different appetizer Overall, I'd come back to try one of their rice bowls or soups/noodles and rolls but wouldn't order the sushi again read more

Stuffed shishito pepper - very good, nice and crunch and great texture Yellowtail, mackerel ginger and umeshiso rolls were all very solid and fresh. Rice was flavored nicely. Fried oyster was delicious and super fresh, would recommend this Out of the other items we got would skip the pressed salmon and avocado sushi which was more rice than fish. The shrimp and veggie tempura were also pretty mediocre. The updated new menu is clearer & concise which is nice. Yet, Spicy tuna sushi was tasteless- not spicy nor actual Tuna; shrimp shumai dumplings were altered from bite sized ground shrimp portions to each contain a shrimp inside leaving the impression "Bigger is not Better." I feel like a traitor writing this review as I have been going to the restaurant for over 30 years. At one point I ate there twice a week. Unfortunately, it is not what it used to be. I have overlooked the change in the menu, which is a downgrade and removed many of the better rolls. But I brought friends tonight, promising them a great meal for a special occasion. When one of our party received his roll, there was a hair wrapped around the top part. He sent it back and they did remove it from the bill. However, the owner's son, who knows me as a long time customer, came over to us and instead of profusely apologizing told us that the hair "was long and blonde" so it could not be theirs. Really?? I am not sure what he was getting at, but I was shocked. I have brought countless friends there and that was BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. The worst part is that this happened once before 3 years ago and the same guy barely agreed to take it off the bill. Twice in 30 years is admittedly not bad. But the response and the treatment is UNACCEPTABLE. I hope they will take this into account in the future. And I hope they will get back to serving the great food with the great menu they had back in the day. read more

Discover this place by chance because neighboring places were booked. This fairly hidden place looked cool indoors as if I discovered a hidden gem. Although full, the host did a great job fitting my party in at an opportune time before the lines grew unweildy. Geido is a reliable, charming, and quality restaurant with fast and lovely service. I haven't dined in but love the art and ambiance of the place. I've ordered takeout from them a lot and it is always exceptional for the price. My friends who have tried them while staying with me have said so as well, unprompted. My friend and I were craving sushi one day and decided to order from Geido due to the positive reviews he heard. We placed an ordered for the 7 sushi piece set and the 9 sushi piece set along with edamame. When we arrived for pickup, it was very fast and prompt and the staff was very friendly. Everyone was wearing masks and greeted me and it was a smooth transition. The sushi itself was very fresh and very filling. It had the perfect amount of rice and the tuna and cucumber rolls were also very yummy. The edamame wasn't extremely salted like other restaurants so I really enjoyed that too.
