I won't repeat what everyone else has said about GCI being a monopoly that charges unfair amounts of money for crappy service -- you guys can read every other review written here if you want to read more about that. Instead, I want to talk about my other complaints.
1. Want to use your mobile hot-spot while away from your wireless data? FORGET ABOUT IT. I kid you not, when using my hot-spot, internet access is slow and disconnects every 30-40 minutes. As a college student, I have lost work or received poor grades as a result of my poor LTE signal disconnecting while I am trying to submit work on multiple occasions.
2. Think you're getting unlimited data on a phone plan from GCI? Think again! A text I received from GCI regarding my UNLIMITED DATA PLAN -- "Usage Alert...Your data usage this month has reached 34GB. Until your next bill you can still use unlimited data; however your speeds may be reduced...using TurboZone and Wi-Fi will help avoid reduced speeds." I have unlimited data that I need for school and work, capped at 34GB. Interesting. Real unlimited, if you ask me! If I had TurboZone or Wi-Fi access when neede, I wouldn't need unlimited phone data!
3. My husband tried to drop our internet bill 2 months ago because it is so outrageous high. He changed our plan right before the beginning of a new cycle so the new plan would apply to the new cycle. When the new cycle rolled over, the previous data usage from our bigger plan was still existent despite already being paid for, meaning we immediately were over our data allowance for the cycle. He kept buying buckets of data in order to have internet access, but little changed in speed or ability to use the internet in general. My husband is in the military, and at the time we were apart from each other due to his work. I remember how upset and angry he was while our FaceTime chat kept disconnecting because we wrongly had no data left in our new cycle.
4. GCI signal on Ft. Wainwright is awful. When our internet is not working, my husband has to sit RIGHT next to the window in our home to get LTE access. Military personnel and their families -- be weary of this company and do not expect good coverage on post.
Some of the staff at the Anchorage locations I have talked to are incredible kind -- please don't take your frustrations out on them. The self-obsessed, greedy leadership at GCI are likely to blame. If there were other internet options in Fairbanks, we would drop GCI like a rock and do what we can to elicit a change or drive them out of business. That's how frustrated we are with them. read more
