The Third Strike with Alaska Communications: A Complete Disaster in Customer Service If you're considering doing business with Alaska Communications, do yourself a favor and read this first. You're going to want to think twice before you waste time with this company. Every time our FiWi goes out, it's the same story: the worst tech support experience imaginable. The fastest response I've ever gotten? Seven business days. Yes, you read that right--just to get a callback, which results in the classic "restart your router" advice. Anyone remotely familiar with tech already knows that's the first step! And guess what the real issue always turns out to be? The dish is slightly out of alignment--a problem that takes minutes for a technician to fix, but days to even schedule. Six months ago, after my internet went out and I got no response from ACS, I took to social media. After posting publicly on their Facebook page, they sent a tech out in under an hour! It's sad that the only way they'll care is if you hit them where it hurts--their public image. But this time, it's been even worse. You'll hear a slew of excuses like, "We're understaffed," or "We changed our call tree," or "We can't get to a tech right now." It's pathetic. Here's the kicker: ACS doesn't work weekends. If your internet goes down on a Friday, you're out of luck until Monday. By the time Monday rolls around, they're so backed up, you'll be lucky to get a call that week. I've never heard of a telecommunications company that doesn't staff people on the weekend--anywhere in the world. I'm writing this review using my AT&T hotspot because my home internet has been down for 7 days with zero contact from ACS. This current outage started on a Friday, and no response came over the weekend (because no one works weekends, right?). I call on Monday, but you can't actually talk to a human--they force you into their useless chat system. ACS claimed they called me Monday, but guess what? No missed calls, no voicemails. I checked my logs and screenshotted everything--nothing from ACS. I have screenshots of my call log and Voicemail if anyone cared. As a business owner, I'm constantly on my phone. If there had been a call, I would have seen it. I started another chat on Wednesday, where they once again claimed they had called Monday. I asked them why they didn't leave a voicemail, and had zero response. Today (Friday), I tried again. After explaining the situation once more, the tech support rep tried to contact a technician--after making me wait 15 minutes ,which is fine, he admitted that even he couldn't reach anyone! His solution? Call back into the queue and try to get tech support on the phone--seriously? They can't reach their own techs, but they expect me to magically, do it? The icing on the cake: when you call in, their system links your phone number to your trouble ticket. Except their queue is broken, and it keeps telling me I have NO TROUBLE TICKET. Without a ticket, you can't talk to a human being, and the system tries to force you back into the same broken chat system I've been stuck in for seven days. The ACS employee didn't believe me at first. He actually had to call his own queue before he finally admitted, "I understand where you're coming from now, it is broken and I have no solution." But did that help? No. He couldn't reach a tech internally, and he told me flat-out that I just had to wait. Well, guess what? It's Friday. ACS doesn't work weekends, so I'll be lucky if I hear from them by next week. If I ran my business like ACS, I wouldn't last a week. ACS used to be the only option in many areas, so they treated customers like this because there was no alternative. But now? With STARLINK and other options, you can switch easily. My entire neighborhood used to have ACS, and now I'm the only one left--and, surprise, the only one without internet. Alaskans deserve better. It's embarrassing that a company that's been around so long can treat its customers with such blatant disrespect. Internet is crucial, and the way ACS treats people is absolutely disgraceful. I've given ACS more chances than they deserved--way more than my neighbors. As a business owner, if I treated my customers like this, I'd be out of business in a heartbeat. Being named "Alaska Communications", You would think out of all the places in Alaska, Anchorage (most populous city) would be the place where the service would be pretty good. But no. Possibly the worst internet service in terms of actual internet speed and quality, service and pricing. Just get GCI. My experience has been having simple things like logging into your account turning into a nightmare, customer service not being helpful, and the internet straight up not working for everyone for hours to even days. read more

They told us to call back and talk to a technician yet there is no way to talk to a technician. Straight up scam. how are these people not in prison? They literally wont allow me to pay my outrageous bills. I just hung up. When putting in an order they don't submit it so i had to wait six months then try again. After disconnecting service they continued billing me secretly for a year without telling me. no emails. no paper bills. Absolute scam. Years later, when using them again they did something similar. They never sent me a bill. I was on auto pay then they disconnected my phone for non payment. Then after disconnecting out of frustration there is no way to pay the bill. The lady on the phone literally could not take my money. There was no way to do it digitally either. I tried to give this failure of a company a second and third chance but that was a mistake. I have two landlines. One is for voice, the other for is a fax machine that I threw away more than a year ago. I wanted to deactivate the line previously used for the fax. I called ACS. I was put on hold for 70 minutes and when someone finally answered, I was put on hold and disconnected. I tried their website which requires an account (user I.d. and password) to make any changes. I tried to establish an account, but the website would not accept any user I.d. that I entered. So, I went to their offices on Telephone Avenue. The doors were locked and there was no explanation about why they were closed. This was midday on a Thursday. No, it was not a legal holiday. To me, this appears to be a business about to go under. I guess I'll just stop paying my bill and see what happens. read more

I was impressed by the prompt and thorough ACS tech service when my internet service went down recently. I submitted a request on the ACS website and later that afternoon I got a call from Matt. He walked me through a few diagnostics, and offered suggestions on my usage, and he then sent me a new router. A tech named Tom called a couple of days later and wanted to make sure my new router was working. It worked great for a few days and then had some trouble so I submitted a request on the ACS website and the chat tech line, and a tech named Kyle called promptly and his team reconfigured my new router remotely and my new router works like a champ. I've had ACS for about 25 year - only because they are the only internet provided available in my area. Their customer service has been terrible and I have been downright lied to by them. Recently ACS has taken to raising rates, adding fees without any customer input and essentially no notice. The internet speed are almost always about 1/4 to 1/3 what we are paying for. Frequently we are unable to stream a YouTube video. Thankfully Starlink is coming to Alaska! Maybe now we will have an option besides ACS or no internet. read more

This entity was great until they were purchased by GCI. Within this process they failed to secure existing user accounts leading GCI to falsely claim unpaid services. Previous customers were also unable to review past bills/records when needed and they provided no assurance nor assistance during this transition. When I got cell phone service in AK I refused to utilize GCI due to all of the complaints that I heard from others, but essentially had no choice. ACS is great for their unlimited internet if you are in the area, but that is all. Furthermore, the individual who came to my residence to hook up my internet was extremely unprofessional and invasive going thru different rooms in the home stating that he was simply looking for the cable line. He said that he'd been in my neighborhood previously and was aware that they were either in the living room or master bedroom, yet he proceeded to walk around my entire house to include the bathroom and the kitchen questioning my decor, intellectual capacity and professional abilities which had nothing to do with his job. I assure you that this was not typical "small talk". I felt extremely unsafe and uncomfortable considering. Never had a technician that was so nosey and unprofessional. read more

I live on the north side of Fairbanks and am currently experiencing an internet outage in my area. I called customer service - just got off the phone as a matter of fact. The rep from ACS said they are aware of the outage, have not dispatched a crew and will not until Monday. They made a note on my account regarding the outage and told me I can call customer service on Monday to get a credit for the outage. I could go on here about what I was going to use my internet for this weekend but apparently it's not a concern to ACS so I would think it's best just to keep that to myself. I would advise if you have any - literally ANY other options for internet service maybe choose not to go with ACS unless you really don't need internet or use it sparingly. Up to this point I have experienced no issues with ACS. I am a new customer as of this past Tuesday. Customer service has been great up to this point. I'm plagued with slow internet service and daily drops. Service requests go as long as a month before ACS responds. I finally got serious and filed a complaint with the FCC. I had to cancel. Internet would be down days to weeks at a time. Thankfully Verizon was able to provide OTA service using a jetpack. Unfortunate - I wanted their service to work as it was unlimited, but as others have said - unlimited is only good when it works and it unfortunately was too unreliable to: stream, game, work, or for my kids to use for education. As others have said - customer service was horrible. I'd put multiple tickets in and they'd cancel them without calling me. I suffered for a year and half before I threw in the towel. I wish them the best - if they start laying cable or fiber, they might have a chance. They will have no chance if anyone is able to provide unlimited LTE or 5G internet. Release my home number from ACS to port out of their services. I have had several telephone calls with Alaska Communications Services (ACS). This company has kept my number on hold since December 2020. When I sold my house, I placed my home number hold to keep my phone number, since my bill was on auto pay I discovered around March/April 2020 I was charged a line maintenance fee for a nonexistent telephone line. In addition, I had nearly $200 credit that was never refunded to me, ACS used that to auto pay my $5 hold fee that was already on auto-pay. ACS never remedied my account on the $8 line maintenance fee for 4months. Now that I moved into a new residence I called, verified my number was active. ACS scheduled 21Oct&18Nov residence visit, why I do not know...I never ok'd this, when I spoke with a ACS representative, ACS said my number was active to port it out. I have received a couple emails and telephone calls of ACS service scheduled visits for Oct 21 and 18 Nov. In my last recent attempt I spoke to Alliyah on Oct 22, the ACS supervisor Treveon was busy, I said I would call back. I called again, Oct 22 and spoke to Tianna to talk with a ACS supervisor she again stated Treven the supervisor, that person was not available and Treven would call me back. I explained everything for the ACS Supervisor, now it is the 29th, and no call back from a ACS Supervisor or ACS. ACS has been continuing to take my information over the phone, I cannot get this resolved, ACS are continuing to schedule to services visit, again I do not know why. I even had ACS person out at my home doing something (attached photo). This is now going into a November and this lingering on for a month they seem to be avoiding processing porting my number out to charge my fees and take that fee from my nearly $200 credit that has been dwindling for the last 10 months. So glad I switched to ACS from GCI more than two years ago. The unlimited Data saved us from some very high bills at GCI. Switching cut our bill in half plus we have unlimited data which we never had with GCI; we were always being charged for going over our data cap. Don't let speed comparisons fool you. You will never achieve the speeds that GCI promises. At ACS speeds we are able to watch movies in 4K. The only real difference is in the upload speed which actually is probably the more important. ACS will be lesser so you may have to monitor activities that happen at the same time. Example would be that you probably can't have two people watching different 4K movies at the same time. I take classes online and internet speed has never been an issue. Only when my son for example tries to upload a 4k video does the difference between GCI and ACS show itself simply because GCI will handle more upload bandwidth. However, if you don't do a lot of heavy duty uploading like this then I wouldn't get into the speed comparisons between the two companies. Instead, look at the data cap and the price paid. GCI unlimited data cap is twice the price of ACS and that's a pretty hefty price to pay in comparison. ACS support has also been great and is still local. GCI has outsourced and you'll feel this if you ever call or receive support online. read more

A ridiculous amount of time from the consumers stand point but I was willing to accept it based on the price offered. I was told that a customer service agent would call to set the date. Nope...you get an email saying this is the time and to be home or else lose the install. And...it is over 20 days away! Something ACS needs to be honest about when you call...not AFTER they get you to sign up. We regularly have issues with our ACS phone service (we live where we can't rely on cell phone exclusively or we'd have dropped them long ago) and our home internet and the dread I feel when I know I have to dial that number - that I know by heart - to call their customer service line and try to find a way to get their insane phone tree to work without it just going completely silent. What 21st century business has a phone tree that goes completely silent when it is still connect and you're on hold? A COMMUNICATIONS company apparently. And then randomly, it will cut me off and hang up after 20 or more minutes of waiting. Then there's all of the times they claim there is nothing wrong with our service and yet our internet goes off line constantly. Our local IT person has checked and rechecked and even replaced hardware "Just in case". And there was the time for over a year both our neighbor and our house had perpetually dropped calls on the landline. People calling us thought we were never home and had no voice mail. The service person kept agreeing with us there was something amiss but the tech/service people "didn't believe us" or their own service person. We finally had to document for weeks with a calendar (and have our friends do it how many times they tried to call and we didn't receive the calls). Ridiculous. Finally they agreed their equipment was to blame. NEVER once did they offer any type of apology or financial credit for this crappy service. Now, same thing with internet. First and foremost let it be known that I am a Blackberry person more than and apple or htc person. I am simple, and againt your typical 20 year old I am sure, I dont use my apps on a constant basis. Given this info, I walked into this store with the impression that I was going to look specifically at the Blackberries (sp? haha). When I walked in and told them that my iPhone screen cracked and I was looking into getting a Blackberry, the two women behind the desk nearly had a heart attack. It wasnt any sooner that they started questioning me why I wanted a Blackberry and tried to tell me about how they never sell them and how horrible they were, essentially. I mean if you dont sell them a lot thats whatever but dont go dissing my phone of choice. I was literally trying to keep myself from feeling offended! Just because it doesnt work for you doesnt mean it wont work for me. She told me a story about how a guy came in with a broken Blackberry and she begged him to get another phone because she couldnt fix it. I was thinking to myself "Really? Its not my fault that you dont know how to fix a certain kind of phone. It is your job to be knowledgable about your products and their repair if you insist on having them on your show floor." I walked out shortly after we went through all the other phones EXCEPT for the ones I orginally went in to look at. The girls had a nice attitude and the store was clean, etc. But when I go in there and walk out feeling like my preference of phone got bashed is rather bothersome. Im sure they do a wonderful job at setting up plans and other services, but selling phones is not their cup of tea. They need to be more thoughtful of the customers needs as opposed to wasting their time with a selection of phones I have no interest in. read more

Recently I had an issue with streaming on my TV so I submitted a trouble ticket. 24 hours later I got a detailed response with several ideas on how to solve the issue. I had resolved the issue before I got the response but then I got a follow up email from the tech specialist to see if everything was okay and Netflix was up and running. When I call to try and log in, they CONFIRM my email and my password letter by letter and yet "nothing matches the record" when I try to log in. After 25 years of being a GCI customer, we changed internet services to ACS, due to the huge mess GCI made of migrating from cable to streaming services. That pleasant experience was a painful 12 months of utter chaos. Held our nose when opening a new account with ACS, as I had read so many negative reviews about their Cust Service. The new Fiber internet is working well, and happy with it so far! Their billing and their lack of communications and follow-up from their Customer Service Dept is a joke! Beware, if you need them to help you after your installation; clearly there is little if any collaboration between their CS representatives.
