We've been to this store several times for work on our Macs and to purchase items. Although they did the repairs, I do not like going in because the young men at the front counter and the repair guys in the back show next to no interest in me as a customer. When I asked questions, the tech guys just looked at me and made no effort to answer my questions or be proactive about understanding them. In fact, one fellow mumbled something and walked away to talk to the other techs. The guys at the front counter barely speak to me, offer very little help, and couldn't answer questions I would think they should know given they are Apple distributors. My husband likes them better than I do so perhaps they are uncomfortable with women; either that or they are dismissive. It's one of the two, because I can barely get them to even speak to me even when I've been in without my husband. They did accept the return of a lap cooler I thought was uncomfortable, but the guy had an attitude about it I didn't like, and when I said something to him about having to bring in two new Macs and wondered if it had anything to do with their being built in China, he didn't even try to respond or make the moment comfortable. He just looked at me and shrugged a little, and did the business without even a polite word. So, I avoid going in there and I buy directly from Apple because the prices are the same and Apple provides free shipping! read more

I think the reason these guys have tepid reviews is that their employees don't know anything about computers. I went in looking for a 24" iMac a few months ago before the 21" and 27" came out. I stood in front of one for about 20 minutes and watched employees float by like the ghost of christmas past. I was the only customer in the store. Finally one drifted up to me. "Is there anything I can help you with?" he queried. I asked, "do you know what graphics processor is in this iMac? First he looked at the card next to the mac and carefully reviewed it for that information. Of course, I'd examined the card 20 minutes before and he didn't find anything. He called to the other young guy and asked him. The other guy said he would have to look it up in a book in the back. On a mac, if you click the Apple menu, About this Mac , More Info - the computer itself will tell you. I don't expect everyone to know this. I do however expect the staff of an Apple retailer to know it. I baited the poor guy a few more times and got him to tell me a Macbook had a Core i7 processor, and that Adobe Premier wouldn't run on the mac. These statements are the equivalent of your florist telling you to preserve your roses with battery acid. The guys were really nice, but it was consistently demonstrated that they didn't know the first thing about any of the computer in their inventory. All this being said, they are far preferable to Alaska Mac Store. If you want to buy Macs locally, MacHaus is your best bet. They teach basic Apple classes, and bring up speakers to talk about different technologies. I went to one. It was great. If you're going to buy a mac here - make sure you know what you want first. He is a great and honest Mac Pro. The hard drive on my Macbook died one day morning and it failed to start. I did not have my data / system backed up. After a little research and searching online, I am glad I found this place. Dexter is a pro. He knows what he is talking about. The price he charges for his service is very reasonable. No hidden fees and no sales tactics. You don't need to worry about fending off unnecessary purchase. He is very clear about what he can do or cannot do. He has never charged me for a diagnosis, and has always been able to fix things that Best Buy and the MacStore for some reason can't. His prices are a fraction of theirs. Locally owned nice guy. I'm very disappointed. I called to schedule drive duplication service, and they said that they would do it. I explained in detail what I needed. We agreed over the phone that I could bring it in. So I bring in the drive, with explicit instructions of how I would like the service, they told me they would not do it... period. I tried to find the original person I talked to over the phone and he was not willing to find that person. It was a waste of my time to even bother with these people. If they didn't want to do the service, at least tell me no. As much as I would like to support local business, I would say pass on these guys. I have found much better support from other techs. read more

Fast honest fix for my macbook pro.....replaced a fan and sold me a new battery.......he is my new mac repair guy!

I've had terrible experiences with this store, despite initially spending a lot of money there. I've heard terrible things about them from many people in town. Their customer service is very bad, and their return policy is absurd. They declined to honor a return on a product that malfunctioned within a few weeks after purchase, even though I tried to return it after only a couple of weeks, with the receipt, but without the box (I loved it until it malfunctioned...who would have thought I'd want to return it?). An earlier time I tried to return speakers that didn't work, right out of the box, and was told I'd have to pay a restocking fee (even though I simply wanted an exchange). The manager said they didn't want to let people try to return things fraudulently (??). I asked (nicely) to have the owner call me, so I could plead my case and request reconsideration. He never called. I emailed later. No one responded. I brought a Mac in for a warranty repair once. They repaired it grudgingly, looking for a reason to deny the repair, even though Apple reimburses them. They were not friendly, and have never been friendly any time I've been to the store (they generally appear unhappy). When I or my girlfriend or friends have first entered the store, we haven't been greeted or even acknowledged. When I've told other people about these experiences, without fail, every one of them has said they've heard the same bad things about the store. Because they're the only store in town that sells Mac computers, they get plenty of business and will do fine, I'm sure. But it's terrible. I can't bring myself to ever return there, not out of spite, but because I can't count on them to stand by the products they sell and take care of things if something goes wrong. I will always buy from Apple directly online, or from another store if I happen to be out of town when I want something. I strongly recommend you do the same. read more

I needed a fan replaced in my Macbook Pro and couldn't do it myself - so I took it in. It cost $83.00 parts and labor (rather pricey for a 15 minute job), but no choice so I went ahead. The front counter person had asked for my password so they could do a diagnostic; I explained to him that I didn't want a diagnostic, just the fan replaced. He sort of frowned at that, but wrote "Customer wants no diags run and only wants the fun thats making the nosie replaced" (the spelling errors are not mine) on the work order and warned me that if anything else was wrong with the computer it wouldn't get fixed. I was okay with that since I didn't want to be charged for anything else, and as far as I knew my computer was fine otherwise. I got my computer back two days later (pretty fast, I admit, since the tech said he had to order the fan I needed) and the first thing he said was how my DVD drive was old and acting up. I thought this was odd, since I'd never noticed any performance issues with it before, but didn't say anything. He went on to admonish me for not installing a firmware update (which he had installed for me) and said that he *had* to reinstall my system after that. At this point I was both worried and irritated - worried that my computer might not be in proper working order and irritated that he had taken it upon himself to "fix" problems that I didn't ask him to fix and, as far as I know, didn't exist. My worries trumped my irritation however (I need my computer on a daily basis for some personal work I do), and I took my computer home to check it out. At first the only thing I found wrong was a newer and uglier version of iTunes, (which I swapped out for the old one on my backups); but soon I found two more serious problems: The lesser of these was that Safari was significantly less stable than it was before (crashing several times within a few hours). I think I've fixed this problem now by downloading a software update for Safari that he had neglected to reinstall with the rest of my system. The bigger problem is that now my DVD drive thinks that several of my DVDs (commercially bought, not self-burned) are blank, in spite of having run them just fine on this very machine before I took it in to be fixed. I've looked on line, and found a few other people with similar (but usually not identical) problems, but have found no solution. The tech at the shop was most unhelpful with these problems. With regards to Safari, he simply said that it has always been somewhat unreliable; and with regard to the DVD player, he at first suggested that it might be a problem with the DVDs! Later he suggested that it might be the DVD player's hardware wearing out, but flatly denied that the problem might stem from the firmware update that he'd installed without permission. In any case, I won't be setting foot in this shop again, and I strongly suggest that you don't either. read more

This guy is a serious genius. He knows it all about apple and I love referring people to him. It's so stressful to lose pictures of babies and their childhood, events, and deployments. This guy recovered it all and got me all set up with a new hard drive. He even put the little black circle feet on the bottom of my MacBook Pro just for courtesy, free of charge. His prices are very fair and reasonable too. I wish more people knew about him then just going with the apple/mac store for repairs and getting charged double when he does a better job and is way more thorough. It's more of a one on one with him, so he actually makes sure his customer is satisfied and gets the full understanding of everything instead of having to rush to the next customer. I honestly felt so taken care of and it was such a relief knowing all my data was recovered. Thanks gsx! You work miracles. read more

Poor service, poor communication. I paid for a transfer of my data when I had my hard drive replaced and they didn't complete it. When I ask why not the reply was the hard drive had failed. When I got home and plugged it into my external enclosure it worked perfectly. So they were either lying or incompetent. You decide. read more

I have been continually let down by the Mac Haus. I don't understand why they pretend to sell items there because nothing is EVER in stock. I haven't been able to complete the last 5 of my purchases at the Anchorage store! This coupled with their lack of customer service certainly explains why there is always great parking! read more

Excellent service, patient with questions. Note that when you walk in, you have to wait to be helped until the customers ahead of you have been helped; they will take the time with whomever they are currently helping until their issues/questions/sales have been addressed completely. This may prove frustrating to some who want to interrupt--I have been on both ends of this, and appreciate the time and attention when it is my turn. I have been to the MacHaus three times in the past year, and each time met with courtesy and competence. The first time, after I got my iPhone (from AT and T, not Mac Haus), a gentleman patiently helped me when I came by with some questions regarding the iPhone, which AT and T could not answer. He also answered an iPod question (I had not bought the iPod there.) He also showed me different laptops at my request, and discussed the WiFi router "Airport." My second visit, I walked in and purchased the "Airport," with my questions thoroughly answered. It has worked flawlessly since, and was just as described. 3rd visit was this week, I walked in to look at laptops, asked tons of questions, which were courteously answered, with no pressure applied. I will be buying a laptop there, when new ones arrive. I could purchase online, but value the expertise and local availability here. I am female, and the male employees have always been appropriately attentive and courteous, contrary to experience of the other reviewer. They also were so to a teen gal who it turned out was waiting for her parents. I highly recommend this store and its employees, and am pleased to have such in Anchorage. The employees do work on commission (which I inquired about or would not have known, as they do not push themselves, but the products.) All-in-all, a satisfying experience, what I wanted from a specialty store representing apple and related products exclusively.
