Planned outages were communicated as "up to an hour" between Nov 1-5. In reality, service went down multiple times during business hours for several hours at a time, and then again for four hours on Nov 6. I work remotely and planned my schedule based on GCI's notice. Result: 9 hours of PTO lost. What followed was weeks of being bounced between tech support, customer service, and billing; multiple 40-minute calls; a promised callback that never happened; and endless "pending approval." GCI stated a $50 credit was approved, but weeks later it still has not appeared on my bill. Because the issue dragged past the due date, I also missed out on Atmos/Alaska Airlines miles. Hands down the worst customer service experience I've had. If you rely on your internet for work, be warned, their outages were far longer than communicated and resolution has been nonexistent. worst customer service experience of my life. read more

Absolutely horrendous dogsh*t service AND they have a monopoly in Alaska so they are the ONLY service available. When the internet goes out statewide, their solution is to cut all contact from human beings working at GCI and have an automated message playm mostly consisting of "There are outages throughout the state. There is no need to call at this time". After the outage is over, you can ask for "credit" for the nonfunctional internet, but they give you the bare minimum so you remain a slave to their system. read more

Proud to call themselves local, however tech support isn't even within the U.S. Now they are charging an extra monthly fee for customers who prefer the (astronomical) bills to be sent out on paper. There are many reasons to dislike the quality of service that GCI provides. I'll share one today. It took me one button click last month to upgrade my plan so that I could have faster internet for a project I had last month. But to downgrade back to my old plan today, I had to call in and waste 18 minutes of my time on a work day to go through a many step process to downgrade. If you're an internet company and can easily provide an upgrade option online but not downgrade, you have a problem. If GCI gives me one more reason, I will switch to Starlink --an internet service that I can pause at will and that will travel with me throughout Alaska. It's a very tempting option at this point. read more

My son purchased Mobile phone service from GCI for a period of time he was in Alaska this summer. He had just switched service from T Mobile to Verizon. Due to Verizon's policy he could not unlock the new phone for the period of time he was in Alaska. GCI service requires a cell phone to be unlocked. We explained this to GCI and the fact that their service was never able to be used by our son. They did not care. They essentially said, this is a prepaid service. Not our problem your son could not unlock his phone. We have your money. No refund. read more

I have tried really hard to give GCI the benefit of the doubt, for years, but...they just continue to cause anger, disappointment, and utterly waste my time. Their home internet is the most positive aspect of them. Sure, it's a grossly overpriced monopoly but, at least you get the speeds you pay for. Their wireless, on the other hand, is utter garbage. I tried out their wireless for only $25/month because I have their $175/month home internet plan and...it's not even worth that. I ran two SIM cards in my phone, one from GCI and one from Verizon. In downtown Anchorage, on 5G, the GCI speeds were faster than Verizon (which was only running on 4G, btw)...but only by about 50-60%. Everywhere else, Verizon was faster. In many places, GCI SIM had zero signal at all, while the Verizon SIM had 4G. Not only that, the GCI SIM does not allow you to use data while on a phone call. So, let's say you're on the phone with a credit card company and they need to text you a validation code...they CAN'T. GCI mobile pros: - In downtown anchorage it's 1.5X faster - Comes with WiFi tethering (my ancient, truly unlimited Verizon plan does not) GCI mobile cons: - It's slower outside of Anchorage, it's about 1000X slower (no exaggeration) in Talkeetna, for example. - In many parts of the road system, it has zero signal - It's slower in the lower 48 - It's even slower in the parts of "The Bush" I've been to (King Salmon) where most of the selling point for GCI allegedly is - In fact, when Verizon is ROAMING ON GCI, it's faster than the native GCI SIM, lol - When I have the GCI SIM activated, I can't use data and talk at the same time. I recently had a corporate credit card declined and I couldn't even get the confirmation email code while on the phone with them - It actively throttles downloads in a way that would make even Comcast blush. How do I know this? Because when I do something like download a podcast, it will download at about 0.03 MB/s. If I turn on a VPN (which makes it so GCI can't see my network traffic) it magically boosts up to around 13 MB/s. Usually a VPN will actually slow down your internet, because your traffic is re-routed through additional servers but...with GCI, it makes your connection 433X faster! Note: GCI has 5G in Alaska, and Verizon only has 4G LTE (as for now)...and Verizon is STILL faster. Their mobile claims, are deceptive at best, and outright lies at worst. All of this and one of the other benefits of this plan was double Alaska Airline miles...and to actually get GCI to honor this was like pulling teeth. I wasted hours and hours of my life with customer service to get this to work, and had to follow up with them multiple times to make sure. I felt like I was working as a GCI manager, for free. Their home internet is the best you can get...and pretty much the only thing you can get. It gets 2 stars because they say it's gigabit speeds for download and it actually is gigabit speeds for download. I'd even score it 3-stars but...their upload is abysmal. Upload speeds are more than 10X slower than download speeds. Their mobile and their customer service get negative 1,000 stars though, so I feel like 1-star is being generous. read more

Deceptive Practices and Terrible Service. GCI made false promises right from the start. They claimed I'd get 3 free months, but after signing up, I was told I had to pay for the first month before receiving any free service--completely misleading. The incompetence continued when the first technician came out. He said the internet jack in our 2-year-old's room was the only option since the downstairs jack wasn't working. He also insisted I needed HOA approval to run a new line outside. After jumping through those hoops, a second technician came out and said none of that was necessary--the downstairs jack worked fine, and no new line was needed. How does a company not know how to handle basic installations? A few days later, I received an email demanding an extra $47.50 for "time and materials" that were never used. When I called, they gave me some vague explanation about extra charges after the third visit. This is a clear example of GCI nickel-and-diming their customers with hidden fees. The phone rep said they would "try" to get me a refund, but couldn't guarantee it. No accountability at all. To make matters worse, the internet connection itself is awful. My wife attempted to use it for an important Zoom meeting, and it kept cutting out, making it impossible to work. GCI offers terrible service, unreliable products, and operates with unethical, deceptive practices. Avoid this company at all costs. read more

Poor business practices and no care for the community it serves. Has GCI always sent their trucks out at 10pm to work on power poles till 2am or later? It would help a lot if they wouldnt just leave their loud trucks running that constantly rev up on their own. The guy working was alright, he turned off the truck momentarily. He did tell me "I'll probly be leaving soon" an obvious lie. But it wasnt just that he was working all night with his truck running right behind my place. It was that he was on the phone cussing up a storm being as loud as someone would at noon. Called customer service at 630am and made my complaint. Was told it wont happen again and that they would call back with a reason as to why this couldnt wait, and that their technicians dont work later than 7pm? What the Hell was he doing till 2am then? Called back hours later when I didnt hear back amd they literally hung up the phone on me. Terrible company structure and communication. Communication is in the name. I remember the first advertisement I saw of GCI trying to break into the phone market. They stroked our heartstrings with their ads showing the founders driving falling apart vw vans and explained how the phone monopoly, (or more correctly utility) did not allow competition by disallowing a competitor to use the already existing telephone and power poles that we, the people paid to install. Lawsuits resulted in GCI being allowed to use the poles to start a competing business. As a utility owner, I totally supported the result. As a utility member, ( owner) i agreed that the financial barrier to entry, by having to put up your own poles, was eliminating the possibility of competition. The good: GCI built a business based on fantastic customer service. No more long wait times, frustrating bills, rude entitled legacy employees that cant be fired for rudeness. GCI slowly took over by simply being polite and providing good service. The not so good: I gave GCI the benefit of the doubt and gave their cell service a try. After years of frustrating travel, and GCI advertising I had a nation wide plan. My phone regularly didn't ring when someone wanted to call me, even though I had good signal. As it turned out, GCI had technical issues with piggybacking off other companies cell towers ( I called tech) . Ultimately, I gave up on GCI and went ATT. phone rings every time in podunk usa while travelling. Enter internet: Awesome, no complaints. cable rocks. The Awefull GCI is no longer GCI in my opinion. It was purchased by LIBERTY INTERACTIVE. and that is when the great company went into a spiral nosedive. True to corporate takeover, To add rate of return to their investment. GCI wanted to save a buck by getting hard nosed with the cable channels in their negotiating. The rest is history. I hate the YUKON ap. yesterday for the umpteenth time, we could not watch yukon tv. we could stream on every single other streaming ap we had, netflix, hulu, amazon, apple, etc. no glitches. but not YUKON. Why complain, we are just one of thousands who for over a year hasn't had good streaming via the ap. We are slowly weaning ourselves of yukon..... then bye bye. We also put a dish on the roof. And i am on cue to get starlink. Just as soon as this mature, techno challenged , guy can ensure i have a great backup plan for all my wifes viewing pleasure. by by gci. not going to complain. I am just going to leave. 350 month x 12 months x 30 more years = 126,000 customer. Horrendous customer service. Took off from work and waited at home from 0800-1200. No technician showed up. Called GCI and they said a technician came and left a message that the doorbell was broken and they left. Most likely they knocked gently and took off when nobody came running to the door. Called GCI to see what happened. After 1.5 hrs on the phone, being transferred back and forth from customer service to tech support, they can only say sorry we can reschedule to another day where you'll have to be at home for another 4 hour window.
