Let me start by saying that the owner of the account is not writing this - I am his significant other, and he has given me permission to borrow his account. He also went with me to Game Over the visit I'll be writing about, so can verify if there are any questions.
As for the positives - it was the cleanest, most organized, and best stocked I have seen in in the seven or eight years I've been shopping there. The selection was pretty massive and everything was very easy to locate with similar products in the same areas. I had a fun time exploring their fantastic selection!
Also, when I did go to check out, the cashier was very helpful with the questions we asked and offered solutions for things the store could not help us with automatically on that day. He also spoke to us about other games and made short conversation that did not back of the line.
Unfortunately, the list of positive parts of the visit end there.
The customer service was... disappointing. The store was understaffed for a Saturday (two staffers), and they both seemed to be unsure of what tasks they should be doing at any given point. Again, this isn't necessarily their fault. At most points did have someone asking customers how they were doing, which was very nice, but it happened on and off when the staff wasn't entertaining themselves by chatting with customers while they were behind the counter.
The conversations they began having felt very unprofessional, if not downright uncomfortable.
The employee and a customer were talking about a video game where he planned on creating characters for the twin towers and an airplane, and putting them in a romantic relationship. They both went on to laugh about it, which was... weird, considering there were children probably as young as three or four in the store with their parents, and if I was able to hear the conversation from the other side of the store, I'm sure they could, too,
The employee and the customer did mention it was probably inappropriate, but offensive things were funny, so it was okay to be terrible... so the employee took it further, She told a story about being at a bar and seeing a HILARIOUS poster of two lesbians (I think she mentioned it would be funnier if they weren't, but don't quote me on that) dressed as the twin towers making out - to sell alcohol. She tried not to laugh, but how could she not? That stuff was just too funny!
It was... awkward. This is a little personal, but I am queer - a transman; born a woman; identify as a man. That day I was not presenting as male, and I was suddenly a little uncomfortable hearing that. I'm used to conversations like those escalating very quickly, either with racism or transphobia. Luckily, it did not..
That customer eventually left, and the employee went to do something else. The guy on register was very polite, but there was one problem...
My Boyfriend was with me, and though I stood in front of him and was the one handing over the games, the man completely ignored me and looked to my boyfriend. Granted, he is taller, but this continued. Even after my boyfriend told him that he didn't play video games and we were visiting the store for my sake, the man spoke directly to him about the store deals. At some point, the employee did talk to me for about thirty seconds about a game I was purchasing... I didn't talk very much at that point, but it was mostly because he had spoken over me to ask my boyfriend questions every time. In fact, I puled out my wallet and the cashier looked in the other direction to tell my boyfriend the total. It was... disappointing.
I mentioned that I was presenting as a girl, which means I dressed like one and had my hair down the day we visited... I feel like I would've been taken more seriously during check-out if I had chosen to dress as I normally do, and that's very upsetting... on the other hand, I'm not sure there's anything that could have been done to make the other jokes feel more acceptable.
I've never had an experience like this at any of the Game Over locations in the 8 1/2 years of shopping with them. All my previous visits have been fantastic and I'm hoping this is a one-time thing. read more
