This place is seriously awesome! It is extremely well-organized, so you can kind of cruise through the years to get to the gaming generation you're looking for. I personally was on the hunt for ATARI 2600 cartridges, and they had plenty at a decent price (between $2-10). I also saw SEGA Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast games + peripherals/accessories which can be difficult to find anywhere but the internet nowadays. You'll also find Nintendo, Sony Playstation, and Xbox games/accessories. Nothing NEW new, because this is specifically a retro game store, so if you want the newest releases, go to GameStop or something LOL. One of the coolest things about this location is that they have a corner of their store dedicated to a "museum" of consoles, and it's quite impressive! A lot of ooold consoles like ATARI's line-up and lesser-known consoles like Intellivision, Magnavox, etc. Even some Japanese imports. Fun for a stroll down memory lane (if you're old enough) or to learn about the history of video gaming (if you're not, haha)! Another corner of the store actually has a set-up for you to test/demo games! There's a TV with many consoles hooked up to it, and a comfy couch to enjoy too. The employees here are friendly, out-going, ready-to-assist, and decently knowledgeable too. The fellow assisting me kindly cleaned off the contacts on my cartridges before checking out. You can also find old video game manuals/guidebooks here. Besides retro stuff, you can also find a few modern things like plushies, lanyards/hats/wallets, etc. Game Over Videogames is a small chain with multiple locations. One cool policy they have is that if a game turns out to be non-functional, you can bring it back within two weeks to be replaced. This is good news for me, because I tested the 12 ATARI cartridges I got when I got home and one was a dud (not bad, considering their age!). read more

We came in today ( as repeat customers), and had a tremendously uncomfortable experience. I stood at the counter with an employee next to me who didn't even acknowledge I was there or ask if I needed anything. After about 10 minutes, another employee asked me if I was ready to check out. I clarified no, we had questions. Instead of helping us with them, #2 walked away. Finally the owner finished his conversation with the customer ahead of us and informed us the only console he had we were looking for was a limited edition with a sticker set on it. I don't care about that, I just wanted a console And some games. Additionally he told us we would not get the console under a certain budget: we never told him a budget... he assumed we could not afford what we were looking for. It was really disrespectful they were abrasive, dismissive, and I am certain we will not return. We were prepared to spend some cash, and we won't spend another dime At any Game Over location again. For what it's worth we went to a competitor for GA and got everything for about %60 of what Game Over claimed it would cost. What used to be a haven for OG video gamers had become a collectors haven with greatly inflated pricing and questionable service. I would suggest you avoid. read more

This past weekend was actually my 2nd time at this location. The first time was about two weeks ago. We picked up two PS1 games and a memory card for the PS1. They have a huge selection of games and Import games as well as a cool little area of the store where you can see different consoles throughout the years. I love the little display of local Austin artist that sell their art at the store. The reason I give them a 4 star rating is because looking at the responses from the owner, we should have been able to demo the PS1 games. Unfortunately our copy of Rayman would not work which prompted the return to this location. We hoped they could of fixed the issue but even after they were done cleaning the game like we did and tested it on their own playstation, the game sadly didn't work. They do refunds as credit which I didn't mine but I wish they were able to have seen where we could find another copy of Rayman (We live in Houston so they have several of these stores there) They guys were nice and seem apologetic for the fact that our game didn't work but it was so scratched up I wonder who even approved of that trade in the first place. I would still come to this location when I'm in town. We even thought about going to their retro game weekend later in July. read more

It's cool to see so many old video games systems in one place. However the prices here are atrocious. I don't expect deals from a brick and mortar business, but perhaps try not selling used games for more than the new game is available for on Amazon. The disc itself was pristine and the contents (booklet, poster) inside the case were in great condition, and actually included (Looking at you GameStop...) on top of a neat sticker for the company. I hate giving one star reviews, but felt it was necessary in this situation. I was recently in town for a conference and was excited to visit this store due to the high ratings so I could add to my collection. When I entered, the only "help" I received was one of the employees pointing where I could find the Nintendo games I collect. They were all shoved in a glass case, so it was impossible to see their condition. It took me forever to get either employee to acknowledge me to pull a few games I was interested in, and all the ones they pulled out had torn labels, so I wasn't interested. I then noticed they had stacks of games behind them at the counter, so I asked if I could see what they had. I was told I couldn't, because they hadn't been labeled for sale yet. I said I understood, but if I needed any of the games, I would buy them. Very reluctantly, one of the employees let me look. I found one game I needed, and asked the price. I was then told that the game was already in the case, and I needed to buy that one. I explained to the employee that I buy variants, and have the one in the case, but needed this one. He then started arguing with me that it was the exact same game. I've collected for years, so know exactly what I'm talking about, and what I'm looking for, so I just walked out. The employees here were super rude, clearly didn't know about their games, and obviously didn't want my money. I won't be returning. read more

If you are attempting to purchase older games, this is going to be one of your best bets in Austin. They have a wide variety of games, including Japanese imports, for all systems. The downside is that you're going to be paying premium prices for those games because they know you won't be able to find them elsewhere. The staff was jovial and quick to be helpful. Now the bad news: Their buying practices are horrendous. I've never seen a store offer so lowly for games. I took in 8 games, games that are appraised at roughly $110 total used on ebay, offerup, fb marketplace, etc. One of those games was sitting on their shelf for $50. They offered me $25 for all of them or $35 in store credit. I was offered more than that by a pawn shop down the street. If you are trying to unload your games, do it somewhere else because you're not going to get a fair deal from these guys. Tl;dr GREAT store for buyers, horrific store for sellers/traders read more

Hnnnghhhh........ NERDGASM. In another attempt to make my boyfriend like video games (you heard me right, I am a female trying to make my BOYfriend enjoy video games with me. Sometimes life is so unfair.), I dusted off my old N64 only to find I was missing my multi out cord! Too impatient to order one online, I looked on Yelp and found this lovely little store. I called and they told me they had it for ten bucks, a little high but not high enough that I was willing to wait two weeks for one from Amazon. Drove over and since we are both too cheap to own smart phones or have GPS in our car, I called for directions and the worker there was very nice and patient with helping us find the store. They told me they had a buy two get one free deal going on so I decided to take a gander at their N64 selection. At first I was confused by the weird selection (weird as in I didn't recognize half the games), but then saw there were more under the glass case. Here is where they lose a star. I literally made a choking sound when I saw the price of Mario Kart. Forty bucks for Mario Kart 64? Are you for serious? And thirty for Goldeneye? Do people actually buy these? Maybe I should start selling some of my stuff! Besides that, I enjoyed the selection, the little video game 'museum' (a game boy printer?! Why didn't I have one of those?!), and the fact that the staff was friendly and obviously enjoyed gaming. I ended up buying a few little presents for my fellow game nerd friend's graduation party as an afterthought, and probably would have bought the stuffed Cloud had my boyfriend not been rolling his eyes so hard. They were nice enough to just add those purchases on to the cord we had just bought and so the little Mario wristband was free! The first time I came in we got a screwdriver to fix a Virtual Boy, thus guaranteeing my love for this place. They have all sorts of parts, accessories, games, and old systems. It can be a little expensive, but I consider that a convenience charge: being able to caress an old cartridge lovingly is something that Ebay can't offer you. Great selection of gaming apparel, plushes, and other random items. I bought a "T-virus antidote" energy drink once. They recently expanded this location and added a small "console museum" in the back which is totally worth checking out. Sometimes I like to hole up and get my geek on. When I get the urge to sit for 15 hours and munch on chips and soda and revert to times more pimply, I turn to an old friend in video games. The year was 1982, I had lunch money, and the convenience store had Joust. We were destined. I didn't eat many lunches that year. I was hooked. Those games are classics, but at the time, they were new and blew our little minds. Flash forward 27 years... Now we have all these fancy console units that plug right into your TV! I know! I don't have to spend my lunch money anymore! Instead I save my change to buy new console units every couple of years. But I still love some of the games and especially the game play on my "old" X-box. I went to Game Over to get a tactical game, and with a very helpful staff I was able to settle my need for a squad based tactical war game. They let me play through several game intros and shush people and complain that I couldn't hear. I now have a new/old game to play. Full spectrum warrior has been on the console since I bought it. I think you'll find whatever you want here from expired console units and games to video game t-shirts. They have a super groovy museum of console units (a lot of which I'd only seen in catalogs). Some things don't change. I've been a geek for this long, and I'm glad we have a store where we can feel like kids again, and throw around acronyms like KOTOR with authority and talk about that badass Colecovision you had when you were a kid, okay maybe that was just me. Pros: They sell every game system except ps3. Yes, they sell Atari systems, too, but rarely. They have many atari systems that are for display only. They sell so many old games that are in excellent condition. Nice people. Cons: They sell their stuff for too much of money. They buy your game things for too little of money. If you were in Austin, say, a decade ago and played video games, you likely remember Gamefellas. For me, it was this treasure trove of the cool and obscure from Japan. I had a chipped Playstation that could play Japanese games and, if I wanted something imported, they were my go to guys. Well, the internet is here now, and Gamefellas isn't quite the same place it used to be, so I'm hereby passing the "I'm looking for a hard to find video game" torch officially over to Game Over on Anderson Lane. I actually live closer to their South location, and have been there a number of times, but prefer this location more since A) they have a pretty awesome game museum and B) if you are looking for imported games, this is the best option in town. In addition to that, though, I found the staff to be extremely friendly and willing to let me try before I buy. Try that at your local Gamestop! Their prices are more than what you would pay for something off of ebay but you can actually take it home that day and see the quality before you buy it. Need a game? they probably have it. Everybody here will treat you like a human being and not just a customer. Stores are clean, stock is varied and the museum in the North Austin location is a sight to behold. I think it's hilarious that people fault this company for low trade in value or high prices. In comparison to, say, Gamefellas, their buy / trade value is very similar. Yes, you can buy / sell on ebay and probably make more back, but then after the 10% sellers fee, shipping the merch, and dealing with scams or misrepresentations, I'd MUCH RATHER support a local business with ETHICAL and GENUINE customer service. read more

You graciously helped me rediscover and rekindle my inner super Nintendo child with your cynical yet playful banter and self-deprecating sense of humor (special thanks and a shout out to Davi, the super-cool game maestro who knocked 20% off my loot including a super Nintendo, a sweet personalized controller, and phenomenal games like The Lion King, Donkey Kong, Super Mario All Stars, Aladdin and Zelda!) The supporting cast / staffers were all hella cool / laid back and informative without being annoying elitist gamers....they were pure at heart and in awe of gaming, and I definitely felt the love. That and the store has a "museum" dedicated to game packaging, paintings paying homage to Street Fighter, as well as a shrine to The Wizard (featuring THE power glove and Fred Savage's autograph...since he played videogames for a total of 6 minutes in the movie...) They also have a power pad, Ms. Pac Man and a sofa for those overwhelmed by the presence of such awesomeness in need of a nap. Annnd of course they allow you test any system/game and play your little heart out before you buy. Granted, some of the games are pricey (ranging from $15-50), however, the customer service, integrity, return policy and satisfaction you get from reliving the carefree afternoons of your childhood are well worth it. read more

I've been to a lot (probably all) of the used game stores in Austin, and there are some great ones in the bunch, but Game Over is the best of them. The inventory is the biggest in town with some rarities passing through every now and then. It's not just major platforms, either - I've seen a respectable selection for Neo Geo Pocket Color, Sega CD, even some Jaguar games. They never have everything, but neither does anyone else. The prices are pretty comparable to other used game stores in Austin, and there's always some sort of special for e-mail list subscribers that makes them even better, so if you wait for a special, you'll feel like you're getting a good deal. Game Over has a couple of little things that set it apart, too. First is a museum area which is neat the first time you tour it. There's a lot of hardware in there that I'd never seen before, and I played a lot of video games back in the day. The other thing they have that I am not aware of other used game stores having is the artist consignment area, which has some creative pieces of art for sale (along with some not-so-creative pieces) that look great in your gaming area. More than anything, though, they know how to treat their customers right. There's great service at the register, and someone's always there to help you find something. Usually they make the offer before I even have to ask. I notice that they do this for everyone who walks through the door. I've never had to return anything I've gotten from them, but I have no reason to believe they wouldn't honor their return policy, which seems pretty reasonable. When I'm looking for retro games or hardware, I always go to Game Over first because I expect the best service and a good price. Even if you're closer to another store, it's worth a trip. I've gotta say that I am floored by the customer service at game over. I had purchased some hardware from game over a while back that failed almost immediately. I had a(apparently former) manager rudely explain that it wasn't their problem. Fast forward to today, I went in for some unrelated stuff and mentioned it. The current manager was appalled by my previous experience and made it right long after it was their problem. They have converted me from a cautious customer to one who knows they stand by what they sell. Earning back the trust of a customer is hard to do. Well done. read more

A while ago (a year or so) I went to trade in a bunch of games, mostly PS2/PS1 but I had a brand new copy (maybe a week and half old) of Final Fantasy: Dissidia to trade in, too. Btw, I hated the game, definitely not worth pre-order sale of $50. Anyways, when I went to trade it in, he only offered me FIVE DOLLARS. So, I went to Gamestop instead, and got $25 back for it. So, even though I had one bad experience, I can't blame 'em. They're a small company and giving someone money for a game that probably won't get sold (they don't have a huge PSP selection...) doesn't seem right. I went into the location in Round Rock Texas. A man named Stewart was EXTREMELY rude. I had the systems that I wanted to be traded in. He said no, we don't have money in the store for this big trade. I told him I wanted trade credit (for a game that I have been wanting) He told me no, he is not going to waste his time testing the systems because he KNOWS I want cash. I do not need or want cash. He was so disrespectful. This is the 2nd he I have seen him be rude when it comes to people doing trade ins. He seems extremely bothered by them. As far as the store and staff go, things are great! The good people at Game Over are... pretty much the exact people you'd trust to run a retro videogame store. One had a one-up mushroom shirt and another has a triforce tattoo. So, good. What stopped me from giving this place a 5 stars is that, for seventeen games, I only received an offer for $30 in-store-credit or $15 cash. So, unless you've got some sort of rare and exotic gaming-legend for Atari, don't expect a huge payoff. All in all, I wasn't thrilled with the trade-in credit I received, but as far a store for retro videogames goes, I couldn't imagine a better joint than Game Over Videogames. read more

They are always super helpful in helping me find what I want, and if something goes wrong, making it right.
