I've heard a lot of buzz about this place from friends, so I decided to give it a try. I came here on a Thursday night and ordered the twice cooked pork belly and spinach w/ garlic to go. I came around an hour before closing, and most of the tables were empty. As such, I was able to get helped immediately. They had my takeout order ready within 15 minutes. In total, my two dishes cost me $30, which surprised me when I paid. I thought that they must be giving me a TON of food. Once I saw what I had ordered, I was a little disappointed. The pork belly dish didn't contain as much pork as the versions I've tried at other restaurants, and there was about enough of the dish for 2 meals. On the other hand, they gave me a good amount of spinach - enough for probably a side dish for 3-4 meals. So the value was decent overall, nothing amazing. The pork belly was a bit overcooked, but flavor-wise, pretty good. It, along with the veggies, soaked up the chili sauce beautifully, so each bite had the perfect amount of heat. It's not a spicy dish at all, which is great for me since I can't handle spice very well. The spinach lacked a strong garlic flavor, although you can clearly see bits of garlic on the spinach. I would've preferred more of a punch from the garlic. This restaurant is located in the Safeway plaza, so there's ample parking, although I'm sure parking is a pain during normal daylight hours. Maybe I didn't get the right dish? I love twice cooked pork belly, but maybe if I come back, I'll try something else. This place used to be one of my favorites before covid. Now I understand that things are getting expensive, increase prices is fine, but cutting corners in every dish is unacceptable. I paid over $20 for soft tofu and pork tripe while basically I only got a bowl of tofu with tiny cut up trip pieces. The mooshu dishes mainly have cabbages which is the cheapest ingredient. Half a duck is pretty much just a quarter duck with no leg pieces. I feel so ripped off. read more

Frying Fish is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants on the Eastside. My family comes here every time they're in town. Their Fei-Teng water-boiled fish (沸騰水煮魚) is wonderfully numbing and spicy. The fish hold their shape well and have a slight sweetness to them. Be sure to get the Fei-Teng version; the normal water-boiled fish is smaller and not as good. We always get some side dishes of pig ear and bamboo shoots. They are well-seasoned and taste as good as the ones in China. read more

At Frying Fish, I can get either too much or too little. Getting what's "just right" is a challenge here, especially since most of the menu items are a la carte. When I come here, I'm basically restricted to the rice and noodle options, which is a shame because I'd like to be able to try more food here while just coming by myself. The house special fried rice and fried noodles they have here are delicious, although I'm guessing they're over 1000 calories each and not meant to be eaten as single meals. Their noodle soups are a little more reasonable, although they're generally too small to make me full. Now I could order two of them; this is what I mean by too much or too little. The staff here appear to give me attitude. Either that or they just hate me. They bitch me out for coming at 3:00 PM, at which time they're still open, but the chefs are taking their own lunch breaks. I've also had one of them remark on how poor my Mandarin Chinese is, which is interesting since they won't speak to me in English. Absolutely NOT!!! Before leaving a review I ordered from this restaurant twice. Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke . . . the second time was 6 months after my initial visit. As others have shared prices are reasonable for the area. The space in the restaurant is large busy and lively. Customers included couples, lots of groups and a few take out patrons waiting as well. The restaurant is in a retail area so parking is plentiful. We were able to order quickly, and the food was ready in 15-20 minutes. However unfortunately both times the food tasted off. I hesitate only briefly to describe it as not good [to me]. I really tried. Twice!! Both times I ordered in the evening and my order included the Green Onion Pancakes, Vegetable Egg Rolls, Spicy Chicken Wings Sichuan Style, General Tso's Chicken and Broccoli Beef. Both times the food tasted like old oil, and very little seasoning and the dishes just lacked specific flavor. For example the beef didn't taste like anything let along beef. The General Tso's Chicken and the Broccoli Beef were both extremely salty. I ended up rinsing the beef dish and that helped significantly. The Seattle area does not have a lot of great food. sorry folks, it's just the truth. if Vancouver is a 10 out of 10, LA is a 10 out of 10, SF/Bay Area is a 8.5 out of 10, then Seattle would get a 5.5 (that's with an added .5 as I'm feeling generous). That said, I've found very good certain niche cuisines in the area. Sichuan is one of those, and it is on point! Frying Fish has relatively authentic Sichuan cuisine. The most important element is the szechwan/sichuan peppercorn. If I can't taste the "ma" (numbing sensation), then it's just not right. I usually get the chong qing chicken, the water-cooked fish or water-cooked lamb/beef, and something else. Those first 2 I consider the quintessential Sichuan dishes. they are both prepared well here. It doesn't compare to China, but then again, this is far better than the typical sichuan restaurant in the US. If I had to complain about one thing, it's the consistency. One time I came here, and I tasted almost no "ma" numbing flavor in my food. I suspect it was because I came with 2 white folk. c'mon! i'm yellow like an egg yolk. give me the good stuff. read more

I have been going to Best Wok or Szechuan Chef for Chinese food for the past few years, but I now have a new favorite. The adjectives I think of when eating and looking at this food is "gourmet" "boutique" and "homemade". The portions are slightly smaller, but the quality is better than most every Chinese I've been to. Like for example, the chicken and broccoli has thin slivers of chicken instead of huge fatty chunks you get at most joints, and the sauce is very subtle and tastes homemade. The food doesn't have much garlic which I like and it just feels presentation and quality is more important than quantity. Which is the right way to do it. Thanks Frying Fish. My family has consistently gone to this restaurant for the past two years and although the quality level has slightly declined over time, I would say that it is still a restaurant that I will continue to dine at for future meals. Over the years my family has filtered down the menu, to select our favorite dishes and now order the particular dishes every time we go. For one, we order the dry fried chicken which my children love to eat. When we first ate at the restaurant the chicken served was addictive as each bite was perfectly battered for the most satisfying crunch. However, recently they have become more soggy than crispy but nonetheless it's fried chicken and the flavor still remains delicious. We also order the diced boiled fish with pickled pepper. The fish has the most light, fluffy texture and never tastes too fishy. It's just tasty fillets of fish that even my seafood hating daughter enjoys eating. Our last favorite dish are the dou miao which is essentially stir fried greens with garlic and oil, and when that dish is placed on our table it disappears in seconds. Frying Fish has somehow made my children love to eat vegetables. Overall, the service is good, the price is affordable, and the taste is always above par. We chose this restaurant because the decor is nice, clean, and bright. Additionally there were a decent amount of people in the restaurant. However, any hopes for a nice outing with my date were quickly ruined by the food quality. I ordered the spicy lamb with "gravy". Upon receiving my dish I was shocked by the amount of OIL my dish was soaked in. The lamb was drenched, disgustingly SWIMMING IN OIL. It's definitely a place with a nice ambiance that serves a unique type of cuisine. Whole roasted fish in a Sichuan sauce has been a big thing in China for the last five years, and while this place isn't that great in comparison, it's certainly serviceable and I liked it! It's a whole fish that's been roasted so it's very crispy and has a spicy bean sauce all over it. It's salty and oily, sure, but this isn't food that you eat all the time. In China, it does come with more veggies and even some meats, and that's the big component of the meal I like so I'm disappointed to see that it was just a light accompaniment of lotus root and celery. We also ordered corn with pine nuts and cumin lamb, both good. The only read disappointment was the candied sweet potato-the water served with is supposed to be icy and enough to shock the caramel into hardening immediately. This wasn't cold by any means so we weren't able to eat it the way it was intended. Potatoes were cooked perfectly though. Oh a different note, the parking lot out there is like a freaking luxury car showcase.
