    Lemongrass pork bowl
    Ray L.

Probably not the most authentic Vietnamese Cuisine that I have ever tried. Nevertheless, when it comes to fresh ingredients and tasty food- this restaurant hits the mark. I chose the honey chicken fresh-roll sandwich that came standard with jalapeños, cilantro, cucumbers, and pickled carrots. You also get a side of namnam sauce on the side which has a subtle spicy kick to it. This sandwich was delicious and priced at just under $10.00. My son who follows a gluten-free diet chose the fresh-roll bowl with lemongrass pork. The bowl arrived with the same ingredients as my sandwich - plus onions, purple cabbage and broccolini. I was able to sneak a bite of his bowl and it was delicious. I will give this place a solid 4 stars. The ordering system is all done through a self service electronic touch pad so you won't be able to ask the employees any questions regarding the menu. However , there is a handy chart near the ordering station that covers all the dietary facts about their food in case you have food allergies. My son and I found this extremely helpful. I will be back, and I can't wait to try other menu items!

I'm giving this place a solid 4.3 stars for quality of food and price. I'm definitely coming back. Price -FAIR. The service is amazing. Let's give it to the people preparing these good eats. Shout out to you guys! My mini bahn sandwich was perfect just the right amount of ingredients, the cilantro wasn't over powering the taste. Ratio meat to veggies, not skimpy and done the right way! I also got 1 veggie and 1 chicken roll. I would say two rolls is plenty and adding a mini sandwich is affordable. If you're looking to change up your tastebuds. This is a gem. Like the reviewer before me. Don't sleep on this place. I hope they continue consistency in preparing their meals.

Best snack food around berkekey when you need a quick bite or on the move while studying. Usually service is quite fast and the workers are friendly. Not a lot of space inside but very well lit and good seating. Usually a takeaway spot for me but great portions.

I love Freshroll! I mainly get their chicken rolls and I love their original sauce and peanut sauce. The little crunchy bits they put in the roll really make it so much better than a regular roll. Definitely check this place out and 2 rolls is enough to fell full and satisfied.

Would I consider this the most authentic place? ...not particularly Does it hit the spot when I want something on the lighter and healthier side? Sure Would I come back again - especially when I'm with a group of friends for a snackpass party deal? ...Absolutely! I finally tried out freshroll and got the vermicelli noodle bowl with lemongrass pork. The noodles were a bit thicker than I anticipated. I also requested for the NamNam sauce on the side. Next time, I will request the sauce mixed in because the sauce container wasn't even to coat all the food....which means that the portion size was a lot more than I was expecting! I also really liked the pork...very flavorful and not dried out. I'm not sure if I would go for that sauce again though. It was too mayo-heavy for me. But overall, I really enjoyed this meal and would probably get the same thing again. It was actually so much food that it served as two meals for me! My friend got a new item on the menu: garlic noodle with chicken. She wasn't the most impressed with the chicken and said it was just okay.

I placed an order through grubhub for two tofu spring rolls because I had a $5 off gift card. The order was completed pretty quickly (within 15 minutes). I waited for my order inside the establishment which consisted of a few ordering screens and some tables and chairs. It wasn't too busy when I went, but there was some waiting involved. The spring rolls themselves were good. The veggies tastes fresh and the tofu was flavorful. I wish they had some type of fresh herbs inside cause it would make them better. The nam nam sauce is soooo yummy and compliments the rolls nicely. I do think that they are pretty expensive at $5 a piece and probably won't go out of my way to stop by here again for this reason. I would recommend this place but again just wish it was a bit cheaper!

Now this is the kind of aïoli I like. Just a little bit spicy and sweet. The honey chicken was good and as a gluten-free person I really appreciate the rice noodles. The broccolini was tasty and so was the cucumber. The purple cabbage was little dry, but that was really my only complaint. There are just three tables in the place and you order from a touchpad. I would definitely come back if I was in the area.

Updating my 2 year old review LOL. Tried Freshroll for the first time my freshman year at Cal, and it has since become a regular choice for me when I need a quick and convenient meal. You can't go wrong with any of the offerings here! They mainly have bowls, sandwiches and spring rolls, and a variety of proteins and (delicious) flavors so you can switch it up. It's convenient to order on Snackpass, and unlike a lot of other places that offer a measly side or drink for racking up points, you actually get a good reward here--12 points gets you a whole sandwich. Cheap, convenient, and delicious--one of my go to spots on south side.

Quick refreshing healthy meal! I finally tried fresh roll after hearing mixed reviews about it. I ordered the Freshroll Bowl with vermicelli noodles, roasted chicken, and peanut sauce (on the side). The peanut sauce is very saucy, I'd recommend only adding 1/2 of the sauce and trying it. I also love that Freshroll offers great Snackpass deals. To my understanding, the bowls and spring rolls are what Freshroll does best. I hope to try their banh mi and other items on the menu.

Was craving a salad and decided to look some places up on Yelp. This place popped up and looked pretty good. You pick the flavors you want, pick your base, protein, and sauce. Or you can make it yourself with your favorite mix ins. I ordered a Saigon Swag bowl w/mixed greens, honey soy chicken, and NamNam sauce. The bowl came with broccolini, fried garlic, pickled daikon/carrots, jalepenos, red onions, cilantro, and cucumbers. Basically everything that would be included in a traditional banh mi. The ingredients tasted fresh and the Nam Nam sauce went well with the salad and other ingredients. I had them add the sauce into the bowl instead of on the side. It was a very fresh and light lunch and I would definitely go back. Better than a "normal" salad. I also got the mint lychee Jasmine tea. It was refreshing and lightly sweetened. You could taste the tea. Would come back again.

Hi Nathan! The Freshrolls can most certainly be made vegan. Just select Mushrooms as your protein option. The Tofu currently contains honey in the marinade, so if honey is acceptable in your diet then Tofu is also an option. Please let me know…

I have been super excited to try hawking bird, and it did not disappoint. We got the satay chicken salad, curry fried chicken rice bowl, pickles, and the calamansi soda. Satay chicken salad -- very fresh and flavorful. the grilled chicken was very well marinated, and had lots of flavor. It came with a vinaigrette and a yummy peanut dipping sauce on the side. We thought it could use a little more greens, as the portion felt somewhat small. Curry fried chicken bowl -- this was our favorite thing that we got! The curry was flavorful and there was the perfect amount of it over the chicken and rice. There was a healthy portion of fried chicken and rice, which we appreciated. The chicken itself was super crispy and yummy. All of the components went very well together, and we really loved this one! Pickles -- this was just okay to me. the pickled vegetables consisted of assorted veggies including green beans, peppers, and cabbage. The veggies had a slight sweetness to them, but also were spicy! Not my favorite, but still pretty good. Calamansi soda -- honorable mention because I love calamansi and was so excited to see that they had this as an option! If you are a calamansi lover, you definitely enjoy this. it was crisp, refreshing, and had an authentic calamansi flavor. I'd definitely get it again! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal! We thought that the portions were the perfect size for sharing, which we loved. Next time, I'd definitely get the curry rice bowl again because it was so good! The decor was super cute, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If you are craving a chicken dish, we recommend you check this place out!

The delicious crispy bottom of the pot rice, delectable chicken and shrimp in a delicious sauce. My only complaint would be that there wasn't enough bok choy, I love bok choy! I can't believe Vanessa's has been around for 20 years, and I just tried it for the first time. I recently moved back to Albany, right off Solano, from North Berkeley, and decided to try all the restaurants I haven't yet tried. In a word, fabulous. The food, vibe, and staff are all amazing. I was there on a Wednesday night (Wine Wednesday, 1/2 off bottles of wine), by myself, about 45 minutes before closing. It was a slow night, with about 6 people at the bar and maybe 2 or 3 other active tables in the dining area. They have a wonderful vibe in there; every member of the staff was über-friendly, accommodating, and patient. I ordered a house-made lemonade, which the bartender brought to me himself with a big smile as I perused the menu. I purposely ordered extra food since my entire kitchen was still in boxes, and I only had access to my new microwave. I had mentioned to my server that I had just moved, and during my meal, Vi (co-owner and daughter of THE Vanessa) came to introduce herself and welcome me to the neighborhood, a very nice gesture, and one that brought me back with friends two nights later, with Vi remembering my name. Anyway, on to the food. French onion soup; nice, was it the best FOS I've had? No, but still solid. The crouton was more like a slice of baguette. Salt & Pepper Calamari; really good! An amazingly light and crispy batter encased calamari strips, loaded with flavor, super tender, delicious dipping sauce, and a very large portion for a "small plate". Vanessa's Spicy Sautéed Lemongrass with garlic, onions & green beans topped with roasted peanuts: I chose chicken for my protein. Again, the meat was extremely tender, the dish very flavorful, much more lemongrass-forward than at other restaurants, which I loved. The staff and Vi kept insisting I take my time and not to worry about the 8:30 closing time. People were still lingering in the bar area, and I did as I was told, relaxed, and enjoyed my meal (thoroughly). Bottom line, I loved it and plan on being a regular fixture :)

This was 6 pm on a Tuesday, so not that busy. 2. My friend ordered a filet mignon- medium well - it came back rare. We even had a discussion about it with the waiter. The waiter forgot about us after dropping off the food, so it took a very long time to get his attention and get the order corrected. 3. I ordered a lychee cocktail and it tasted like dirty water! It was terrible so I returned in and got a margarita instead. That too, was very sub par and made me immediately sleepy. This usually means they use really low-quality alcohol and ingredients. 4. I ordered Pad Thai- how can that go wrong? Well it did. It just had no flavor and was rather bland. I've never had bland Pad Thai, but now I can cross that off my bucket list. I actually had to ask for soy sauce to give it some kind of flavor, and still it was meh. In conclusion: Vanessa's Bistro and I will never cross paths again. I prefer to spend my hard-earned money elsewhere.

We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!!
