    Safe for celiacs?

Hi Fatima! We have a significant number of gluten-free options, as we use gluten-free soy sauce and gluten-free oyster sauce in our marinades and sauces. As such, our bases (including noodles and rice paper) and proteins are gluten-free in terms of…

Does your fish sauce contain any shellfish?

Hi Jose! The fish sauce does not contain shellfish - we are a shellfish-free restaurant!

Is the vegan tofu option also gluten-free? Are any of the sauces both vegan and gluten-free?

Hello! Yes the vegan tofu option is gluten-free. The Citrus Ginger Sauce is both vegan and gluten-free. The Peanut sauce is vegan, but contains hoisin sauce as an ingredient. We are unsure of whether the hoisin sauce is gluten-free so do not label…

    Are the sauces vegan?

Hi Gwen! The Peanut Sauce and Citrus Ginger sauce are both vegan, however the NamNam Sauce (contains egg) and Vietnamese Vinaigrette (contains fish) are not. Hope this helps!

Can the spring rolls be made vegan?

Hi Nathan! The Freshrolls can most certainly be made vegan. Just select Mushrooms as your protein option. The Tofu currently contains honey in the marinade, so if honey is acceptable in your diet then Tofu is also an option. Please let me know…

I have been super excited to try hawking bird, and it did not disappoint. We got the satay chicken salad, curry fried chicken rice bowl, pickles, and the calamansi soda. Satay chicken salad -- very fresh and flavorful. the grilled chicken was very well marinated, and had lots of flavor. It came with a vinaigrette and a yummy peanut dipping sauce on the side. We thought it could use a little more greens, as the portion felt somewhat small. Curry fried chicken bowl -- this was our favorite thing that we got! The curry was flavorful and there was the perfect amount of it over the chicken and rice. There was a healthy portion of fried chicken and rice, which we appreciated. The chicken itself was super crispy and yummy. All of the components went very well together, and we really loved this one! Pickles -- this was just okay to me. the pickled vegetables consisted of assorted veggies including green beans, peppers, and cabbage. The veggies had a slight sweetness to them, but also were spicy! Not my favorite, but still pretty good. Calamansi soda -- honorable mention because I love calamansi and was so excited to see that they had this as an option! If you are a calamansi lover, you definitely enjoy this. it was crisp, refreshing, and had an authentic calamansi flavor. I'd definitely get it again! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal! We thought that the portions were the perfect size for sharing, which we loved. Next time, I'd definitely get the curry rice bowl again because it was so good! The decor was super cute, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If you are craving a chicken dish, we recommend you check this place out!

Order at the counter and they bring food to you. - kmg: The sauce did the khao mun gai did not taste as flavorful (less funky, more watered down). - green beans: similar to above, more watered down flavors. Was expecting more funk and spice and sweetness like what they used to serve. - tater tots: crunchy with a hint of tom yum (I think) seasoning - Lao sausage: a tad dry, again would want more flavorful seasoning Slow service (took 20 mins for us to get our soup broth that came with our rice dish, and prob 30 mins for us to get a side of pickles). Ambiance as loud and echoey and it sounded like a large fan or blender was going for a long time (which was still decently loud despite us sitting furthest end from the kitchen).

Update: I tried two more items last night: Duck confit bao and Clay pot. Both were very good. The…read morebao were soft, flavorful and had a nice combination of duck and (enoki?) mushrooms among other things. The clay pot rice was great! The delicious crispy bottom of the pot rice, delectable chicken and shrimp in a delicious sauce. My only complaint would be that there wasn't enough bok choy, I love bok choy! I can't believe Vanessa's has been around for 20 years, and I just tried it for the first time. I recently moved back to Albany, right off Solano, from North Berkeley, and decided to try all the restaurants I haven't yet tried. In a word, fabulous. The food, vibe, and staff are all amazing. I was there on a Wednesday night (Wine Wednesday, 1/2 off bottles of wine), by myself, about 45 minutes before closing. It was a slow night, with about 6 people at the bar and maybe 2 or 3 other active tables in the dining area. They have a wonderful vibe in there; every member of the staff was über-friendly, accommodating, and patient. I ordered a house-made lemonade, which the bartender brought to me himself with a big smile as I perused the menu. I purposely ordered extra food since my entire kitchen was still in boxes, and I only had access to my new microwave. I had mentioned to my server that I had just moved, and during my meal, Vi (co-owner and daughter of THE Vanessa) came to introduce herself and welcome me to the neighborhood, a very nice gesture, and one that brought me back with friends two nights later, with Vi remembering my name. Anyway, on to the food. French onion soup; nice, was it the best FOS I've had? No, but still solid. The crouton was more like a slice of baguette. Salt & Pepper Calamari; really good! An amazingly light and crispy batter encased calamari strips, loaded with flavor, super tender, delicious dipping sauce, and a very large portion for a "small plate". Vanessa's Spicy Sautéed Lemongrass with garlic, onions & green beans topped with roasted peanuts: I chose chicken for my protein. Again, the meat was extremely tender, the dish very flavorful, much more lemongrass-forward than at other restaurants, which I loved. The staff and Vi kept insisting I take my time and not to worry about the 8:30 closing time. People were still lingering in the bar area, and I did as I was told, relaxed, and enjoyed my meal (thoroughly). Bottom line, I loved it and plan on being a regular fixture :)

I read the good reviews of this place so I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. I was…read moredisappointed by the whole experience. 1. The service was poor and the food was "meh." This was 6 pm on a Tuesday, so not that busy. 2. My friend ordered a filet mignon- medium well - it came back rare. We even had a discussion about it with the waiter. The waiter forgot about us after dropping off the food, so it took a very long time to get his attention and get the order corrected. 3. I ordered a lychee cocktail and it tasted like dirty water! It was terrible so I returned in and got a margarita instead. That too, was very sub par and made me immediately sleepy. This usually means they use really low-quality alcohol and ingredients. 4. I ordered Pad Thai- how can that go wrong? Well it did. It just had no flavor and was rather bland. I've never had bland Pad Thai, but now I can cross that off my bucket list. I actually had to ask for soy sauce to give it some kind of flavor, and still it was meh. In conclusion: Vanessa's Bistro and I will never cross paths again. I prefer to spend my hard-earned money elsewhere.

Was in the mood for pho and decided we'd try someplace I haven't been before. I've had enough pho…read morealong the west coast to know what great pho should taste like and I haven't had the best luck in the Bay. So, the verdict? Extremely impressed. This is already on my top five list in a single visit. Went for the basics: beef pho, and salad roll with tofu. I was initially put off by the short menu and few options to add toppings (I didn't see any tendon or tripe for example), and worried it would be too bland or too sweet--but it was not. The broth was deeply flavorful and more savory. Meats were generous and meatballs were exceptional, maybe the best I've had. The basil and sprouts were garden fresh, and unusually, the rice noodles were exceptional, not at all soft or pressed together. I could genuinely taste the love here. It extended to the salad rolls which were generously portioned and used lightly fried tofu which I prefer. One additional note about the broth. It's a richer style than I normally like so I couldn't drink it to the last drop, but I can't fault its great flavor. The service was above average, with a spirited vibe. Loved everything, will be back to try more on the menu.

They've…read moreclearly put more thought into the decor and menu than you typically see at a traditional pho spot. We ordered the beef pho ($20), crispy spring rolls ($11), and beef carpaccio ($18). The pho was solid, with a clear, deeply flavored broth and noodles that were slightly al dente, which I personally enjoyed. That said, for $20, it didn't feel especially memorable. The crispy spring rolls were fine, but I prefer the ones I make at home, so I'd probably skip them next time. I was especially excited to try the Vietnamese beef carpaccio, and the presentation was beautiful. The beef was fresh, evenly sliced, and topped with baby greens, onions, crispy fried onions, and edible flowers. Unfortunately, the sauce leaned far too citrusy for my taste and overpowered the flavors I wanted to come through, such as fish sauce, vinegar, and sugar. I also think a little more fried onion and garlic would have made the dish more flavorful and satisfying. Overall, we had a decent meal with both highlights and misses. They also offer dishes like bánh khọt and bò lúc lắc, which may be worth trying on a future visit.
