FreeUp Storage is a very unethical business and you would do well to find other storage units. Here is what happened to me...
I only needed a few weeks of storage (some of July and a few days into August). The front desk person informed me there is a no-prorate policy, so I would have to pay for two months due to the July-August overlap. Obviously, this is a ridiculous and predatory policy, so I said I was no longer interested and would rent somewhere else. As I was leaving, the front desk person said an exception would be made for me, as long as I payed for one full month. This was acceptable to me, so I took the offer.
Upon ending my 2-3 week lease, I was charged for nearly two months even though FreeUp had told me they would make an exception in my case. When I brought this up to the front desk person, she told me not to worry and that I would be refunded. I was not. I would call back many times throughout August, September, and October to inquire about my refund--every time I was told it was coming. All of these calls are recorded by FreeUp storage, by the way.
Finally I messaged the corporate contact number and let them know my situation. They said that the office manager (they would not provide their name) did not make an exception in my case. So I gave them timestamped calls to prove it! They said they could not find any calls in their system. So I showed them a screenshot to prove it. Eventually, they ended up refunding me only $86 of $301 that was promised.
I am honestly pretty shocked that FreeUp would act so sleazy over a couple hundred dollars, especially when they know they made a promise. If their customer service is this poor over a few hundred dollars, I can't imagine it's very good in other circumstances either.
BTW, the front desk person was very pleasant to work with (I went back and forth with her for months). It's the corporate office that is unethical and hostile. read more
