Frankenstein helped put together my husband's work PC a few years ago, so I knew they were going to do a great job in building my new custom PC. Jonathan was very knowledgeable and recommended I have my PC built by a 3rd party, Build Redux, since they would be able to source computer parts much cheaper and I would save a lot of money. Really appreciated that he had my back on keeping things affordable! He even sat on the phone with me for about 20 minutes and went over all the different options for the processor, memory and storage. He really went above and beyond to make sure I was getting the best PC for my needs at a good price, which was awesome since I'm a small business owner and not super knowledgeable about PC building. I took Jonathan's advice and had the PC built through Build Redux, and then brought it to Frankenstein to make sure everything was correctly installed, properly working, as well as to have the SSD cloned to the new system. I work from home and do the majority of my work on my PC, so I was thrilled when it took them less than 24 hours to finish my ticket! They even made sure my old PC was still useable as a back-up, cleaned all the dust out of it, and replaced the CPU heat sink. Our family had a great experience with Frankenstein in the past and I'm glad to report this time was no different! During COVID my main source of social connection is through online gaming and Discord. So having to bring my computer in for repairs and upgrades is stressful. I accidentally spilled water all over my MacBook and thought it was a lost cause. With little hope, I called up a couple repair shops and most told me they didn't do mac water damage. Fortunately, Frankenstein came to the rescue and took my MacBook in. They were covid conscious; I dropped of my MacBook at a desk outside their door. I have had a very challenging 2023. It has been one of those years where Murphy's Law has been in full effect. My laptop keyboard gave out in me in February. I kept waiting til I had the $$ to fix it. That never happened, so I just decided to bite the bullet and get the repair as I needed it for work. I did a quick google search for laptop repair shops and liked the look of this place. I'm glad I went with them! I dropped off the laptop and was very happy to get a call 3 days later that I could pick it up the next day. Best part- it was just under $200 including tax and fees. I was very happy with the service, communication, and pricing. The real kicker for me was that when I fired it up for the first time in 5 months I went to do the updates it would need, but THEY HAD ALREADY DONE most of the updates for me! I can't say enough good things about this team- helped me out of a bind in a pinch, after closing time on a Friday, no less. For days, I had been stuck in one of those impossible, insane loops with the Microsoft online help site, trying to recover an email/password so I could create a second user login on a shared laptop. There was no apparent option for getting help from a live Chat / person and I'm sure the MS store would refer me back to the useless online help site. I was referred to Frankenstein Computers (cool name, incidentally!) by Discount Electronics. I turned up after 5 when they were closing shop. I was all ready to come back the next day, but Jay kindly offered to see if he could field a quick question. He solved my issue in less than 5 minutes, working around my password issue by setting up a new separate User via the main User in the Admin section, then making sure it worked and I understood what he'd done. As you may tell I am no technophile - this was thankfully a simple fix but I'm so impressed with Jay and his colleague Jon, both very good humored nice guys. My PC could not handle Windows 10. I was overwhelmed by shopping for a new computer. Frankenstein is a few blocks away and their reviews assured me I'd be in capable hands there - whew! On my 1st visit I spoke with a young man who listened carefully, asked a few questions then talked me through what I would need in a new computer. He was blessedly patient and kind with this senior citizen! Health issues intervened in my purchase of a new computer and I'd lost the paper with new computer notes on it. I returned to Frankenstein Computers today and spoke with Ryan. He listened to my situation, kindly and w/o talking down to me. I had trouble explaining the equipment that sat beside my monitor and keyboard. A kind soul in the back overheard me and came out holding one of those "thingies" and asked, "Is it like this?" It was! Ryan and I could proceed & he recommended what I'd need. What a relief! With my written notes this time, I drove straight to Best Buy, told the salesman what I needed and w/ his guidance, narrowed computer options down & picked one. I could not have done this without the great folks @Frankenstein Computers! I'm not sure I can transfer everything from my old PC to the new one. I'll probably pay Frankenstein Computers to do that for me. I'm lucky to know this excellent computer firm is trustworthy and has super nice people too. You can trust them too! I came here with a 13y old Mac which was basically a photo album. I needed to transfer the HD data to a portable one and recycle the obsolete machine. They were confident in saying they could do so but didn't 100% guarantee it. In less than 24h the job was done and ready for pick up! I drove 20min to come here and I'd do it again. When I came in he took one look at the pc and already knew what was wrong with it and wanted to charge me for it. I was charged $60 for him to plug in my CPU power cord in front of me and it took him 1min to do. It took him longer to do the paper work and get my information than to do the actual work on the computer. I don't think it is reasonable to charge $60 for 1min of work or what would have been better would be to just tell me that I missed plugging in my CPU power cord and I would have gladly plugged it in myself. You shouldn't take advantage of your customers. read more

Jonathan Allen -- he's a "Computer Super Star!!!" I brought my vintage 1981 Radio Shack Tandy computer to the Frankenstein computer repair place. (For the correct pronunciation of "Frankenstein" please refer to the Mel Brooks movie "Young Frankenstein....") Well -- the classic Tandy was missing some screws -- and -- it was "acting in a disorderly fashion...." according to my family therapist. Jonathan Allen grabbed that computer by the scruff of the neck -- as if he was hog-tying a Hooligan in Red Dead Redemption 2!!! That rebellious old Randy Tandy submitted -- as if to say, "Papa -- I will behave now...." Well -- Jonathan installed the proper screws and then briskly slapped that old vintage Stephen King scary novel writing machine on the back cover -- and voila! It works!!! Thank you, Jonathan!!! I have a work website that I had neglected to get secured and updated. My wake-up call started with ransom emails demanding bit coin to keep from taking over my website. Of course, I never clicked on anything. But after I ignored the scam, the unrelentless spam started. I rerouted all traffic from my website to my spam folder to disable links and images. But I started to get on edge and overwhelmed with all the junk. I was getting hundreds of emails and it was incredibly time consuming to sift through it all. I didn't even want to log into my site due to fear of some backdoor malware. I am so thankful I reached out to Frankenstein Computers for some help! I had the pleasure of working with Ariel. I have use these guys for several years for various computer maintenance, networking, virus cleanup, etc.... They've always been extremely reliable. I was having a server issue with an older server and brought it by their store. I did not expect for them to do anything other than checked in the server. They took it in back immediately and diagnose the problem quickly. They happened to have the parts in place and swapped it out. I left 20 minutes later with my system operating! They are awesome. While I have always gotten good service, I don't think that the expectation should ever be that you're going to show up and leave 20 minutes later with your problem solved, it was really nice that they identified that this was one of those times and they did it. read more

This place tried to help me, couldn't fix my problem, and wouldn't take my money!! I mean, they honestly tried (I made a booger of a mistake). And they referred me to someplace else that, at tremendous cost, could have helped me. But I was more impressed how they never made me feel stupid, they explained their costs to me very clearly, and then wouldn't charge me. I can't promise you the same experience financially, but I can assure you that they are cool enough to not talk down to you, and, will do what they say they can do. Fantastic service. My PC died on me the night before I brought it into them and they were able to turn around a diagnostic in just a few hours. The technician spoke with me on the phone about what went wrong and had some very helpful recommendations on what parts I should purchase as replacements. Wow! These guys were great! My daughter and I were a little nervous taking her laptop into the shop after a Sprite mishap. Our geeky fam dried it out with rice and got it going again but the wifi didn't work properly. The keyboard was also gunked up from rice and Sprite stickiness. Our resident hardware guy had to fly out to silicon valley this morning, so we decided to risk a lecture and take it in. The tech flipped it over and took a look, found some loose wires and fixed it right there. He recommended a keyboard and we went home with a working computer and a lesson in self suffiency that was painless! Best of all, it was on the house! They had a steady stream of customers and were personable with each one. Everyone was leaving feeling relieved and good about their choice. My laptop, an ACER Aspire, was consistently becoming too hot and then shutting off. The issue was clearly with the battery and the fan, so I bought those two new parts and called Frankenstein. Frankenstein Computers installed the battery and the fan and returned the computer to me. Unfortunately the issue persisted so I called them to see if they could do anything about it. They assured me that my computer was under warranty and they could do some more searching without an additional labor charge. After a few tries they found that the fan I bought was faulty. They bought a new fan and re-installed it, everything worked wonderfully. My computer runs better than it did 6 months ago. They kept me updated throughout the process and I was charged very modestly for the duration of time they had my laptop. Ryan was fantastic and everything was done in a timely manner. I want to note that the owner claims, in his response to my initial review, that they included their labor costs in their initial email to me. I just double-checked our emails back and forth to make sure I didn't miss something and they absolutely did NOT include their labor costs in any of the emails sent to me. This is yet another lie from them. They only included "50.00 + tax" for the cost of the battery itself. Also worth noting that they charged me $60 for this. I'm fairly confident that the tax is not 20%. read more

I was having trouble with my custom built PC posting and booting to Windows -- I brought in the machine and Ariel and Jay couldn't have been more helpful. Jay had the time to take a look at it on the spot and troubleshot it with me until he it posting regularly -- turns out it was a faulty USB cable to the motherboard keeping it from posting! Frankenstein charged me for several hours work for a job that should have taken 10 minutes or less. They fumbled around forever, while thanking me for my patience. They knew they were taking too long but they charged me for every minute anyway. When I complained to Tony (the owner/manager), he got defensive and, while he admitted that it probably should have been a 10-minute job, refused to work with me on the cost. Just a simple meeting me half way would have been a welcome gesture. But instead he and his company charged me for every minute - enough that I could have bought an entirely new computer for what they charged me for a simple networking job. I'm not generally a complainer, but I feel totally screwed by these guys. And Tony's snarky attitude didn't help. read more

UPDATE: My laptop's screen died again, and I was under the assumption that it was the same issue as before. I e-mailed Jonathan to see if I could try a few things before bringing it in. He gave me some steps, and I tried them without success. I brought it in, and he was able to immediately find the issue (different than last year!) and fix it quickly and reapplied cooling paste to make sure my laptop will continue to operate at optimal performance for me. I came into Frankenstein computers with a frozen external hard drive that wouldn't spin. I had talked to Discount Electronics (they don't do data recovery) and about 4-5 specialty data recovery shops in Austin, all of whom were quoting $300-$2000, with most projects landing in the $700-$900 range. Frankenstein said to bring it in and they'd take a look on the spot and at least let me know if it was recoverable by them (for the much more reasonable $150) or if I needed to take it to a data recovery specialist. As soon as I walked in Jay grabbed the drive and took it to the back to examine. When he came back out he said the power supply wasn't connecting properly but he had gotten it to spin using an extra power supply they had on hand, and was able to see the files on the drive. Jay also explained that the hard drive was on the brink of collapse, with a pending sector count of 200. He advised me to get a replacement power supply and rip the data off the failing hard drive asap, both of which I did successfully. He said he didn't feel right charging me for something I could likely resolve myself with a new power supply. Jay probably spent 20-30 minutes examining my equipment and giving me advice, and in the end didn't charge me a dime. I was blown away by the customer service and generosity, and will definitely be back. I'm so glad to know there is a local computer repair place in Austin that I can trust.
