It's a great spot to come to if you really love deep fried food. If not, this may not be the spot for you. They have VERY FEW other options which are healthier, or at the very least, not fried. SO unless you are in the mood for fried catfish or poboys, try elsewhere. However, the food that I have ordered on several different occasions is very yummy! After seeing Flying Fish on 'Fluffy Breaks Even', I enthusiastically recommended to my wife and friends that we eat here on a recent trip to Memphis. I must say that, while the fish was fresh and hot, the breading was a bland as I have ever tasted, and the fries were nothing more than frozen shoestrings. I ordered a side of slaw which was actually the best part of the meal. Considering that the tab for my wife and I was north of $30, it was not a good value at all. If you're not picky about your catfish served with kiddie fries, you'll be okay. But if you value flavor on all sides of your plate, there are better options all around. I just wish I understood why a nationally-televised show centered on food would have chosen such a mediocre place with so many options available to them in a rich, cultural center such as Memphis. read more

The Flying Fish has rapidly become one of my favorite spots for downtown eats on the go. Populated at lunchtime by an assortment of desk-jockeys (myself included), prices are very fair considering the portions and the food is spectacular for those of us who love old school fish-camp style eateries. The only thing missing is a whole in the middle of the table for your shucks! In any case, while many seem to prefer the fish offerings, I'm always the most pleased with their oysters--your choice of fried or raw--which despite long summer months are always fresh tasting and plentiful. Their cocktail sauce is a bit anemic, but the added sauces and spices provided at the table more than make up for this (including horseradish for when a kick in the pants is required). The decor is kitschy, the music is always blues played over a surprisingly good-for-a-fish-place sound system, and the pictures of local boosters give the sense of a restaurant appreciated by the community. Who wouldn't appreciate them at this price point? Very easy to get out of the door at lunch for $7 or under. While driving out of your way is less appealing, for people visiting or working downtown it's an excellent option for the times when you don't want another greasy hamburger or plate of sauce-drowned pork. read more

Flying Fish... a 10 step instructional review: 1) Go in on a Sunday when it's not too hot outside... this way you can take advantage of the $0.50 oyster special (Sundays only), and the open to the street bar style seats for the excellent people watching that Memphis offers. 2) Walk straight up through the doors and get into line. 3) Look up at the menu. It's difficult to figure out what you want, since it's all hand written and the layout is a bit strange. Don't worry, just get a dozen oysters (remember, that's why you're here on Sunday), and get the fish tacos with tilapia. 4) Grab a bucket from on top of the beer coolers. Fill with your choice of beers. 5) Walk up to the guy, taking orders. Hand him your beer bucket... he'll put ice in it. Tell him about the dozen oysters and the fish tacos with tilapia and say "Make it snappy." (Trust me, that's the key... they put a bit of spicy sauce on the fish). 6) Listen to the guy yell "Make it snappy!" to the kitchen, and listen to them yell it back "Snappy!" 7) Grab your 'pager' and head out to the bar seating that overlooks the road. Drink a beer. Enjoy the ridiculousness of the fish on the wall and the people on the street. 8) Pager goes off, go get your food, bring it back. 9) Eat. 10) Be happy. read more

I was visiting Memphis for a wedding celebration and my Lyft driver suggested this spot. Best recommendation ever. Nothing fancy when you enter but the great food did the speaking so there is no need for ambiance. Grilled trout excellent, fried catfish outstanding...not greasy. Absolutely loved the grilled vegetables. Wow! I was only in town a few days and went twice, I grabbed some fish to go as I was heading to the airport. The face of the establishment was a wonderful gentleman who made ordering easy and he was incredibly patient. I've only been here four or five times but we have tried a lot of things on the menu. We have come down a few times on the .50c oyster night also. Service has been fine. 3.7 stars. You would think that fried food is a no brainer. Batter up anything and fry it, and you got a filling meal. Too many times in the past I've received grease sodden items on my plate that were barely palatable. Here at flying fish that is not the case. The thing to get here (and it seems a lot of fellow yelpers agree) is the fried catfish. My husband is addicted to this stuff. He will not order the fillets though. It must the the whole 1lb fish. I like the way that they cut it up so that there is maximal fried surface. The cornmeal coating is perfect and the texture is crispy on the outside and done so that there is not a ton of grease soaked into the fish. We also ordered rice and beans, fried oysters, corn on the cob....all these were average compared to the catfish. I've had better fried food, but not often. Not sure what is going on here.... one of our most favorite places on the planet...drove over (2 hrs each way!) just to eat here and wow...what a change. Prices are up, 16.99 for peel and eat shrimp. My corn on the cob was shriveled up and STONE cold. I had to throw out 9 shrimp because they were slippery, smelly and BAD! That was 30% of the total so makes it REALLY expensive. The two boiled potatoes were cold and hard. If this had been our only visit I would never return. As it is I will have to be in Memphis to stop again as I would not be able to talk anyone into making a spice latte trip after this catastrophic dining experience.. hope this was an anomaly. read more

I didn't write much in my last review and since then I've been to Flying Fish a few more times. The red beans and rice seriously lost their luster I don't know what happened they're just not as good unfortunately. I was never that big on their crab legs, I think Red Lobster's taste much better, and after our last trip I am done. My platter of crab legs came out with practically nothing on it! My dad took it up to the counter to question it and they offered to make some more which was nice of them but then I start to eat the crab legs that I have. They are so small that there is practically no meat in them! As I finished the little amount that I had I began to wonder if they were actually making more so my dad went to check and came back with a platter that actually had more legs on it than my first one!! I mean seriously I wish I had taken a picture, it was ridiculous. Oh well I ate all the legs on the second platter and was still hungry. I don't know where they find such small legs with no meat. It will be a long time (if ever) before we go back because there are plenty of other restaurants to try. read more
