Cajun Shrimp Fried Rice with Vegetables
    Allison S.

We went to the Saltwater Crab for the first time on Friday night! It was packed with people which always is a great start for trying somewhere new! We were seated on the outdoor patio, right away our server came and took our order. We started with the edamame, which was traditional but inexpensive. The shaggy dog sushi was fantastic; I definitely would get this roll again. I heard great things about the cajun fried rice, but to me this dish didn't stray far from traditional fried rice flavor wise. My least favorite part of the whole experience was how loud the restaurant was. If you are looking more for a party scene or going out for drinks, this is your place! Next time I will be getting sushi to go!

They have a very extensive menu. I went with a large party of 20 and our server was great! All of the orders were perfectly presented. The food was tasty too. I ordered the gumbo (not much seafood in it but tasty), the Los Angeles sushi roll, and catfish bites, all delicious. My daughter also got the dumplings and #1 boil bag mild and literally demolished it. It is a huge place so there is plenty of space and parking is around. Only downside was that the party space was in a sunroom and it was cold.

We dined in again and had an event better time that the last. I absolutely couldnt wait to enjoy the CajunSeafood rice. I also ordered 2 spicy crafish rolls (which include a soup and salad) along with the fabulous 4 for $10 poinsettas. The rice was 10/10. Large portion size, seasoned well and perfectly cooked seafood. The poinsettas will get you right everytime. Brittany Z was an amazing hostess for our party. We enjoyed the back enclosed patio area which was warm and spacious for our group.

Customer service is great, I recall being greeted by almost every staff person I passed walking to my table which is rare. The environment felt familiar and inviting which is important! The food was super tasty and came out quickly, the Cajun seafood rice with veggies was flavorful, I would order again and sushi rolls, I had the 4 for $10 poinsettias and the bartender didn't miss!! The server for our table of 9 was patient and attentive even when the restaurant became busy. I can't wait to go back and try the seafood boils.

My husband wanted to try this restaurant because it had gotten good reviews for its Cajun fried rice. It was super busy when we got there so we were placed on a waiting list. No problem! There was a crawfish festival going on right outside its doors so I checked out some vendors while waiting. When our number was called I headed back to what was a literal zoo! It was so noisy that I couldn't converse with my husband. One customer (hyena) was talking and laughing so loudly from the back bar area that her voice carried to the front and startled me every time she opened her mouth. Just uncouth and inconsiderate. I had seen lots of people outside eating boiled crawfish that was pouring out of the styrofoam containers but my husband suggested I get it here. It was on the menu for $9/ 1/2lb and $15/lb but with a minimum pound order, and today bc they were competing with the festival, they upped the price to $20/lb. I had never had whole crawfish but it looked delicious from the outside vendors. I thought my husband was splitting the order with me but he ordered the Cajun fried rice and a grouper fish sandwich. He also ordered the soft shell crab appetizer. It was okay. It was 1 crab, maybe. I was so disappointed when my food arrived in a bag, especially then learning how to twist off the head of the crawfish and discovering there isn't much to them, so in essence it's a pound of useless head. I also thought the crawfish was bland and not worth the effort. Not the restaurant's fault that I didn't know better. My husband said the grouper upset his stomach and tasted like an oil sandwich. To make matters worse, we sat next to a table of 4 young people cursing and on a video call, 1 who made me hyper alert about my surroundings. I was just turned off by the environment and couldn't enjoy my food so I took the entire meal with us so my husband could eat it later. $80 bill for a meal we didn't enjoy and a loud and uncouth environment.

We were seated swiftly, and our server, Brittany, was nice! However, our food was just okay. We enjoyed the King sushi roll, which was fresh and tasty, but the Cajun chicken fried rice with veggies was not good. The rice tasted steamed and tasteless. To the rice, we added vegetables, Cajun garlic butter, and seafood sauce because we like spicy food, but that did not help. We began to feel unwell and requested an empty bag to take home in case we became ill on our way home. We made it home with no sickness! The place was pretty crowded, the vibe was chill, but the food needed help.

Gave this place a spin tonight & it was well worth it! Service with the staff was super good & very friendly. The staff is knowledgeable of what they like & answered all the questions of...what's the best or what do you like. Really liked the staff knew the product. The place was fun & had plenty of TVs to watch games at the bar. We had a few drinks along with oysters to start which were good. Ordered a Batman Roll & a Crunchy Crab Roll which was very good along with the Cajun Fried Rice with veggies. This is some of the freshest & outstanding fried rice dishes I have had in a while! If you are in the Overton Square area this is a must stop if you like the Asian Cajun Fusion thing that is going on here!

I ordered a ton of food. Every piece was delicious. The pushin P drink tastes like a pink starburst. Eat cocktail I've had in a long time. The seafood Fried Rice is to die for!!!! Edamame was seasoned with a crab boil mix or something. So tasty. Service was amazing, server was very attentive, kept us satisfied the entire time. Decor is simple and straight forward, no complaints over here. lol. Will come back forever

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the M. I love their shaggy dog roll, seafood fried rice, crab boils, and especially the grilled Atlantic salmon. Most things on the menu are good; you can't really go wrong here. The staff is always super friendly and hospitable. The ambiance reminds me of a traditional seafood restaurant.

Had a great time catching up with friends here on New Year's Day. The food was fantastic and OMG the drinks!!

Don't walk, run here! Literally one of my favorite places, especially for happy hour! The drinks are cheap & the food always hits, literally no matter what you get. Definitely a place you can come as you are, dress up or down. It doesn't matter. The vibe is always a fun time & the service is top tier! Tell em, Lauren sent you!

The bar itself is intimate with about 8 seats, so get there early if you want one. From the outside, the place looks like a literal house, but once you step inside it's a whole vibe: low lighting, great music, and nonstop food and drinks flowing. The bartenders were amazing--friendly, attentive, and clearly know what they're doing. We ordered wings, fries, Brussels sprouts, and spring rolls, plus a spicy margarita and French 75s. Every single thing hit. The food came out quick, fresh, and piping hot, and the drinks were perfectly balanced. By the time we left around 7 PM, the place was completely packed. This spot fills up fast for a reason. Can't wait to come back and work our way through more of the menu. Highly recommend--this is a must-visit.

Swamp Bar has the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. The vibe is great, there…read moreis plenty of seating, and the inside DJ keeps the energy going. One suggestion: the front patio could really benefit from some music. Even a low-volume speaker tied into the DJ's system would help create the same experience outside without disturbing the neighborhood. The biggest challenge is parking. Street parking is risky, and several visitors have learned the hard way that tickets are easy to get. Save yourself the headache and use the parking garage across the street for about $4. It's worth it compared to a $25 parking ticket. Unfortunately, service was the weakest part of the experience. The staff appeared overworked, overwhelmed, and likely short-staffed. While that is understandable, the customer experience suffered. There was very little interaction from greeters, servers, or bartenders. Guests are instructed to wait to be seated, but there was little guidance, communication, or assistance. Long waits and a lack of acknowledgment made the visit frustrating. Food was mixed. The wings and fries were excellent--so good they disappeared before there was time to take a picture. The spring rolls, however, were under-seasoned, slightly overcooked, and only two come with an order, which felt disappointing for the price. The dipping sauces helped, but the filling could have used more flavor. The standout of the night was the Smash It cocktail. Made with Suntory Toki whiskey, basil, lemon, simple syrup, and an absinthe rinse, it was refreshing, balanced, and absolutely delicious. Easily the highlight of the visit. Would I return? Yes. But next time I'll go with adjusted expectations: eat beforehand, enjoy the atmosphere, grab a cocktail, and consider anything else a bonus. Pro Tips: Order the Smash It cocktail. The wings and fries are worth trying. Park in the garage across the street. Don't expect fast service during busy times. If you're hungry, have a snack before you arrive. Great atmosphere and cocktails, but service and parking keep it from reaching its full potential. With better staffing and a little more attention to guests, this place could easily be a 5-star experience.

A prime location for a prime steakhouse. The service was strong as was the pacing. I found the server a bit too eager to explain the restaurant and the menu. I'm a ribeye eater so I had a pretty good idea I was getting a ribeye before I went in. I think the talking is used as a way to upsell and push guests towards opaquely priced off-menu "specials" which from my understanding are always on offer (such as their deviled eggs and bone marrow sauce). We started with the beef tartare and duck ravioli. I preferred the tartare, which had a nice spicy seasoning throughout. The duck ravioli had an excellent sauce on it, too. For our mains, I got the prime boneless ribeye ($68) and my brother got the prime strip ($56). We also shared the Yume A5 Wagyu experience ($225), letting us try three different cuts of Wagyu side by side. For sides (about $15/each), we did the fontina potatoes, truffle honey tots, and carrots. We also added the gulf prawns ($21), foie gras ($14), and bone marrow sauce (~$20) which was prepared table side and was plenty to share. It was very rich and peppery, though a bit of a salt bomb. For dessert, we shared the French toast bread pudding with maple butter ($14) which is one of my favorite bread puddings I've tried. They also brought my brother a dessert since it was his birthday, it was something like a raspberry mousse with coconut foam and a sharp raspberry sauce. Excellent. The Yume experience was a big motivation in coming here, as getting to try cuts of A5 Wagyu next to cuts of regular (albeit prime) beef is unique in the Memphis area and really for hours around. It was priced as an experience rather than a food item. It did not disappoint, nor did the prime steaks. The A5 is so unbelievably tender by comparison. My favorite was the ribeye, but I'm biased. My brother, normally a strip guy, agreed with me there. The potato sides were underwhelming, particularly for the price. I don't know how I let my brother talk me into buying him $15 tater tots for his birthday. I could get the carrots again, though. My total was $800 for the two of us for the above food, six cocktails, and tax and tip. A big chunk of that was the Yume experience as well as the drinks (we were celebrating!). If we were to go back, it would be closer to $350 for the two of us, and I would go for the prime ribeye with foie gras again, no need for Wagyu or sauce. I enjoy the sister restaurants in this restaurant group (Coastal Fish, Flight, Southern Social) and frankly I'd bet Porch is the cash cow of the group due to the relatively poor value proposition. We had a great experience exploring the finest steak and accompaniments one could wish for. But, for my money, Coastal does a pretty good steak too.

I feel like this place embodies the essence of my inner peace somehow. It was born as a overflow bar for Iris from the lore I hear. To me, as I see it, this place became Chef Kelly's escape to reality as far as food, atmosphere, and service are concerned. I think this place presents his personality in his relaxed more chill version. If you have ever been to Iris, specifically, when it was next door, you would understand what I mean. When it was the tiny place it had some kind of pretentiousness to it that just turned me off. I only ate there once. It would take weeks to get a reservation before he moved it and the constant limelight had to be a lot of pressure. This place though.... I could come here three times a week no issue. In fact, I actually wish that I could eat here three days a week. Second Line is moving soon. They are going back to being next door to Iris in the newer Laurelwood location. In some ways I wonder if Chef needs that jovial comfort of a place next to Iris to keep him grounded. As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

Again not terrible but not particularly tasty. The red beans .... Horrible. Sister said the Gator chili was decent and the only thing she would ever consider ordering again though containing very little actual gator meat. I ordered a half dozen grilled oysters. According to the menu they where to be toped with shrimp cheese and louisiana mirepoix. Oysters came out with no grilled flavor drowned in some sort of cream and cheese .... No shrimp ... Not so much as an onion in sight much less a mirepoix! I had ordered the shrimp and grits as I had been told there was nothing but seafood in them .... Boy was that a lie. I fished out six smallish shrimp and ate just them. My sister had the Jambalaya. It consisted of tiny little salad shrimp chicken and slices of sausage and a strange flavor which she finally isolated to the actual sausage. We grew up on aundouille sausage ... In fact our uncle makes it occasionally. Whatever that was in the jambalaya they where calling aundouille we are not totally convinced it was ... And my sister said the bad flavor was conning from the fact the sausage tasted spoiled. Needless to say ... She did not eat more than a few bites of the jambalaya. So there we sat with huge bowls of uneaten food ... Empty water glasses... And all our other plates (from the soup and oysters) crowding our small table. I was never asked if I'd like another beer ... No offer to remove plates... No water refill. In fact our waitress practically ignored us and had to be flagged down for anything. My sister optimistically wanted to try the bread pudding .... I warned her ... But she did it anyway. I tried a bite. It was terrible. My sister being of the more steel stomach type (and her side was covered in Caramel sauce) ate several bites before she made this funny face ... 'This is freezer burnt!' I just said 'I told ya. I can't believe you ate even that much!' It took forever to get our final bill for a table full of practically uneaten food. Then to top it all off ... We both got a little sick. And as we had not eaten anything else that day ... Other than Bayou. In the middle if this review I decided that one star was really an unfair assessment .... In this case zero stars would have been generous. I suppose if you are just wanting to hang out at a bar .... It would serve that purpose.... Maybe they should just remove 'Grill' from their name altogether ... And do us all a favor - stop serving whatevet that is they are calling food!

Had dinner here a few weeks ago and I still can't stop thinking about the smoked salmon tostada!…read moreThe starters were definitely the highlight of the night -the calamari, salmon tostada, and fresh guac were all incredible. We also tried the Thai tuna roll and coconut shrimp rolls, which were delicious. The sushi did have a thicker layer of rice, so we were pretty full afterward, but the flavors were well balanced. I was especially surprised by the addition of macadamia nuts in one of the rolls, but it added such a great crunch and paired perfectly. We also ordered the street corn and yuca frita which were excellent, especially with the delicious green dipping sauce. To finish, we had the tres leches cake, affogato, and torta de chocolate. The flourless chocolate cake literally melts in your mouth. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and will definitely be back soon!

The space is sleek, aiming for elevated coastal dining in Memphis. I recommend making a reservation on Resy or calling ahead by phone. The parking garage at Crosstown Concourse is convenient (the first floor is free for the first two hours, and the other floors are free at all times). There is also street parking available around the area. Upon entry, the hostess stand is immediately to the left, with an open kitchen and a small bar directly ahead. The main dining area is spacious with widely spaced tables, and there is also an outdoor patio. FOOD: 1. Coconut Shrimp Roll (4/5): It's a solid execution with a nice balance of sweetness and texture. The coconut adds a subtle crispness without overpowering the roll, and the seafood flavor still comes through. It's not overly complex. 2. Calamari (4/5): It's lightly fried with a good crunch and not greasy, which already puts it above average. The seasoning is balanced rather than heavy-handed, and it works well as a shared starter. 3. Cajun Ruby Trout with Coleslaw (4/5): This is the most cohesive dish of the three. The trout is well-cooked and lightly seasoned with a Cajun kick that doesn't overwhelm the fish. The coleslaw adds a cooling contrast that keeps the dish grounded. Overall, we enjoyed our time at Briza. Our drinks never reached the bottom before being refilled, and we finished all of the food between the two of us. Would I come back? Yes.

The lamb sliders remain my go-to. They're consistently juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly every time. Paired with the crispy fries, it's a meal that never disappoints. This visit, I ordered a Sidecar, but the bartender didn't have every ingredient needed for the traditional recipe. Instead of saying no, they created their own twist--and it was absolutely delicious. Sometimes improvisation pays off, and this cocktail was proof. The salmon was also excellent. I ordered it prepared the original way instead of the new menu version that includes Brussels sprouts, and it was exactly what I was craving. One of the highlights of the visit was an unexpected surprise from our waiter, who brought us a sample of their avocado ice cream. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was creamy, smooth, and surprisingly delicious. It was a thoughtful gesture that added to an already great dining experience. The only disappointment? They no longer offer the flight sampler. I was genuinely sad to see it gone because it was one of my favorite ways to experience several menu items in one visit. Overall, Babalu continues to deliver excellent food, attentive service, and outstanding drinks. Even with the flight no longer available, it's still one of my top recommendations in Memphis. 5/5 Stars - Consistent quality, excellent hospitality, and a place I'll gladly keep returning to.
