I purchased gumbo and chicken nuggets for $6.50 and $4.99. The gumbo was watery, mostly celery, okra, and onions with very few shrimp or meat; I think I counted 3 shrimp in the pint. It was not good at all! Also, instead of getting an itemized receipt, you get a receipt with the total which added up to $13.48. it appears they added a TIP and tax automatically (I never authorized a tip 4 a counter pick up order.) OMT: The clerk/waiter who took the money then went back and prepared the food no gloves! I thought there was a law against taking the money and fixing the food by the same person with the same hands. I don't know why I've waited so long to review this place!! I love getting food from here. At one point I was going like once a week. To me, it's that good. I even got my brother to try them and now he's just as hooked lol. The first thing I tried was the crawfish, I believe. They are seasoned so well. Some of the best crawfish I've tasted in the Memphis area. They also have many other wonderful menu items. I've tried their crab legs, shrimp, wings, fish, fried okra, fried rice and wings, and I can honestly say I was pleased with it all. Reasonably priced as well. On top of that, I have never experienced a problem with customer service and haven't had to experience long wait times for my food, even when I've had a big order! What more can you ask for? I had my first frog legs at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica many years ago and fell in love with them. My now 20 year old son shares this love. When I visit him in St. Louis throughout his school year I usually take about 9 frog legs for him to enjoy and share with the uninitiated. Ellis Seafood has fantastic frog legs! They are large and always perfectly cooked with a light batter and come with a side of French cut fries. If you've never had frog legs or the ones you had didn't leave a good impression go and order them from Ellis. They are a destination trip for me and everyone I've introduced them to over many years. Obviously the frog legs are ordered but also their cooked garlic shrimp by weight. You tell them what size shrimp and what weight you would like and they cook them for you. Example: "I'd like one and a half pounds of jumbo cooked shrimp." What you will get is one and a half pounds of jumbo shrimp in a plastic bag with sliced onions swimming in a garlic butter sauce. This is an incredibly delicious dish! You have to pull the shell and tail off the shrimp but the dish is worth the work. When I was working, I once opened this delicious bag in a closed office for my lunch. Within minutes I had people from all over the building coming to my office like I was the Pied Piper of delicious food! I wouldn't open the door lest I get mobbed and stripped of this Siren dish that called hapless people from afar. I've given this dish to people during times of their mourning or as a "Thank You!" with great effect. It's that good. The same for the frog legs. They have a teriyaki rice dish that is also delicious. Super nice people run the restaurant that started in Jackson MS from what I've been told. Food is cooked fast with short wait times even when busy. Food is cooked fresh when ordered. I don't think they take phone orders because of this. Now as a seafood restaurant, they have the usual suspects: catfish, tilapia, crayfish, lobster, crab legs, etc. The aforementioned dishes are so good that I haven't been able to get past them to try other foods! read more

I'm not sure what I was thinking on my first visit giving them 5 stars, but I obviously liked it that day. I couldn't even eat the crap today. $17 for one piece of cat, some nasty fried up shrimp, hush puppies, fries, gumbo, and a drink, and I didn't like anything. The closest thing I came to liking was the hush puppies. What made it so expensive was that I threw half of it away. That means I paid twice what it should cost. Catfish: this was the nastiest thing on my plate. I've caught, cleaned, and fried hundreds of cat and I have never seen this color or tasted this flavor before. It was grayish, brownish in color and for it to be a small farm raised channel, I don't buy it. It should be pure white and taste clean. If catfish was supposed to taste like this, I'd never fish again. Gross Shrimp: This is another example of truly disgusting. It wasn't fresh at all. I know it was frozen, but when I say it wasn't fresh, I mean it was borderline spoiled. Once I peeled the cornmeal away, you can tell how nasty it was by my pictures. Gross. Apparently I liked them on my first visit. Fries: Even the fries were not good. My opinion was that they tasted freezer burned. Gumbo: Not that great either. My biggest complaint is that rather than mix the rice in, they put a scoop of rice in your cup, then add the soup in on top of it. That way you eat a bunch of soup without rice, and if you didn't know you were supposed to stir it yourself (it's not like it came with instructions) then you discover that you have half a cup of rice at the bottom. No sausage. It has boiled chicken though. I'm not sure if that's right. It has little soup size shrimp. It's got bay leaves or something in it that you can't eat. The celery was good, but okra was mush. On my first visit I said it was fast food, but I liked it. My second visit, it was just bad fast food. There won't be a third visit. Here's my guess, and it's only an assumption: I believe their freezer thawed everything out and either was fried while thawed out, or it re-froze. It's just one possible explanation. I'll give 2 stars because it used to be good. read more

I called the store to ask about the cooking time on the gizzards and I was told that they boiled the gizzards first and then fry them. They were the worst I had ever had. Wow just ventured out to Ellis Seafood last night. Supposedly they have been open for a yr now but they just started serving crawfish. We ordered 3lbs to try (medium to hot flavor) and it was seasoned just right. Its the beginning of the season right now so the mudbugs are gonna be a little small. The thing that got my taste buds going is how the crawfish is seasoned. I like the seasoning with a kick so i'll go with the hot next time. They then put the crawfish in a bag to keep in the flavor. We added a side of 3 corns and they were sweet and delicious! I would definitely recommend getting crawfish here. They serve other seafood items like crablegs, shrimp, frog legs, fried rice, etc. I did not see any alcohol but I am fine without it. The building looks like an old KFC location. Every time I've bought them here, and got home, 99% alive rate, good size, and good quality crawfish. Yes, they cook them here, but, I'm not a fan of crawfish cooked with garlic cloves for seasoning. There are WAY TOO MANY seasonings out there just for crawfish that don't detract from the creature itself like garlic cloves. We also had the catfish lunch here 1 time, pretty decent, especially for the price. You can order however many lbs. of live bugs you want. No need to go to B'lly's in S'haven and argue with him that you want to buy less than a sack or 35 lbs. Why waste your time. This fried seafood and chicken shack is where you'll get your typical fried fish, shrimp, or chicken. It's all of those but with an Asian twist. I think this is one of those either you love it or hate it kind of place. Luckily, no one has given this place a bad review yet! And I'm not about to be the first! Now I came here here with my coworker and we had fried fish, seasoned fried whole wings, and 2lbs of cooked spicy crawfish. I always order seasoned wings first time at a hot wings place just to see the quality of the chicken not covered in sauce. The fish and the chicken were fresh and not over cooked. YEAH! The seasoning had a hint of Asian flavors, and it was lighter than I would have expected in this neighborhood, which is not surprising considering the Asian twist. When BJ's, Memphis Best, and Ching's are right in the neighborhood, I honestly would recommend Ellis to dust the chicken with more of that seasoning or give me ranch dressing. With the tartar sauce, I can't really complain much about the fish. Next time I order wings, I would order hot or honey gold wings which probably would eliminate the light seasoning issue on the chicken. Now let me talk about the cooked crawfish. Here you have two choices, regular or spicy. I chose spicy. I'm used to the traditional crawfish boils. Instead of the plain dry cajun seasoning in the boil like you get everywhere else, here we have lots of real minced garlic and red peppers and sliced onions, making an incredibly flavorful southeast Asian style broth. Vampires beware! They cook the shrimp and the crabs in this same broth too, which makes this even more tasty. I want to drink this broth! I wonder if the gumbo is cooked using that broth, cause if it is, I'll be here all the time. But this was the messiest crawfish boil I've ever had thanks to all that real garlic and peppers. Since nobody said it was a CAJUN crawfish boil, this is fantastic. It could be even better if the spicy was spicier! But if you want a traditional cajun crawfish boil, I wouldn't recommend this place. I came back on the next day and had the gumbo and shrimp fried rice. Let's talk about the fried rice first because that's easy to talk about. IT IS GOOD. As for the gumbo, the gumbo is rich in ingredients. It's got lots of chicken, shrimp, okra, celery, and rice. This is probably vampire safe. But that seafoody goodness flavor of that broth I talked about before is in the gumbo, but not the flagrance of the ridiculous amount of garlic or onions as in the crawfish. At just $5 for a 16oz cup, it is a fantastic deal! This may have become my goto weekday lunch place. read more
