I ordered the Shrimp Poboy and was so excited, my mouth watering, thinking of hot delicious juicy shrimp spilling out of a well dressed Poboy bun. I am pretty happy to have finally made it into this place! It has been there for years and for some reason I just have never been. I have now been here twice and I was shocked to see how busy they were on my second visit on Saturday night. I now understand why... The catfish is AWESOME! It is really some of the best I have ever had! The breading is unique in how in encapsulates the fish and kind of like steam/pressure cooks it. It is perfectly spiced and crunchy like it should be. I have had a few side dishes and I really liked the Onion Rings, the fries are Thick Steak Cut, Cole Slaw was on point, and although pre-battered frozen the Fried Okra was solid. The corn looked awful but was actually really good. Reason for only 4 stars... The Hush Puppies sucked! Boo! Why? It could have been love! The Shrimp is also pre-battered frozen... I absolutely love Southwind Fish!! I come here about 3 times a month and have yet to be disappointed. They have the BEST catfish I have EVER had. The catfish nuggets are well seasoned and perfectly fried. The hush puppies are delicious and so is the potato salad. The restaurant is small but always clean. The staff is friendly. I get their catfish dinner pretty much everytime I eat from there. The catfish is decent enough for me to keep going back, but still not the best, but I have yet to find better without driving near Wolfchase or Horn Lake. The fish isn't seasoned the best and is sometimes too salty. I like crispy catfish and theirs is not. However, their corn is the best I have had. Their fries are steak fries, nothing different or special. Pre-pandemic, I never ate inside, but always had to go inside to retrieve my order. It is medium sized with decent walking space between tables, the tv is normally on and the temperature is normally nice inside. Customer service is ok. Let me start by saying we are not native to Memphis and we drove 5 hours just to experience the well known history attractions. We arrived here, walked inside and before we could even get inside the door the owner or whoever works there rudely yells at us "close my door, hold on I'll get yall in a minute". I've been here a couple of times now. I was told about this place by more than just one person. I'm definitely glad I've listened to them. If there is a place that could make you feel like you're eating healthy fried foods, it's definitely this place. It kind of reminds me of going to fried chicken places in Asia. Just so not greasy and so very clean! The breading they use on the catfish and chicken are a bit different than typical southern places. I ate with my hands, and I only had to use one napkin! I have eaten here a few odd times through the years. Every time the service has been nice and the food comes out made to order and hot. The catfish "po boy" is really just a catfish sandwich as its not on anything like French bread. It was pretty good though with hot catfish, tomato and lettuce on it. I've noticed how others have talked about the rude woman(because ladies have class)that takes your order when you first come in the front door. I was just amazed at the bad attitude of this woman. I'm a lady of a particular age, eat out often and not sure how SOUTHWIND FISH handles carry out orders. It sounds simple, right? NOT! I placed my order, left to gas up car, came back within 30 minute, walked in to see if order was ready. The woman says to me, "did we text you that your order was ready," rudely. No, I said but I was just checking back. Mam, we'll text you when your order is ready, again quite rude. She says, mam, that's where the pick up order people come in (where I was standing ). I explained that I would move if someone comes in to pick up order. (Cold outside coming and going).Only one person came to pick up order and she came in thru the "place order". On April 18, 2012 I had to changed my shower head and decided to go to Lowe's and straight back to this house. As I exited Lowe's and aroma swopped by my nose. I wasn't going to eat out tonight but I decided to investigate aroma. Southwind Fish was producing the smell that captivated my sense of smell. So I ordered the catfish fillets dinner to go. They provided enough to eat at a reasonable price. Now for the taste. It was delicious. The dinner came with two sides, I chose slaw and hush puppies. The slaw was sprinkled with cajun seasoning, which was new for me, but good. Only issue of the experience was that they did not accept American Express, got build my sky miles up. read more

The fish was delicious, along with the okra and hush puppies. Although the hush puppies were a little small compared to what I'm used to, they were still good. Service was friendly and efficient. I will not go out on the limb to say it's the best in Memphis (because I think Soul Fish is), but I did like it. Now, beware, the menu/pricing on Urban Spoon is outdated. What a great experience! Generous portions prepared perfectly, delicious flavor, friendly service, pleasant, quiet atmosphere for a Saturday at 12:30. We ordered 3 Catfish Po'boys and a basket of hushpuppies - the po'boys came with 2 thick pieces of catfish fillets, dressed with tomato, lettuce, pickles and sauce on a soft hoagie bun with a large stack of lightly seasoned fries (just right). We shared a basket of hushpuppies - enough for the 3 of us to share - cannot have fish without hushpuppies! We chose to eat in - they had a full house and a few take-outs! Often some cooks are mislead into opening business's that actually do not reflect their ability to prepare delicious home cook meals. Once you step forward into the public arena the food needs to be competitive with non African American vendors who employ recipes that reflect home cooking. Today was my first and last experience at this eatery for the food was over cooked or resembled quick frozen/prior prep faults. I ordered the big bone buffalo and catfish steaks. The steaks were not available therefore I the order the whole catfish. Buffalo is a real southern eating treat if prepared correctly. It is a product that can not be stored long term not without becoming stronger to the taste (Mississippi Mud Taste seasoned with a old fish taste) There are prep steps for storage tricks that can assist with help prolonging a fresh taste with a less fishy (sardine like taste). Dumb the old product it is part of the cost of operating a food establishment. Good cooks shop beyond the intimate family relations for cooking tips this improves your product.
