Valentines dinner reservations, got there right on time and sat immediately. We had a table on the patio and it was a cooler night but they had the space heaters on and was perfectly comfortable. The service was spot on all night from the time we sat down to when we left and since we had never been he did a great job in the beginning explaining the menu, some popular dishes and offering suggestions. I wish I remembered his name, taller mature gentleman, bit of an accent, I want to say Lucha but could be totally wrong. He made it even better by recognizing the holiday talking about wanting to make it a great evening etc. For the drinks and food we loved everything we had ordered. The El Pepino drink was great with a little spice but not too much. The appetizers we did was the red snapper ceviche and crispy chicken taquitos, both of which I'd recommend. I had the halibut with broccolini and my partner the lamb chops, both cooked perfectly, just couldn't have asked for a better dinner, service and atmosphere. My repeat visit to Flora during happy hour was truly outstanding, and Lindy made the entire experience memorable from start to finish. Finally tried it for the first time since it was the Dunlavy. In all, I thought it was good but terribly overpriced. And the $10 forced valet is overkill. It's a pretty place and I liked the bar tables in the front. It felt pretty festive and was really busy. The bar is small and there's no real waiting area so that's awkward but fortunately our table was ready when we arrived. The tequila and mezcal selection is impressive. I tried a southside and enjoyed it. Again the food is just too much for what it is. $20 queso was basic and came with barely any chops. Salad and shrimp were fine but nothing memorable. It's a fun and less Tex mex style than the usual spots but I'm in no rush to return. read more

This restaurant is stunning! The chandeliers are absolutely gorgeous. Our server was prompt, polite, and informative. We were here for drinks and appetizers, but I would absolutely return for a brunch, lunch, or dinner. I had the hibiscus margarita, and we tried the sopecitos, and guacamole and chips. The margarita was excellent, with a little bit of sweet and tang, but not too much. The sopecitos were warm and included refried beans, sour cream, and queso fresco. The chips and guacamole were pretty standard, but good. The restaurant has other vegetarian options, including flora salad, burrata verde, papas a la brava, escabeche, cucumbers & avocado, mushrooms al ajillo, brunch quinoa, huevos rancheros, and chilaquiles. The Mezcal and Flora Margarita were must-tries, and they did not disappoint. The Flora Margarita, in particular, was amazing. First time at this restaurant and was left in love. We came by 3 weeks ago with large group from work. I absolutely love the outdoor as you arrive, but absolutely in love with the décor. The colorful chairs make you feel the warmth and love of Mexico. The many beautiful chandelier hanging from the high ceilings makes you feel as if the sun was right above you. This immediately makes you feel so positive. The staff is always kind and smiling as you walk in or go to the bathroom. I was absolutely taken aback when I walked into the bathroom inside and the speakers had very loud reggaeton music which I absolutely love was not expecting it to feel like I was at a party. I think the change was noticeable because the speakers in the dining area were still at very low volume. They increased the volume at around 7 pm and reduced the brightness on the chandelier. It made very romantic. The perfect place to be proposed for sure. Our server was Adrian and loved how he knew everything about the menu. He recommended me the Michelada and I tried it with a Pacifico beer. I was absolutely happy with it. A few in my group had a few different margaritas and loved it too. The food was phenomenal! We ordered a few appetizers to share. We had Guacamole and chips, Ceviche, Queso Dip with chips. We ordered so many things but here some of the things we ordered and ate it all, Carnitas Tacos, Shrimp Tacos, Enchiladas; lamb chops, and had a delicious dessert. I have to be honest the dessert was a big surprised for me. I didn't ordered it but when I tried that delicious chocolate moose/pudding and combination of the smooth vanilla and orange zest ice cream; I felt like fireworks went of in my mouth. Flora's been on my list to try for some time. Happy to finally check this place out with some friends! It's absolutely stunning inside. Love that this place feels like it's part of an urban park. Food - I got to try the Charred Octopus, Gratify Ceviche, and Braise Short Rib Special of the Day. Aesthetically, I thought the Octopus dish looked messy but it was tasty. It had a nice charred flavor and texture. The Chorizo that comes with it does have a little heat/spice to it. Overall this was a good savory dish to start and think the portion is just right. The Gratify Ceviche was light, tasty, and refreshing. The sweetness in it just right for me. I could totally eat more of this. The Short Ribs were really good. I was afraid it would be too heavy but think the portion works. Note: I was sharing this dish so probably why it didn't feel as heavy as I thought it would. The meat was tender and fell off the bone. It paired really well with the smoky sweet flavor of the mole sauce. The black bean tamal was different and tasted great with everything else on the dish. Drinks - I tried the El Pepino, the Grant, and the Carajillo. El Pepino is refreshing. Not too sweet or tart. Think the cucumber mellows that out really well. The Grant had a good mezcal flavor to it. Just enough smokiness. The carajillo was spot on. It tasted like a delicious cold brew. Fitting for the weather and a good energy boost from all the eating. Service - We were seated right away. Our waiter gave us time to order and made sure to check on us every so often. Waters were constantly getting refilled. Other things to keep I mind - The entrance is interesting. I walked past valet, down a walk way, past a restroom, and then at the very end is the door. Parking is a mix of self parking and valet. However, the majority of the lot is used for valet. I arrived when it opened so was able to find a self parking spot so something to keep in mind, otherwise, it'll just be valet. I also read on another review that it can get hot and was afraid of that since there was a baby with us and a pregnant friend. Luckily, it turned out okay. Think it's because we went early when it's not as crowded. This place is bookable on Open Table. Lastly, it is an upscale Mexican place so expect to pay a bit more, especially on the drinks. Intro: I have been to Flora twice: once on a date and once for an event. Located off of Allen Parkway, Flora shares a parking lot with Buffalo Bayou Park so parking spots are at a premium. If you don't find an open spot, you're likely stuck doing valet as there isn't street parking close by. This upscale restaurant is in the same space as Kitchen at the Dunlavy used to be. Ambiance (5/5): This is one of the areas where Flora shines. The main dining room contains a lovely assortment of chandeliers. The same chandeliers that Kitchen at The Dunlavy was known for. Combine the elegance of the interior of the restaurant with the beautiful views of the Bayou that you can see through the large windows and that creates quite the ambiance. If you want to maximize the scenic views, stop by at sunset. Service (4/5): The service each time I've visited has been friendly, consistent, and efficient. The only real complaints I have here are connected to logistics. The entrance to the restaurant is on the side of the property instead of the front. If it's your first time and you haven't been told where the entrance is located, you'll likely be confused at first. Second, Flora doesn't have a bathroom inside the restaurant. You have to walk outside to reach the restrooms. Drinks (4/5): Flora has a nice list of drinks. I've had several cocktails and beer over my two visits. One of the beers I tried was a Mexican beer that I had never seen anywhere else. The name is escaping me but the bottle was impressive (the labeling was like a work of art and the beer was tasty). I've also had several cocktails and they haven't disappointed. Since Flora is a Mexican restaurant, you'll see a focus on tequila and mezcal. With that being said, they have a lot outside of that too. Food (4/5): As an upscale restaurant, the food and the drinks aren't cheap. Nor are the portion sizes large. But, the food is quite good for the most part. I've had several appetizers (octopus and chips with queso/guac/salsa), entrees (tacos al pastor and barbacoa), and dessert (tres leches). A close friend and I had this place on our radar for quite some time and finally had a nice little date night here to check it out. It used to be the Dunlavy, but still has the same décor and beautiful setting as before. Getting in and out of this place isn't fun and parking is horrible. Valet is your only option and it is pretty slow. We had a reservation and was seated promptly. The inside is absolutely stunning with all the chandeliers and floor to ceiling glass windows which gives great views from any angle. Customer service was friendly but slow as well. We ordered drinks as well as the charred octopus to start with. As we looked over the menu for entrees, we had an emergency pop up and had to leave. As it happened, the octopus came out so we decided to eat that and then take off. That octopus dish was probably one of the better ones I have ever had. It was charred perfectly and so tender. The texture and seasoning was perfect. We were wondering how the chorizo and sweet potato would pair with it, but it worked together in perfect harmony. The house made chorizo was delicious and had a nice kick to it as well. It was great, but I felt it was pretty overpriced for what we got. Overall, the little time we had there was ok. This is one of those places that you pay for the ambience and views. I'm glad I got to try it, but I don't have any kind of urgency to hurry back. INCOMPETENT HOSTESS STAND/DOES NOT HONOR RESERVATIONS We paid $275 for a very poor experience at Flora last night due to the incompetent Hostess Stand and mediocre food. We made a reservation for 4 at 7 pm to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. We arrived on time at 7pm and the Hostess told us that "it might be a minute" and to "wait in the bar". 40 MINUTES LATER after inquiring with the Hostess twice and speaking with the Manager, we were finally seated. Interestingly: 1. The Hostess was well aware that their seating schedule was severely backed up so why could she not have been honest with us and have said "it will be about a 40 minute wait so you'll have to wait in the crowded bar area and buy $18 cocktails"?? This would have allowed us to make an informed decision as to whether to stay or not. We definitely would have left. 2. The Hostess continued to seat people who arrived after us at tables both inside and out. 3. Inexplicably patrons who had paid and finished their meal were allowed to linger on and on. As just one example, when we arrived there was a table with 3 women who had a big Flora "doggie bag" sitting on their table so they had presumably finished dinner. They were there at 7 pm when we arrived. They were still there when we left at 9:30 pm! Why could these 3 women not have been asked to move to the bar? 4. At 7:35 pm, we began looking at Open Table to find somewhere else to eat. Amazingly, even though Flora was packed inside and out and not seating people like us with reservations, Flora was offering tables for 4 at 7:45 pm! See pic. 5. There are a number of complaints on Yelp about Flora not honoring reservations. Why does Management not read these and correct the issues? 6. Although we noted on our Open Table reservation that it was our daughter's birthday, neither the Hostess nor waiter said anything about it. How difficult is it to wish someone a mere "Happy Birthday"? 7. Although the Manager was kind enough to offer complimentary guacamole and fried cornmeal rounds, it didn't make up for the aggravating and expensive experience. We spent approximately $80 at the bar WHILE NEEDLESSLY WAITING FOR A TABLE and $195 for decidedly average enchiladas and shrimp tacos, and an inedible lentil/quinoa salad. 8. Why doesn't Flora do away with misleading "reservations" and be a walk-in restaurant only? read more

Visited Flora recently for a business event and was very impressed. We were gathered in a private room and the menu was fixed but if our experience even remotely mirrors what the typical fare is like, it is worth a visit. We started the evening with appetizers, most noteworthy was the charred octopus, done right this is exquisite, done wrong it's like chewing on a tire. Happy to report Flora got it right. Perfectly charred and tender, the octopus was accompanied by chorizo and sweet potato and the combo worked. We also were served a ceviche with a mango jalapeño dressing, sopecitos and a queso with chorizo and chips. All were well executed. Our mains featured a choice of short rib in a red mole, garlic shrimp or fresh fish. The short rib was falling off the bone tender and the mole was rich and earthy.
