My friend and I were looking for a place to eat around 10pm on a Friday night. We didn't want to walk in too close to closing so as soon as we got into Flat Top I asked if they were still taking walk ins and they said yes. More people came in after us so I didn't feel super pressured. We ordered: 3.5/5 veggie miso ramen - flavor was strong but not a lot of depth. Came with A LOT of mushrooms and tofu which was so great. I think there was more tofu than noodle. Pretty good value in that sense but too expensive for what it was. I could get better ramen at that price point from a ramen specific restaurant. Probably wouldn't get it again but I'm not mad at it either. 4.5/5 thai red curry - surprisingly good! Comes with a piece of roti on top. I ate a lot of frozen roti growing up and this tastes like that! It's a little sweet which was nice. The rice was flavorful but also lacked a little depth after eating more of it. We both liked this dish more than the ramen. 5/5 blue dragon - it tasted like juice! So easy to drink. Good price. My friend and i both liked this one more than the paloma. 4/5 dragon fruit paloma - it came with a black a salt rim! The salt rim was only on the edge of half the cup but it still looked cool. This one was a little smoky. Couldnt taste the alcohol much but more than the blue dragon. We didn't want to stay too late so I asked for a to go cup for the rest of my drink and they had one for me! I got to finish my drink outside. I would come back here for a late night snack or to pick up a drink (not sure if they allow to-go drinks but i would try to). read more

I personally didn't really like this place at all. I do think it has to do with me being vegetarian and I felt the make your own bowls station was extremely unsanitary and I didn't feel comfortable getting that. I did end up getting the drunken noodles which albeit the big portion, felt like it was 80% onions and 20% noodles. I ended up leaving most of my food uneaten. It's been awhile since I've been to Flat Top Grill... I'm talking about at least 15-years. Things have changed for sure. It's no longer all-you-can-eat, by default. Pay $16 for the first plate, convert it to all-you-can-eat for $6 more. Not too bad of a price overall. First, you pick your protein on a slip of paper, write your name on the wooden stick, and poke that stick through the slip of paper. With said paper-stick contraption, grab your plate and head on to the buffet area. Start with either white or brown rice, then your assortment of veggies. Flat Top has a decent array if veggies, including bean sprouts, peapods, corn, spinach, and such. Add your sauces, and drop off your concoction at the preparation area. Overall, food was good. I enjoyed my plate of chicken and veggies. Bonus was that all plates included roti bread, which was great. My first plate was enough for me. We topped things off with some dessert and it was a great meal. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! So DELICIOUS! Our waitress was SUPER NICE and so attentive. Recommend 100%! THE ROTI BREAD! YOU CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH! Very clean spot and always such a good experience. Whenever someone visits me in Chicago, this is a must-go-to location. Even the pickiest eaters can find something to eat (and I have some very picky eaters in my family). The create-your-own stir fry bowl options allow you to choose everything from your protein, grains, veggies, and sauces. I have tried all of their proteins at this point and my recommendation is to go with the sausage if you eat meat or no protein at all if you are vegetarian and then add lots of tofu at the line. The food lines can get a little messy when it's busy. I am very glad that they now require folks to wear gloves. The only thing I will make sure to make very clear is that this location is not recommended for anyone with severe food allergies (gluten, dairy, pine nuts, etc). Service is always very fast to get your food but there are never that many waiters. Great lunch or dinner spot that you must try! read more

I have been here several times and it never gets old; grab your plate, fill it up with all your ingredients, choose your seasoning and watch the cook go to work on the grill. Don't feel bad if your creation isn't the tastiest. It takes a few times to find the right mix. Make a couple of visits, keep trying new combinations until you find that marvelous balance that gets the mouth watering. I've found mine and it was delicious. This location is located in the loop so parking is tight but a parking lot is just up the street. I stopped by on a weekday near closing time so it was a light lively crowd. I hadn't been to the Flap Top Grill in years. Today, I remembered why I stopped going. The first thing I noticed about this location upon entering was that it seemed pretty run down. It didn't feel clean, and the decor seemed outdated. The host wasn't pleasant at all. While waiting in line to put our names on the list, I went to the restroom. I noticed lots of empty tables and booths, yet the host had been putting people on the waiting list. We only waited about 15 minutes for a table, but there was no good place to stand and wait. I felt I was in the way everywhere I stood. Our server was nice but not friendly or engaging. I ordered water with lime; no lime. For the appetizer, we ordered the Crab Rangoon dip. It was mediocre. The cranberry margarita was decent and well priced at $6; it was a strong pour! For my meal, I ordered Drunken Noodles with shrimp. Blah! The shrimp were sad and unseasoned. The pasta was chopped up instead of full, long noodles. The sauce was bland, and there wasn't nearly enough of it for a dish called Drunken Noodles. We ordered two extra pieces of bread and didn't receive them, but in the end, we were charged twice for them. As we left, we walked right past the staff. No one thanked us for coming in or said goodnight. This is absolutely my last trip to Flat Top Grill. read more

Flat Top Grill is usually our easy choice if we want something quick and less expensive. We visited the Flat Top Grill located in the Loop location. Here, you can either order dishes from the menu or prepare your own hot grill dish by adding veggies, meat and sauces of your choice. I curated my veggie bowl by adding all the veggies, noodles and sauces (the vindaloo sauce is my absolute favorite) and my boyfriend got the chicken bowl by adding his favorite veggies and sauces. They used to have good vegan meat options like tempura and soy fried cakes but they don't anymore. I've been to Flat Top Grill a couple of times and it's usually been a smooth process, however, for the first time we had an unpleasing experience. My boyfriend's bowl got mixed with someone else's and he had to prepare his bowl for the second time. The server was pretty rude just saying yeah it got mixed, you can either cancel your order or make another one. I will probably go back because the food is tasty and it's cheap when you want to have a quick meal. The service could be better! We also ordered a tofu quesadilla for appetizer which was pretty average, you can skip apps and go for the build your own bowls! read more

I started going to this establishment when they opened up in Arlington, va in 2003. Unfortunately, they closed it and I can only dine here when I visit Chicago. They have some changes since Covid such as: the unlimited bowl, for each additional bowl they charge you for the meat and they highly recommend for you to use gloves at the food station which is good. I think it's hugest robbery to continue to charge me every time I get a new bowl when you say the bowl is unlimited. Unlimited bowl and price is not the same. The food is still good as always. I highly recommend going back to charging one flat fee and allowing patrons to get unlimited bowls with an extra charge for each bowl. read more

We were happy with our visit to Flat Top Grill, though I think they are feeling the strain from lack of servers/employment problems visible throughout the industry. There were only 2 servers for dine-in patrons, so to not overwhelm them more there was a bit of a wait. That said, we were happy to hang out at the bar while waiting. My husband and I built our own bowls, both of which came out scrumptious. A little pricey if you don't fill the bowl up beyond the brim. The grilled edamame was also very tasty.
