I love love loooooooooove this place! I don't come here too often because it's not close to me, but when I get the chance, I'm always sooooo happy to have gone! When you come, they seat you and ask you what protein you want. I always pick the chicken and beef, but you can pick just one meat if you'd like (or none) and they have plenty to choose from. After you pick your meat, they give you a wooden stick so that you can write your name on it and so you can put all of your rice, noodles, and veggies in the bowl. I loooove their white rice and their yellow noodles. I also always try to put carrots, edamame, tons of cilantro, jalapenos, green onions, snap peas, and garlic in it (along with tons of others). They honestly have TONS of things to choose from. Then, once you put all of these things into your bowl, there are sauces you can choose from. My favorites are the teriyaki and some spicy red one that starts with a V. I sadly have no idea what it is called because I forgot, but it's the one all the way on the right bottom corner. It's spicy and wonderful! Once you put your sauce on top, you can top off with even more toppings or rice/noodles if you'd like (put AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE in your bowl), and then you move toward the flat top grills and you can add sticks for cheese, roti bread, egg, and lettuce wraps. Then, you leave your bowl there and you can sit back at your table because once it's cooked, they bring your food to you. Prices are very reasonable. $9.99 for lunch and $13.99 for dinner. However, if you want unlimited bowls, you only have to pay $4 extra, which is nothing because before, it used to be where your second bowl was half off. Portion sizes for lunch and dinner are exactly the same, so if you want cheaper food, come during lunch. The workers here are extremely nice, and they always ask you if you've been there before because if not, they actually give you a little tour of the food stations so you know what you're doing. I came here and ordered the Tofu quesadillas and the poke bowl. First and foremost, I thought the tofu quesadillas were very well down. It was almost like a stir fry combined with tortillas. The two side dips were both creamy and complimented the quesadillas really well. My only issue was with the poke bowl, which I thought was very bland initially. In the past, this was one of my favorite places to eat. Unfortunately, I hadn't been able to go in years as I live out of town and pandemic and all. I was sadly distracted by my latest visit. The hostess was great! The good service stopped with her. The waiter, who was training another waiter, seemed to need more training himself. My mom and husband, who had never been here, asked for him to explain how the menu and such worked. He refused to do so until my sister arrived. I told him she'd be late and didn't need an overview. He simply dropped off sticks with no explanation. After filling our bowls, we waited by the cooking area for our bowls to be taken. The cook took another guy's order before ours though we stood patiently waiting. We were standing there for at least three mins before the other guy came up. The cook pretended not to understand me, so I switched to speaking Spanish. He simply ignored me until the hostess came up. Since we weren't told to put our names on the sticks, there was confusion when the food came out. The food tasted fine, but the experience was subpar. On the way back from the bathroom, I noticed there was a cool picture of how ordering works. Too bad u hadn't seen it before. Though I shouldn't have needed that. I used to come here a lot when I was younger but I stopped because of prices. -They took away the meat bar where you stock whatever meat you want. Now you have to tell the server what you want beforehand. They offer scallops and salmon now. No extra charge for scallops so that's cool. -the prices went up a few dollars. This is the reason I stopped going. It used to be $7.99 lunch and add a dollar for unlimited bowls. This was nice when I was in high school. Now it's like $14 for one. -they took away TONS of sauces. I used to love making my own flavor profiles. I really liked the Viet soy sauce. It's worth a try if you are vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free. They cater to allergies and they have tons of choices to fill your bowl. I liked getting their flavored lemonades. They would even make a chipotle lemonade, too. I was walking in the loop looking for a late lunch. This place had a sign outside advertising a brand new ramen special, which sounded pretty good, so I popped in. Admittedly, I didn't do the "make your own stir fry" thing that this place seems to be known for - I got ramen and a fried rice - but I don't trust the rest of these reviews raving about how good the food is. If anyone I knew suggested Flat Top for food or told me how much they liked it, I would no longer respect their opinion on food. My ramen was disgusting. It had some sort of wrong but very strong fishy taste, and it was an over salted mess. The good thing I can think to say was that there was a lot of pork in my ramen. The portion sizes were gigantic, but it's a gigantic portion of ramen that comes in an off-putting shade of grey. I ate maybe 35% of it and didn't take the rest with me. The fried rice was also really weird. There were balls of rice that stuck together, and the rice was so over cooked it was basically mush. It felt like they had multiple pots of rice they were using, and I somehow got the end of two batches shoved into one. The rice was more edible than my ramen, however, and whatever the crispy bread was that came with it was pretty good. I ordered a "yuzu smash", which was actually pretty tasty, even though it took forever to get. Service was incredibly slow, to the point that I started wondering if they stuck us in a back corner and forgot about us (they had.) There's so much better food in the Loop. Despite only garnering a 3-star review from me, I think it's a reasonably priced option for food in the loop, and I'd refer it to a friend without thinking twice. That being said, the experience left a few things to be desired, and you can read more about my thoughts below. Wait Time - None! We got seated right away during peak dinner hours, and that is not something you can take for granted in Chicago. Setting - Nice enough. A little dark for my tastes, but a good volume and definitely somewhere you could have a conversation with ease. Service - Honestly, very lackluster. This place requires the customer to go to a stir fry bar, and the whole process was just not explained well. Also, we just couldn't understand our waitress, so perhaps if you get someone with more annunciation it would make more sense. Food - Good! You pick your ingredients and they cook it, so if you don't like the taste it's probably your fault That being said, our entire table agreed that some of the sauce gets lost in cooking. If you want a lot of flavor, do yourself a favor and put more sauce on than you think you should. Price - Mentioned it earlier, but pretty reasonable. A lot of food, and good price for dinner in the Loop. Like I said, I'd recommend this place with confidence, just think there are some things that need to be done better next time. The manager at this location was very nasty to me and I am still not sure why. The manager decided to let me know (aggressively) there was an upcharge to my bowl due to me using more than one bowl. While that is understandable, there is no reason to be rude and flippant when delivering the information, nor is there a need to interrupt my experience if I am doing things properly. I felt like he was accusing me of not having money and assuming I was attempting to get one over on someone. This is not the correct way to behave when it comes to customer service. This manager needs to be more respectful and to treat everyone with kindness-even if someone is going to be charged an additional fee. This is terrible. The shame of the matter is that the server I had was actually amazing, but this manager does not reflect the kind staff that is here. Please keep me updated if anything changes here. Part 2 Part 2- The manager just came up to me and attempted to confront me regarding his behavior by asking if there was a problem. I felt threatened and do not think I can even eat the bowl I prepared. He literally squared up to me and asked if there was an issue. What a fun place to eat! By the name of this restaurant, you wouldn't think it's a "make your own stir fry" place at all. I was thoroughly impressed (and surprised) by the wide selection of toppings they had to put into the stir fry. There was rice and noodles, tons of veggies, even stuff that you would more typically put into a salad. There is also a huge selection of sauces that you can pour into your bowl too! At the end, you can even add extra stuff you want in there, like tofu or eggs. I was very happy with my bowl of noodles that I got to make on my own. The only down side to all of this is that they give you a tiny little bowl to stuff all this food into! Then they serve it to you in an even bigger bowl when everything has already shrunk, I don't get it lol. I was on the struggle bus the whole time because my food was stacked so high that I didn't even have room to pour the sauce in! I had to ask for a separate bowl at the end for the sauce because it would've spilled everywhere. I wish they'd at least give us a plate instead because the bowl forces us to stack everything on top, making it messy. But I guess they're trying to prevent us from treating this place like a buffet lol. Apparently the lunch price is much more worth it than the dinner price~ read more

So think before you go all out and experiment.. we typically order the spicy green beans and yhe flat top quesadilla.. i stick to tofu and use a rice noodle combo with soy sesame sauce thai red curry saice with red hot chilli sauce and the non fat spicy like basil sauces.. load my bowl with veggies and hand it over to the chef.. i prefer not to experiment cos i pretty much hit my taste bud jackpot with this combination and not sure how any customization will work.. remember to use the different sticks they have if u need any cheese any bread or have any dietary restrictions or are a pure veg eater and they will take care of it! Love the casual Ambience at this place! We went to a lunch with friends while in town. The bowls to put your food together were pretty small, so you couldn't make a lot of choices. The server was really busy and never refilled my drink. We had 10 adults in for lunch, and she gave us our tab all together. When we said that we weren't "together" and needed separate checks, she looked visibly annoyed, said, "ugh, yeah, I guess I could do that but it's gonna take a few minutes." I mean, we obviously weren't a family of four and she should have asked how we wanted our checks at the beginning. The food was meh, the portion was meh for the price. This is one of the few sit-down (and currently dine-in) restaurants still open in the Loop, and we need to support Flat Top Grill. They're currently seating everyone at tables far apart. When approaching the buffet, the restaurant asks everyone to wear their mask and put on disposable, food service-style gloves to handle the buffet tongs. There's hand sanitizer nearby if you want a little added cleanliness before or after. Other than that, it's the same menu, same buffet offerings: rice and quinoa, multiple meats from which to choose, umpteen veggies, unlimited sauce combinations, and a lot of finishes. The service was--as you can imagine with so few customers--terrific. Beware of differing prices (same pricing as before the pandemic) and surcharges: multiple bowls vs one bowl, dinner vs lunch. Not much has changed at Flat Top since before the pandemic, and neither has the friendliness of the servers and cooks which could use customers now more than ever. read more
