This place is pretty good, good enough that I would visit again. Had a little trouble finding a seat because they were all below vents that were blowing cold air. Finally found a satisfactory seat. Since I am vegan, they have plenty of options, including Veat, and Sofritas. The only issue I have is that these Vegan Proteins are not a separate protein like Salmon and Chicken, so my bowl was fuller than it should have been before I took it to the fryer. I was walking in the loop looking for a late lunch. This place had a sign outside advertising a brand new ramen special, which sounded pretty good, so I popped in. Admittedly, I didn't do the "make your own stir fry" thing that this place seems to be known for - I got ramen and a fried rice - but I don't trust the rest of these reviews raving about how good the food is. If anyone I knew suggested Flat Top for food or told me how much they liked it, I would no longer respect their opinion on food. My ramen was disgusting. It had some sort of wrong but very strong fishy taste, and it was an over salted mess. The good thing I can think to say was that there was a lot of pork in my ramen. The portion sizes were gigantic, but it's a gigantic portion of ramen that comes in an off-putting shade of grey. I ate maybe 35% of it and didn't take the rest with me. The fried rice was also really weird. There were balls of rice that stuck together, and the rice was so over cooked it was basically mush. It felt like they had multiple pots of rice they were using, and I somehow got the end of two batches shoved into one. The rice was more edible than my ramen, however, and whatever the crispy bread was that came with it was pretty good. I ordered a "yuzu smash", which was actually pretty tasty, even though it took forever to get. Service was incredibly slow, to the point that I started wondering if they stuck us in a back corner and forgot about us (they had.) There's so much better food in the Loop. What a fun place to eat! By the name of this restaurant, you wouldn't think it's a "make your own stir fry" place at all. I was thoroughly impressed (and surprised) by the wide selection of toppings they had to put into the stir fry. There was rice and noodles, tons of veggies, even stuff that you would more typically put into a salad. There is also a huge selection of sauces that you can pour into your bowl too! At the end, you can even add extra stuff you want in there, like tofu or eggs. I was very happy with my bowl of noodles that I got to make on my own. The only down side to all of this is that they give you a tiny little bowl to stuff all this food into! Then they serve it to you in an even bigger bowl when everything has already shrunk, I don't get it lol. I was on the struggle bus the whole time because my food was stacked so high that I didn't even have room to pour the sauce in! I had to ask for a separate bowl at the end for the sauce because it would've spilled everywhere. I wish they'd at least give us a plate instead because the bowl forces us to stack everything on top, making it messy. Nice fusion asian place! If u dont like the food well the blame urself..ur the one picking the ingredients the proteins and the sauces and handing it over to the chef to stir fry it!! So think before you go all out and experiment.. we typically order the spicy green beans and yhe flat top quesadilla.. i stick to tofu and use a rice noodle combo with soy sesame sauce thai red curry saice with red hot chilli sauce and the non fat spicy like basil sauces.. load my bowl with veggies and hand it over to the chef.. i prefer not to experiment cos i pretty much hit my taste bud jackpot with this combination and not sure how any customization will work.. remember to use the different sticks they have if u need any cheese any bread or have any dietary restrictions or are a pure veg eater and they will take care of it! Love the casual Ambience at this place! Be careful during weekdays they do tend to shut shop before 10 pm if their business is slow (i was victim to this over a week day) but the manager was very kind of apologize and accomodate us for a free dinner on another day! I personally love make your own stir fry. This place has variety of meats, veggies and sauces to pick from. The portions are very big and the service is quick as well. The manager at this location was very nasty to me and I am still not sure why. The manager decided to let me know (aggressively) there was an upcharge to my bowl due to me using more than one bowl. While that is understandable, there is no reason to be rude and flippant when delivering the information, nor is there a need to interrupt my experience if I am doing things properly. I felt like he was accusing me of not having money and assuming I was attempting to get one over on someone. This is not the correct way to behave when it comes to customer service. This manager needs to be more respectful and to treat everyone with kindness-even if someone is going to be charged an additional fee. This is terrible. The shame of the matter is that the server I had was actually amazing, but this manager does not reflect the kind staff that is here. Please keep me updated if anything changes here. Part 2 Part 2- The manager just came up to me and attempted to confront me regarding his behavior by asking if there was a problem. I felt threatened and do not think I can even eat the bowl I prepared. He literally squared up to me and asked if there was an issue. I attempted to mention the actual concern and he said he was "just mentioning the policy to me." I just said I was going to eat my meal and did not find it necessary to feel threatened like this. This is one of the few sit-down (and currently dine-in) restaurants still open in the Loop, and we need to support Flat Top Grill. They're currently seating everyone at tables far apart. When approaching the buffet, the restaurant asks everyone to wear their mask and put on disposable, food service-style gloves to handle the buffet tongs. There's hand sanitizer nearby if you want a little added cleanliness before or after. Other than that, it's the same menu, same buffet offerings: rice and quinoa, multiple meats from which to choose, umpteen veggies, unlimited sauce combinations, and a lot of finishes. The service was--as you can imagine with so few customers--terrific. Beware of differing prices (same pricing as before the pandemic) and surcharges: multiple bowls vs one bowl, dinner vs lunch. We went to a lunch with friends while in town. The bowls to put your food together were pretty small, so you couldn't make a lot of choices. The server was really busy and never refilled my drink. We had 10 adults in for lunch, and she gave us our tab all together. When we said that we weren't "together" and needed separate checks, she looked visibly annoyed, said, "ugh, yeah, I guess I could do that but it's gonna take a few minutes." I mean, we obviously weren't a family of four and she should have asked how we wanted our checks at the beginning. The food was meh, the portion was meh for the price. Fill it up the bowl with carbs, (usually some kind of noodle or pasta), load up the bowl with veggies, mix in some sauces, lastly add in the protein. Give it to the cook and 5-7 min to walk it back to your table. Here, however, it's done slightly different. Once your bowl is cooked is brought to your table. Another thing that's different is the pricing. Usually Mongolian BBQ is an AYCE affair and there is a fixed price around $20-22. Here the starting price is $13.95 with 1 bowl with 1 choice of 8 oz meat or protein. HOWEVER, it's only $4 total for the successive bowls. If you get to bowl 2,3,4,5 the price is only $4. It's a cool concept because it helps with food waste, in my opinion, by serving one bowl of food. If you can handle some more is 1/3 the origin price for an unlimited amount food. A little confusing, I know. More often than not, I crush AYCE places, but today food won and I struggled to finish one bowl. So drop by this place when you have a chance, you won't regret it! read more

Throw on a couple ladles of sauce (or five) and let the magic happen. I always have enough for leftovers the next day so I'm a happy camper! The reason I think flattop is 4-stars instead of 5 is because of their pricing. Charging $9.99 for lunch is totally reasonable and worth it. Charging $12.99 for dinner FOR THE SAME EXACT BOWL AND PORTION is a disservice to your customers. There's no added benefit except coming before 4pm for lunch prices, or after 4pm for dinner prices. Charge a flat price for the bowls all day. Other than that, I'm sad to see so many closing down around the city! You will write your name on the wooden bookmark so they can bring the food back to you after they cook. After you tell the server what type of meat or seafood you would like and he gives you a piece of paper marked off. You used to be able to get the meat yourself. Now they limit it because people probably went overboard. I'm not sure if my concoction was bad or the food was just ok. I got a bunch of random ingredients: yellow noodle, spinach, carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, potatoes, egg and chicken. I drizzled the black bean garlic sauce on it and got the roti bread. I wasn't impressed and there was barely any meat. This place would probably be great if you want more quantity vs quality. They have an unlimited bowl if you wanted for a few extra dollars. I don't really recommend this place especially since there are so many other options nearby. Service was fine and attentive. My friends and I stayed at the Palmer hotel which is walking distance from this place. We were walking around trying to find a place to have dinner and ended up here. It was a Friday night and luckily they weren't crowded. It's stir fry buffet style. You choose what sauce, meat and veggies you want; you put it all in a bowl and they cook it for you. Once it's ready, they bring it to your table. It's not just noodles, you can have white or brown rice as well. There's so much different sauce to choose from and variety of veggies. I also like the fact that they had recommendations on what's good together. The price was I believe $9.99 for one bowl or a few dollars more for unlimited bowls? (correct me if I'm wrong) The only thing I didn't like was that it took a while to get our food because the cook tries to cook as much as possible to bring back to as many tables as possible. The idea is there but it's in dire need of a better execution! It's lunch time at 1pm on a Tuesday. My friend and I were told to wait 10 minutes. When our table was finally ready, I noticed there were a lot of empty tables as we walked in. So...why the wait? Do keep in mind, most people only get an hour for lunch. We quickly picked up our bowls and went to the buffet section. Select your rice and/or noodles and top it with a bunch of vegetables, sauce, and meat. It's the same price no matter how much ingredients you toss into the bowl. And here is where you need to be extra cautious! The staff are refilling the containers as they find necessary. They pour the sauce in while neglecting the customers' presence. I was wise enough to back up two steps before they splattered the sauce across my white blouse. Beware of your surroundings! We left our bowls by the grill for them to be cooked and returned to our table. It was another 10 minute before we finally received our food. The Chinese yellow noodles were good and the roti prata bread is a must-order. That's where I applied my two stars! The rest of the contents were slightly charred and overly salty. The meat was rough and dry. The check also takes a while to arrive. My tip to lunch diners is to immediately ask for the check when they arrive with your bowls. I have only been here a few times and my last visit pre-dated Yelp. The food here is always good, although my wife does not agree. I had whitefish as the protein option. The resulting stir fry is pictured with this review. My complaint is that it is difficult to judge how much sauce is necessary. I am not a line cook or chef and would prefer to leave to the experts how much sauce should go on stir fry. There are no sauces on the tables. I understand the theory that you shouldn't need sauce on the table. In practice, all four of us needed to add soy sauce. The nice and prompt waiter brought it so there was no problem, but there really should be some soy sauce and salt on the table. The wife did not like the roti bread. She said it was greasy and flavorless. I found it okay. She also warns that the vegetable pakora wasn't good. I didn't try it. If you like this kind of place, it meets expectations. My family stopped in for an early dinner before a show, and had the pleasure of having Fernando as our server. Fernando was perfectly attentive and helpful without being overly intrusive.
