My boyfriend wanted a speakeasy vibe to finish the night out in Chicago, so we headed on over to Three Dots and a Dash! The space is accessible via a "sort of" hidden alley entrance! Once you enter, you are quickly transported to the vibey, island oasis that is promised. There weren't any reservations or tables available, but we stopped into the bar and got lucky with a pair of seats. Our bartender was very social and friendly, even while constantly making drinks for the crowded bar area! We ordered a Mai Tai and a Strawberry Junglebird. Both we are excellent drinks, spirit-forward, and partnered well with theme of the space. Our only qualm was that the Junglebird didn't come dressed up at all...as almost all the drinks on the menu come in specific, themed glassware that adds to ambiance and effect of the experience...but that drink just came in a boring glass cup! It's a hidden speakeasy in an alley, giving the underground vibes. All drinks are tiki drink types. Coconut or fruity elixirs riddle the menu. You can get wine, champaign, or other cocktails if you ask. They aren't advertised though. I ordered the Aloha Felicia with Rum, coconut, pineapple, and lime. It was absolutely tropical and came in this gorgeous metal tiki cup. It was a short cup but wide, so it was a nice amount of drink. The menu also tells you how strong they are, as well. They don't really offer dinners, rather many types of appetizers. We ordered the loaded fries and the crab Rangoon dip. The loaded fries had a Teriyaki, Asian flavor and was quite filling and served beautifully. The crab Rangoon dip was also addictive. The crispy won tons were not greasy and it had another Asian style sauce to accompany the dip, that was a nice compliment to the flavor. When visiting Chicago this is one of the top places I had wanted to try. I'd heard about it for multiple sources on multiple occasions and knew it was one of my top priorities to visit while there. Of the first challenge of this place is finding it. I'm glad I read some reviews to talked about going down the alley and looking for lights because the GPS took me to the front of the building and I had no clue where the place was. After rounding the corner, I saw some lights and proceeded to walk down the alley and found three dots and a dash. When you go inside you, I was greater by a bouncer and then walk down the stairs to the bar. I was quickly greeted by the host that I just told them that I wanted to sit as far? So I can go in and find myself to see here when I had gotten there if the place was a little bit more packed but cleared out after a short while and I sat down and ordered some food and a drink. The bartender who helped me was super personable that I made some recommendations and talked about a few different drinks they had. I want you to make sure eyes picked wisely. I ended up going with their namesake drink three dots and a dash which I thought was really good. And I ordered the chicken bites as an appetizer that came with three sauces That I also enjoyed. I got in on the last night of the prior seasonal menu so I got to try one of the drinks before they came off and had the sweater weather as well. The drink was pretty good and I'm really glad it was recommended. Ed, they also have a merchroom with a bunch of different tiki glasses available. I picked up one of their newer glasses to take home which came on a little box in a nice little gift bag. All in all, I had a great experience here and I would definitely come back if I was in Chicago. If you're into tiki drinks, this is a must stop. Easily one of the most unique and fun spots we visited during our Christmas trip to Chicago. Whether you think of it as a former hidden speakeasy or a full-on hotspot now, it's a must-visit either way. The drinks were incredible... not just delicious, but clearly very thoughtfully crafted, right down to the custom Three Dots & a Dash glassware. And the food? Shockingly good. While the bar has a Clark Street address, true to speakeasy fashion you actually enter through the alley. A long flight of stairs, with walls covered in exotic plant material to set the Tiki mood, leads down to the host area and bar. The main bar is dark and atmospheric, with a lush tropical theme. Booths line three walls, high-top tables fill the center of the room, and a long bar backed by an impressive display of liquor bottles anchors the space. Since we visited in December, the room was decorated with festive silver wreaths, and there was a special menu of holiday cocktails. I ordered the Eggnog Grasshopper, while my husband chose the 1944 Mai Tai. Both drinks were refreshing and delicious, though on the small side. We also shared a Gingerbread Painkiller and an order of Prime Skirt Steak Skewers. The skewers were tender, moist, and full of flavor--absolutely delicious. Because it was my husband's birthday, our pleasant waitress surprised us with complimentary shots of Hot Buttered Rum, served on a charming platter complete with treasure coins and a skull mug bubbling with dry-ice smoke--a very nice touch. The drinks were awesome. I started with the 1962 Tropical Itch which came in this giant clam shell and had mezcal in it. So fun and honestly tasted amazing. I also tried one of their non-alcoholic drinks but asked them to add mezcal and they were happy to do it, which I appreciated. We ended the night with the shotstapus, and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. The shots were solid, but the delivery made it totally worth it. If the drinks weren't so strong I probably could've stayed all night. They do have food if you need to soak things up a bit. I didn't try any, but it looked good. The entrance is in an alley behind a bar. Very unassuming. Then you take the stairs down into the bar/restaurant. So this place actually has two bars in one: The Bamboo Room and Three Dots and a Dash. We tried both, and if you're into tiki vibes, you have to check them out the theming is amazing. We ordered the Three Dots and a Dash and the Saturn Frappe both excellent. The drinks here definitely tasted higher quality and more balanced. Three Dots and a Dash: Next, we went over to the main bar. Still great atmosphere, great drinks we had the Jet Pilot, another Three Dots and a Dash, and some waffle fries (all solid). But honestly, you can tell the Bamboo Room drinks are next-level compared to the main side. Now for the annoying part: When you make a reservation, they charge you ahead of time (about $20 per person), which is supposed to go toward your final tab. At the Bamboo Room, the bartender made sure it was applied no problem. But at the main bar, our server "forgot" to apply the credit. After we paid, we noticed the total seemed high, asked for the receipt, and only then did she admit it and say she'd refund it. Felt kinda sketchy, to be honest. Heads-up: make sure your prepaid credit actually gets applied before you pay the bill. To the owners I get that you're trying to prevent no-shows, but precharging guests and then making them chase down their credit just leaves a bad taste. Maybe just take a card hold instead? If someone no shows charge them something. Overall: Drinks and vibe are awesome, especially in the Bamboo Room. Just watch your bill and you'll have a great time. read more

I had been to three dots and a dash about seven years ago and when planning a trip to Chicago, I set out to find this unique tiki bar to add to our itinerary. The atmosphere is completely fun and immersive of the moment you walk in. It is dark inside with music and you immediately forget it is daylight even if you have a 4 PM reservation (which I highly recommend a reservation). My friends and I ordered nonalcoholic drinks that were completely outstanding and served in a fresh coconut, and they even brought us spoon so we could enjoy the coconut meat. My husband who claims to be a pirate ordered their regular cocktails and loved everyone of them. He even brought some souvenirs back home. You get your ID checked right there and then head downstairs in what is a steep staircase. The lights are low and have red, green and blue lights reflecting off the walls. The stairs are an entrance to two speakeasies. The one on the right as you enter is reservations only and the one on the left is the tiki bar. We walked right in and found seats at the bar or you can reserve a table ahead of time. The tiki bar leans into the tiki, Asian, Pacific Islander and Hawaiian theme. Everything reflects this sorta culture and aesthetics. The menu is the same. We got the: 1962 tropical itch. It wasn't sweet. Which I liked because sugary drinks = a terrible hangover. It comes with mezcal. Three dots and a dash drink. It was a little bit on the sour side. Its base liquor is rum. We spent about a hour here. Got here around 10pm. It was pretty packed. No cover. We didn't have a reservation, but the host kindly let us in as long as we could wrap up our visit within 90 minutes--which was no problem for us. (Next time, we'll definitely make a reservation to enjoy a more relaxed stay.) I ordered the Painkiller, a coconut and rum-based drink that was exactly what I was craving--tropical, smooth, and not overly sweet. My wife ordered a whiskey-based cocktail with passionfruit and lemon, which didn't quite work for her palate. Fortunately, our server was incredibly accommodating and swapped it out for the Painkiller as well--problem solved! We also shared the steak skewer appetizer, which came with lettuce wraps and a flavorful sauce. The lighting was very dark, which made it hard to even read the menu comfortably. They just didn't hit the mark in terms of flavor or presentation. We didn't have a reservation (which is highly recommended on the website) so we ponied up to a ledge but knew that we were only staying for one cocktail. The cocktails match the tiki theme which I don't love in general because they're typically too sweet. However, the ones we ordered we're fairly well balanced and obviously aesthetically pleasing. Amazing spot and a must-visit if in Chicago. We stopped in at 8 on a Saturday which seemed like absolutely perfect timing. Soon as we got in, way more people started showing up and if we were 60-90 seconds later we would not had gotten lucky grabbing a table. I went with a painkiller which was sooooo good. Did not expect it to be blended/frozen but it was so yummy. My girlfriend tried a "three dots and a dash" which was also good but not as much on the sweet/fruity side. It was a bit stronger too. The drinks are nice and strong here so you definitely get your money's worth. We tried the waffle fries and the firecracker popcorn chicken. Fries were good. The popcorn chicken is like an 8 out of 10 on spicy-ness that crawls up on you. The first few bites you're thinking "this isn't spicy at all" and then 5 minutes later, bam, whole mouth is burning. It's not too often you order a "sampler" platter and everything taste good but this was one of those exceptions. The shrimp spring rolls were the best thing on the platter and the pork was a close second.
