I am staying at the hotel and didn't feel like leaving for dinner. So, o walked down through the beautiful lobby to grab some dinner to take to my room. I ordered an extra dirty martini and he made it extra dry. He realized it when I asked for the olives. He then made me another drink. I preserved the steak with Mac and cheese and seasoned veggies. The steak was supposed to be rare. It was medium well. I was too tired to complain when I got up to my room. There was a mushroom sauce on it which had a good flavor. Steak was very average and so overcooked. Steamed veggies were broccolini and carrots. I thought these were delicious. The Mac and cheese was good but not great. All in all, not worth $50. The restaurant is very bright and not very intimate compared to the rest of the hotel.

Came to check out the venue since I reserved a few faculty members to dine here the following Monday. I ordered the State View Red Bread Pudding ($12), which is very dense and tastes nothing like bread pudding, and the Mrs. Wuf's Favorite Color ($11) which didn't impress me at all. The staff it's very nice and the bartender was very knowledgeable about the drunk menu. The ambience is fantastic!

The food we ordered was very good but several things on the menu are not available. Our server made up for the slim menu choices. Nice atmosphere for casual or formal dining.

This is a restaurant off the beaten path and tsucked into the autograph collection Marriott property at NC State It has only been open a couple of months and still going through it's growing pains of training the kitchen as well as the waitstaff and trying to figure out the amount of food for the size of the crowd on any given day The menu is science lab themed with the cocktails coming out with a chemistry oriented approach, while the wine is served in beakers We have eaten here on number of times and enjoyed the appetizers salads as well as the featured main courses We have always had a good overall experience but sometimes the timing of the kitchen between courses can be off just a little bit Very much looking forward to enjoying the space as the weather changes in the restaurant opens up to the outdoor spaces

Burger and fries - DEFINITELY get the fries! Burger got great reviews too

This is the restaurant inside the State View hotel, a Marriott at NC State campus. I didn't expect much from how bright the lights inside were (think cafeteria, bright) and the fake red and white flowers stuck into rocks inside beakers on the table (please do away with those - so tacky) but the service and food were great. Our waitress, Alyssa, was friendly and attentive. The food really was delicious. We had the beer cheese soup (yum - highly recommended), the zucchini chips (pretty much fried zucchini, served with a great fig jam and ranch dressing), nachos and the burger. Definitely get their fries - also amazingly yummy. They serve beer, wine and liquor. They have a cocktail menu with clever drinks and clever names to go with but I stuck to a dirty martini (classic, delicious). The drinks are perhaps high priced for the location - cocktails could probably due with $1-$2 taken off the price since $12-$14 each is what I'd expect in a bigger city - but I don't see them lowering prices. They serve NC State brewed beer as well. While I wouldn't say the ambience would bring me back the food and service might. If you're staying at the hotel definitely give it a try!

I live at the apartment complex down the road from here and have enjoyed strolling over on summer evenings to enjoy a drink and sunset. While the food is mediocre and overpriced, I love their patio and enjoying the weather while sipping on something refreshing. I love the academic theme as well. They also serve howling cow ice cream!

Great place to have a relaxing al fresco dinner with a nice view and I was lucky enough to have good weather as well. I ordered the Queen Anne's Revenge drink which had all my favorite ingredients: peaches, honey, lemon and sparkling wine. It was perfect for this 90 degree weather. Then I ordered two appetizers (interestingly called "Electives" and "Minors" as opposed to "Majors" which are the main course.) Good decision since the portions were huge! I didn't finish it of course but they were very good. I was hoping for more anchovy taste on the caesar salad dressing though... the Pork belly banh mi slider was very good as well. The pork was tender and tasty. I could taste the pickle and the overall combination with carrots, cilantro, mint, sriracha hoisin mayo worked out well. The steamed chinese bun was so soft and fluffy!!! But so filling that I couldn't finish it. The server was very attentive and friendly although coming into the restaurant, I could not find someone to seat me and the first person that I saw and asked for help (maybe the bartender...?) was not as friendly when I obviously was looking to be seated, and I had to ask about getting dinner (i said: "dining in...?" - while looking for a seat... and his response was: "What about it?" And I had to say: "Can I get a seat?" - which i thought was obvious...) If not for that, I would have given the place 5 stars. I also went for breakfast twice. The first morning, Wednesday, Aug 29th, the service was so-so. The lady who served me got me a carafe of coffee but did not bother to pour any into my cup and I did not get a duplicate copy of my receipt. The second morning, Thursday, Aug 30th, the man who served me, served the coffee and poured it into my cup, gave me a duplicate of my receipt (which is standard practice) and even asked if I wanted an extra travel cup to bring back some coffee to my room (which was extraordinarily nice!). So again, if the service was more consistent, I would have given a five star rating. But overall, I highly recommend this restaurant located in The Stateview Hotel in Raleigh North Carolina, tucked away within the campus of NC State University. Come early to grab a nice table in the balcony overlooking the pool, and a glimpse of Lake Raleigh.

Roasted chicken dinner. The pico on top is vampire prevention.

I have been coming here since the hotel first opened. I love the convenience of the restaurant. The food in general is good, not over the top amazing but solid good. I do notice there is a lot of garlic and pickled onions on dishes. Personally I love them especially the pickled onion which adds such a nice pop on the breakfast egg ( red and white). The garlicky flavor is not my fav on the rice/pico in the roasted chicken dish. Did make me vampire resistant tonight after the dinner. Ha! Happy eating.

Was really impressed by the hospitality of the bartender Toulson (spelling?). He was super friendly, knowledgeable, and gave me detailed recommendations. -- The Hamachi Crudo was so bright and light. I really enjoyed the puffed rice on top and the basil ice complemented the dish well. The grapefruit added some nice acidity and the little crunchy bites were the perfect texture contrast. The pieces of fish were large and thick. -- The Manchego-herb Biscuits were awesome. One order comes with four small biscuits. Crust was flaky, the inside was soft and moist, and the flaky salt was the cherry on top. -- The Seared Duck Breast was phenomenal. The duck was juicy and tender and salted well. The skin was thick, sooo flavorful, and melted in your mouth but I would've liked a little more crispiness on the outside. I enjoyed the mix of fresh vegetables and warm cooked vegetables served with the dish. -- The Lemon Yuzu Tart was a nice bright and rich dessert. The tartness comes from the jam on top of the tart but it doesn't overwhelm the dish. The creme brulee style top was a nice touch. The buttermilk ice cream was more on the icier side than creamy. I really enjoyed all the dishes I tried here and am looking forward to my next visit.

If it's a beautiful day, I'd definitely recommend sitting outside instead. Still, the inside has a cozy, laid-back feel that works well. Shoutout to Qua, who was both the hostess and our server. She was welcoming, attentive, and handled everything smoothly, even as a few more parties came in while she was the only one serving at the time. One thing I really appreciated was that she let us know upfront what items were out of stock before we even looked at the menu. That level of transparency is huge and makes the experience so much better. My son ordered a slider with fries from the kids' menu. It comes with just one slider, so I ordered a second, definitely the right call. He enjoyed it, and the fries were cooked well, just a little on the salty side for our taste (ketchup helped balance that out). I had the shrimp tacos. It's packed and perfect portion for lunch. The shrimp, pineapple slaw, and chipotle mayo was a nice mix. The restaurant was clean (including the bathrooms). The location is also a plus, super close to the Art Museum, which makes it a great stop before or after visiting. Overall enjoyable, and I'd come back, especially to try more of the menu and the drinks.

Wow, this might be one of the best restaurants in Raleigh! I stopped in for a business dinner and…read morewas really excited to finally try one of Ashley Christensen's restaurants. Parking can be a bit challenging as you'll either need to find street parking or in a open lot near by. The restaurant itself is located in a historic building that once was a funeral home and also was also a tax practice in a different chapter. The restaurant feels very upscale but there isn't a strict dress code. The kitchen is open as well if yo prefer to sit along the kitchen and watch the chefs cook. When you order you'll have to place everything at the same time but they'll pace it out to your table. For drinks, I ordered the In Gold Blood (Bourbon, amaro, Fino sherry, banana, golden raisin) and the head in the clouds (Vodka, Falernum, strawberry, pistachio). Both drinks were excellent and extremely easy to drink. You'll definitely want to start with the sourdough bread, NC Oysters (Roasted NC oysters, chili butter, preserved lemon gremolata), and fried NC shrimp (Fried NC shrimp, buried garlic aioli, pickled green tomatoes). All of the appetizers were excellent in their own way. The bread and butter just complemented each other so well, the oysters were well balanced and almost seared where they weren't chargrilled but partially still raw, and the fried nc shrimp has a nice contrast of flavor with the pickled green tomatoes and fried shrimp. For the entree we split the Prime-aged Delmonico (ribeye; and was served in a red wine jus, and topped with sea salt and peppercorn). The steak fell apart as you bit into it. For sides, we ordered the crispy potatoes (Crispy potatoes, Italian chili crisp, piquillo peppers) and Brussel sprouts (Embered Brussels sprouts, apples, lardon vinaigrette, almonds). The steak and potatoes were definitely my favorite. The Brussel sprouts were good but a bit on the salad side where they were still a little hard. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake (Basque cheesecake, strawberry compote, olive oil shortbread) and the Sticky Toffee Pudding (Sticky toffee pudding, embered vanilla ice cream, benne seed brittle). The sticky toffee pudding was so warm and was excellent. The cheesecake also had a nice balance of flavor and the strawberry compote combination worked perfectly. This is by far one of my favorite meals I've had in Raleigh and you definitely need to go here if you are in the area.

While the food left me somewhat underwhelmed, the cocktails were exceptional, among the best I've had in recent memory. The standout was the Over/Under, a beet-infused gin take on a Negroni. Absolutely phenomenal. The earthy beet notes were subtle but present, complementing the bitterness of the Campari, the floral qualities of the gin, and just enough sweetness to tie everything together. Every cocktail I tried was excellent, but this was the clear winner. As for the food, it never quite reached the same heights. The beef tartare was the best dish I had all evening. In fact, I found myself enjoying it more on the accompanying sourdough bread than on the rice crisps it was served with, which ultimately justified ordering the bread. The "pickled egg yolk" was an inventive twist, essentially replacing both the raw egg and cornichons found in a traditional French tartare. Clever in concept, but the pickling process seemed to sacrifice some of the creamy richness that the dish could have benefited from. The rice crisp accompaniment is also part of a trend I've noticed at several restaurants and one I'm not particularly sold on. They're usually too brittle to hold much tartare and often end up scattered across the plate. I find they work better crushed into the tartare itself than as a delivery vehicle. The oysters were the biggest disappointment of the meal. Heavily drenched in butter, they felt one-dimensional, with the lemon zest providing the only real counterbalance. To be fair, this is likely intended as a shared dish, and as a solo diner consuming the entire portion myself, the richness may have become more pronounced than intended. The gnocchi delivered deep, satisfying flavor and were impressively light, though perhaps a touch too soft for my personal preference. As I glanced over at the roast chicken being served to the couple next to me, a sense of ordering regret began to creep in. What ultimately elevates Death & Taxes is its hospitality. The service was genuinely five-star. Every dish was explained thoughtfully as it was delivered, and the bar team struck that perfect balance of attentiveness and conversation, making a solo diner feel completely welcome. Their warmth and professionalism raised this experience from a three-star meal to a four-star evening. And they are all 5 star.

We went on New Year's Eve and arrived earlier than our reservation time but were quickly accommodated despite how busy it was. Service was excellent throughout the night. Upon arrival they took our coats and provided a ticket, and the attention to detail continued all evening. Our waiter was wonderful and went the extra mile to explain the specials in detail. They swapped silverware between courses and cleared even the smallest crumbs from the table -- the kind of thoughtful touches you expect at a higher-end restaurant. The food was outstanding. We shared the Cajun ribeye, which they split for us, and was absolutely amazing and full of flavor. The pork belly appetizer and salad were also excellent. My son had the duck and loved it. One note: my mom ordered the seafood paella without seafood. The staff did warn that it would still have a fish-based flavor, and it ended up being very fishy and not great. In hindsight, it would have been better to choose a dish that didn't require modification. The price remained the same despite removing the seafood, which is understandable but still worth noting. Overall, the pricing felt fair given the quality of the food, the setting, and the standout service. This is a beautiful, memorable dining experience and I would definitely return and recommend it.
