As a foodie from the Bay Area who's been spending more time in the Southeast for work, I've been on a bit of a personal mission to understand and appreciate Southern cuisine. It's been an interesting journey--because while I absolutely respect the tradition, my palate has definitely evolved over the years toward lighter, more elevated, visually beautiful food. That said, sometimes you just have to lean in and experience the classics. Tupelo Honey had been on my list for a while, so during a recent work trip to Raleigh-Durham, I decided to check it off. The location is in a very nice, upscale area--one of those shopping districts where, if you see a Whole Foods nearby, you know the neighborhood is going to be polished, safe, and easy to navigate. Parking was simple in a lot across the street, and since I had a reservation, I was seated quickly on the patio, which was lovely and comfortable. For starters, I ordered the "biscuits for a cause," which is a nice touch knowing the proceeds support employee relief and development funds. They were warm and classic Southern biscuits--exactly what you'd expect. For my entrée, I went with the honey-dusted fried chicken (dark meat), a true Southern staple. It was well prepared, flavorful, and satisfying, especially if you're in the mood for something hearty and traditional. I also tried a cocktail called "The Debutante," which was pleasant and refreshing, and finished the meal with the butter pecan cheesecake for dessert. Overall, the meal was good--solid, reliable Southern comfort food--but if I'm being completely honest, it wasn't particularly memorable for me. I was traveling for work and dining on a per diem, so it checked the box for a dependable dinner in a convenient location. As a larger regional chain, it feels a bit like a rite of passage when you're spending time in the Southeast--something you try once to understand the landscape. This spot was really high on my list to visit during a recent trip to Raleigh, and after a few family members co-signing how great it is, we made it a point to stop by before heading to the airport. I'm disappointed to say that, at least in our experience, it was decent but didn't merit the rave review. We made a reservation for noon on Saturday, which I'm grateful we did since there were tons of people waiting when we arrived. We were seated promptly in a comfortable booth and our waitress was welcoming in getting us settled with menus, water and giving us time to review our options (and giggle at the "Bless Your Heart" glasses). The vibes were lively with a full dining room, great decor, and so many seating options. The menu lineup was plentiful - so many amazing options to choose from! We selected Sweet Potato Pancakes, Smothered Biscuit Sandwich, and their famous Fried Chicken with honey dust. Based on the excitement surrounding this restaurant, I can't tell if our expectations were too high, or if it was an off day - but we all agreed that everything was just ok. The pancakes were flavorful and fluffy but were served without the spiced pecans (we had to remind them); the biscuit sandwich was smothered in milk gravy which was too far too salty for me, so I tried to remove what I could; the famous chicken was disappointing - I couldn't even taste the "honey dusting" and it just tasted like regular fried chicken. My favorite item was the crispy Brussels which were seasoned and cooked perfectly - I enjoyed savoring each one! You always run the risk when visiting a raved-about spot, everyone has their own preferences. We're glad we stopped to try it and maybe we'll give it another shot next time. read more

Went to Tupelo Honey after the city of oaks race this past weekend. (Can't emphasize enough to make a reservation on days like this.) We were actually sat a few minutes early, which is rare. My roasted chicken was almost dry seems like it was cooked early in the day and reheated when I ordered it. Mac and cheese wasn't good. Wife shrimp and grits were warm. The crispy potatoes came out of a bag and dropped in the deep fryer. Not sure if that's just here or they change the crispy potatoes everywhere. They used to be smashed potatoes cooked til crispy not frozen potatoes out of a bag. My kids who looked waffles said it was just ok. Didnt return anything because the kitchen was busy and we didn't want to wait again. Drinks were good. Probably won't go back. Just wait till I visit Ohio or South Carolina to go. Server was nice and nervous because he knew the kitchen was in a bad place and he was worried about his tip. We tipped him 22% because he has nothing to do with the kitchen. read more

I love the $20 off $40 during my birthday! I've always been a big fan of TH, but this was my first time at the Raleigh location. Parking is not easy to find, I had to park down the road in the BOA lot on a Tuesday afternoon. The restaurant was kept quite cold on a cloudy day around 80 degrees. I took a seat at the empty bar and the bartender was a rather friendly dude. He did a great job keeping my beverage glasses filled without me even asking. I ordered the steak and eggs. 8 ounces of sliced beef topped with a little aioli along with some fried potatoes and two eggs. I asked for the steak medium rare and the eggs over medium, and both were cooked as I asked them. Very nice taste to the steak too, well seasoned and a nice beefy flavor. I didn't love the potatoes so much, some were bigger than others so they were cooked to different levels. For the road, I got a 3 egg omelet with bacon, cheddar, and salsa verde. Great flavor, the only thing that was weird was the bacon was one strip. I would have chopped the bacon up so I could have bites of it throughout. read more

I love a restaurant that serves brunch all week, and on my most recent weekday visit I enjoyed their fried pickle appetizer and the cobb salad with fried chicken. My husband went with the fried chicken and biscuits. I also had an iced matcha latte which was perfection. All of the food was delicious. The pickles were well- seasoned and I loved that they are a bit peppery, and the salad was overflowing with beautiful lettuces, tomatoes, crispy bacon, and hard boiled eggs. My only criticism is that I felt the chicken could have used a bit more salt. Absolutely fantastic- I was in town this weekend for Dreamville and my bestfriend and I stopped here for happy hour and some food. Let's start with our server, Hannah. I am not lying when I say I have been thinking about those Brussels sprouts since we left the restaurant Friday night (and today is Monday lol). They were a lot thinner than I anticipated so gave more of a fried pickle "chip" vibe but that was okay because they have the best crunch. We tried a few drinks- Peach don't kill my vibe, so fresh & so green green, and I THINK the citrus got real. But it was purple and delicious haha. The so fresh and so green green was just that- so fresh! It reminds me of a drink I had on a carnival cruise a few years back that used fresh cucumber. For entrees we both got the shrimp & chicken gumbo. I will say the flavor here seemed a bit one note to me. Don't get me wrong, it WAS good but, for gumbo I expected some deep flavors that bounced off my tongue and I just didn't get that. Still delicious either way but I wanted a bit more from the gumbo personally. My bestfriend thought it was absolutely fantastic. This is a cute and quaint area filled with restaurants, apartments, and shops. There is street parking in the front of the restaurant and space in the parking deck located behind the restaurant. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by the host. I dined around 5 pm so there wasn't a wait for a table. I chose to sit at the bar on this particular occasion. The bartender was friendly and the bar was extremely clean. Unaware of the happy hour specials, I initially planned to order from the dinner menu but changed my mind after seeing another customer's food, asking the bartender about it. What I Ordered: Cast Iron Pimento Cheese and Tortilla Chips- Creamy, dreamy, cheesy, well seasoned. The tortillas chips were crispy and although thicker than store bought potato chips, were a nice contrast to the soft dip. Loaded Crispy Potatoes- Outside of a restaurant I dined at in Milan, these were the most well cooked crispy potatoes that I have ever had. Perfectly crunchy on the outside, soft and buttery in the inside. They normally come with pimento cheese, but I ordered them with cheddar cheese, since I already had the pimento cheese dip. Appropriate amount of bacon atop the potatoes and the scallions were fresh and crunchy. The sour cream drizzle was a nice touch. Mixed greens salad-Fresh and refreshing!
