Why is this model not in my city of Greensboro, NC? In Greensboro, the city council makes homeless hostel architecture so the homeless can not lay down, etc. A place at the Table is doing God's work. I've never seen anything like this and feel like this model needs to spread everywhere. Breakfast was GREAT: eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. Great volunteers and a wonderful idea to boost humanity among us all. Had no idea it was a mission based restaurant until I arrived and put 2 and 2 together. I thought the rumors were too good to be true, but nope. Not only does A Place at The Table have an incredible mission, the food and service are also really good. We visited on a weekday morning for breakfast. Before 9 am there wasn't much of a line, but after 9 am it picks up. A welcoming volunteer greeted us at the door and introduced us to the concept. We could order at the counter and pay the suggested rate (~$10-12/meal), pay a reduced rate (at least $3), purchase a meal token to give away ($10), and/or make a donation. Another option is to volunteer for an hour for a free meal. We paid the suggested rate for breakfast (dine-in) and lunch (to-go). Cream and sugar for coffee is available near the counter. Everything else was brought to our table. All the volunteers we interacted with were incredibly friendly and efficient. They checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed and removed empty plates as we finished. We all enjoyed each of the items ordered. I especially enjoyed the spicy cheddar biscuit paired with perfectly cooked eggs and avocado with pickled onions. The chicken salad sandwich was also really good. You get a decent portion of chicken salad and a side salad. I chose the pepper jelly vinaigrette for the salad and loved it. Restrooms: two restrooms are available. One was closed for cleaning and the other was occupied throughout our meal. Parking: metered street parking available out front. Overall, we had a positive experience here and highly recommend this restaurant to others! read more

"Pay What You Can in Downtown Raleigh" Came here on a busy Saturday morning at 10am. There were a few tables outside, but it was HOT, so we went in. A nice lady was standing by the door to explain how things worked-- order at the counter and get a number, but it's "pay what you can". They have suggested prices, and a strongly suggested minimum price. But she noted there are options to work for a while if that's a better alternative. And she noted we can "pay it forward" for another later guest, which is done via tip. (That last one scared me a little bit-- I hope the staff are still getting a living wage if the tips are going to paying it forward...) My friend and I both got the avocado toast. I also got a basil lemonade (I think?) drink, and she got an iced coffee. We got a number and sat at a table. There's a decent amount of seating, and I was surprised tables were available. We sat at a community table but didn't really chat with the others there. Food came out in maybe 10 minutes or so. VERY good toast-- the eggs were exactly as we wanted them, good fresh avocado, and good bread. The basil lemonade was amazingly refreshing, too. The whole place was good and relatively clean (including restroom). And they bus the tables for you when you're done. This was exactly what we needed, delicious food, as good a price as one can imagine, and a great setting. Check it out!!! read more

This is an amazing restaurant. Had some of the best waffles I've ever had here. Craft coffees are excellent as well. What I did not know before walking in (based on recommendations) was that this restaurant is Community driven. It's a beautiful thing to see and a model I'd love to see more of. Service is excellent. Love the business model here! It's really cool that you can pay what you can, and also there's an option to help in the back if you can't afford your meal. Being from out of town we wanted to try all the biscuits we could get our hands on over the weekend we were here. The cheddar biscuit sandwich proved a more sturdy and savory biscuit, while the regular biscuit was flaky and buttery. Both were really good! I appreciated that they had vegetarian options as I'm trying to eat less meat :) My only complaint was that the syrup they put in the latte for cinnamon flavor, or the almond milk used added slight oiliness to the top of our latte which made it not sit well with our stomachs. Might just be that we aren't used to processing that type of ingredient. read more

I have had the opportunity to eating at A Place at the Table prior to the pandemic and after and I will say that the concept has stayed the same and the food continuously gets better and better. If you have never eaten here I would highly recommend it because it is an opportunity to giveback while you enjoy delicious food! My family and I normally go to APATT on the weekends. We love their sausage biscuits, pop tarts and anything sweet that they make. On this particular visit I ordered their: Huevos Rancheros VG GF Fried Corn Tortillas, Black Beans, Sunny-Side Up Eggs (2), Ranchero Sauce, Cilantro, Lime Crema Vanilla Latte I ended up paying for both things at full price but I had the option to pay what I could or help wash dishes which I thought was amazing! The restaurant is cleaned and the staff is great! On this particular day there was a lot of foot traffic and people were coming in and out. The turkey and chicken are fresh, not the processed deli meats. The food is great. It had a home made fresh taste. I was greeted warmly at the door. The place is buzzing with people. Finally made it to Raleigh's "pay what you can" cafe located downtown. I visited in a Sunday morning so parking was easy and service was prompt. It's a small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. There's plenty of food options for various dietary preferences. I participated in the relaunch of their walk club hosted on Sundays at 9am and had a fabulous time. A volunteer led us around downtown for ~3 miles and we returned back to the cafe for drinks and food. Would def come back for this event! I arrived here around 12:35pm on a Sunday afternoon for brunch with my friend. It was very busy. There is a pay for parking lot across the street. I'd suggest downloading ParkMobile if you don't already. It was $5.95 for an hour. Once inside, there was a person by the door who explained the concept. Their mission is "A Place at the Table provided community and good food for all regardless of meals". Payment options: -Pay suggested price -Pay less than the suggested price ($3 or more for entree and a side/pastry/drink OR pay less than $3 for any side/pastry/drink) -Volunteer in the cafe for one hour for your meal -Pay it forward by buying a $10 place card to give to someone in the community or for someone who comes in an cannot afford meal We waited in line for 15 minutes prior to ordering. My friend and I both did the build you own breakfast. I got 1/2 buttermilk waffle, bacon, and eggs. I got bacon jam as my condiment. I also got a side of buttermilk biscuit. My friend the 1/2 buttermilk waffle, grits, and bacon. I paid the suggested price for the meal and left a tip (that is considered a donation to the cause). They have outside seating and an upstairs sitting area. We sat upstairs. There were 3 tables. The steps upstairs has writing that says "All are welcome". We received our food 5 mins later. The bacon was so crispy and delicious! The eggs were tasty too; I didn't have to add anything to them. My waffle was awesome, especially with the bacon jam and syrup. I added my remaining bacon jam to my biscuit and it was great. No complaints at all! I would most definitely return! I noticed so many volunteers! They were on it too! 4.5 stars. The food here is really good and FAST. The cooks are amazing and I watched them for a while as I was waiting in line to order (more on that below) The rate which they must have to prepare food for the amount of patrons is like superhero level. Came on a weekday around 1pm and there was no line. Wanted to take my husband back so brought him on a Saturday at 11 and there were about 18 people in line ahead of me. I figured we're already here, how long can it take for 18 people to order? Well, it wasn't great. Do not come here on a weekend if 1) you are hungry 2) you have young kids 3) you have somewhere to be.. we had all 3 of this lovely combination and let me tell you, it was definitely not fun. At one point someone announced the kitchen was on pause... umm, okay. I ended up standing in line to order for nearly 50 minutes. I understand this place is quite unique and absolutely love what they are doing in the community. But 50 minutes is a pretty absurd amount of time just to order. They had one person taking orders. I think the line would help move quicker if 2 people were taking orders. And of course some people can be so annoying, it's like you had 10-40 minutes to decide what to order yet once they finally arrive to the front and get their moment to order, they are still deciding..?? ‍ This place is really chaotic and one volunteer serving food seemed overwhelmed as she had to navigate thru the ordering line to deliver food on the other side. She started having some attitude with people in line, it's like, um it's not our fault. The food came out within maybe 5 minutes after ordering! I basically went to wash my hands and when I sat down the food was there. Props to how fast the food actually comes out. So minus half a star for how long it took to order and the staff seemingly having zero regard for anyone's time. But obviously many stars for how a place at the table serves the community and the food is fast, hot, delicious, and reasonably priced for all. read more

This adorable cafe near the convention center serves up lovely food for a good cause. There's someone at the door to greet you and explain how their business model works. I'm new to this pay what you can restaurant but it seems to work. Line was long at midday but it moved. The staff was very friendly and the food came out quickly. Eggs were spot on and the biscuit with the bacon Jan was very good. Although I didn't have any the baked goods looked really good especially the cinnamon rolls. Pricing is not bad at all. I really appreciate the purpose of this place. The food was very good, but the spirit of this place and the people there is even better. Offering flexible payment for people who may be food insecure and allowing options like paying full price, volunteering for food, or paying what you're able to pay vs the full price sets this place a part from anywhere we went while in Raleigh. The name really describes the environment and the thought that went into the execution. While we were there we saw several volunteering for food and it felt good to pay full price and support such a powerful community movement. But don't get it twisted the food is also on point! We got huevos rancheros, a buffalo chicken sandwich, coffee and tea and everything was delicious. So not only are they looking out for the community it's serving up excellent food! Seating is available, it's a small store front and it stayed full but the food came out in short order. A Place At The Table is a non-profit, pay what you can cafe, where everyone is welcome to come and dine. They have it set up where you can pay for your meal in full; pay at least three dollars; volunteer for an hour; or you can use a Place Card (token) for your meal. When I entered I was asked if I had been to the cafe before and shown the menu and where to order. I noticed that the prices were very reasonable for the selections. At the register, if you pay it forward there is no tip option. But I was told that if you do not pay it forward it is an option to tip and you can pay it forward that way. After you order you are given a number and when you beverage and food are ready a volunteer brings it to your table. The idea of the non profit was to give a choice of what patrons can eat. You can order breakfast or lunch here at all hours. I went with the breakfast platter and got a half waffle; scrambled eggs and a biscuit. It was a lot of carbs but I wanted to try the biscuit and the 1/2 waffle was great. We sat in the side with the cash register but the other room is so colorful so I want to sit in there next time. read more

I saw a table with a couple workers/volunteers giving out coffee to other volunteers. I also ordered a chai tea which was delicious! I enjoyed my sandwich, and I love to see community involvement. Mostly sandwiches and other faster type choices. You stand in line to order, they give you a number and you wait. They will bring the food to the table. I had a turkey sandwich and she had a chicken salad sandwich. Both were very good. The name refers to their practice of allowing those folks who can't pay for a meal to have "a place at the table". People can pay forward a meal for a person or family who can't afford something otherwise. So the mix of people in the restaurant is dramatic. From homeless to business people looking for lunch. Because of this the place gets a little chaotic - lots of people waiting for food, people hanging outside, etc. just understand that when coming. Because of the pay-what-you-can business model, you can pay for your meal in one of four ways 1) pay the suggested price 2) pay less than the suggested price ($3 or more gets you an entree plus a side, pastry, or drink; less than $3 gets only a side, pastry ,or drink. 3) volunteer for one hour for your meal 4) pay it forward by buying one or more place cards for $10 each or adding a tip which counts as a donation towards furthering the mission of providing community and good food to all, regardless of their means. With the New menu, I personally recommend the Beefy Grilled Cheese or the chicken & waffles. If you get the Beefy Grilled Cheese, you have to get the Sweet Potato Tots as a side.
