Maybe we came on a bad night however the food was okay, Mac and cheese tasted scorched , the shrimp and grits wasn't that tasteful. I went to Big Easy tonight with a party of 5. I do not see myself coming back again. There was a private party going on at the same time, and maybe this explains the exceptionally slow service. The wait staff did look like they were working diligently, but it took a very long time for them to even take out order and even longer for our food to arrive. Once the food came, things were ok but the food left a lot to be desired. Someone in my party had the etouffee and commented on the fact that it lacked seasoning. I had the Jambalaya pasta and was pleasantly surprised in the sausage in the dish as it had great flavor, but the pasta sauce itself was lacking. The portions were good and the value for the money was there in that respect. We didn't get any alcoholic beverages just fountain drinks. The location is central downtown, so parking it hard. I enjoyed this place! Spacious, not too loud, good drinks, and good food. I stopped by on a Friday night as I wandered downtown Raleigh. I was pointed in the direction of The Big Easy and was not disappointed. I had a French 75 and it was tasty and the flavor was not overpowered by the lemon juice. I also had a seafood platter and seafood chowder to go. Both were flavorful and good portions. They also had a live band setting up about 10p as they are open until 2a. This place could definitely use work. First of all, the place smells like a combination of weed and cigarettes; this makes the experience unpleasant. The ribeye and cheeseburger could use a bit more flavor, though the fries were good! I'll give it that. Came here on a Friday night. I made a reservation online, however, i was a little late yet they still honored my reservation which was good. They do karaoke on Fridays so if you're looking for music and a good time, but nothing too extreme, this is the place to go. It is pretty dark in there at night as it turns into more of an event space so it's good for that type of ambiance. Whether you want to go on a date or enjoy your friends. It is downtown Raleigh, so there is only street parking. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She was new so she didn't know about everything on the menu but she was still super helpful. Had the Creole with Crawfish simmered in spicy creole sauce over seasoned rice. This was excellent, though the Crawfish were a bit overpowering. The service today left much to be desired: waitress looked miserable. Did not smile or speak the entire time I was there. "Ready?" was all I got out of her. Came back today for the Etoufee. Sat at the bar. Bar tender was friendly, attentive and efficient. The Etoufee was excellent. The buttery sauce balanced the Crawfish perfectly. Would definitely recommend the place. Walked in Sunday for brunch reservations with friends. The entire place was empty. Ghost town empty. We were the only people in the entire place. Not a good sign. We were promptly seated and while we waited we overheard one of the male waitstaff/kitchen staff talking loudly to their coworker and dropping multiple F-words and R-words. I was kind of shocked but dude just kept going on. talking about people of different races in a derogatory manner. My friend & I needed an early dinner, she been here before and told me this place was great. They weren't busy and limited staff during slow times. Amanda was amazing tho! I've been to The Big Easy a few times and always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. However, this time was different. I went later in the evening and they offered a "late night menu" only. The restaurant was not crowded. There was 1 larger table leaving and maybe 3 other tables with 2 people at each. Only 2 people at the bar. I saw at least 6 employees in the front. Caesar salad 5/5 Pimento cheese balls 2/5 Fries seafood platter 3/5 The server was not attentive. The server took awhile to take my order. Took awhile to check back in. And took awhile to bring the food. Which, ultimately, lead to me having lukewarm food. I told the server all items could come out at the same time. The server didn't listen so things came out one by one. The pimento cheese balls came out room temperature. Caesar salad was next. Which was good because was suppose to be cold. Seafood platter was carrying temps. Fish was hot, shrimp and oysters lukewarm, fries cold. The restaurant was open for another 2 hours but all servers, employees, and bartender seemed more concerned with cleaning up and chatting. On 2 separate occasions, dishes were dropped with food splatters at my feet. The bartender also dropped glasses that shattered as well. read more

I visited and ordered from their late night menu after 11:30 p.m. Staff was friendly and kind as we were seated immediately. We were seated near the bar and DJ DVS was spinning throwback Hip Hop & R&B. He is excellent. He didn't play a bad song. I decided on the catfish platter from their late night menu with a side house salad. I paired it with a old fashioned bourbon cocktail. My friend ordered jerk wings and fried pimento cheese balls. They were delicious. Our waitress worked hard at bussing and serving tables. She was overwhelmed with work due to the lack of staff. Despite this, our food arrived quickly given the time of night. 5 stars?? Yep and just to tell you how much I love the service, food and ambiance of this restaurant I dined here twice within 3 days lol. The staff is amazing and the owner Steve is just as awesome! I emailed Steve a couple of weeks back to plan the holiday luncheon for my team (17 guests) and without hesitation he was able to accommodate us and place us on the books. Well my niece was trying to find a nice restaurant to celebrate her bday but the place she had in mind was super booked. We gave her a few options and then I remembered The Big Easy (she loves New Orleans). I called to make reservations (party of 9) the same day and once again Steve and his staff came through! Our table was set up and our server was super friendly and attentive. My family really enjoyed themselves and stated the food was delicious. Bc it was her bday she received beignets and she was really excited to try them. Matter of fact she was hesitant to share (lol)! The decor is beautiful and modern. I was in Raleigh for a work conference, and on a weeknight after 8:30pm there didn't seem to be too many options other later in the evening. Some colleagues and I looked up Big Easy which is a Bar with a Southern style kitchen. We jointly share the fried alligator bites which was my first time eating alligator. I hate to say it but it does taste like chicken. I ordered a seafood platter which was a fried platter of goodness including catfish, shrimp and other items. It was pretty good but still pretty heavy (it was deep fried, I knew what I was getting into), so in addition to the included side of greens and coleslaw I got a side salad to try to make myself feel better. I also had a cocktail, an old fashioned, which was pretty solid, not too sweet. In addition to the main bar area which is setup for live music, they had an upstairs which was taken for a private event and we got sat in a big room with some additional tables. What could improve, Customer service and quality control! Another piss poor experience in downtown Raleigh and a place I would not recommend to everyone avoid. Here's why, the service was horrible. I don't know if the D team was on or what, but it was Bad! Lastly, I bit into an oyster and bit down on a piece of shell or some debris, which left me thinking I had broken a molar. When I told the bartender, she simply stated," At least you know it's fresh!" I'm like, what!? I'm obviously in discomfort and pain. And I am concerned that I have chipped, a molar or something. I wouldn't order again to try something else but I give them a 4/5. I ordered the half shrimp half oyster po boy and it was a 3.5/5. The oyster and shrimp were fried well but the seafood fried was the star it didn't have anything unique or even a solid seasoning going. It was good but nothing spectacular and nothing more than I'd expect from a regular spot not a Cajun focused restaurant. Would have loved to see the flavors shine through more. Also most of the food was lukewarm. We arrived to a near empty spot close to opening and it never got busy so cold food is not it. Beignets were a 1/5. Would NOT order again. They were thin, dense, all unevenly shaped, almost cracker like and loaded with powdered sugar. By my assessment they were burnt. $5 mimosas and a nice interior will probably bring me back but if you're coming to be wowed by cajun cuisine maybe try some items I didn't. read more

Rice, rice, and more rice! If you like rice, this might be the place for you. I had The Taste of Louisiana and the 3 "bowls" had lots of rice and not much else. Rice and NO flavor. The gumbo looked like rice in milk gravy, not the dark copper penny color I'm used to getting in restaurants in Louisiana. Tiny gator bites were very, very salty. She-crab soup was tasty, as well as the muffin and oysters, tiny also, but I guess that can't be helped. Prices were good for the food I should have been served, quite expensive for rice!
