I've eaten Jamaican cuisine for a large portion of my travels and by far this has been the most disappointing experience I've had. I absolutely love Jamaican and I know good Jamaican when I see it and I'm sorry folks, this is not it. I am ashamed to have come here twice (against several people's suggestions). For starters, the food quality is very poor. The food is not prepared in traditional Jamaican style. For instance, their oxtail are in a blackish-brown stew that very oily and very bland in taste. Not to mention, they are not cooked with butter beans. The Jerk chicken is hit or miss. You are more likely to get a spoon full of scraps that's a mixture of a lot of bones, griddle, and skin. I must say, the jerk sauce is great. If they run out of Jerk, they will likely give you Jerk wings which do not look appealing, at all. You are then left with curry goat or fish which did not look appealing either. I was most disappointed with the Rice and Cabbage. For starters, there are two types of rice. Jamaican Peas & Rice is traditionally cooked with parboil (Uncle Ben's) rice with peas and coconut milk. Without a doubt they are using Jasmine/Long Grain which comes out very sticky which is how their rice is. And lastly, their cabbage was awful. BONE DRY. Not an ounce of moisture. Cabbage should be soft (not slimy) with sherries carrots, onion, and green pepper. But this did not have anything. I couldn't get over how try it was. "Rude and to the point" is how I describe the staff. Music is EXTEMELY loud and if sounds like 3,000 people are in the back of the restaurant chatting up a storm. Very unprofessional. On top of the very loud music and their conversation, it was hard to order. Lastly, CHECK YOUR TOTAL. Their means comes in three sizes (S, M, L) and they are all at a different price point. I ordered a large Jerk Chicken for $11.77 and at the register almost paid $15.00. Not to mention on time I was over changed on my card, the gentlemen had to give me back $10.09 from the register. To sum this up, I am very disappointed. I love supporting locally owned restaurant businesses as it gives me an opportunity to give my money to those in my community, especially a black own business. However, I refuse to give one last find to this place. There has to be a serious intervention if these folks are going to stay open. For starters, it has to be a professional environment where customers feel comfortable eating at your establishment. One little thing can throw someone completely off. Secondly, Jamaican dishes require a lot of time and prep. Prep the food correctly so that you do both be to 'cut corners' for the sake of time. It shows on your food quality. Seeing that we didn't have a lot of time, we decided to share a plate, which was more than enough. We had the white rice, jerk chicken, sweet plantains and beef patties. The jerk chicken was soooo spicy, but good. The man behind the counter suggested we try a Jamaican drink and skip the all American coke. We got a grapefruit drink, which had a nice fizz, but was nothing compared to a coke. The beef patties were very good. We use to get them from somewhere else, but stopped once we discovered they were not fresh. These were pretty fresh and not overtly spicy, which we did't mind, but after the jerk chicken, mild flavor was ok by us. The food here is very fresh and the place is beyond clean. The food here is great, I stopped in for a quick lunch and couldn't believe how tasty the food was for a quick cafeteria style Jamaican place! The sweet plantains were perfectly cooked, the macaroni and cheese was probably the best I've ever had, the jerk wings fell off the bone and were seasoned perfectly, and the side of green beans were perfectly cooked and seasoned also. I planned on eating this at home but ended up finishing the plate before I got home, I should have taken a picture of how massive the plate of food was for $13.09 but I ate it before I had a chance! This restaurant is a hidden gem of Providence with a friendly staff and great tasting food! The pricing for boxes is great offering a meat (ranging from ox to goat), a vegetable, and one of three rices, all for a more than reasonable price. The star of their menu surely lies in the Jerk Chicken Wings that are without a doubt, the BEST wings I have EVER had. The spiciness is perfect, not too hot adding just enough heat and even more flavor, and the meat falls right off the bone. To quench your thirst I would recommend one of their four home made beverages, especially the pineapple ginger.
