How is their spinach? It's my favorite African dish and I'm very particular with how I like it.

Well, if you have very specific expectations, you may be disappointed if this version if it doesn't match your memory. But, my husband and I both loved Deddeh's version of this dish, which reminded us of a village version we've had in ivory Coast.

I ordered plantains, dry rice with fried fish, okra sauce and rice, 2 giant chicken drum sticks, and I tried the fufu with cassava leaf.

We wanted a good dinner tonight so we stopped by Suya Joint around 5:30 and had no trouble finding a table. I'd also like to give a shoutout to our waitress who was incredibly friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and accommodating. She's one of the main reasons why we keep coming back. She even came over when our food was put down to make sure we knew exactly what we were eating and had to do it. I've worked with people of Ghanian and Nigerian descent so I do know what good African food tastes like, and this place is one of the best. Tonight I ordered the taushe with fufu and was very happy with it! The fufu tastes great, a little sticky but I enjoy the texture and think it works great for dipping. The taushe had great flavor, was very filling, and was seasoned expertly. My only minor critique is that some of the pieces of my beef were large which made it a challenge to eat inside the stew. But it's a dish that I definitely recommend to anyone. My mango juice was also very tasty and I enjoyed the whole experience once again. Prices are on the higher side but I never mind paying for quality food.

Out of the cuisines that I've tried the least, Nigerian cuisines is the one that has always peaked my curiosity as it plays a significant role in the food of the South. It emphasizes bold flavors and contributed to the creation of what we know as Soul Food in the US, and shows the culinary heritage of the African Diaspora. The diversity in the country is also massive due to not only the land size but also from an insane number of different ethnic groups speaking over 500 languages. This uniquely Nigerian diversity (no other country even comes close to this) contributed to a very unique plethora of flavors and expression of food that one could only begin to comprehend through words and pictures. Comprehension as such can only come with experiencing the different cuisines first hand. So while walking along downtown Providence before heading back to Boston, I came across Suya Joint and was excited to see a traditional West African option here! They weren't opened yet at that moment so I lingered in the immediate vicinity until I had my opportunity to walk through those doors! After all, I've been wanting to try more Nigerian food to understand their flavors better. The moment I walked in as their doors opened, I fell in love with their decor. It was clean, artful, and representative of the culture in a unique way. What further enhanced the experience shortly after were the patrons who came in one after the other. I would overhear different tables have conversations with the server detailing their African ancestry. And by the time I was finished eating, there were at least nine African nations represented inside. As for the food, since I was still very new to this cuisine, I came with a very open mind willing to try anything and everything. Our server recommended the African dinner so I could easily sample their most popular dishes. I decided to add their unique meat to it by ordering "Orishirishi" (translates as "variety"), which included tripe and cow feet, to further enhance the experience. All I can say as the food came was this was definitely a culinary experience that finished this weekend beautifully. I'm in love with the cuisine and now want to come back and try more items on their menu. Thankfully, they have a location in Boston as well so I wouldn't need to drive back there just for the food. The Egusi stew, which is one of their most popular items, was tonguegasmically good. My eyes rolled with each taste. It awoken my soul and made me feel alive again. The Jollof Rice here shamed every other version of it I've had in the past...like they were not even good enough to be called copycats. And the Orishirishi? Epically good. It was so rich, so flavorful, so GOOD that I completely plowed through it like my life depended on it. What is this madness? Where have I been my whole life? Whatever it is...I have to come back to Suya Joint again soon - either here or the one in Boston. I just have to have this food again. BEST FIND in 2026 so far! Definitely recommend a visit!

I loved the family feel! Joel mixed up delicious drinks for us. We had espressRo martinis, pain killers, old fashions, and wine. Everyone loved their cocktails. For food, we tried most of the snacks/shareables: Cornbread - dense and delicious Meat skewers with pepper sauce - quite the kick, but definitely a favorite Lasagna bites - savory and flavorful Mac and cheese bites - excellent comfort food Fried chicken - the meat falls right off the bone Fried plantains - sweet with an optional kick Everything was served hot out of the oven and we got to enjoy our food while appreciating gentle music from a vocalists and keyboardist. Her voice was amazing and not too overbearing for dinnertime conversations. Joel was an excellent host, server, mixologist - you name it. He made you feel at home and everything was served to perfection. We will be back!

JoRo offers Liberian and Soul food and at the time of this posting, they were only doing online orders through Toast. The space was still being worked on with the bar and dance floor on the main floor and a cozy upper level section with bar and seating area. While I was in the hood, I was going to stop for pizza, but then I spotted a new place called JoRo. I parked the vehicle on the street and walked up to JoRo, which was empty. The owner was sitting behind the bar and informed me they were only doing takeout online orders. I took a peek at the online menu and chose two selections including the Meat Lovers Lasagna Bite ($15 plus tax) and the Grilled Plantain & Smoked Fish Pepper Sauce ($12 plus tax), The food took about 20 minutes to be ready to go, both selections packed in one container. The grilled plantains with the smoked fish pepper dipping sauce was pretty good. The Meat Lovers Lasagna Bite was actually a good sized heavy piece of lasagna layer with ground meat, cheeses, soft noodles and smothered in a thick red sauce. After taking a few bites of the lasagna along with some of the black pepper sauce, the good flavors quickly became very hot and burning, almost like consuming capsaicin. They went overboard with the spiciness in the black pepper sauce. I enjoy spicy foods, but for this meal, I needed to drink some cold water and enjoyed the rest of the lasagna and plantains in smaller portions over three meals. Other than the over the top peppery flavor from the black pepper sauce, I would return here when the JoRo restaurant and bar is fully opened for dine-in service.

I've had their jasmine milk matcha and the salted cookie butter matcha. Both drinks are DELICIOUS! I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order from suis. On pop-up days, suis usually offers a free item with purchase for the first 12 customers so get in line early. It is definitely worth the wait! All the items are limited quantities so they do run out. Be sure to get there early and prepare to queue up. The line moves and you'll have time to look at the menu on your phone.

I loved the jallof rice sample but decided to try the egusi stew with tilapia. It was very flavorful with a fair amount of spice. The fufu was really good and I enjoyed the red sauce that topped the entire dish. The egusi stew itself had a pretty strong shellfish flavor (from crawfish and I think something else). It wasn't my favorite, but I'm glad I tried it. I think next time I would definitely get the jallof rice :)
