Afrique D Lounge - Fried Rice with Red Snapper - African Near Me - Providence, Rhode Island

Arrived about an hour after opening and it was empty. Ended up sitting at the bar where I ordered my food and drinks. Both were great, I wish I could remember the name of the drink but it was great. I tried The fried Chicken wings and cassava with white rice. The wings were all right but the cassava was the real star of the show here! I would definitely order it again. Next time I'm in the Providence area. Definitely plan to check them out and try some other items off them menu! read more

Sometimes my mom and I want a break from cooking our traditional dishes. While looking for a Liberian food spot we came across this place so we had to check it out. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and told to sit anywhere we wanted. The server was nice and took our orders seamlessly. About 15 min later, we got out our food. We ordered the Palava sauce w/ rice and palm butter with fufu to eat there and the fried chicken & jollof rice to take home. The 2 meals we ate at the restaurant were delicious. Good portions and flavorful with a nice kick. When we got home, we tried the fried chicken and jollof rice. It was a huge piece of fried chicken; I wish it was more seasoned it was a bit on the bland side. The rice was cooked well and had a nice kick of spice. I will be back to try more items off their menu! read more

Food was good after they gave me the wrong order and the wait was way to long for it not to be busy Food was good though.Casava Leaf white rice and fried spinach read more

The red snapper in jollof pepper sauce paired with that sweet onion sauce is a solid 10/10. Perfectly fried, ultra-crispy, and bursting with flavor. Hands down my go-to order every time. Call ahead cause it can take awhile. Also make sure to ask for extra pepper sauce cause its that good. read more

After a long day at the beach the family was starving and we originally made plans for Capri seafood but my daughter saw Afrique and threw us a curve ball to stop here instead. I grew up as a kid in Africa, lived in London, England and now in New England US, and I guess I forgot about "African time". It comes when it comes with no sense of urgency. The traffic and finding parking was horrendous but the wait time and overall experience was just as bad if not worse. We ordered the beef skewers after seeing all the images on Google reviews, the okra stew with fufu and peanut butter soup with fufu. 10 mins Later we get told there isn't any okra stew, So we settle for the goat stew and asked if they can add some extra okra. Another 10 mins go by and We get told there isn't any goat stew. At this point we're scared to order in case it's another long wait before being told no!! They assure us they have palm butter soup so we agree to it. People are coming in after us and being served which means they have food that is being re-heated, slapped on a plate and being served. We waited and then some more, and oh.. some more. We can see the waitresses getting mad at the kitchen for the abysmal service. At this point it's been over an hour with literally nothing on the table. I would have served some complimentary yucca fries at this point if it was my customers especially if they had children like I did. Finally the beef kebab came out. Meat was chewy and 3 of the 5 pieces were just tendon and all my kids could do was chew and spit them out. The two soups came out and a small side of okra which was cold and looked like it was scraped from the bottom of some pot. It was absolutely disgusting. The flavor of the soups were okay but as thick as a 3 day old dish. I should know... I cook these dishes and they thicken over time. In the meantime the music has progressively gotten louder and louder and we're desperate to get out. There was no chicken in the stews, just smoked turkey and absolutely no vegetables like the menu suggested. The fufu was the only thing palatable and you've got to be pretty damm bad to mess up something as simple as that. It was the worst, most disappointing decision we made coming here. I was just so grateful that my 5 year old slept through the whole visit and didn't wake up or else she would have thrown the food across the room, which honestly is what it deserved. I love African food and cook it at home. My Indian family have grown to absolutely love it and to have this happen to them was an absolute shame and disappointment. I could only apologize to my family because we barely got an apology from the service. Never never coming back. Bad service, and bad old, over priced food that's just plain gross. read more

What a hidden gem! Tucked just off Atwell's with all of the party vibes and a better shot at finding parking! The decor is great, the service was lovely, and the music is going to tie it all together. Traditional African cuisine from oxtail and jollof to cassava and collard greens. Comfort foods with excellent flavor and spice! The puff puff is an unexpected show stopper and the chicken wings were perfectly crispy. I'm obsessed. read more

Waited almost an hour for a takeout order placed in person of two simple grilled meat (that's it folks, not long to cook) dishes and a dessert. Staff was dismissive when asked about it despite clearly making other orders that were placed after ours. Will not be returning ever again. Music was also way too loud. As for the food? You can guess the temp that it came out as, thank goodness we have a microwave... read more

Alright y'all, if you're trying to find yourself a comfort meal that has been made by your bestie's grandma, this is your spot. I'm still thinking about the extra crispy, well-seasoned fried chicken I had with some fufu and plantains. My partner is from Guinea and has a hard time finding meals that remind him of home. That is until he found this place -- their attieke is perfect. The pepper sauces, the fluffy and savory cassava, and the seasoned fish? Girl, pull up. read more

I never... when I say never do reviews... this place is the worst place for customer service. Completely ignored, waited over 50 mins for soup..... Manager came over and say how this never happens.... it always happens here. Got to legit any other spot. The village downtown Providence. The food isn't even worth the wait or the disrespect. Wholeheartedly fuck this place. read more

The food was AWFUL. Soups had good spice but the proteins were either overly fried, rubbery or just bones with no meat. Calamari was so fishy. Idk how you manage that... Multiple ants spotted on the bar and floor. We spent 2 hours here and we were lucky to get 1 beverage each that we had to stop the bartender from looking at apartments on her laptop sitting at the bar to serve us, this is 2pm on a Friday so it wasnt busy. I was shocked by the lack of service or quality of food UNTIL the bill came. Gratuity included no matter how small your party is! So it made sense that she NEVER got up from the bar to DO her job because she knew she didn't have to do anything. DONT waste your money here, they won't ask if the food or service was good because they already know it's literal garbage. read more

This place really made my trip to RI worth while. I came to RI for a wedding and expecting to have a great time and great meals during the weekend. Wedding was great but somehow the meals either never happen or didn't hit the mark of expectations. So after an extensive search for African food with my wife and In-Laws we found this place on Yelp and they just so happen to be open till midnight. We Arrived and noticed right off the back they had Hookahs available (Big Score!!!). We were greeted by Tuchi (lovely Cambodian young lady with a great personality). She gave use A1 service from start to finish. The mood of the restaurant was great, ambiance was definitely soothing. We ordered a few item from the menu and a few items that was available that wasn't on the menu. Food took a while but definitely well worth the wait. Food was so good, I forgot to take pictures lol!!!! Food, drink, hookah... what can I say! If I ever visit RI again they are the only reason!!! Before we left I ask to speak with the owner to give him my appreciation for the service and food. Like a tru Gentleman Jerri offered the table a shot of Peanut Butter Whiskey on him. And took the shot with us. Doesn't get better than that. They are a must visit in my book!!!! If you all read this... Thank you all for a wonderful experience!!!! read more

On Feb. 2nd I placed an order over the phone for Jollof & Chicken. They told me they didn't have chicken at the time so I settled for fish. I called at 9PM & when asking when it would be ready I was told 15-20mins. I arrived at 9:35 only to be told the food isn't ready. I explained that I was in a rush & needed to be somewhere, but that I would return back. He seemed hesitant to let me leave so he went back to check on the food & he told me they were packing it up. Upon receiving the food & getting ready to pay I noticed that the Jollof Rice was cold. After telling the owner that it was cold he told me it was fresh & that he could go and heat it up. I told him no because I was in a rush and had to leave. I paid & left in disappointment. I get home, heat up the Jollof, & began eating the food only to notice that the fish tasted a bit rubbery. After a few bites I knew something wasn't right so I opened up the fish only to discover that it was undercooked. By this time it was around 11PM. That same night I had gotten in touch with the owner's business partner to explain my poor experience & he told me the owner wanted to address the situation. Because of work & other things I showed up 48 hours later explaining my experience & requested a refund. His response was that I should have returned that same night to return the food to get my refund. So basically come back before midnight. (Who in their right mind is coming back close to midnight to return food?) But then he went onto tell me that once the food leaves the restaurant there are no refunds??? He only apologized & said he will rectify the issue with his cook, but as far as a refund it won't happen because as he put it if everyone else requested a refund he'd be out of business. So not only was my food late, half of it cold, but the fish was undercooked jeopardizing my health & he refused to do right by refunding my money. His only attempt at making things right was to offer me a discount on a future meal LOL. But would you return after such an experience? No. I could go on with other things that were said but this review is already long enough. This was my 2nd experience with this restaurant. The first time I dined in & they were a good 30-40 mins late with my food & now this. I'll never step foot back inside of this establishment & I don't recommend anybody else either. I've attached a photo of the fish that was served to me below. read more

I'm Nigerian and constantly searching for authentic African food. Afrique definitely hits the market. Their food is excellent. Reminds me of home. Well seasoned and flavored. Serving size is perfection (always a bit to take home and have for breakfast the next day). Ambiance is wonderful and drinks are very strong! The only area for improvement is wait time and menu selection. There were multiple items on the menu that were unavailable and was not mentioned until at least 20 minutes after our order was placed. We placed orders for both apps and mains which took well over an hour for both to come out. read more

So let me start off with this.....the food here is very good. I have been here several times and each time I have gone the food has been good. The one drawback is the service. I have gone with just two people and also with a large party and the service has not changed. Been there on a weekday and a weekend and still no change. I would give them 5 stars if it were not for the service. I also do not like that they charge you gratuity for parties 4 and under. Foe me this is a slap in the face because the service is not great and I believe that they do this as a way to make sure their service staff gets a tip. Afrique you have to do better. read more

The food was average for all 3 orders tonight on my wife's birthday. Was looking to try something new. The service was absolutely terrible, had better service from fast food restaurants. Do not recommend! read more

Where should I begin? While placing our order alot of things on the menu wasn't available. So we ended up ordering what they had which was really good! We ordered 2 meals, an appetizer of calamari and drinks! Once we wrapped it up and got our bill everything was screwed up! Our bill was about $170 more! Drinks that we ordered were charged under different names, double charges on meals! They charged us gratituty and the bill clearly states a party of 4 or more and it was only 3 of us! At first, we thought it was the waitress who kept messing up on the bill but in reality it was the owner because she would have him correct it! The owner kept apologizing but the more he "tried" to fix the bill the more he screwed it up! He then deleted the gratituty and charged us with a service charge! Which was funny but understood! because the tip wouldn't of been great! I honestly think he was trying to play us and it didn't work. He then was like on fly on the wall & tried to cover it up with free shots and conversations! After going back and forth with them, our bill went from $370 to $203! Like I said the food was good but not worth the aggravation! Needless to say, we won't be returning! read more

As of today 25 November 2022, this place does not exist at this location and they have been closed for a while according to the new owners. I've passed by this place so many times and it wasn't until last night that i went in with some friends for a drink. The inside is cute and clean. I usually don't use the restroom in public places, but their bathroom was spotless and smelled good lol While my friends all said their food is amazing, I only had a few alcoholic drinks. The service was A1. Jerry was very nice and attentive. Drinks were perfectly made. I will most certainly be back soon to try their food. read more

I wanted to give this place less than 3 stars but because they are the only restaurant selling good Liberian food in RI I had to settle for a 3. The food is always consistent and always taste amazing. When you call to place an order they never pick up, you have to call multiple times. The wait for your food is overly long. Your waiting for a minimum of an hour! They never have at-least one item on the menu. But lastly, the customer service is terrible . I have gotten the wrong order twice! And when I call to tell them they don't care at all. read more

Had my birthday dinner here, very good food. They put the hot sauce and peppers in little containers on the side so you can control the heat yourself. I have never eaten West African food before but this was a great introduction. I got the Poorboy platter and Pepper Goat soup.
