The food: I got a large oxtail with beans, rice and plantains to go. The portion was big, mostly rice as expected. I would've liked 1 more scoop of oxtail for the $30 but I do know it's very expensive right now, so I'm ok with it. It's was tender and delicious. The gravy was deep and full of flavor. I loved it. The plantains are not the sweet ones and were done perfectly, tender throughout. Good amount of beans! The rice was copious, a weeeee salty but honestly I don't even know if it's worth mentioning. I've been here a few times the Service is excellent very patient folks and its a great place for authentic food and drink. With that being said ...Someone should be ashamed of themselves. I Paid 50 dollars for 2 plates and a bottled water which Id happily hand over for some quality eats. This particular meal was uninspired and confusing. I finally made my way to this Jamaican food place on Eddy Street! I ordered to go. I'm not very familiar with this part of town, and I can be a bit of a Nervous Nellie in unfamiliar environments, so I played it safe this time. The location is a mixed bag--RI Hospital, Brown University practices, and then just a few steps down, gentlemen's clubs so, your call. Now, on to the food! They have the popular, made-in-house Jamaican patties that I enjoy so much. Finally, no more frozen versions. Of course, they were ah-ma-zing, right? I ordered beef and chicken patties and stopped myself from getting the veggie kind as well. As always, I'm in danger of overordering. I did give in to a side order of yellow rice--nothing special, but it wasn't dry, so that counts as a win. I also ordered this fried chicken fillet-looking dish, and it turned out to be a fish cake (or fritter) called 'Flitas'! Made with ground saltfish, it's a serious tastebud stimulator. Yum. I wish I had ordered more than one because halfway through eating it, I didn't want to share with my husband (again--see other reviews, lol). The Jamaican patties are large. The beef filling is moist and had a mild spice to it. The chicken filling is also moist and has a noticeable curry flavor. The crust are truly flaky. I also had the fried bread dough or dumplings. I liked the patties and saltfish fritters (my new favorite!) but found the dumplings only okay. These dishes are really greasy but oh-so-scrumptious. If you're in the mood for an exotic experience, check out the menu board, which boasts Callaloo (Amaranth), goat, oxtail, more kinds of fish, shrimp, and more. There are Breakfast items, Soup, et. al. There are at least six cooked dishes on display that you can choose from. Flames also has a great dessert menu. I was tempted to order a slice of rum cake--next time! Behind the counter, they also have Golden Krust sliced bread--Cinnamon and Jamaican varieties (I'm very intrigued by the latter and would definitely come back to try it). I'm always delighted to discover new-to-me, lesser-known cuisines in Rhode Island. I hear they've been on Eddy Street for at least six years. I stopped to pick up a loaf of spice bun, they don't make them there, however they do carry them. A very tasty treat that would make anyone's breakfast awesome. Jamaicans eat theirs with cheese, a specific kind of canned cheese. I saw in the case a huge codfish fritter, called "flitta" in my house. I have never seen such a monster of a flitta and bought it. First thing I would say is yum, yum yum, it was fried crispy and just a tad bit oily, which suits me fine. The ingredients were not exactly like those fried in my house by a very good Jamaican cook. It was still a very tasty treat and filling enough to last all day. Flame has a well stocked case of various Jamaican wonders and I suggest you venture in to try them. Everything I've tried so far is fire!! I've had the spicy red rice, rice and peas, cabbage, jerk chicken, oxtail and curry chicken. My fave is the curry chicken which was perfectly flavored and the chicken cooked to perfection!! With the cabbage, balances out so well when you get the rice and peas altogether. A few friends had told me about this place, so I had to check it out the next time I was in the area. Because it was my first time here and everything looked delicious, the friendly person behind the counter ran through everything that was available on their steam table at that time. I went with the jerk chicken wings (their most popular item) some yellow rice and sautéed cabbage. I also got a meat patty, a chicken and vegetable patty, and a side of macaroni and cheese. Wow! Everything was seasoned so well and absolutely delicious. They gave me some jerk sauce on the side because they weren't sure if it would be too spicy - but it was just right, and was the perfect combination of salty, sweet, and heat. The macaroni and cheese was the thickest I have ever had - there was no skimping out on cheese here! I also got a carrot punch from the cold juice case - which was made with condensed milk and vanilla extract, it was a little too sweet for me but my kids really enjoyed it. This place is definitely a hole in the wall. Kinda sketchy looking but there were a decent amount of customers when we entered so you know it's a local favorite. First off, they are extremely generous with their portions. That is something I loveeee, when places aren't stingy with their food. I actually raised my eyebrows and let out a soft "woah" as the guy behind the counter went in for a 5th scoop of rice and beans. We got a medium which was plenty of food to share between two people. We got a combo of stewed oxtail and jerk wings. He gave us soo many oxtail which I was so excited for cuz I had never had it before but have always wanted to try. Going into this, I knew it'd either turn out to be an amazing eating experience where I'd get to expand my palate and finally try stewed oxtail, or I'd end up on the toilet that night. I was willing to take the risk lol. Happy to report it was the former! The oxtail was sooo tender, literally fall off the bone, and had luxurious bits of fatty gelatinous parts to it. The flavor was beefy but not too strong and the sauce which seemed like a mixture of spices and it's own meat juices was mild but added to the depth of flavor. I definitely see myself eating oxtail in the near future. The jerk chicken wings were spiiiiicy whew and that's even before adding the spicy sauce. The spice rub was extremely flavorful but had my mouth on fire after the first wing so beware feeble-hearted. Vegetables were nice and the rice and beans were extremely flavorful especially since he spooned splashes of stewed oxtail sauce over it and they had a great dense but soft texture. One star off because no employees were wearing masks and the cashier guy was kinda wack haha but funny. He kept on saying "chicken! Chicken!" after I asked to get the spicy sauce on the side. :| which granted he never told me was spicy I just knew from reading the reviews. Also he took like 10 minutes to bag our container cuz he was watching the tv while we were just standing there waiting . I was like omg I can just do it but I didn't say that. I've heard many wonderful things about Flames, and after Halfway Tree my former Jamaican restaurant of choice closed, I figured it was time to find a new go to place to satisfy my Jamaican food craving. The two are very different, as Halfway Tree was a sit down restaurant, and Flames is very casual, with food arranged in trays (like Chipotle) and 3 different sizes of to-go containers. When we arrived we felt pretty confused, as there was no large menu posted, but rather a small print out hanging up on the glass near the food. It didn't even seem to list everything they make (there was actually no jerk chicken listed on there), and there was nothing to tell us what the meals consisted of, or how to order. I asked the employee what was in the meal, and he said a choice of rice and vegetable. Ok then. He was kind of off in his own world and didn't really offer any help out side of just answering our one question. He also started to sing to himself after a while. It was very odd. I wouldn't not come here for the service, because it was pretty non-existent from where we were standing. In any case, we both ordered a medium meal with rice and peas, I picked the cabbage, and my sister got the green beans, and both of us got jerk chicken. He asked if we wanted jerk sauce on it and we said yes. He went into the back to get the chicken for us. PS the jerk sauce was on more than just the chicken, and it was SPICY! Obviously, it's supposed to be, but just be warned. It's EXCELLENT, but very hot. We took our food home to enjoy since the small dine-in space was very hot (no AC). Oh, and we also got a beef patty, which was super flaky and tasty. I really loved the food from Flames. I'm looking forward to going back! As I said before, there is really no service to speak of, at least not when we were there, but the food is absolutely worth it! The customer service is over the top friendly and the music gets you in the island vibe. The food portions are very generous. I had a medium oxtail and it was plenty. The flavor was good and they add lots of sauce on the rice. I just wish it had a little heat to it. Overall this was a very good plate of oxtails and I left very satisfied. I am so happy that we have a place like Flames to go to for not only Jamaican Food, but more than that, a taste of the Caribbean. If I am anywhere near there, I swing by to get at the very least, their classic patties. The crust is super flaky, and the filling is exactly how I remembered it when I had it in Montreal, which has a large Jamaican community.
