We visited JoRo for the first time on Mother's Day. We were greeted by Joe, who sat us down at a lovely table with comfortable seating. It feels like you are visiting someone's home and you are immediately comfortable. Joe was very attentive and kind. The music was fantastic. We started off with the warm, buttery cornbread and plantains with a spicy herring sauce. The food was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The jollof rice was delicious. The cocktails were refreshing and tasty. Jo and Ro's mom was so kind and sweet, and she cooks all of the meals. I highly recommend JoRo. Stepping into JoRo feels like home - we were greeted and shown around by Joel Sr, there were family pictures on the walls, dining seating was so comfortable, and Joel's mom cooked up our meals. I loved the family feel! Joel mixed up delicious drinks for us. We had espressRo martinis, pain killers, old fashions, and wine. Everyone loved their cocktails. For food, we tried most of the snacks/shareables: Cornbread - dense and delicious Meat skewers with pepper sauce - quite the kick, but definitely a favorite Lasagna bites - savory and flavorful Mac and cheese bites - excellent comfort food Fried chicken - the meat falls right off the bone Fried plantains - sweet with an optional kick Everything was served hot out of the oven and we got to enjoy our food while appreciating gentle music from a vocalists and keyboardist. Her voice was amazing and not too overbearing for dinnertime conversations. Joel was an excellent host, server, mixologist - you name it. JoRo opened very recently in the Federal Hill neighborhood, in the former Syn Bar & Lounge (hookah) space, across the street from Caserta. JoRo offers Liberian and Soul food and at the time of this posting, they were only doing online orders through Toast. The space was still being worked on with the bar and dance floor on the main floor and a cozy upper level section with bar and seating area. While I was in the hood, I was going to stop for pizza, but then I spotted a new place called JoRo. I parked the vehicle on the street and walked up to JoRo, which was empty. The owner was sitting behind the bar and informed me they were only doing takeout online orders. I took a peek at the online menu and chose two selections including the Meat Lovers Lasagna Bite ($15 plus tax) and the Grilled Plantain & Smoked Fish Pepper Sauce ($12 plus tax), The food took about 20 minutes to be ready to go, both selections packed in one container. The grilled plantains with the smoked fish pepper dipping sauce was pretty good. The Meat Lovers Lasagna Bite was actually a good sized heavy piece of lasagna layer with ground meat, cheeses, soft noodles and smothered in a thick red sauce. After taking a few bites of the lasagna along with some of the black pepper sauce, the good flavors quickly became very hot and burning, almost like consuming capsaicin. They went overboard with the spiciness in the black pepper sauce. I enjoy spicy foods, but for this meal, I needed to drink some cold water and enjoyed the rest of the lasagna and plantains in smaller portions over three meals. Other than the over the top peppery flavor from the black pepper sauce, I would return here when the JoRo restaurant and bar is fully opened for dine-in service. read more

Absolutely amazing! The right amount of heat and packed full of flavor! This place will be a frequent stop. Beautiful location, lovely ambiance, with great music playing as you eat. The owners are very kind and attentive. A small staff but you don't feel any loss in service. My wife, some friends and I enjoyed and shared several different plates. All offering a very distinct flavor profile that satisfied every corner of one's palette. This spot is top tier!! Amazing cocktails - also with a dope spin to it. read more

JoRo is literally a hidden gem! With the entrance just off of the official Spruce Street address, I had to do a double-take to find this spot that I have been eager to frequent. Here's a hint: Look for the golden lions on their gates. Upon entering the patio area, we were warmly greeted by the elder Jo who was friendly and familial. The vintage patio seating and decor gave an air of having left Federal Hill and arriving at a friend's house in Liberia. Jo, Sr. assured us that the younger Jo was waiting inside to seat us and take our orders. Just in case, he escorted our party indoors and the transformation was truly activated when we walked in! Surrounded by authentic furnishings and decor, It felt like we had walked into your friend's house (in a good way) and we were waiting for them to bring us a plate of food that their auntie had just prepared...a friend's house will a full bar! As promised, the younger Jo was there to take care of us as well as his brother, Ro...holding light conversation and making us some of the best beverages that Fed Hill has to offer. The Rosalia cocktail is so delicious and refreshing! We ordered the cornbread and Okra dish with a side of rice and both were clearly prepared with love. It was so good and seasoned to perfection. Overall, the experience was amazing. Needless to say we highly recommend JoRo, for the food, service, and atmosphere! I'm excited to return with more friends and dine outdoors. read more

The ambiance of Joro is absolutley wonderful, the seats were comfortable, and the food was amazing!! It was four of us who went, the waiter was accommodating and the owner made sure to welcome us. The appetizer we chose were the fried pepper chicken and the fried platain and smoked pepper. The aunthenticity of the food is present because the spice on those appetizers was west african base spice which was so tasteful with a great kick. The pepper soup and fufu was great and favorful, my only feed back is i wish the soup had that same kick to it...granted I am nigerian so I am use to everything having spice. Go do yourself a favor and go because I definitely will be back!!!! read more

I'm super excited to see an authentic African restaurant in federal hill. The food, ambiance and service was excellent. Drinks were super strong and well worth it unlike most restaurants that tend to water down cocktails. Everything was so flavorful and clearly made with love. I love that this is a family owned establishment with the owner being super attentive to us and ensuring we enjoyed ourselves. This establishment is a wonderful addition to the Rhode Island food scene. I highly recommend and plan to return to try more delish dishes and cocktails! read more

The food was rich, flavorful, and truly made with love; the service was warm, joyful, and attentive; the ambiance was very welcoming and warm, it really felt like entering in the owner's home. JoRo is a new spot, really cool Liberian and soul food. Definitely left feeling that warm feeling you get from a good home cooked meal. I had the fried fish gravy, check rice, macaroni and cheese, steak tips with dry rice, cornbread, and a meat stew with fufu. For cocktails me and my partner tried the Rosalina (learned the cocktail is named after one of the owners nieces, so cute), the Kush, and a delicious milk punch. The fried fish gravy was spicy but personally i'm a big spice guy. Will definitely be back although i'm not from the area. read more
