Giving two stars because we walked out before we could try their food. Since it's possible the food would have been good, I can't justify one star. Unbelievably rude service. Main complaint: husband ordered a traditional "big breakfast," which comes with eggs, toast, hashbrowns plus two sides. He asked if he could get fries instead of hashbrowns. Note: FRIES ARE LISTED AS ONE OF THE SIDES. Waitress says no, we don't do that. We're confused, looking down at the menu and back to the waitress, and she says "I know, it's weird but you have to pick from the sides in the top half of the list. Would you like another side?" Husband says double bacon and she says okay. Note: BACON IS LISTED NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST OF SIDES. As we're sitting there contemplating all this, another waiter walks past and rams (deliberately?) into the chair next to me, sending it crashing into my arm. No acknowledgement this even happened. Husband has even less patience for this kind of foolishness than I do and asked if we could leave, which we did. I have a feeling that if I were an actual resident of Brooklyn, I'd quickly become a regular at Five Leaves. To say this place is cozy is as big an understatement as saying fall of the Berlin Wall was just another ho-hum day along the time line of world history. With their dark wooden paneling, soft candlelit lighting and charming bathrooms, it's impossible not to melt into your chair for hours on end without even the slightest inkling of wanting to exit the premises. Like most bars cut from similar cloth, they do a pretty good job keeping up with the rat race of specialty molecular cocktails. Just about everything you'd expect stirred, shaken, muddled and chipped depending on the preparation of chosen elixir (I don't think "chipped" is an actual method of constructing a drink, but it sounds right). I was told that their menu is "Australian fusion," which I can't claim to have known was even a concept before now, but it seemed an awful lot like every other California cuisine focused eatery I've settled in previously. The menu seems to change based on the season, so the rotating lineup is sure to keep you on your toes. I was also told that the late Heath Ledger was one of the principals behind the project before his sad and untimely death, and that bummed me out. But I suppose it does add a shroud of intrigue for outsiders looking for a notable place to grab a nice bite. read more

3.5 stars. I have been to Five Leaves only a couple of times even though it is in my hood. Since it is insanely(?) packed during weekends, my visits on one rare weekday brunch and late night visit were paid off. It is quite a charming place and they offer good food. Rugged and relaxed atmosphere. I heard thru eavesdropping that this was bought by Heath Ledger initially but since he is gone, it is sold to the current owner. At any rate, It is a New American French/Irish(due to the green leaves/color theme, weird huh?) Bistro to my general impression. Everyone work there are friendly and even pretty waitresses but somehow a little unintentionally aloof for some reason even I went with a friend who knows some of them. Crowds are regular folks that from the typical Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Of course, I had to have the Five Leaves Burger($14) and Truffle Fries($8). Yes, they were as good as you can get. The gigantic brioche bun and the thickness of the grass-fed beef burger was unhandle-able. Finally someone uses beets in the burger. But it was from the can, not the fresh one. and the grilled pineapple ring which I sometimes chop and top on my burgers at home. It all deliciously complimented the greasy burger. I think this is the second burger that I had this big and greasy(?)/juicy since Donovan's pub's in Woodside. The truffle fries yes, really good but not OMG heaven good though. Exellent but heavy. I should have listened to my friend that everyone shares this burger not stuff self alone. I did finish all yes. Pig... A lot of people including my friend order House Cured Gravelax ($11). All the breads in Five Leaves are from the Sullivan Street Bakery. Overall, the Five Leaves are casual and a bit grown up than usual hisper joints in Green-Willy land, even newly parents bring babies to. But somehow, I found it still rough and uneasy to regularly hang or bring my baby to if I had one. It is a bit too biker to me and something that I grew out sometime ago and already moved on to something more refined. So I ended up feeling limbo. And there are too much checking out going on here, good or bad that I feel also uneasy. Crowds here aren't defined but in the process of still defining themselves. I think I am going too deep on a a brunch place now. LOL I will stop. The burger was worth to try. Yet the burger and the truffle fries combo surely numbed my tongue and savory system so that I almost had of a bucket of water after the brunch. LOL Even I give this place 4 stars* (see P.S. for 0.5 star deduction), It will be a rare visit for me to Five Leaves for the sudden craving remedy. This review has nothing to do with the food which is usually good and sometimes great. It's for the almost uniformly execrable customer service. This is a nothing new rant at businesses in Williamsburg/Greenpoint but here's a novel idea: hire wait staff who actually need the jobs and won't smirk/snarl/snicker at customers for no apparent reason. As someone who once waited tables myself, I can't comprehend the unabashed rudeness I've experienced here by the staff (some not all, mind you.) But having been a frequent patron, I've faced so much outright rudeness here it seems to be pretty much systemic at this point. Is the naked insolence somehow supposed to add to the restaurant's appeal? If so, that seems really 2004 and really dated. You know, back when people used the word "hipster" and actually bothered to wonder why a twenty-three-year old waiter, moved here from Ohio six months before and whose parents pay his/her rent, is in such a snit as he/she throws disdainfully menus on the table without a word. Now, with Williamsburg so uniformly homogenous and about as "edgy" as the word "edgy" itself, no one with an ounce of self respect would deign to eat at an establishment that clearly tolerates that kind of behavior. I feel like Five Leaves is reaching neighborhood institution status, and as such, what can I really say? It's consistently good. I prefer sitting outside, but it's pretty cool indoors, with an old ship door as the bathroom door. I'm a sucker for subtle nautical themes and beautiful typography (along with good food), so I keep coming back. Food-wise, my favorites are the now-legendary devils on horseback, ricotta pancakes (I'd recommend sharing with a friend, because they're piled skyhigh), saffron-coconut mussels (ridiculous) and the moroccan egg scramble. And while hardly unique, the oysters, bruleed grapefruit and Ceci Cela almond croissants are also awesome. Also, not to be a creep, but I love overhearing conversations here. It's like Stuff White People Like on steroids. Taking off one star for the (admittedly rare) douche waitstaff behavior and sometimes obscenely long wait times at the coffee window. read more

Dear Five Leaves, We have been neighbors for four years. You are younger and hipper than me but tolerated my old un-hip self and, in turn, I tolerated the indifferent hipster service because I enjoy your food. Your food is consistently good and, admittedly, most times your servers are even friendly. But, tonight, three of your staff just looked right through me at the take out window where I stood, continuing their conversation, while I sought take out service. A raised "one minute" finger or a "I gotcha" nod would have sufficed. I know these aren't the flare wearing types that serve patrons there. The food was amazing, I'd give that a 5 star to itself however the service is what keeps me from ever recommending this place to my friends. Our server did not even introduce herself, probably expecting to give bad service. She was a tall brunette or dark blonde Caucasian. She ordered four entrees when my party was only of three and tried to put the blame on us even though it shouldn't be an issue. She did not give us all the condiments and gave us attitude every time she spoke to us, now most places would gently move the chair, but she purposely shoved and pushed it into our table to make a rude statement and that's when we decided to let her coworker know to kindly ask her to tune the attitude down. She came up to shout at him and say what are they saying about me & that's when she decided to cause a scene which I kept trying to say was unnecessary. Unkind words were exchanged and she said "that's it you guys are not eating here " indirectly kicking us out. So she went and got her manager and all she really did was say I'll take over the table. Overall our experience was very horrible, they didn't even do anything to solve her attitude even though we did not mean any harm. Just be careful for that server. Worst service ever. All the other workers were nice and the truffle fries are must try & pancakes as well! We did not get any apologies for the way she treated our table though. Idk if it was an act of racism or she is on her time of the month. But no server should ever treat their guest that way. P.s. hopefully if this gets to the owner, she was working Monday shit Jan 26,2015 for lunch. Please put your server, specifically her in check. The manager was slightly better but not once did they check up on us after the server caused a scene, besides to trade out the water once or just to collect money. Five Leaves is quite the scene, man. I've avoided it for a long time because it looked like an annoying hassle. But I don't know why I took so long to get here. It's actually really worth braving your way through the thick trendy hipster crowd and squeezing your into the rickety, uncomfortable folding chairs in the tiny seating space among the tattoos and outfits, once you are able to get one, that is. You won't be disappointed, I guarantee. Unless you come at 2:30, which is way too close to 3 (there's a line, you know), then you're screwed. Force your hungover self to get up a little earlier. I was so glad I finally tried this place after all the years I've lived in this neighborhood. The moroccan scramble was out of this world. I can't even describe it properly, and the menu doesn't either. Just get here and try this. Seriously. It's a mound of utter deliciousness. Eggs atop chickpeas and avocado and merguez sausage, with an amazing aioli and some mixed greens. See? It is way better in real life than It lends itself to description. The truffle fries are also quite something. They are quite strong with truffle flavor and addictive as hell. Really great home brewed Iced Tea, too. Music was too loud to hear each other in conversation and we had to ask them to turn it down a little. But they did! The servers here were very nice all around. I used to love this place, then I tried eating dinner here with my kid around 5:30. We were the only people there and still the waitress was giving me attitude because my kid was in her way. When I asked to move the table out a little bit so he didn't ram his head into the hard edge, she said no because there wouldn't be enough room to get by. Did I mention we were the only people there? I specifically go out to eat at 5:30 because I know hipster waitstaff don't want to deal with a crowded restaurant and toddlers. The food is worthy of a 4 star review but the service was so terrible that I unfortunately have to give 2 stars. I was running late for a breakfast date(20 min to be exact) so my friend decided to sit inside and wait for me. She wasn't acknowledged for the first 15 minutes of sitting at the table. No one greeted her, asked if she would like something while she waits- heck she wasn't even given a menu! When I walked in she had just ordered a coffee after practically flagging the waitress down. The experience got worse when I received my food before my cup of coffee. I wondered where it was and when i looked back it was sitting on the bar. By the time she brought it to me it was a bit cold. For the love of god and baby jesus in the manger. Can we talk about the steamed mussels for a minute? These bitches are cooked in saffron coconut milk with cilantro and sourdough bread that's been grilled oh-so-slightly. I'm pretty sure I peed my pants a little bit they were so good. Just the right amount of everything - and the cilantro wasn't overused and was the nicest surprise to the dish. The sourdough bread soaked up the coconut milk and, in all, it was enough for an entree. I also had the truffle fries, which floored me - how have I lived without them for so long? I could smell them wafting from the kitchen and was ready to eat my firstborn by the time they arrived. I definitely recommend Five Leaves. Everything I've had so far has been amazing, and the outside seating makes for great people watching. NB - I've been here many times, and the typically disinterested service that one comes to expect from overly-hip Williamsburg restaurants is absent from Five Leaves. Wouldn't call myself a fan of Five Leaves but they do deserve 4 stars on Yelp. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if I'm in the area I will sure come here for some good eats and cozy cute atmosphere. My friend was running terribly late @ 8:15pm and it was packed with 2-3 other groups waiting before me. Finally my friend arrived at 9pm and we asked for a table. 20mins wait is what we were told. Cool, no problem. Our server was a pretty(I'm paying a compliment to her... not saying that I want to be served by pretty waitresses :P ) and attentive young lady. She was very nice. The venue isn't very big and it has a lot of tables thus the space was very crowded. My friend is a tall strong guy and not used to the Brooklyn "cozy charm" so he was feeling a little bit uncomfortable, specially when he had not place to store away his winter coat and accessories. We had the hanger steak, truffle oiled fries and the salad that had pieces of squash in it. Food was pretty good and tasty. The steak was very flavorful as they must have marinated although most of the dishes were a tad too salty for my taste. The truffle oil fries were good but I still felt weird paying $8 for cheap fries flavored with truffles. I guess its the inner health nut in me screaming and complaining. We shared the dessert consisted of a scoop of ice cream with a shot of expresso. (I forgot the name of it and currently too lazy to look it up, sorry). It was delicious. INTRO: It was my first night moving to Brooklyn and I had NO idea where to eat. Fortunately, my roommate told me about Five Leaves and my mom and I decided to eat here before she drove back home. It was a Monday night, and there was only one table left in the tiny, crammed, but charming space. It turned out to be a good bet for us because it was right near the door. You can imagine that this place is probably crawling on a weekend! SERVICE While it took us awhile to get our drinks and our order taken at first, the service was pretty consistent and friendly after this. I had no problems. It wasn't exceptional, but it doesn't need to be. I was happy that the server did know what she liked on the menu, and that really helped us choose what to order. I always take recommendations! In general everyone was super nice to us and checking in with how we were doing near the end. FOOD We started with the House Made Ricotta with figs, fresh thyme, honeycomb, maldon sea salt & fruit bread ($10). I felt that the serving didn't need to be as big as it did and that they could have included more honeycomb. Taking a bite of the ricotta with the honeycomb combined with the sea salt was one of the most heavenly flavors I have witnessed in awhile, and I would have liked to have had more of that. I will say that though the dish contained sea salt, it was used elegantly so that the cheese was never too salty and had a subtle complexity to it with the thyme popping up at the end of the palate. The fruit bread paired especially well with this. Our entrees came shortly after. I ordered the House Made Beetroot Ravioli with sage burnt butter sauce ($15). These were ungodly delicious. They were served with some sort of greens that were almost as delicious as the raviolis too. The house made ricotta blended beautifully with the sage butter -- it was had a dryer less creamy texture and was not too salty. The raviolis were so delicious I decided not to eat them all so I could treat myself the next day. My mom ordered the a Hamachi dish ($22 - I remember this but cannot find the rest of the ingredients online) that came in a bowl. Large sushi grade like slabs of hamachi in a broth. The fish was delicious and she was very happy with it. After this my mom insisted we finish off with the date pudding. I thought the pudding was alright, but I think I was too stuffed to really judge at that point. DRINKS I got a sazerac cocktail and my mother ordered a bee's knees. They were both great. My sazerac was so alcoholic I had to sip it through most of the meal. That is a good thing. I ordered a glass of french wine that was fruity, but not to dry. It was a very interesting mineral taste at the end. I liked it. AMBIANCE The ambiance is half of what is so great about this place. It's such a local spot, hands down. The chairs are tiny and close to each other and everyone there seems to be in their 20s and 30s. It's homey, but chaotic at the same time. Somehow I find it appealing. I was very disappointed in this place, particularly after reading all of the positive reviews. First, the attitude--maybe I had the one bad waiter in the place, but he was just surly. I don't expect service with a smile, but I don't expect a grim-faced person impatiently and dismissively standing by the table with a cooler-than-thou hipster attitude. I understand if a place is crowded, the waiter might be a little abrupt; but there weren't even that many customers in the place. The waiter even took my drink before I was finished and made a face when I asked to keep the drink a bit longer. Second, the food--it's ok, but not worthy of the price. This is Green Point, not the West Village, and I don't expect to pay $23 for a small piece of fish (without any sides). The cocktails, though, were good. Third, the set-up. They need to buy some better chairs. I was sitting in a rickety fold-up chair that was wobbling to the point that I thought that I was going to collapse. I really don't feel that people with axes to grind over poor service should bomb a restaurant- if the food is great and service sucks I wouldn't give a 1 star. BUT.... I got there at around noon on a monday and there was a one hour wait- no big deal- i went out and took care of some errands. I got back and was seated. It was a table for two but a friend of my was local and showed up and when the host saw that I snuck in a friend he gave me THE BIGGEST STINK EYE i've ever seen. I didn't even look at him directly, out of my peripheral vision I could feel the douche bags glare. I wanted to punch him in the face. Tall guy covered in tattoo's, terribly unfriendly- you know the type. The waitress was nice although a bit inattentive- Had to track her down a few times for refills on drinks, ect. The food was pretty good. Oatmeal sucked. Salad was just greens with nothing else which was strange. BLAT (Avocado) and fries was yummy and my friends pancakes were very good. Prices could have been better- everything was 3$ over priced. I think Portlandia used this place to model what they believed a hipster brunch enclave was all about. 92 decibels. The volume inside is insane for a restaurant. Part of this is the music volume and part of it are the patrons (the quantity and disposition thereof). We live nearby so I grabbed my decibel meter (I'm a nerd, what can I say) and I clocked it at 90+ decibels on multiple occasions. Yelp lists the noise level as average and, sadly, I guess I have to admit this is becoming normal. Conversation is just impossible. I hate being inside, so we try to sit outside whenever we can. The volume makes the experience stressful for the servers because nobody can hear anybody order. They seem pretty ragged. The place is usually packed. The service is good considering what the staff is dealing with. Food is above average. We've been consistently disappointed by the brunch fare but have always very much enjoyed dinner. For brunch food there are better options but Five Leaves is a solid choice for dinner. Turn the music way down and maybe look into some acoustic treatment to control the emissions of people half drunk on mimosas. read more

I was across the street taking a piss test for my new job and I was in desperate need of java. After business was done I walked across the street and noticed a line for coffee to go so I figured there has to be some hype to this place. I looked it up and saw 4 stars so I didn't bother reading the reviews either. I was maybe 4th or 5th in line and the lattes that were ordered were being cranked out at a rate of 1 every 5-7 minutes. Seems like a lot of TLC going into each cup and since I had nothing to do that day I decided to wait around because the aroma emanating through the little window was making me drool. Good thing there were a few patrons with dogs on line for me to play with to pass time. Finally it was my turn and I ordered a black coffee and a croissant. $5.75 the dude said. $5.75?!?! Damn you hipsters got loot, for that price I can get roast pork, duck and chicken on rice in Chinatown! Not to mention the coffee was just eh and the croissant was a bit on the stale side. My husband scowls about everything. He's just not a "sunnyside-up" kind of guy. He finds indulgent things annoying; he hates crowds; cannot be bothered to wait for grub; and mostly, doesn't particularly care for young crowds and hipster-esque environments (funny, actually - considering he married me...I'm a hippie trapped in banker-life hell).... Regardless, we walked to this popular brunch spot after countless weeks of [my] nagging him. We both got the Big Brekkie - he with the thick-cut bacon, the sauteed mushrooms, the hashbrowns and eggs over medium. I got the avocado, the beans, scrambled eggs and an order of truffle fries (after a near scuffle with the waitress, who was seemingly annoyed that I wanted to add them to the order). The cappuccinos were delicious (my husband commented that his, "...tasted different..." - upon which I sampled it - only to realize that it was because the coffee was completely devoid of ANY bitter taste ... which, is no simple feat when it comes to properly making good lattes / espressos / cappuccinos en masse ... it was divine)... Seating was cramped; we were outside and precariously seated on the sidewalk nearest to the takeaway coffee window. I held my breath - waiting for my husband's [inevitable] ire. The food came promptly. I watched, hesitantly, as my husband sampled the mushrooms - silently. Then he tried the bacon - quietly, as well. I saw his eyes dart to the bowl of truffle fries, and (I give an exact quote), he says aloud, "...Well, I've got to try these TRUFFLE FRIES - " (insert sarcasm in tone of voice) ... " - you know, everyone makes a big deal out of truffles. I mean, really - how good can they be?" He pops one in his mouth. Shut the front door, Five Leaves ... because you managed to get my food critic of a double to leave his hat at the door. "They are freakin' FANTASTIC!" My advice is to ignore the hype around this place and eat somewhere else. I went twice: once to pick up brunch, only to be met by a rude hipster-waiter who ignored me until I forced him to acknowledge my existence. The egg sandwich was ok at best. In my opinion, way too slathered in creamy sauce. My next visit there was more atrocious. My boyfriend took me for my birthday dinner and again, we were seated by a waiter who acted like he was trained to ignore us. Maybe the ink from all his tattoos went to his head, I dont know. That would have been excusable had the food been good. I assure you, it was not. My boyfriend ordered the famous Five Leaves burger and ate 2 bites. The meat was overcooked and the combo of flavors was just gross. I ordered mussels and they had a very mealy consistency. I couldn't eat them. I've tried this place several times and I always got out thinking that it sucks. I live nearby to this and my friends always want to meet there when they're in the neighborhood. The place is charming and the tables outside give it that European touch that I really miss. Food is average, nothing to die for. The burger is just okay, too messy and too.. I don't know. Flavors don't come out well and I feel like I'm just eating a lot of different things. Such a shame because I go nutso over burgers, and I absolutely love beets, pineapples, and eggs. Nice try, though. I have been here three times, each time was an experience that took me to the heights of ecstasy and the depths of disgust. HATE: Smug and precious Brooklyn hipster clientelle, stuck up staff with moldy attitude, tiny uncomfortable space, no reservations, wait of over an hour. LOVE: -One of the most unique and delicious burgers I've ever had (pickled beetroot, grilled pineapple slice and fried egg on top- shut up and try it, it's amazing) -Overall excellent food that's innovative yet appeals to your favorite tastes from start to finish (although they had me at DEVILS ON HORSEBACK) -Truly impressive bar stocked to the ceiling with hard to find libations. The offerings on the house cocktail menu are interesting and complex variations on classics, without being overdone -The prices are fair for the quality that is delivered I do have to gear myself up to go here for the wonderful food- it takes endurance and a lot of teeth clenching. But once I'm seated and can focus on my food and drink I always feel that it's worth the massive effort. I give Five Leaves FOUR big fat yummy stars. BUT if you're a guy with an Amish beard who likes to run around in your little sister's pants AND you like good food, then this is a five star joint for you. We were a family of six. The front desk lady gave us two separate tables and when later another table was available, she didn't let us to switch saying that one seat would be empty. This restaurant is the quintessence of hipster cum* Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A restaurant that boasts an investment interest on behalf of the late Heath Ledger, the space was a glorified dump. As in, welfare chic. As in, the inside was a sanitary Hooverville shack, and the tables were replete with Mason jars as water glasses. The seating was so tiny (and I'm relatively slim), so you can imagine the limited range within the intended clientele: starving artists, and yuppies who starve themselves. I had the salad with butternut squash, which was pretty good, hence the three stars. My friend had the lobster bisque soup and half-pulled pork sandwich and seemed to enjoy it. *cum, as in the Latin variant of the preposition "with," not as in male/female ejaculatory discharge. I'm not a Yelp person, but, by God, this place was good. The wait was long, but worth it. We wound up squeezed in at the bar, where we had some perfect sazaracs and stayed warm. We ordered the shishito peppers, which are delicious and about 1 in 10 is VERY spicy. It's like Russian Roulette with food. OmnomnomnomBANG. And then. The burgers. Just plain burgers. OMG. OMG OMG OMG. Best burger of my life! I scraped off the mayo thing they added, slabbed a lil dijon and was in heaven. SO DELICIOUS. Fries were perfect and the salad was great. i don't really want to go all fanboy on five leaves and draw any more attention to it (if that's even possible). BUT i had such an excellent brunch experience yesterday. complete with the Five Leaves Burger, homeade granola and some excellent cocktails. The 5L burger...layers of great flavor...egg...beet...pineapple. it sounds like a big mess but it all comes together for one of the best burgers in the area. I would caution against ordering this on a date or any other occasion where you are trying to impress people. the burger is stacked so high that you have to almost go python style on it and detach your jaw to get a decent bite. the homeade granola with yogurt, topped with fresh fruit is downright picturesque. my girlfriend and i had a mini photoshoot before we devoured it. as for the drinks...the poe's swizzle, grapefruit margarita and roccio are all really well made by the guys at the bar. we left completely full, satisfied, slightly intoxicated and ready for our next brunch at Five Leaves. parting thought...the sidewalk tables were totally full. at 40ish degrees, it was warmer than our most recent run of weather but, yeah, it's still the middle of winter. that's some devotion to brunch! read more

I recently dined at Five Leaves, at an early-ish hour midweek. I was a bit skeptical, as the hype surrounding this establishment seemed way too strong. But boy was I in for an incredible experience... My late breakfast meal at Five Leaves was awesome; hands-down one of my favorite restaurant experiences, and now, officially, my favorite brunch spot. The pancakes were phenomenal. The pancakes were perfectly fluffy, perfectly buttery, perfectly cooked. They were a 10. And the fruit on top - wow - juicy and flavorful as could be. Just when I thought the pancakes couldn't get better, they put some heavenly butter creation on the side (think butter with cinnamon and other delightful spices). I could go on, but I'll stop (as I'm making myself painfully hungry). The meal also included the soup of the day (absolutely superb), ricotta with figs (amazing), and a splendid iced tea. This place is all about quality and large portion size. I have nothing bad to say and only rave reviews to provide. Bravo, Five Leaves!! read more

I've been here about six times and want to love it. Unfortunately, the staff are always somewhere between indifferent and cocky and the food is never quite right. In fact, nearly every dish I've had seems like it's been lifted from a Jamie Oliver cookbook circa 2006. The Moroccan scramble breakfast dish for example, takes avocado toast, dumps eggs on top, and then mixes with what tastes like last night's Indian takeout. Basically, high-end stoner food. I get why it's always busy. Good mixed crowd, reggae soundtrack and nice little scene. But the food quality and snarky attitude leave me cold. read more
