My friend Nicole introduced me to 5 Guys last summer. I'd never been and after my first bite I was hooked for a little while. I'm a fan of their burgers but nothing else. Though their restaurant is packed with bags of potatoes, their fries are sub par. The space looks like your typical fast food place adorned with their signature red and white colors and plenty of seating. When you order, they give you a number. A lot of the cooks have heavy accents so pay close attention for when your food is called. Oh, something to note before you dive into a five guys cheese burger, they're the worst plain cheese burger for you in the country. Love this place! I have been craving a sloppy, greasy burger for quite some time. So when I was walking down 7th today, I decided to give Five Guys a chance. My DC and Jersey friends have been raving about this place, so it was nice to have one open where I hang out. I ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce,tomato and mushrooms. Other toppings include bbq sauce, a1 sauce,mayo and pickles to name a few. Then I got the french fries (they come in original and cajun) I got original. To wash all of this artery filling goodness down, I got a lemonade. So the wait was a tad long, but perfection takes time people. I grabbed a few peanuts while waiting (for some reason they have big barrels of peanuts in the shell available. So #83 is shouted from across the room, I grab my grease stained bag, and sit down for some fatty deliciousness. From the first bite of this burger I am in heaven! So f&*$%!g good! I grab some fries, from the styrofoam cup, and devour them, mmmm Oh, if you couldn't tell I was kind of hungry today. Oh I will be back...good thing Methodist Hospital is right across the street. A Cathedral of the Potato has finally opened in Park Slope. Okay, it is wrapped in the vestments of a fast food joint, is made to share an altar with the hamburger, and sits next to my least favorite major financial institution (Bank of America = totalitarian demon worshippers), on my least favorite stretch of 7th Avenue. None of this actually matters. There are few things in life that call me with quite the zeal of a properly prepared Potato. Sirens go silent next to this mystical tuber. I long ago declared its hallowed moniker a proper noun, worthy of capitalization for the same reasons and under the same principles by which we also uppercase the first letters of words like "Jupiter", "Holy Spirit", and "Dwight D. Eisenhower." Over the years, a diverse assortment of professors, colleagues, and bosses have endlessly doubted this practice, but in the end, after all these tests, I still believe. Finally, we Pauwk Sloep'iz (I think the entire neighborhood should, as a sign of devotion, immediately assimilate to the drawl of our nearby neighbors in Dyka' Hytz) can receive communion in the form of Five Guys (a.k.a., Five Guys Burgers & Fries), a chain restaurant that ascends for an endless variety of reasons -- the most important of which being the faithfully prepared Potato. They maintain a whiteboard in back where pilgrims are actually enlightened regarding the whereabouts of the ultimate creation of the latest batch. On my recent visit, Eden took the form of a settlement in Idaho. The preparation is almost perfect. Finally, we find a kitchen that understands both the meaning and the joy of "golden brown". They leave the skin on, too, fry them in peanut oil -- and pack them in a brown paper bag, through which the medium eventually seeps, like some anointing oil ready for the next baptism. Perhaps it represents a parchment ark. Were I one of the high priests, I might personally increase the oil temp by 50 degrees or so, helping the slices absorb a bit less of the stuff, but with such flava, to hell with how many calories seethe within these things. Prospect Park has some of the most scenic running trails in the entire city, and it lies just two blocks away. Go for a walk. Such an immaterial penance for an experience bordering on 7th heaven. I've been to five guys many times before. Was looking forward to having my own JUMBO custom burger. After I ordered, I realized that I wanted to order something for my mom. The cashier wouldn't take my order even though I got off the line not long ago... So when I got back home I decided to call to file a complaint. The manager eventually got my message and apologized like any good manager would and said that he would send me a coupon. Unfortunately they FAILED to send me the coupon. Not once but twice! I called back to let them know I didn't receive and the manager said they would send it right away but I never received. In all all honesty, they deserve TWO 1 Stars for this. read more

So I brought my girlfriend and roommate here shortly after the grand opening. I had eaten at the one on Montague a while back, and remembered it as being fairly decent. I order basic cheeseburgers and drinks for all of us, and one order of fries. The sum comes out to over thirty bucks--THIRTY BUCKS. For cheeseburgers. In a fast food place. In Brooklyn. I guess the "Five Guys" have heard about Park Slopers' affinity for overpaying for anything and everything. The guy at the counter yells our number. The three of us take our burgers and sit down. We all take a bite, look at each other. Mediocre. Not bad by any means, but DEFINITELY not worth $10 a burger. For all the people raving about this place, saying that the burgers are amazing, I wonder what they would do if they tried a truly delicious fast food burger like "In N Out" on the west coast. Their heads would probably explode. My advice to you--go take your ten bucks, head to Pathmark, grab some ground beef, pickles, buns, ketchup, American cheese, frozen fries, and a two-liter of your favorite drink, fire up your George Foreman, and make six of these badboys for the same price as one of Five Guys, in the comfort of your own home. God knows they are not difficult. If you're hellbent on heading out for your burger, I recommend Grand Canyon down on 7th and 1st instead. Cheaper, more of a char-grilled taste, and you get to sit in an actual restaurant type setting. Better that than putting the "Five Guys"' kids through college. read more

I like the burgers once in a while. My cheeseburger had 2 pieces of meat ! Their Kosher hot dogs taste really good!. In my last visit, one of the girls who got off her shift walked inside the kitchen with her big hairy pony tail all the way to the cash register, touched something, then walked back to the back room. Why did she do that? all her pony hair did not need to be in the kitchen, she could had come by the lobby and ask the guys to give her whatever she needed. This Five Guys location is alright. Nothing special really. I say this because although the burger and fixings taste pretty good, I find the meat itself has a weird texture. Mostly rubber like bits you run across while chewing. The burgers at the former Five Guys in Woodstock, VA had a somewhat better taste and texture, this is why I'm curious if each location goes with a local meat supplier or if the 7th Ave location just had bad luck from a central butcher who supplies everyone. The house peanuts are nothing like the kind you get in the 5G's in Virginia, but being this is NYC, you really can't fault anyone for not having warm, right out of the boiler and picked off the vine peanuts. They're pretty... forced to put up the calories next to the price. I have to admit. The number of calories made me scale down from a cheeseburger to a hamburger. Pros: The unlimited toppings! Next time I come back, I'll definitely try the hamburger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions and more grilled mushrooms. Sweet buns of glory! No seriously, they're sweet. The buns I mean. In a good way. They kind of remind me of mcD's burgers (blasphemy?). but DUDE, they give you 2 meat patties, which is another awesome point giver. Cons: The tap water has dust particles that you should let settle before you drink from it. Oh yea, and its a bit greasy. But then every burger is like that. This type of burger I can kind of compare to shake shack. but they each have their own perks. Like Wendy L., shake shack has the shack sauce, while this one has UNLIMITED TOPPINGS. =) read more

On 1/11/13 I sent my son into 5 guys with a $100 bill to buy 3 burgers and an order of fries. I was outside in the car watching (there was no parking). Immediately after he ordered, a parking spot opened up and i came into the store. We reviewed the bill ($83.00) and the change ($63) and discovered the cashier gave back 2-twenties, 2-tens and 3-singles. I immediately went to the the cashier and said, it looks like you gave my son $20 less than he should have gotten. Without flinching, she gave it back right away. Where I come from, this is called theft. While stealing from anyone is horrible, stealing from a 10-year old is even worse. These are popping up like poison ivy on a jr. counselor at summer camp. This location has plenty of seating, big windows and is just far enough away to keep me from going too often. I get a cheeseburger all the way with jalapenos (raw!), onions (fried!) and mushrooms and regular fries. I eat as many peanuts as I can while I wait (and toss some to my dog tied up out front) and then rush home to eat! If you only want one patty you have to order a "little" cheeseburger or a "little" hamburger. Free refills on the drinks! I so much want to toss my peanut shells on the floor. This location has a lot of seating and a lot of peanuts. The burgers are a little greasy, and made to order with the 20 or so optional (free) toppings. They are really good for the speed of service, but aren't about the meat. The patties are thin, and out of five cross sections I've witnessed I've yet to see any pink. That said, an everything with Cajun fries has beat out Donuts Diner for my favorite Park Slope hangover cure. read more

I hit up 5 Guy on New Years Day in the midst of hangover hell with my body basically telling me to fuck off/begging for grease to sop up the liquor I'd overindulged in. Maybe it was my hangover talking, but every element I experienced was perfection. Their burgers were the closest to In-N-Out I've experienced in NY. Daaaaaaaaaaangerous! This place opened up a block down from my boyfriend's apartment... which will make it harder to avoid temptations of eating foods that can fatten me up. I hate waiting in lines, but even with quite a few people on line for this place... it moves really fast! Peanuts to munch on while you're waiting, and you can watch the guys/gals make your food. I've basically given up on finding a really great burger in NYC because I don't think it's going to happen. Yesterday, I tried Five Guys. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's a fast food environment, but the burger was really good. The fries were really good and there were free refills on drinks. (wtf is up with NYC and no free refills? It's the only place I've been in the US where you don't get them!) The portions were huge. I got a cheeseburger and it had 2 patties. Same thing for my partner. We both got regular sized fries and there were at least 2 more orders in the bottom of the bag. It was what I needed. It didn't have an english muffin for a bun or cajun spices or any of the other weird shit I have come across in my quest for a good burger in NYC. read more

Like many, I love Five Guys. There's something about a juicy burger overflowing with greasy cheese and ketchup. It's so seductive. This Five Guys location is like all the other chains, so there's really nothing to write about when it comes to that. I usually get a double (cheeseburger) with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and jalapenos. And an order of fries. It's my go to when I need my spicy custom burger (on a dime) fix.... There's something about seeing the grease from the burger and fries seep through the paper bag that brings me back. Way back to when I was a kid. How can one not like a burger joint whose regular burger comes with two beef patties and all the fixins for free! Five guys has been likened to In n Out burger and I don't really see the connection other than the burgers being cooked to order. I love my In n Out and my Fives Guys - two different types of burgers both equally 'lish. I came here on a Sunday right when they opened. I can only imagine how busy this place must get being that it's right across the street from Methodist hospital. I got a mini burger (love that you have to get a mini burger here in order to receive a normal sized burger.) I got it with A1 sauce, jalapenos and grilled onions. The burger itself was very good. I love the bun as it was a nice foil to the meat and toppings. Ohh yea, a good tip is to never to order a large fries. Stick with the small because not only do they fill the cup to the brim, but they stuff some more into the bag! Their cajun fries are yummy - seasoned well. I haven't tried their regular fries yet will do so soon. Overall a solid place for burgers and fries. I will definitely be back to try their normal burgers and regular fries! read more

I love five guys and the one in park slope was a bit of a disappointment. The place looks just like the one in bay ridge but it suffers in some parts. I got a regular burger with the works and jalapeno's and hot sauce with Large fries and reg drink. The burger looked nice and tasted delicious until the jalapeno came into a bite. It was a plain non fried jalapeno that killed the taste of the warm juicy delicious burger. The other non-satisfaction was the amount of fries. I remember in the Bay Ridge five guys the bag overflowed with fries and here the large cup was only filled to the top. Besides the taste bud killers and low on the fries this place is pretty decent. I did make it up with three refills but probably will never return to this five guys again. read more

I've tried, really. Each time I go to Five Guys, and 3 times is enough, the burger is so greasy that my bun disappears into mush and I end making a big mess. The toppings are OK but it adds to the sogginess of the burger. I like the fries. Nothing to rant or rave about so I'll just keep it as, "they're OK". I'm very picky to burgers because I know I can make them better myself, and I have reduced meat from my diet. So when I want to treat myself to a burger, I stay away from here. read more

Oh how I love Five Guys! But not this one. They ran out of mushrooms, most sodas, and mustard over two hours before closing. And thats just what I know they ran out of, I'm sure they were out of other ingredients that I didn't know about. Without being mean to an individual, I will just say that there was nothing pleasant or appetizing at all about the person taking orders. Not his/her professional appearance, attitude, or customer service skills. This is not the first time that they ran out of stuff here, its almost always something. Yuck! I've been to Five Guys twice, and both experiences were icky. I really wanted to like this fad place, but as fads go, this place is all hype, and no flavor. It's a glorified fast food restaurant, and I find it funny that people have tried to talk it up as the fast food alternative. Sure it's not McD's, or BK, but they suck in their own special way. The good is that they have plenty of free toppings. The bad is that their burger reminds me of the grade Z lunchroom burgers I used to get from my elementary school cafeteria. They always tasted like cost cutter burgers. I didn't appreciate having the wool pulled over my eyes as a kid, and I certainly do not appreciate it now, as a grown-up, especially when it's expensive to eat here. The burgers and buns are soggy, and everything falls out. The fries are just not good. Bottom line, there are at least fifty close-by burger joints within a mile radius of any five guys. Opt for almost any one of them, and you'll likely fare better. Go with your gut. Skip the fad. :-) read more

The only thing I didn't quite like about the place was that they had calorie listings next to the burgers. I don't really want to think about that when I'm eating burgers, but then again, I was much too drunk to care. I'm glad I ditched my vegetarian boyfriend to come here, too, because he would've only been able to eat fries and grilled cheese. I already bitch that he doesn't get enough protein. I had the bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions. It was yuuuummmy. I know other reviews say the burger itself is enough to satisfy, but I thought it looked a little small. I love cheeseburgers. A lot. When I moved to New York I couldn't find an amazing burger no matter how hard i looked. A friend recommended Better Burger. I took one bite and three my burger into the gutter, shouting "this burger is BULLSHIT!" Five Guys is another story. Despite it's nasty fast-food ambiance, Five Guys had a friendly staff who served up made-on-the-spot burgers made from fresh ingrediants. I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries. At first I scoffed because the didn't have cheddar cheese, only American. American cheese is repugnant but even that couldn't take away from his burger's deliciousness. These are okay for fries. Honestly, I have never tried the burgers there but I've heard that they are okay. My advice is get the fries without salt, you know, that's healthier that way, all around. The location is good, right in the heart of town, however, don't try and park anywhere there. There is no parking. Meter parking is there but it takes forever to find an open meter. It's not far from Barnes and Nobles in Brooklyn, and it's not far from the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. So have your meal there and then walk a block or so and browse the books in Barnes and Nobles. Why THREE stars? I've been to three or four of the FIVE GUYS stores. This one rates a three stars. Five Guys has some amazingly tasty burgers. And the fries are some of the best I've ever had! If you order fires at this particular location, they'll put the size your ordered in your bag and then continue to fill your bag with fries, so one regular cup of fries = 3 to 4...good to know! Despite the deliciousness of Five Guys, I always regret eating here. The fries are so greasy, and I just feel guilty for eating such horribly fatty foods in one sitting. But they are tasty! Five Guys' idea of providing a clue about where the food served comes from is putting up a sign saying "Today's potatoes are from Idaho." All the same, the burgers are cooked-to-order, fresh, and with an array of toppings to choose from. My personal favorites are mushrooms and fried onions. This is my kind of burger - thin patty, almost mcdonald's-esque, but actually fresh tasting, with a chewy burger bun and cheese. Along the same veins as a Shake Shack burger, but the only thing missing here is the special Shack Sauce (what do they put in that thing that makes it so delicious? Crack?). We used to eat here once a week until we went gluten-free. Now, I will have gluten on occasion and last Sunday night was one of those occasions. Bacon (Double) Cheeseburger with mustard, grilled onions and pickles, and my share of an order of fries. It's probably about 1300 calories and another couple hundred because I decided to have a can of soda with it. And you know what? It tastes like 1300 calories of heaven. My DC days taught me the importance of a Five Guys burger. That was also in my meat-eating heyday... now I'm a devotee for the fries alone. And let me tell you - they're worth it. The other night my husband brought home a deliciously greasy brown paper bag and I squealed with delight when I realized it was full of Five Guys fries. Nothing is ever frozen at this place, all the taters are cut on premises and fried to perfection. The staff were all very cool and friendly (which can be hard to find on 7th Ave these days in a casual place), and the food is prepared fresh while you wait. If you haven't experienced Five Guys yet, what are you waiting for? A tip: the "little burger" is a single patty, the regular burger is 2! read more

As a former SoCal resident, I've always heard that this chain was the E. Coast equivalent of In & Out (which I think is o.k.), so after living near this place for 8 months, I finally gave it a shot. Mixed feelings. The burger is really good for a fast food/chain place. Made to order and customizable with a variety of toppings, this is the type of burger you'd enjoy at a great backyard BBQ. It's got that "good type of messy" caused by juices and sauces rapidly defeating the bun. On the flip side (no pun intended), it's pretty damn pricey, where a burger/fry/drink combo will run over $10. I don't mind breaching that price for a burger meal at a decent sit down place, but here you only get the seat yourself/formica table experience of a fast food chain. As such, I'm inclined to spend the same funds at a locally owned eatery with equal or greater burger offerings. In other words, it's great for a chain, and is good if you didn't have alternatives... but in NYC you usually do have better alternatives. read more
