OMG! We stopped in to get a bite to eat and this restaurant exceeded our expectations as always!! The staff is always friendly and greets us by name with a warm welcome every time we come in. I got a frozen margarita tonight & it was delicious. My husband usually gets crown with a splash. And they always make his drink perfect, at a great price. Their oysters on the half shell, are always fresh, and are my favorite appetizer!! Love the cocktail sauce with horseradish !! Yummy! We split the fried catfish and oyster basket. We always split it. 3 filets & 3 fried oysters with plenty of French fries for two. The catfish was so tender & flavorful! No fishy taste at Fishshack!! Had really friendly service here and appreciated the local beer selection! The hush puppies were AMAZING and I loved the sauce. My mom and I tried the Grant's Platter for 2 and were underwhelmed with the amount of food for the price... especially the rather small crab legs. Yep, I'm a fan. Me and my friend who go out to din roughly weekly end up here at least a couple times a month, and I hit 'em again when I need a quick din on a weeknight. I won't say I'm a fan of their interior look, but it's functional and they *clearly* put their money in their food, which I can only applaud. Prime evening hours are BUSY and parking can be a challenge. Good for them! But if you can get there a *little* early, you'll be glad. The food is generous serving and well made. To go orders are no problem. They have a very professional crew all the way around. I generally get the grilled fish ($10.95 for salmon, thank you!), get the seafood soup as an indulgence (must be some fat in there - it triggered a gallbladder attack back when I still had that sucker). And as someone else described, this is served Mexican style, with cilantro and avocado slices. Makes me wish they'd do a tortilla soup - bet it would be great! Oh, and I got the lb of boiled shrimp one time - that was killer. But no veggies included. Another time, we agreed we would get that, split it, and order side veggies. My friend generally gets the gumbo. My only surprise/disappointment to date was the shrimp po'boy. I had a choice of fried or grilled shrimp. As best I can recall, neither of those is how the shrimp were prepared in any other po'boy I've had, but I'm in Dallas - what do I know about po'boys! Anyhow, I selected grilled, thinking "healthier." If I'd had those shrimp outside the bread and dressing, I would have liked them just fine. But I found the spices on the grilled shrimp conflicted unpleasantly in the sandwich. And the fried alternative -- personally, I just don't generally do fried foods. read more

Why did we try to go somewhere else? After heading to another place that ran out of crawfish we came back home! Fish Shack you are so good to us! Tonight it was packed and the line was out the door. We hopped in and quickly she snagged a table in the front dining room. The line moved quick and Friday happy hour is $2 drafts so I grabbed a few and placed our order. My wife was craving crawfish so we got 2lbs of steamed wonderful goodness. Good size and fresh, nicely seasoned as well. For starters though we enjoyed the spicy shrimp cocktail. We will now start every time with this spicy piece of art! I personally really enjoyed the cod special tonight. $6.98 for two big filets and fries was absolutely worth it. Because the line was out of the door during Hubby and I's first visit, we left and returned a second time for an early dinner. As a native south Louisianan, I set the bar very high for seafood. Fish Shack is a solid ok... not terrific, but not terrible. Order at the counter, find a seat, and listen for the server with the food to call your name. Hubby and I ordered baskets... me, shrimp and oyster, and Hubby, fish and oyster. The oysters were very small with more breading than oyster. The shrimp has good flavor, but was over fried, and dry. The fish was the better of the three, but the filet was a little thick. I liked the thick cut steak fries, but Hubby's onion rings were a little greasy. We like that the fried pickles are pickle spears. Lemon wedges are on the bar counter and could be more accessible, especially when the line forms in front of the counter. I hate to say it, but for the price, the fried oysters and shrimp are not worth it. The fish and fries are ok. read more

The hardest part about moving away from Plano is hands down leaving this place behind. I don't consider myself a regular at many restaurants but this is the one I will always be coming back to. ATMOSPHERE 5/5- This is definitely not a high end restaurant but rather a cozy, nautical themed place. One thing I noticed the first time I came here was that there's a lot of older customers dining. That almost always means you can expect great things because most of them have probably been dining here for years. You do have to order at the front and your food will be brought to you. Despite being an older, established restaurant, everything is quite neat and tidy. Weekends, especially Sundays can get extremely busy but usually the ordering line is short. All the condiments (lemons, horseradish, hot sauce) you need is provided at the front. Definitely try to get a spot in the indoor patio. FOOD 5/5- During crawfish season, my boyfriend and I would come here every weekend for their oysters and live crawfish. Crawfish here doesn't have all the garlic butter sauce most places have now. Instead, it just consists of simply Cajun spices, salt, lime juice, and hot sauce (I assume). This way, the flavor of the crawfish by itself stands out. I prefer the dry seasoning (without hot sauce) and my boyfriend prefers the regular way. Oysters!! I order a dozen almost every time I'm here because for $10.95, it's really worth the value. I would say, 90% of the time the oysters are really fresh and briny, also a decent size but there are sometimes off ones. The blackened catfish tacos are a must-try here, the full order comes with 3 soft tacos, rice, sliced avocados, and an AMAZING spicy cole slaw (been trying to figure out the recipe for this for years). Try the tacos with the spicy aioli they give you, a squeeze of lemon juice, and Tabasco. So good, I've introduced all of my friends to this place. Lastly, the buffalo wings and ceviche are delicious as well, but definitely try the others first. SERVICE 5/5- While it's not table service, the employees will bring out your food and clear away plates pretty quickly once it's done. The only thing is, food will come out whenever it's ready, sometimes if you have a big order, they'll bring it out to you all at once. Although, the workers here are all extremely friendly and will refund you the tab if something takes a long time to come out. They really put customer service first before all else, that's what I like so much about this place. Honestly if I could give 10 stars, I would. Anyone that loves seafood needs to try this place out. Years ago there were local fishermen providing fish to seafood restaurants at the beach. NO more! Today the few fishermen (boats taking out fishing parties) are being fined for selling their fish, so truly fresh fish is becoming unavailable, both for the public and for local restaurants. The Fish Shack is a (very) small, simple restaurant that tries to be what used to be common, a restaurant serving well prepared local fish for local customers. The fish IS very fresh and very good despite the fact that it comes from a commercial wholesale fish market. The fish is very good, and it would seem to be a no brainer to eat at the Fish Shack. There are, however, some disadvantages, primarily the fact that there are often long waits to get in. Reservations? Forget it. Expect to wait at least half an hour in season. Another issue is comfort. Most of the seating is at the counter. My back was aching by the end of the meal. Expect an even longer wait if you ask for a table. In short, this is an excellent place to go for simply prepared fish that is actually fresh and is reasonably local. You should, however, expect a long wait and possibly some discomfort as part of the price. P.S. the prices are not low, but fresh fish is now a luxury food, so this should not surprise us. read more

Just found this great spot a few days ago. Fast and friendly service. We tried the fried cod, fried catfish, fries, onion rings, hush puppies, fried pickles,seafood soup, and gumbo. Not all at once!. First of all- very good price for the amount you get! I ate for two days! Big pieces of fish , very tasty. The tartar sauce is awesome. The fries are huge cut , if you like them big- they are big. I loved the fresh catfish I got. The seafood soup was a little spicy but tolerable and there are big chunks of fish and vegetables in it- really yummy. Omg- the hush puppies are the best! Sweet and crunchy with a hint of jalapeño? But not spicy- thank goodness. The only thing I didn't like was the gumbo. I thought it tasted like beans. I was thinking maybe they got the spoon into the wrong pot or something- they do sell beans-but maybe I'll try it again another day. Oh and the fried pickles- no complaints! This place always, always has a line out the door. I love the popcorn shrimp as the breading is super thin and comes off so easy. The gumbo is a bit spicy, it contains pepper corn. 3 star gumbo if they left the pepper out I'd consider it a 5. So if you like spicy gumbo this is the place to go. Had a very nice lunch here with my wife today. It was a bit cold outside so the clam chowder and the gumbo hit the spot. Both were very good. My seafood salad was excellent as was my wife's fried shrimp. The place is very busy and very clean. Nice folks behind the counter as well. I stumbled upon The Fish Shack while driving through Plano. The patio was packed and the line was to the door, so I figured the food here has got to be good. The restaurant isn't anything fancy, but it's a cute little spot. There's lot of nautical decor and the owner is clearly a Dallas Cowboys Fan. Ordering was a breeze, I ordered the 3 piece catfish and fries platter. With about 10 people ahead of me in line, the wait time was surprisingly short. I got my food in about 7/8 minutes. The portion size was fair for the price, but the fish was a disappointment. The filet pieces are very thin, heavily bread and just lacked MEAT. While the flavor was good, I feel like I was just eating a lot of breading. read more

One of my favorite seafood places in Plano. If you call ahead they are very quick. I have never ordered anything that I didn't like. I like the Santorini cocktail. I like how they don't skimp on the shrimps. Their sea food soup is yummy. Spicy and kinda taste like a Mexican sea food soup. They fish tacos are really good. Food always prepared hot! Atmosphere is mom and pop style. I see people I know there all the time. When I can say about the food: needs salt and pepper. I like that the fish is always fresh, but it's VERY skimpy on seasoning. Glorified cornmeal really. The onion rings have a beer batter, which I'm not too fond of, but they were good if you like beer batter. I also tried the shrimp. It is VERY generic. The French fries are like steak fries and very good, but need seasoning/salt/pepper for flavor. The hush puppies that came with my fish and shrimp dinner were rather large. They were a bit cornmealy, not savory. They could have used a jalapeño or something extra to give them a boost. They also serve oysters. My friend said the same generic flavoring for the oysters as well. Nothing special about them. Another friend ordered ceviche for the table. It was bland as well, but fresh tasting. There are good lunch specials. If you want a meal that's hot and fresh, this is a good place to call ahead. There isn't anything fantastic about it... overall, this place doesn't have knock your socks off seafood, but I would go back because it was fresh and hot. Just be prepared to add your own seasoning when you get home, or bring it with you if you plan to dine in. read more

Good fish place that seems to be hunting for an identity. It's part fish & chips, part cajun, part Southern, and then there's a splash at trying to have a Caribbean or Hawaiian touch. The food prices are reasonable, but not inexpensive (think $15 each without alcohol) for a decent serving. Beer is overpriced with no apparent inexpensive option. Bud Light is 3.50 a longneck unless you want fancy Bud Light (orange) which is 4.00. Most light beers were similarly priced and I don't like light beer to begin with. I'm guessing real beer and imports are in the $4 - $5 range. read more

Oh let me count the ways we love this place- The onion rings are amazing, crispy out and firm and sweet inside. The cornmeal breading they use (try the shrimp) is to die for, and the catfish will rock your face off! The hush puppies are fabulous with their little corn & pepper bits. I also love the crab cakes. I haven't tried the ceviche yet but drool over it every time I see it there. Though Fish Shack is counter service, they do deliver your food to table and periodically check up. The wine selection is limited but good. We also love the "make your own cocktail sauce" set up; the horseradish is really snappy & fresh.
