We stumbled upon Half Shells Seafood Grill and saw any people eating outside so we joined too. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and it's dog-friendly outside! We came during happy hour luckily (Sunday to Friday, 3-6 pm) and ordered the calamari and $2 oysters (gulf and mystic maid). The menu has a lot of variety, so there's something for everyone. Amazing! My husband and I came here - spur of the moment. I wanted seafood and this was one of the top Google suggestions. At first, we thought we'd have to wait because it was crowded. But we didn't! We were fortunate to have been seated in a booth. Our server, Michelle, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the restaurant and food. We ordered 6 oysters for appetizers. It tasted fresh! The chalkboard menu in the restaurant changes often so I suggest finding something you like there! That's what my husband did. He got the seafood enchiladas - it had 3 different types of fish inside and it went well together! I had the Grilled Mediterranean Sea Bass. It was delicious! I enjoyed it. I wished there was more chimichurri. Otherwise it was a good dish. For dessert, we got the key lime pie. My husband is very particular with key lime pie. Unfortanely, he wasn't a fan, but I enjoyed it. The pie is not homemade, but it was better than your grocery store bought. TL;DR: It was a decent experience, but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend visiting the area. Food: I had ordered the shrimp piccata pasta (it's on the blackboard specials menu), and I was little underwhelmed by it. For spending $28 (after tip) on a pasta dish, I was hoping to get more than 5 shrimp or at least a larger portion of pasta. The piccata felt too lemony -- I would have preferred the butter or parsley flavors to be stronger. I finished my dish pretty quickly and was left feeling a bit hungry still. Service: Our server was friendly and did come to fill up our water around halfway into our meal. No complaints about the service! Ambiance: The restaurant was not very busy when my friends and I went, so it was nice and quiet here. The dining area is very spacious, and we got a pretty big booth. While the restroom was overall clean, it is a little inconvenient that there are just two stalls (door swings inward so it's a little cramped getting out too) and no urinals. read more

First time here today! It was really good. Service was great and the restaurant was bright and inviting! Let's get to the food: Oysters were great BUT kind of small. It would be great if they could serve some really big oysters! It was also kind of too cook but not bad (some was "dry") The blackened rainbow trout was cooked PERFECTLY! And they gave me a beautiful BIG!!! Piece! I was very happy with it. Worth the price! I did sub the lemon basmati rice for the mushroom spinach risotto. Now, this is only my preference, the risotto was bland to me so it would have been great if we could have some umami added to it. Maybe use a chicken broth or something? Not sure. But it needs more flavor. The spinach and fish doesn't need critiques- it's perfect! The andouille chicken was flavourful, I can't say much as I only had a bite of it but my boyfriend said it was good but he thinks it's he chicken could have used more seasoning and the red beans and rice was too watery. With my family being from New Orleans we love oysters and crawfish, so I'm always on the hunt for a new spot. My family dined here on a nice afternoon. We sat out on the patio. Our server was really sweet and the hostess was nice as well. We had 2 pounds of crawfish and two dozen oysters. Everything was decent but not the greatest, the oysters were very tiny and could have had a little more Parmesan cheese on them and the crawfish was OK. I would not get the crawfish again. Aside from there only being a couple people in there and waiting probably 5 minutes to be waited on, that would have been my biggest complaint. I ordered my friend fried shrimp. She enjoyed that. Went to grab dinner here to catch up with a friend. I loved the service, which was very friendly and helpful when asking questions about the menu. I ordered fried pickles and hush puppies as the appetizers and the fish and chips for my main entre and she ordered the blackened trout. The food was delicious! Felt fresh and brought out at a very reasonable time. My friend said hers was also tasty and extremely filling! The place had a very relaxed ambiance and the location lends itself for a nice date night, a lunch meetup with friends, and a solo lunch/dinner at the bar seating. A recent visit to Plano for a girl's weekend wrapped up with a wonderful lunch experience at Half Shells. This was probably one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. We were there at the end of lunch time, and the street was closed off in preparation for a holiday event with stalls all along the street. It seemed that the crowds were somewhat limited, I think because of the early hour and the limited ability to get down the street. But this resulted in a perfect experience for us! We sat outside, and our server was Jean. Jean, you are probably one of the best servers I've ever had the pleasure of being served by. I felt treated in such a way that I haven't experienced many other places. My friend and I were considering which oysters to order (I'd never had, and my friend only a few times), and so Jean brought us each one of the mermaid oysters to try. I discovered how much I actually enjoy the oyster experience! Jean also provided us with samples of the soups (I went with gumbo)... and then I had Shrimp and Grits for a main. Honestly it was so much food (and a dessert too), that I can't believe I ate so much, but it was soo good. And the whole experience including drinks, food, dessert, OYSTERS, and Jean as a server was impeccable! My last review was in 2017 for Half Shells. The area used to be the Rodeo Drive of Plano before Legacy West opened and left this area more calm, which is good. They moved onto this spot after Taco Diner closed, and this works a lot better. They offer huge portions in a lively atmosphere. My fish and chips came out so hot from the fryer that I had to sip some tea with each bite. Eating a little slower, this dish was just great. It is crawfish season and customers are enjoying them by the pound this week. When the check came, it was enclosed in a survey card that asked a few questions, including whether the food came out hot. Interesting "old school pen and paper" survey instead of digital. I haven't been to Half Shell in about a year and now I know why. Went tonight and had one of the specials which was suppose to be pesto pasta with a lobster tail! Horrible meal! Just butter noddle and an over cooked lobster tail. Absolutely no flavor. The noodles were so bland it was hard to eat. The lobster was so overcooked the meat was hard! My wife had a salmon special which was overcooked and do bland! Good Lord, how this place has gone down! I will not be back for any reason, over priced and poor quality! read more

Nice outdoor quiet covered patio for Wed night dinner on a rare 87 degree evening at 7:30 pm. No wait and quickly served. My free birthday full size calamari appetizer from signing up for their Rewards program on our last visit tasted good with light crisp batter and a sweet and sour sauce and tartar sauce. I always love going to Half Shells! It's close to home and has great service. I usually get the shrimp tacos, the lobster and shrimp grilled cheese or try something off the board. We were surprised that Half Shells restaurant had relocated to another space just down from where we had visited several times before. We really love the new space! Such a clean and bright restaurant. The restrooms are also clean and bright and the floors have a beautiful white penny tile with a great pattern. Hubby mentioned that the men's room had nice private stalls, very clean. The old space seemed dark, crowded and loud, so this new space is very welcoming! And much bigger including an awesome patio space! We were meeting another couple there for dinner and we arrived first and requested a table on the patio. So glad we did! You give your cell phone number and they will text you an alert when a table is available. The patio was very comfortable and they even lit some patio heaters after the sun was setting and the temperature was dropping. Great atmosphere! The food was spectacular! Hubby and I are trying to eat smaller portions and we decided to split one of the specials - Blackened Redfish, Shrimp, creamy parmesan rice and green beans. YUM!! Our friends ordered the flounder and the grilled shrimp and they each enjoyed their entrees as well. They do draw you in with the lower prices on their entrees, but it's still an a la carte type menu so it's going to cost you $40-$50 for a meal. Their crab bisque is fantastic! If you're a first timer they will bring you out small samples of the soups which was very nice touch, their chowder was excellent as well. The main entree lacked flavor, I got the crusted corvina with cheese ravioli, I thought it was an unusual mix, fish with ravioli, but I wanted to try it. The flavors were good, just not really flavorful, the fish was good, but not flavorful. The raviolis were cheese, and tasted like cheese raviolis. My wife's order on the other hand wasn't bad but just a little too oily for her liking so our waiter Mr Matthew gladly helped her in picking something more palatable. This was our second visit to Half Shells Seafood Grill. We enjoyed the happy hour and their patio on our first visit, so we decided to go again for a patio date. Their outdoor patio is nicely shaded and has fans and plenty of space. We ordered their east coast and gulf oysters as an appetizer, which are around 2-2.5 per oyster during their happy hour. We both preferred the taste and texture of their east coast oysters, which had a nice buttery texture. Our intention was to hang out a bit, so we also ordered their fried pickles, which were also a part of their happy hour deal. The breading on the pickles was not overdone and they were not overly greasy like some friend foods can be. As a main, I ordered the Seared Georges Bank Scallops & Applewood Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. This came with mashed potatoes and spinach that were covered in a nice sauce. Sometimes bacon wrapped things are a little too soft/chewy for my taste, but these were cooked nicely. My husband ordered the Mexican Chargrilled Grouper, which was a special of the night. It did not have a chargrilled taste/scent and there was little to no flavor (we have a heavy taste at times). On our last visit he got their Blackened Rainbow Trout, and that was way more flavorful and worth ordering again. We are pretty picky with cocktails and did not like their old fashion. Their was not much depth of flavor and it was overly bitter. We didn't try any other cocktails, so that is the only one I can comment on.
