    Whiting + Mac & cheese + Coleslaw
    Ailun H.

My friend had First Impression saved on her list, and we made plans to check it out a couple Fridays go for lunch. It's carry-out only and located on the top of mini hill with some auto repair shops surrounding it. Parking was a bit stressful, but the promise of good food made it worth it. The menu was pretty straightforward, and we got our food after a short wait. DINNER: WHITING - 20 + two sides: mac & cheese, coleslaw The fried whiting fish was thin, but perfectly crispy (even after a 20 minute car ride) and well-seasoned. Each bite was flavorful. The mac & cheese actually tasted 3D, unlike the bland, powdered cheese that is used at most places. It was on the thicker and chunkier side, the more I ate, the more addictive it got. The coleslaw was very refreshing and not too creamy. The portions were large, and my friend and I were full after sharing the platter. BREAD PUDDING - 4 This was fine, but not out of the ordinary. Probably wouldn't get it again. Overall, this is a hidden gem that is worth going to. I was worried the fried foods and heavier sides would irritate my stomach's sensitivity, but none of that happened here! Will definitely be back for other entrees and sides!

Maybe it's just me, but I've had a hard time finding good Soul Food in Northern Virginia. So I was glad to find First Impression. It's a carry-out restaurant located on a strip of auto repair shops. The service was really friendly and prompt. They have a steady menu and alternating daily specialties. I ordered the jumbo fried shrimp dinner with collard greens and onion rings as well as the fried chicken wing dinner with Mac and cheese and collard greens along with a slice of red velvety cake. Everything was seasoned perfectly and delicious. It's a no frills kind of place but the food is spectacular. The pricing is reasonable and the portions are generous. There's plenty of parking available as well. I think I've found my new go to spot.

Fish with mac and cheese and greens

Little shop tucked on top of a little hill so the tons of parking. When we got there, the owner was taking a little break outside and greeted us in a very friendly manner, took our order, and started making our order. Owner was so nice, I'd go back even if the food wasn't good - but the food was really tasty! We both got fried fish with the following sides: yams, hush puppies, Mac and cheese, greens. The yams had a bit too much cinnamon but that was the only not great thing about the dish. The hush puppies were fresh and tasted like corn, the Mac and cheese was great, and the greens had good flavor. Of course, the fish was fantastic and portion size was generous. I'll definitely be going back next time I want some fried fish!

Oh my God. I can't believe I'm just now finding out about this spot. Soul food done right in Arlington! If you're in Northern Virginia and don't want drive too far for quality soul food, this should be your spot! I stumbled upon it on Apple Maps and am so happy I did. I ordered the fried chicken dinner with collard greens and Mac and cheese and everything was delicious. They also give you mumbo sauce with the wings which was a welcome surprise because it's not easy to find good mumbo in NoVa either. I called my order in and it was ready in 15 minutes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's take out only so don't expect to sit and eat there, but this should be your spot if you want soul food to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 10/10

Shrimp (no sides) with an extra shrimp or two.

First Impressions #WIN This is the type of fish I grew up eating. Simple, seasoned and fresh. We had the shrimp; they were big and good. The catfish was fresh and tasty as well. We didn't try any sides. I invite all of my yelp Elite, friends, and followers alike to try this place. Tips 1) [[HIGHLIGHT]]the location is on a hill, looks a little hood, but the people are really nice and and put pride into what they do - SUPPORT THESE FOLKS[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 2) parking on the hill can be a little scary; if you park in the front, back in if you can. There is also parking on the left (if you're facing the building - SUPPORT THESE FOLKS 3) the prices are great for what you get, especially considering how high of quality the food was. - SUPPORT THESE FOLKS

My impression of this place is not good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First Impression restaurant is a takeout in a small dilapidated dwelling.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This alone does not bother me for a takeout. However, The collard greens were salty; the whitings were too thin, curly, and salty; the shrimp was salty and rubbery; and the onion rings were too greasy. Nonetheless, the Mac & cheese was very good. I selected this place based on the rating which is baffling.

First Impression left a spectacular one on me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While it doesn't look aesthetically pleasing on the outside, the inside is full of love and soul.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was warmly greeted by Aaron, who went over the menu and some of the favorites with me. My sweet tooth noticed funnel cake on the menu, but I was told that would be available when it gets warmer outside (I'll be back). I ordered the whiting dinner with mac and cheese and collard greens. While waiting for my food, I browsed the oil collection they had. As someone who likes to layer oil with cologne, I appreciated their offerings. When I got home, I saw 4 generous pieces of fish, well seasoned and crispy. Some of the best whiting I've ever had. The collard greens were enjoyable, but the mac was out of this world. I was very happy I ordered an extra side of it. You can tell and taste the passion for cooking they have. They have a fan in me.

Randomly found this place on yelp as I was looking for a side of baked Mac and cheese and randomly stumbled upon First Impression. Definitely tucked away and a lowkey spot but that mac and cheese was so delicious! If you're looking for authentic southern Mac and cheese this is the place! Definitely will be back to try some different items here 10/10 customer service as well!

1st time trying; now loyal customer. The whiting dinner was excellent . Food was fresh, prepared quickly, hot and delicious. Definitely adding to my list of favorites. Staff was very friendly and appreciative. Bye Weenie Beenie

Fried porkchop with Mac n cheese, collard greens and gravy on the side. Straight fire!

Don't let the building fool you, it's the food, owner and staff -- all quality! The First Impression is the best impression. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibe was chill, music was dope.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Everything was straight fire! That fried pork chop was cooked perfectly--crispy, flavorful, and tender all the way through. The mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, and full of real homemade flavor. And the collard greens were seasoned to perfection, soft, savory, and absolutely on point. The gravy was delicious too. This whole plate was comfort food done right. My guy Aaron a real one, I think he's the owner, he's cool as fvck and helpful as this was my first time here. This is the soul food spot to hit up if you're in Arlington/Shirlington. I'll be coming back for the catfish and wings real soon.

If you want soul food so good, make it out to Shirlington, where Chef Aaron Green is cranking out heavenly creations in a hole in the wall takeout joint just oozing character and flavors. I was on vacation with family from Hawaii, where we don't get this genuine soul food. Virginia locals suggested this place, so we gave it a shot. Chef Green and his worker (didn't get his name) are friendly and efficient, telling us how their dishes were prepared and seasoned, making our choices easier. I opted for the smothered pork chops and chose collard greens and mashed potatoes as my sides. Having just came from Baltimore the previous day, I decided to also try a crab cake to compare. Pork chops and crab cakes anywhere else do not compare to what you can get at First Impression, and I'm a big supporter of the Manago Pork Chops at the Manago Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii. Make your way out here--totally worth the drive or flight, and definitely worth your money.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I walked in and was greeted and pleasantly surprised by the aroma. It smelled like grandma's kitchen.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had the fried pork chop collard greens, and mac & cheese, and old boy was I in for surprise it was worth the drive in rush-hour traffic from where I live to get those pork chops, mac & cheese, and greens and it taste like my grandma's cooking. My grandmother is from Mississippi and I swear that food was so good. Oh my goodness I couldn't wait to get home to get it

I ordered the steak (sliced steak with mushrooms) , and it was excellent ....well-seasoned, flavorful, and cooked just right. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. We also got the crab and corn chowder, which is always outstanding. Rich, comforting, and packed with flavor every time. Key lime pie .... on point .... oh and a salad. i got the chopped salad and added the ever so good goats cheese. Everything was EXCELLENT. What I appreciate most about Carlisle is the consistency. Whether I'm dining in or picking up takeout, the food is always good. Not just okay BUT actually flavorful, well-prepared, and satisfying. That's harder to find than it should be these days. I've been here many MANY times over the years and the experience is consistently excellent. The service is great when dining in, pickup is always smooth and efficient, and the food never disappoints. Carlyle continues to be one of those reliable places that simply gets it right. And whenever I pick up my to go order the bar is always crowded with folks looking like they are having a great time. That should tell you something. Highly recommended.

We were celebrating an old friend's birthday, so I wanted a special evening. We went to the Signature to see "Safety Not Guaranteed" which was so good and so much fun. Then on to dinner at Carlyle in Shirlington. Carlyle always pumps out some of the most satisfying meals. You are almost guaranteed to love what the kitchen presents you with. This event was no different. I started with the crab & corn chowder. Thick, luxurious, savory perfection! My main course was Jambalaya Pasta which was outstanding. The chicken was moist, the shrimp was perfectly prepared and the andouille sausage added a perfect piquant note. The creamy sauce finished a great dish. There was so much that I could not eat it all (and I usually eat everything that is placed in front of me). But the best - the ABSOLUTE BEST - part of the evening was our perfect server Sebastian. He was professional, friendly, fast, funny, helpful and everything you want in a server. Plus, he did it all with one of the best personalities that I have ever come across in a server. At one point, we were all laughing so hard, that he had to sit down because he was ready to fall over. He served us, yes! But more than that - he ENTERTAINED US!!!! How often has that ever happened to you??? It is a night that I will not soon forget! Sebastian is a smart guy who will no doubt go far in his life. But, for now, for right now, he is at the top of his game at Carlyle! If you love Carlyle, you will absolutely LOVE Sebastian. Please ask to be placed in his station. I promise he will not disappoint you. Thank you, Sebastian, for making my evening wonderful and for making my BFF's birthday dinner a stunning success, thanks to you!!!! I highly recommend Carlyle - and especially Sebastian - to one and all!

About three weeks ago, I left a 5-star review for Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar because, until…read morerecently, it had become one of my family's go-to seafood spots due to its convenience and generally good food. Before that, our preferred restaurant had always been Crazy Crab, where we consistently had excellent experiences. Unfortunately, after today, I will not be returning to Hook & Reel. I brought family members who had just driven in from Massachusetts and planned to treat them to dinner. There were four of us dining, and while three planned to order the All-You-Can-Eat option, one person preferred ordering directly from the regular menu. After we had already ordered drinks, we were informed by the manager, Vivian, that either everyone at the table had to order All-You-Can-Eat, or everyone had to order from the regular menu. There was no flexibility, no customer consideration, and no appreciation shown for the fact that we are repeat customers who have spent a significant amount of money there over time. In fact, several friends and members of our church began dining there based on our recommendation. What was most disappointing was not simply the policy itself, but the way the situation was handled. We were made to feel as though the restaurant viewed us as people trying to "game the system" over a few shrimp or crab legs, rather than loyal customers bringing business and referrals into the establishment. To make matters worse, this was communicated only after our drink orders had already been placed. Rather than create a scene, we simply paid for our drinks and left. We immediately went to Crazy Crab, where the experience could not have been more different. Staff members remembered us even though it had been months since our last visit. We were welcomed warmly, treated with dignity and respect, and received exceptional service from beginning to end. We gladly spent over $230 there instead. As a retired Army veteran, retired federal executive, business owner, and someone who frequently hosts family, friends, church members, and professional guests at restaurants, customer experience matters greatly to me. One poor interaction can cost a business far more than a single table. It can impact repeat business, referrals, community reputation, and future opportunities. From a business perspective, this experience should concern ownership. In today's economy, restaurants do not simply compete on food -- they compete on customer experience, relationships, and reputation. One inflexible interaction from management did not just lose a single dinner sale; it likely lost repeat visits, family gatherings, business meals, church referrals, and positive word-of-mouth within the local community. Strong businesses empower managers to protect both policy and customer relationships. Unfortunately, in this situation, customer loyalty and hospitality were sacrificed over what appeared to be concern about one person potentially sharing food. That decision ultimately cost the restaurant far more than it protected. If you want to dine somewhere where hospitality, consistency, and customer appreciation still matter, I would strongly recommend Crazy Crab. I truly hope Hook & Reel reflects on how situations like this are handled in the future, because no loyal customer should leave feeling disrespected after choosing to spend their hard-earned money at your establishment.
