Solid donut, but nothing extraordinary. There was a good selection when we showed up in the afternoon on a Thursday. We tried the pistachio nut old fashioned and regular glazed old fashioned. The pistachio donut was good, but it didn't have a strong/noticeable pistachio flavor which was disappointing. The glazed donut was as expected, also sweeter than the pistachio. A small take-out place for some tasty donuts!! The donuts are seasonal and range from $3-$6 with some interesting and creative flavors, such as Apple Fritter donut. I tried their Donut Ice Cream Sandwich (~$7) but went later in the day so they didn't have as many donut options (had to get Sprinkled) for the ice cream sandwich. Don't understand why we can't have an ice cream sandwich for some of the other donuts that don't have a filling! This was the closest dessert option to our hotel and seemed interesting. Stopped by one day to pick up some donuts. I got the glazed buttermilk, churro and pistachio. I forgot what I paid, but they weren't cheap. Pretty standard prices for these types of donuts I'd say. As for the donuts, I love the texture. That crisp exterior and cakey interior is my favorite. Obviously donuts are supposed to be sweet, but I just thought they were all much too sweet. I probably should've gotten the naked buttermilk instead. We did a donut crawl while visiting Chicago and stopped at Firecakes. It's a cute little shop with quirky flavors and friendly staff. No seating inside, just the donut case and counter, so we took ours to go and ended up borrowing a table at the place next door that hadn't opened yet as it was drizzling and we were looking for cover. To be transparent, Firecakes' doughnuts by themselves are not my favorite doughnuts in Chicago. I've ordered them twice and both times they fell a little flat for me. But, a doughnut ice cream sandwich from here is one of the best things I've eaten this summer. Currently, as of June 2022, you have 3 choices for doughnuts for sandwiches. A glazed yeast doughnut, a vanilla cake with sprinkles doughnut, and a vanilla cake with chocolate glaze doughnut. You have 3 choices for their house-made ice cream. Vanilla, chocolate, or lavender blueberry. You have 2 sauces. Caramel or hot fudge. I didn't get any additional toppings so I'm not sure which of those are available right now. I was not in the mood for chocolate and they were out of yeast doughnuts, so I ordered a vanilla sprinkle cake with vanilla ice cream and bourbon caramel sauce. I have no idea how I'm going to manage eating these things less than once a month for the rest of my life. It was so much better than I imagined it would be. read more

We were looking for some sweets after lunch in the area and came across Firecakes the day before so we stopped by. They have four locations in the greater Chicago area as well as a food truck that hovers around their location in Lincoln Park. The location in River North is a small shop with no indoor seating but a couple tables outside. We ordered the pistachio old fashioned ($3.50) which was just okay and didn't have much flavor, neither pistachio or old fashioned. It was green and looked nice but that was about it. This was a tight and small little shop that had no indoor seating. There were plenty of seats available outside during the warmer days. They served a number of different kind of donuts including seasonal ones. The ordering process was smooth and efficient. 4 donuts were tried, and each is described below. Strawberry Rhubarb Jelly ($3.50) - This was different with a rhubarb type of jelly. The filling was the best part here as it was a unique taste with the rhubarb element. Pistachio Old Fashioned ($3.50) - I was most interested in trying this one, but it was not good at all. There was no pistachio flavor to this cake donut at all. It was very plain. Peanut Butter ($3.50) - This was my favorite one tried. The combination of the peanut butter filling and the chocolate icing made for a pleasant treat. Honey Glazed ($2.95) - This was bad. There was not enough glaze on top. The donut was too doughy which made the presence of glaze crucial. It was a disappointment. Will I go back? Doubtful. read more

Have been here a number of times for various special occasions... One time I was meeting up with a coworker and we bonded over demolishing several donuts in front of a nearby office building. The crumb cake and the pineapple upside down doughnut- okay as for cake doughnuts, they are so soft, moist and the outside is light and crunchy.everything a cake should be and everything a cake barely ever delivers. The pineapple upside down name itself has always turned me off but it is a cinnamon sugar cake doughnut with a cute little pineapple cherry garnish. Amazing! The crumb cake came in second- so moist and perfectly fried. We have had their old fashioneds and other types of doughnuts. They are good but I have other picks for that type of doughnut in Chicago. I try donuts at every new place and trendy spot, each time I'm so let down cause they taste like a donut shop smells, some clever places can use topping for flavor but that base donut always leaves me flat and tasting commercial donutty, not Firecakes! Each donut I tasted was individually it's own flavor and texture. The orange poppy glazed made me come back for 2 more. From cakey to yeast to GF almond flour, each donut was a great and unique in both flavor and texture. I was also happy for the honesty from staff when I asked a question, they answered truthfully, never felt like they were making a sale. This hole in the wall donut shop is INCREDIBLE! We got two donuts and one cinnamon bun - hands down it was the best cinnamon bun I've ever had. The donuts were also at delicious. My partner got a medium roast coffee and said it was good. I got one of the latte's (I forget the name) but it has charcoal in it to help with digestion. They also added a shot of espresso for me. Maybe I'm just not a fan of cake donuts but I did not enjoy the old-fashioned donuts here. We got the pistachio, buttermilk, and naked and they were all too crumbly in the middle. The pistachio and buttermilk were also incredibly sweet and greasy. The naked was slightly better since it had no glaze, making it less sweet. Maybe their yeast donuts are better? Never had a pistachio donut before. After sampling the first donut from this place i never made it to the 2 spot i was supposed to sample as well.
