This was my first time trying this famous Chicago ice cream shop. I noticed there was always a long line, so I was curious to see what all the hype was about. Since it was such a hot day, it was the perfect dessert. I ordered their signature Rainbow co ice cream. Because I have a nut allergy, the staffs were accommodating. They explained that the ice cream that are out in the serving tubs had been exposed to nuts, so they made me a fresh serving using separate tubs and utensils to avoid cross-contamination. I appreciate their attention to food allergies. Overall, the ice cream was delicious and not overly sweet. It was great! I would definitely come back and try it again the next time I'm in Chicago. read more

Happy to see there is a location on Michigan Ave, however the place is small. Street parking is minimal. It's best to get here walking up to store. Note to customers to use your loyalty card. I was able to get savings on my total purchase. I really enjoy The Original Rainbow Cone and plan to visit the multiple locations of Chicago's nostalgic ice cream shops ("100 yrs old, having first opened in August 1926"!). read more

I recently visited Chicago with my son for my birthday weekend and finally had the opportunity to visit Original Rainbow Cone. After missing out during my last trip, I made sure to prioritize it this time. I tried the signature Original Rainbow Cone in a small size. I was impressed by the unique sliced presentation and the combination of five different flavors which are orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), strawberry, and chocolate. It was creamy, delicious, and a perfect afternoon treat. The staff was very pleasant and welcoming while we looked over the menu. While the shop itself is quite small and mainly geared toward grab-and-go service, we were able to find a spot outside to enjoy our ice cream. It would be a great addition if there were tables available in the future, but overall, it was a wonderful experience. read more

Pretty cool place to get your ice cream! I opted to do the full experience and get their iconic product. Despite all the different flavors, they all blended together pretty well. They're always busy, so make sure to expect waiting in line. I know Chicago real estate is hard to come by, so finding a place to sit was hard to do (but not the establishment's fault). Had a craving for a caramel sundae and they didn't disappoint. The ice cream and the toppings were good! They layer the caramel and I love that! They were very busy when we went in but they got the line down to nothing in no time. They had a great system in place and were able to get us in and out quickly. Been wanting to try this since last summer. Finally opens in downtown Chicago late summer 2025. And here I can in Jan 2026 enjoying a palate cooling delight during the freezing winter. However totally worth it. Besides the obvious eye catching presentation, the rich flavorful layers were not only delicious but also fun. The rainbow cone is comprised of five flavors (chocolate, strawberry, palmer house, pistachio, and orange sorbet) stacked on top of each other and served in your choice of a regular cone, waffle cone or cup. Recently went to The Original Rainbow Cone and had a delicious and unique experience. We ordered the Original Rainbow Cone, and since it was happy hour on a weekday before 3pm, the small was $5 instead of $5.99. The employee asked if we wanted a cake or waffle cone, and we chose waffle, but were not told it would be an additional $1, which essentially offset the happy hour savings. Not a huge deal, but it would have been nice to know upfront. Seating inside is limited, but with early March weather in Chicago, it was actually perfect to enjoy it outside without worrying about melting. The ice cream itself was fun and memorable. It was not quite as creamy as I expected, but each of the five layers had a distinct flavor and personality. As you make your way down, the flavors start blending together, which ended up being just as enjoyable as tasting them individually. The waffle cone, unfortunately, was the weakest part. It tasted fairly plain and was thicker than expected, so it lacked that crisp crunch. Considering it also cost extra, it slightly detracted from the overall experience. Still, I am very glad I finally tried this Chicago classic and would love to come back to sample some of their sliced creations, like the Cosmic Birthday next time. read more

They offer a good variety of ice cream flavors, ice cream, cakes, shakes, and mini donuts with ice cream. Of course, we just tried the classic rainbow cone, which was five flavors of ice cream in one cone. You don't think the flavors are gonna go well together, but they really do. If you are a fan of chocolate, this creation will hit the spot. I ordered a junior size and it was huge. A friend in our party had a nut allergy and the staff was super accommodating to ensure that my friend was cared for. They used new spatulas and got it in the back.
