I stopped by this chain ice cream place and although it's not the best rated one in town, it was on the way that day. They do not have sample spoons, so that keeps the lines short, unfortunately you have to hopefully pick the right one on your first choice. I ordered a single scoop in 2 different cups, chocolate and chocolate coconut. I preferred the one with coconut of course. The total wasn't too bad at $13. I visited on a rainy day and was the only customer. It happened to be Lollapalooza weekend, so there were ton of Christian protesters right outside being annoying and sometimes even harassing passerbys. I usually love fudge, but the Maple Walnut fudge was really dry. It crumbled when I cut into it. The Turtle Fudge I could have eaten all night. But that dry fudge was a disappointment. Apples: It's why I was there to begin with. I rarely go to Kilwins, but every time I want a caramel apple, it's the first place I think of. They never disappoint. With a salted chocolate dipped caramel apple, a pecan turtle apple, and a basic caramel apple, I was pretty much set. At 900 cals an apple though, yikes. Go easy on those apples. Service is great. I don't consider myself super old, but Kilwins makes me think of my child hood and my granny taking me to random sweet shops. I've only ever had their Superman ice cream, and it's delicious. They also get bonus points for carrying Superman. I gave the location 4 stars because they werent fully stocked when I visited. I wanted a Carmel apple as well and they were completely out. An employee has just started a new batch of Caramel to make them (yes, super fresh), but I didn't have time to wait. And I was disappointed they started making new once fully out. But hey maybe it's the way they operate. They product is great but the staff didn't seem "on it" If that makes any sense. Omg!!!! The fudge from Kilwins is sooooo good. I love the turtle and the chocolate fudge the best, but the maple and the peanut butter fudge come a close second. They have other very popular items such as caramel apples, bear claws, krispies and marshmallows. They also have icecream, which is a big win win! I usually take boxes of assorted fudges, but I also end up trying the bear claws, which are really delicious in my opinion. The service is fast and the staff of friendly. She asked if we wanted a cup to put my daughter's ice cream in because when she handled the ice cream to us it was dripping everywhere. I was grateful and said sure that's fine. We got to the counter to pay and the cashier charged us almost $8 dollars for an empty cup of nothing! Pretty much told us oh well we have to pay it. This place is ridiculously expensive - even at boutique ice cream shops in SF where the cost of living is unobtainable, they don't charge you $7 for a single scoop (at least not yet lol). That being said, the caramel and chocolate treats here are divine. I opted to skip the ice cream because i was shook at the price. Instead, I got a few chocolate covered goodies including the marshmallow, the macadamia nut turtle, and some chocolate covered sea salt caramel. Honestly, I was pretty upset at myself for not ordering more once I had devoured all of my goodies. Next time, I'd probably get a caramel apple and double up on all things caramel here. It is a high quality, sticky, chewy, luxurious caramel. The marshmallow was also really good too - definitely not your standard bag of jet puffed or w/e they sell at the grocery store. Service was a bit mixed. We came in about 40-50 minutes before closing. One older guy, who was sweeping the floor, made it super clear he did NOT want to help us and gave purposefully unhelpful answers. It would be understandable if we were just milling about without asking for things but we were literally asking for goods to purchase! This is my second time here. Oprah made this place more popular than before. When you walk into the establishment...you smell the waffles being made. The aroma smells sooo good. The chocolate is not sweet at all. They make their own chocolate. This was my first time trying their ice cream and waffle cone. The butter pecan was so good and the waffle bowl was just delicious. Since it's definitely changed, but their caramel has not! On our most recent trip we got a s'mores ice cream malt and caramel. The staff was very rude. I was reprimanded for taking a spoon. The one and only worker had her back was to us, while making a shake. The only other person continued to bag trash. 8 other people walked in ( 2 of which walked out). The man who reprimanded me, did nothing to help the solo worker. We stopped into Kilwins while in Chicago for my wife's graduation on Saturday the 3rd of August. This place is walking distance to the Bean near by, a big time touristy spot. They have tons of stuff besides ice cream here. You can see from the outside window or once inside too some of their equipment used to make treats, cookies, caramel apples, etc. They sell other cakes, pastries, etc also. We got my wife, kids, & mother in law ice cream on this day, all enjoyed it a lot. This is a must if you visit Chicago and have a sweet tooth. read more

Cute candy store with an old-time feel. My sister and I spotted this adorable shop while walking down the street. It's located close to the Buckingham Fountain. The store was neatly organized and clean. Prices for candy were on par with shops of this type. The ice cream prices seemed a little high. My favorite part was watching the gentleman in the window enthusiastically and artistically making candy. The caramel seemed to just flow under his guidance. It was a beautiful and fun thing to watch. Best of all, he seemed to really enjoy his job which made it that much better. The free aroma therapy (scent of candy) was great, too! Best Pistachio Ever! I have been eating Kilwins since we spent our summers in South Haven Michigan when our kids were toddlers. So this is a biased review, any Ice cream that reminds me of my children frolicking in the beach will always get 5 stars. I like the one in Hyde Park, MUCH closer to where I live, but I read on NextDoor.com that the downtown Michigan Avenue location was in desperate need of business. (it's Black-owned, just saying). Between the pandemic and some looting Im sure it's been a hard year. We made a trip to offer support and to get a pint of ice cream. (This stinks, it's national Ice CReam day and they are giving away the stuff to 2020 graduates and its POURING OUTSIDE! Maybe they can extend it another day?) Anyway we were happy to see people in there; we found out they don't have pints or half pints of ice cream, just quarts, and you can have more than 1 flavor in a quart! We wanted PEACH (they have it available in Hyde Park) and they admitted they HAD it but it was not in rotation at the time. (they could have taken a flavor that was almost bottomed out and swapped it but ok fine) We opted for Sea Salt Caramel and All American Two Berry pie. We have only tasted the Sea Salt Caramel so far, and it's good! We also got chocolate covered pretzels which were good but may have been sitting a little too long. We'd go back if we are in the area, but will make a priority to support our local/neighborhood businesses. (but apparently not our waistlines!) read more
