Finch & Fork is a gem within a gem, hidden in plain site in the heart of downtown. Many may be quick to dismiss hotel restaurants but THIS is the exception. The Canary is an epic hotel packed with design character and topped off with a beautiful rooftop. My recommendation is to come here for a special occasion weekend brunch. Look out the big windows as musicians play at the farmers market and enjoy a mimosa (they are one of the few places with bottomless). I have a special place in my heart for eggs benedict and appreciate that their bread is not soggy and the egg is prepared exactly as expected - timing is everything! read more

Entrees - Pork Chop & Short Rib Pappardelle Good sized portions, gratin that came with pork chop was unique and interesting, wasn't exactly sure how to eat it (dip the pork chop/eat by itself/etc) Desserts - Churros & Chocolate Torte LOTS of churros, artistic torte arrangement. Made a reservation for 2 to get some brunch before we headed out of town. Finch and Fork is located in The Canary Hotel. It was full but not overly busy. We had the Short Rib Hash and Steak and Eggs. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and the dishes overall had a light/healthy feel. Still the flavors packed a punch--especially the hash. Steak was okay but not worth the price tag. Service was great. Ambiance was classy and they even had bottomless mimosas that seemed to be popular. There's a bit to be desired here at The Finch, especially for us hotel guests. After a 3-hour drive, arriving at 3 PM and starving, it was disappointing that the only food options available were snacks that I would associate with a vending machine that I could only purchase by the front desk and nothing from the restaurant. With no other options, we had to find a bite elsewhere. This issue seems to stem from poor management rather than the staff. Thankfully, the place finally opened up. Kayla did a great job behind the bar and took orders for us lounge seated guests, not just those on bar stools. Since we had already eaten, we only wanted a few oysters and maybe a side dish. It's hard to mess up oysters unless they're off or someone doesn't know how to shuck them. However, a decent mushroom dish that's grilled? I'm 100% in! Sadly, the mushrooms were super slimy, and no amount of tarragon miso yogurt could save them. I love a great mushroom dish so much that I constantly ask my wife to try a bite (she's not a mushroom fan). This time, when she willingly wanted to try a bit, I had to advise her against it. The following morning, I thought it would be nice to start our day with a couple of screwdrivers. Jaime was aces at the bar. Despite the limited drink options available in the morning, which is odd given the breakfast cocktail menu in the room service menu, Jaime took care of us with chilled, laid-back, but customer-focused attention. The following day around 11 AM (the start of a local holiday called Fiesta), I wanted to order two screwdrivers, but there was no one at the bar. I sat there for a few minutes, watching multiple employees ignore me. When I finally asked someone by the host podium if I could order a beverage, I was told the bar was closed. This was confusing because if the bar is closed, how can I order cocktails for breakfast on the room service menu? I was told, "Well, it's 11:00 AM, so we're getting ready for lunch." I then asked if I could get a beverage for lunch, to which I was informed, "We don't have a bartender on Fridays." Completely confused, we went back and forth, and the host finally replied, "Let me get Jaime; he stepped out." A simple, "The bartender stepped out; someone will be right with you," would have sufficed. This really shouldn't be so complicated, but again, Jaime came to the rescue, sensing the silliness of the situation. Since we spent so much time out, our only chance to order food was this morning before checking out. We ordered room service: eggs benedict for me, and two poached eggs with bacon and toast for my wife. Both dishes came with smashed potatoes. While I enjoy smashed potatoes, these were so undercooked, bitter, and starchy that we both had to spit them out. The taste was akin to sandpaper and I literally could not swallow it. My ham on the benedict was so overcooked and dry it could have been used as flying discs at the beach. The muffins were cold and not toasted, and my wife's poached eggs were cold with toast so stale she asked if they toast their bread the day before. This was one of the worst room service breakfasts we've had in a long time, and I expected much more from The Finch, as my wife proclaimed that she had better breakfasts at Denny's. Lastly, on the menu, there's a disclaimer: "A 1% culinary service charge will be added to each guest check. This culinary service charge is distributed 100% to the culinary staff, including cooks, dishwashers, and hourly culinary supervisors to ensure competitive industry compensation for all of our valued culinary team members." My first thought was that this was incredibly tacky. Nothing says we can't afford to pay our employees like posting something like this instead of just raising prices a bit to address industry challenges here in California. However, after the meals we experienced, it's going to take a lot more than "competitive industry compensation" to make that food decent anytime soon. Thank you, Kayla and Jaime, you were the best part of our visits to the restaurant and the only reason I bumped this review to 2 stars. I hope your leadership takes a serious look at Kayla's no-nonsense approach coupled with Jaime's subtle yet attentive focus on detail and elevates both of their standings within The Finch and Fork. The management and leadership need to step up significantly to ensure the standards of The Finch to call it "a favorite amongst Santa Barbara restaurants" as this claim seems highly dubious. The issues we faced were clearly a result of poor management decisions and lack of adequate support rather than the fault of the employees whom the majority seem to not have any clear supervision. read more

The fried Brie was okay. 4/10. The winter citrus salad was weird. I was expecting a normal salad. Don't make it weird. My salad became finger food. And it didn't taste appetizing. 2/10. The butternut squash was actually pretty good. All the flavors went well together. 7.5/10 The steak was okay. My girlfriend ordered a medium steak and got it well done. Our server was professional and helpful, and told us that the menu had lots of food almost enough for 3 people. The service was attentive and friendly. / FOOD / SB Smokehouse Salmon Gravlax - Harissa cream cheese, pickled shallots, chives, lemon zest. Loved this! I can never say no to smoked salmon and all of the ingredients worked well together and the lemon zest was very refreshing. 3.5/5 F&F Eggs Benedict - Poached eggs, grilled sourdough, avocado, caramelized onions, Meyer lemon hollandaise, and added bacon. Surprisingly, this was my least favorite dish. They give a good amount of bacon (added cost), but I honestly did not care for the lemon hollandaise sauce. It was just too overpowering for the eggs Benedict. Also, it was interesting how the Benedict is served on top of basically an avocado toast. I would pass on this dish in the future. 2/5 Cheeseburger - Bacon-onion ham, cheddar, tomato, secret sauce. This was surprisingly my most favorite dish from here! I thought the burger was excellent. It was nice and juicy, fresh and we upgraded to the garlic fries instead of the regular fries which is always plus! 4.5/5 Overall, some of the dishes were a hit and some were a miss. We had a great conversation with the manager and she was genuinely interested in how we enjoyed our meal. We ordered the egg white omelette with asparagus and Boursin cheese - they also had these sweet potato steak fries type side and those were killer! The short rib hash was the favorite. But it was extremely rich! I would suggest having the egg white omelette or any lighter fish first as the short rib hash was rich and overpowering- we could barely taste the omelette. We were skeptical about eating at a hotel restaurant but this place was great. Menu was tailored to a handful of great plates for each category. The chef knows his flavor profiles and cooks things perfectly. We had the special of the night - red snapper - as well as Hamachi Crudo, deviled eggs, lamb chops and an amazing kung pao cauliflower which truly was the unexpected star of the evening. Specifically for their Mother's Day Brunch (their normal dinner has been good)... Had Mother's Day brunch which was below mediocre at best. We ended up spending $90 / person and for the food and service we received, I'd never go back. The server was nonchalant with things and didn't listen (ie they asked what kind of juice we'd want for our mimosas and after saying orange juice, they thought we wanted an extra orange juice for the table). For the price, the food wasn't anything special. It was a marketed as a buffet but ended up being a "choose one main dish" and help yourself to endless deviled eggs, salads, and stale desserts. They also seemed to be sort of shady with the bill, although they fixed it after we complained. We called the hostess a few days prior to ensure that our 1 year old wouldn't be charged a full buffet meal - the hostess confirmed we wouldn't be charged. After our meal, our bill showed we'd be charged for kid's buffet. We complained and only asked we be charged for a side of oatmeal for our baby and they complied but seemed kind of "let's see if we can get away with it". Thanks for fixing it at least. For the money you spend for their buffet, you'd think you'd get decent food and great service, allowing for a nice experience, but this Mother's Day experience lacked. After working for the hotel industry in the past, Santa Barbara has better hotels and restaurants where you can enjoy a special celebration. I do want to mention that the hostesses and the bussers were friendly and great. read more

Came by during happy hour on a Thursday and the bar and lounge were packed within a fun and lively crowd. It's located inside the Kimpton Hotel and about a block away from State St. (Downtown SB). There's a public parking structure just a few steps away from the restaurant. NOTE: Yelp business says they're open at 8am on Saturdays however when we got there the employee said 9am. I believe the same applies for Sunday. I did not see them seating anyone upstairs on the rooftop, as indoor dining seems to be open now. We had the nicest waiter, I forgot his name but he was great! He gave us suggestions and seemed to know the menu really well. What we ordered: Cinnamon French Toast: 5/5 Oh my god, this was so good! We're used to restaurants serving french toast with a large thick slice of bread, but at Finch and Fork the slice is like a regular sandwich bread but oh so tasty, done perfectly, not too sweet and topped with cinnamon and strawberries. The portion wasn't overbearing and was the best way to start our brunch. I highly recommend this Egg White Omelette (Wild Mushrooms, spinach, roasted sweet potatoes, Ricotta salata, and added Bacon and Sausage) : 5/5 I thoroughly enjoyed my omelette. I wanted something not too heavy, the roasted sweet potatoes were crispy and soft and the bacon and sausage overall made the omelette more savory. It was sooo good. I wasn't expecting the omelette to be so big, but this is definitely a shareable plate. I still had so much leftover after sharing half with my boyfriend.
