First time trying out Falcons Lair last night, we didn't have a reservation but thankfully got a table after a short wait. The vibe as soon as you walk in is upscale goth. It's different than any other restaurant I've been too, i love it! Our waitress for the evening was Lidia, she was amazing & very attentive. My husband got a Tito's and tonic, i tried out their lemon drop, both were so refreshing. Next we got ahi poke nachos and they are just as delicious as they are beautiful. I'm a saucy gal, i think it could have used a little bit more sauce but it was still great. For dinner we split the New York steak with fries. It's called something cool but i can't remember the name. Steak was perfect. I will say we both thought the fries could have been cooked a bit longer, it was giving freezer fries :/. The star of the whole meal was the Brussel sprouts we got on the side. They were glazed and DELICIOUS. I'd come back just to have those sprouts. We will def be back, 5/5 read more

This was my first time at the Falcon's Lair. A friend and I had planned a long awaited "Girls' Night" and decided to take the drive out to Ripon. I made a reservation on Yelp - check-in was smooth and we were seated right away. We were a bit surprised to be seated in the lounge area. The chairs were comfy, but the table was small and low (the height of a mini-coffee table) which would be fine for drinks and appetizers, but not for dinner. Having been at this location when it was the Canal Street Grille, the transformation was amazing. The interior of the restaurant has undergone an incredible transformation. The color scheme of emerald green, gold, black, and white lends is classy and glamorous with an old-school Hollywood speakeasy kind of vibe. The waitresses wear beautiful green flapper-style dresses that embodies the theme. You forget that you're in Ripon! My friend and I both started off with cocktails (a vodka soda and tequila soda) and ordered the Ahi Poke Nachos and a 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell. A 2nd small round table was brought out to hold our appetizers and drinks. Both appetizers were brought out beautifully presented - the nachos had a red rose bloom at the top and the oysters were in a lovely silver shell-shaped platter. For dinner, we both ordered the lasagna. The busboy had to bring out another small round table to hold our main courses. After all of the appetizers and catch-up conversation, we each had a few bites and then had our food packed up to take home. My lasagna seemed a little undercooked and a bit salty, but I was just happy to be there and didn't mind. The service started off great and our waitress was friendly and attentive. After the 1st 20 minutes after taking our drink and appetizer orders, we never saw her again and the food runners/servers took care of us for the rest of the night. They checked on us on regularly, refilled our waters, brought out a second round of cocktails, and our dinner. We appreciated the great service! Our waitress came by to drop off our check, but didn't offer dessert. It felt like she was in a rush to go home and came by 3 times to check the credit card bill folder to see if we were ready to pay. We weren't ignoring her, but just engrossed in conversation, so that was kind of a bummer. I would definitely come back again to try the other appetizers and items on the menu. We were ready to spend money here and definitely did! Our bill came to $230 with tip for 2 people, 2 appetizers, dinner and 4 drinks - pricey, but I'd be willing to give this place another chance to see if my experience would be different. read more

Once we were seated, our server Lydia introduced herself, and she was excellent. Warm and attentive. Our drinks came out quickly, and the food followed soon after. Everything felt smooth and well-paced, which is not always easy to pull off. She was also very engaging without being over the top, which I always find enjoyable. The lounge is where Falcon's Lair really shines. It has a stylish, elevated feel with just enough ambiance to make it feel like a night out, not just another meal. It is the kind of place that works just as well for a date night as it does for a casual evening with friends. It definitely has a speakeasy feel. If I had one small critique, it can get a little nippy in the lounge, but that is a minor detail in an otherwise very enjoyable experience. Some people prefer it a little nippy. Overall, I would give Falcon's Lair 4 stars. In my opinion, 5 stars means everything is flawless. That said, Lydia absolutely earned 5 stars for her service and played a big role in making the night memorable. As I entered Falcon's Lair, it was a total wow experience. From the speakeasy entrance to the moody lounge, the gorgeous dining area, and even the restrooms, every space is beautifully decorated and thoughtfully designed. My wife and I came to Falcons Lair the day before Valentine's Day to beat the rush, and it was the perfect date night spot. We made our reservation a week or two in advance and had zero issues getting accommodated. They had some awesome Valentine's specialty drinks. I went with the "Cupid's Dragon Kiss," and my wife ordered the Espresso Martini, then followed it up with a tequila mule that definitely packed a punch!! We started with the poke nachos, and man you get such a huge portion and full of flavor. You definitely get your money's worth. For dinner, my wife had the salmon and I treated myself to the massive ribeye with shrimp and mashed potatoes (see photo). The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. Easily one of the better ribeyes I've had. No room for dessert after that! The old Hollywood vibe really sets this place apart. The dark ambiance with classic silent films playing in the background (we caught snippets of The Wizard of Oz) made the whole night feel romantic and unique. Found this place online and I knew the vibe was going to be it! We made reservations for the dining side and then asked for a table in the lounge after we finished our food. You can order and eat in the lounge but the tables are smaller and you would probably get food on your clothes trying to eat there. We were scared that we weren't going to enjoy the food, like most places they look fancy and food sucks. This was NOT the case. I felt like we ordered half the menu. I tried to pick apart each dish but I couldnt find anything to complain about. The pizza here is way better than gold dust pizza parlor. Although same owners. I was told their ovens are better. I highly recommend the pizza. But dont get too full because you will want the 14oz rib eye. It was exceptional. Cooked to perfection medium plus, just enough charge on the outside and juices on the inside. Soft to the teeth and a bomb in your mouth of flavor. We also got a burger, asparagus. Mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, pasta dish and a NY steak. Again, cant complain. To top it off, service was exceptional. You will her checked on left and right by not just your server but multiple people. Service did NOT lack. Honestly more places should do it just like this. Upon finishing we went to the lounge for some drinks. The building is just beautiful inside every detail was noticed down to the exit sign that had a gold frame around it. Not an inch went untouched here. The bathrooms had beautiful touches of gold. The entry was beautiful, the music in both rooms were such a good choice. Oldies in the restaurant, jazz in the lounge. The whole vibe inside feels like a speakeasy -- dim lighting, vintage décor, old movies playing on a small TV in the lobby and a projector in the main dining area. We began our meal with the focaccia bread, served with a balsamic, oil, and garlic dipping sauce. Fantastic flavors. Next, we shared the chicken tortilla soup, which was packed with flavor and perfectly seasoned. For my main course, I ordered the 14 oz ribeye, requested medium rare, though it came out medium. Regardless, it was still tender and flavorful. On the side, I had loaded mashed potatoes and balsamic-glazed Brussels sprouts -- both were delicious. My wife ordered the beef short ribs, which came with creamy polenta -- another great dish. For dessert, we initially skipped the ice cream listed on the menu, but our server mentioned a few specials: peach cobbler and banana bread pudding. We could not get in the dining room so made reservations for the Lounge. We were taken back by the seating for dinner which is a Great Gatsby feel but low seating around coffee table style seating. Our server Katie came out and got us started with appetizers and drinks which were great. The ambiance is unique and not what we were expecting but turned out to be a great experience. We had the filet and it was excellent. Would definitely recommend the food as first rate but if you want more traditional dining make sure you are in the dining room. Came here to celebrate our friend's wedding on the day they were married, which we noted on the reservation. Despite this, we were seated in the lounge rather than the main dining room. Eating a full dinner at low lounge tables was uncomfortable and awkward, and we were never offered the option to sit in the restaurant side. Typically, when you choose a fine dining restaurant for a special occasion, there is at least some acknowledgment of the celebration. Unfortunately, neither the host nor our server acknowledged our friend's wedding. When we finally mentioned it, the response was a quick "congratulations," and nothing more. Even a small gesture or verbal acknowledgment from the staff would have made the experience feel more thoughtful. Overall, I had higher expectations for this restaurant. The lack of care and attention was disappointing, and for a $270 tab, we could have had a much better experience elsewhere. read more

My wife and I went to Falcon's Lair on Wednesday, March 11th for our usual visit to the bar for great cocktails and food. We have typically been going 2-3 times a month for the past 6 months or so and we usually have a couple cocktails, appetizers and a pizza or a couple entrees. We were quite surprised to find out that the food menu has been drastically changed and we were disappointed to find out that pizza has been completely removed from the menu with several other entrees added instead. We tried the lasagna along with a wedge salad and although the presentation was well done, the lasagna itself was just so so as it was a little dry and not as hot as expected temperature wise. The wedge salad was very good as expected. Maybe it was because the menu change had just happened (we were also there on Saturday night 4 nights earlier and the menu had not been changed), but for a new dish that was meant to replace a favorite option, it was a little disappointing. We will certainly try some of the other new offerings too, but I feel like the frequency in our visits may go down due to the food changes as sometimes you don't want two full entrees - where as a filling, delicious option like pizza that can be shared easily was often the best choice for the bar. The Cocktails were excellent as usual however and the service was quick and the staff very attentive. You can't get a better Old Fashioned in Modesto and the Whisky sour is fantastic too. Rum options are very limited unfortunately with only very basic bottom shelf options available. It would be nice to see some Appleton, Hamilton or Diplomatico rums, as the bartenders don't have all the ingredients to make a Mai Tai either. It's a shame the pizza options are gone because it's a dish that was easy to eat in the bar where an entree is much more difficult with the lounge chair and sofa seating style. If we wanted entrees, we'd typically prefer to sit in the restaurant proper while appetizers or pizza we'd eat in the bar. I'm not sure why the change was made, as pizza was a very popular choice for many people every time we were there but as the owners also have a pizza place nearby that serves a very similar pizza, maybe it was cutting into that business. Just a guess, but I think cutting out one of the most popular menu items to try and force a change in what your regular patrons should eat is a bit short sighted. For us, dining in the restaurant vs the bar were two very different experiences and now it's virtually the same, yet an entree in the bar is more difficult to do. Try cutting a steak if seated on the sofa, or not losing a fork of pasta as you lean over the small bar tables. For awhile we had hoped that Falcons Lair would be the restaurant that filled the void made when Redwood Cafe closed, but with the recent menu changes and apparent changes in what kind of experience they want to offer, it looks like the search for a excellent bar with matching great bar food continues. Even the Old Water Office in Patterson (the sister bar/restaurant to Redwood Cafe) made the same mistake of not adding back pizza to their bar food options when they opened and we tend to not visit as much as we normally would have done. read more

We were a party of 8, the Lounge was packed and booked so we could not move there. We would have spent a lot more money on drinks if we didn't feel rushed to leave. When you arrive, there's a waitlist podium to enter your contact info (though mine didn't clear once completed, but still processed.) I love the look when you walk in and beyond. Total speakeasy vibes aesthetically, without the secrecy (unless of course there's something I don't know about!) ;-) I'm not quite sure of the scent you're immediately smacked with upon entering, but I personally enjoy it. Arriving solo, I was seated at the bar (area to the right of the host stand). I'll have to take a wander in the future to see what the rest of the place looks like! The bar/lounge area is a vibe though, and seems to be a highly desirable section. I ordered a Phoenix Rising cocktail and Belle of the Bayou (shrimp and grits) to start. The Phoenix Rising with the mezcal and watermelon- the perfect pairing for a nice smokey treat. I also enjoyed the grits with the smokiness of bacon and tomato with the shrimp. Those two paired well together for me. And because I like to order bigger than what I can handle, I also tried the oysters with cheninc blanc Viognier. I always enjoy a good mignonette with the oysters, and today did not disappoint. It was the perfect end to my evening (rather than my starter).
