$268.00 for a contact lens exam…read more That is not a medical bill. That is a ransom note written in optometry ink. Two hundred and sixty-five dollars to look into my skull windows and tell me what shape of plastic disc belongs on my eyeballs. I did not walk into your office expecting a luxury spa treatment for my corneas. I expected a routine contact lens exam -- the same basic exercise I have had before, including through this same business, at roughly a quarter of the price. So when the bill came back at $268, I had the distinct feeling of being mugged in broad daylight by a phoropter. If this exam was going to cost $268, that number should have been made clear before the appointment began. Not whispered through paperwork. Not hidden in a fog of billing codes. Not revealed at the end like the final twist in a bad carnival scam. It should have been stated plainly, directly, and unmistakably: "Before we begin, this contact lens exam will cost $268." Had I heard that sentence, I would have stood up, thanked everyone for their time, and walked directly out the door in search of a business operating somewhere closer to reality. This charge is outrageous. It is excessive, poorly disclosed, and completely unacceptable. No reasonable person would expect a routine contact lens exam to cost $268 unless that price was made brutally clear in advance. I am asking you to review this charge and provide a fair adjustment or refund. And I want to be very clear about what happens if this is brushed off. I will not slink away quietly and absorb this nonsense like a beaten insurance animal. I will share an accurate account of this experience everywhere people look before choosing an eye care provider -- Google, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, neighborhood groups, local forums, and any other digital town square where people still value being warned before they are financially body-slammed over an eye exam. Call it social media shaming if you want. I call it consumer hygiene. I will not lie. I will not exaggerate. I will not invent a single detail. I will simply tell people the truth: I was charged $268 for a contact lens exam, the price was not made clear enough before the appointment, my prior exam through the same business was roughly a quarter of that amount, and I would never have agreed to proceed had I known the cost. This is exactly the kind of customer experience that deserves sunlight, noise, and a long paper trail. Review the charge. Correct it. Explain how a contact lens exam became a $268 ambush.

I was told by a previous doctor that vision therapy classes were the only way to help my condition and I did not have great success keeping frequent appointments that were expensive and didn't really work for me. I was blown away when Dr. Tran not only knew exactly what condition I had (convergence insufficiency), but told me about a new technology in glasses that could help me INSTANTLY with no classes. She got me fitted for Neurolens glasses and I will never go back to anything else. These glasses have prism technology that focuses both eyes on the same point so that they can work together - no more losing my place every time I look from one screen to the other. No more re-reading paragraphs in books because I lose my place every 2 minutes. And most importantly - I've had these glasses for over a year and NO MORE HEADACHES after working at my computer all day! I do research and data analysis for a living so being able to sit and read at my computer is a must. My only complaint is that now I get fewer steps in because I can sit and focus on my work and don't feel the urge to get up 100 times (yes vision issues can share a lot of the same symptoms as ADHD and for some reason we do zero vision testing in schools - just eye sight - I have 20/20 corrected eyesight in each eye, but my vision issue -eyes not working together- would have never been picked up in a routine eye exam). Sadly, like many things that work and actually make us feel better - insurance does not yet cover effective treatment for vision issues like convergence insufficiency to include Neurolens. However, these glasses were worth every penny. HSA money can also be used to cover these, which is incredibly helpful. I am eternally grateful to have met Dr. Tran. I've never met anyone more knowledgeable on vision issues and she is 100% the kindest doctor. She never appears to be in a rush and actually listens to what you say. She takes the time to explain everything, which a nerd like me appreciates. What makes this unacceptable is that nobody bothered to notify me. I only found out after repeatedly calling the office myself to chase down updates. They appear to only have one or two people staffed at the front desk, which is clearly causing a massive administrative bottleneck. I do not know if the issue is a lack of training or a total breakdown in their new corporate systems, but leaving a long-term patient stranded without vital corrective lenses right before a work trip is a massive failure. If you value communication, reliable ordering, and basic customer service, look elsewhere in Austin. The current management is dropping the ball.

I went to Eye Capitol when I needed an eye exam recently because I was tired of traveling across town for an appointment that I would need to schedule a couple of months in advance at the place that I used to go to. I don't have insurance so although I want to give my eyes the best care, cost is always an issue. I read in other Yelp reviews that the doctors and staff were very helpful for those without insurance, and I was happy to read that, as well as all of the other good reviews, so I took advantage of a Yelp voucher for a discount on the exam and called for an appointment. I was able to get in right away - yay! The office environment is cheerful and everyone was upbeat and helpful. Dr. Amanda Melendez saw me after a clinician gave me the initial exam and tests (I did the extra imaging of the eye since I have a family history of macular degeneration - all good inside my eyeball and fun to see what's going on in there!). She was SO PATIENT and thoughtful, hearing out my preferences and hopes (I wanted to go from progressive lenses to perhaps contacts), and offering solutions. I went home in a trial pair of contacts to test for a week to see if they are the right kind for me and work in my world. I am totally happy being a patient at Eye Capitol and am thankful to have found a team to help me take care of my eyes! read more

Update: Dr. Chavez personally called me the same day of the visit. He was professional and cordial. He explained what happened and offered a generous settlement which I accepted. There was no intentional misrepresentation, only a misunderstanding. It is in these problem situations that a true picture of a business emerges .And Eye Capitol passed the test with flying colors; I could not ask for more. I would go back and/or refer friends and family. The quality of the work was A-plus. Disregard my earlier entry which appears below. I am very dissatisfied with this business. I went to the place of business to ask price for two pairs of glasses. I was given a price. Later after checking with another optician where I was quoted a higher price I called Eye Capitol back to see if I had gotten the price right when I came by. It was confirmed. Today I went in and at one point in the process of ordering it was confirmed again. But at end I was told the price was almost double their thrice repeated price quote. This was either deliberate misrepresentation ( a violation of consumer law) or incompetence. Whichever, it left me upset and I told them so. No explanation or settlement was offered. read more

They have a great selection of frames too. Stephanie the optometrist rules and really knows her stuff. Same for Dr. Chavez. He is so nice and smart and down to earth. Same for the girl who checked me in and did my initial exam. Everybody here was so personable and funny and helpful. Also they laminate their intake forms so they can scan them and reuse them. Brilliant! And as if that wasn't enough, I even dropped 20 bucks cash and they CALLED me and said they saw it happen on the security footage and gave me my 20 bucks back. I mean, seriously. I recently visited Eye Capitol for my first eye exam in quite a while. The general store front and location are a little unassuming but don't let that sway you. The interiors are very nice and appear to be newly renovated. The staff was extremely friendly and professional. Dr. Chavez was one of the most informative and genuinely kind physicians I've ever met. I left there know more about my eyes than I had ever known before. He was able to determine that my previous prescription was too strong, over compensating for an astigmatism that was never diagnosed. Dr. Chavez and his staff are AWESOME! I highly recommend Dr. Chavez to anyone who wants good service. First off, they greet you right away and with a smile. Also, the place is clean. Unlike other places that you go into and notice that they kinda clean their desk/tables, but the rest of the place is all dusty. No, this place is super clean. They have a good selection of frames which you can browse while you wait. I liked the fact that they used all sorts of state of the art machines for part of the exam, instead of dilating the eye and using old techniques. Dr. Chavez was friendly and thorough. He showed me the images that the machines took on the monitor and explained to me in detail the results of my eye exam, it was very informative. He also did a lot of manual tests and asked questions i.e how far are the monitors I use for work, etc. I'm happy that I came here because I know that I will have the right prescription. It's super cool they offer camera image instead of dialiation, but I opted out because my insurance didn't cover the extra fee. (BONUS: you can take your time shopping at HEB while your eyes get back to normal) Glasses shopping... uhhhh, I was a tough customer. I knew EXACTLY what I wanted and wasn't finding it during my visit. After SO MANY frame vetoes (thank you Lori & Dr. Emily for your patience), we found THE ONE! They weren't exactly what I wanted, but damn close! And after owning them for a few weeks i'm VERY happy with my decision. They're really cute! I TOTALLY forgot to take a pic of my new frames or ask they're exact mfg/style info. I emailed Lori the next day to ask her which frames I bought. Oops! She responded very promptly with all the info I requested. AES is flexible with payment. I was able to put 50% down with remaining 50% due at pick-up. Even though I saved a lot with my insurance it was so helpful to split cost in 2 payments. My insurance didn't cover contact exam, but I can return within 3 months to have that done at an affordable out-of-pocket cost. My experience with Austin Eye Studio was fantastic and I can't recommend then enough. If you need new glasses... give 'em a try!

From the beginning, the experience was great. Communication before my appointment was clear, the office was easy to find with plenty of parking, and the clinic was clean, comfortable, and had ample seating. The staff completed all of the standard testing before I met with the doctor, and everything moved along efficiently. I saw Dr. Haumith Khan-Farooqi, and he was fantastic. He was kind, friendly, engaging, and listened to my concerns. I never felt dismissed or rushed. He explained my diagnosis, why surgery was recommended and what the next steps would be. As someone with anxiety, I really appreciated that he didn't brush off my concerns. Instead, he took the time to explain his experience with the procedure. That conversation really put me at ease, and I felt confident scheduling my pre-op appointment before I left. I was offered a sample of dry eye drops and a pair of sunglasses after my eyes were dilated (at checkout), neither of which had been offered at the previous provider. The front desk staff was very upfront about costs. They explained what their office would bill for and gave me the contact information, along with the diagnosis codes, so I could call the surgery center and anesthesiologist directly to get estimates for those costs. I really appreciated that transparency because I like to be an informed consumer and understand my financial responsibility before moving forward. My only suggestion is that after your eyes are dilated, you'll wait in a pretty bright waiting room. I recommend bringing your sunglasses inside with you just in case you have an extended wait in the waiting room. I accidentally left mine in the car so I sat with my eyes closed. This was the complete opposite of my previous experience. I left feeling heard, informed, respected, and confident in my care. I highly recommend Dr. Haumith Khan-Farooqi and the team at Eye Physicians of Austin.

Far West Optical does not care about your wellbeing. I went in for my eye exam in February and…read moreordered my annual supply of contacts, I still do not have them. Tomorrow is AUGUST. Far West has had numerous opportunities to make this situation right yet they continue to make me wait and use my old contact lenses. Here is the timeline below. After my eye exam, they order my contact lenses to the wrong address. The contacts are returned to sender and the office reaches out to me. We verify my address and they mail them again. This time, UPS was the courier and the contacts were marked as delivered with a blurry photo but they were not at my door when I checked. I communicated this to Far West and they refused to help, saying it was out of their hands because UPS had a confirmation of delivery. So, I opened a claim with UPS and they quickly admitted fault to my package missing because the blurry photo was not proof of delivery. This happened back in May. The problem now is that the claim has to be processed through the shipper's account for reimbursement, per UPS policy. Therefore, Far West needed to fill out and submit a 2 page document provided by UPS. Instead of doing that, Wendy at the front desk sent that paperwork to me and said it was not their responsibility. So, I filled out the paperwork for them and emailed it back on May 21st. I called on May 24th to confirm they had submitted it and was met with hostility. I was told I had to submit the paperwork to UPS, they would not do anything. Then they gaslight me stating that the blank paperwork they sent to me that I filled out for them was originally given to them by me, despite me having proof via email they sent me the blank paperwork. I called them out and they were rude, unaccountable, and hung up on me when I tried to add a UPS representative to the call. The next week, they agreed to work with UPS and submit the paperwork only after I escalated with UPS. After a slow back and forth of a few weeks waiting, UPS mailed a reimbursement check on June 13th for the contacts. At this point, it probably would not surprise you that Far West did not check the address the check was being mailed to and it went to a World Wide Express office in Dallas, the 3rd party company they use to create courier labels. It took over a month after the check was sent for Far West to get back to me and they are offering no solution forward, saying I will have to start the whole process over. They could contact their World Wide Express agent and find out where the check is, but I can't even ask them to do that because my calls and voicemails are not being returned and UPS cannot get in contact with them. This is a horrible office that will lie, drag their feet, and take no responsibility for their mistakes. I begged to have them order me the replacement contacts nearly three months ago when UPS admitted fault and agreed to a reimbursement but Far West refused. They will not order the contacts until they receive the reimbursement, a process they have dragged out for months. Their payment is more important than your healthcare. Wish I could recommend this place because Dr. Erik Haselhorst is wonderful but it is not worth dealing with the office at Far West Optical. I would look elsewhere, don't make the same mistake I did as a returning customer.
