Disappointed, only recently found out that 24/7 access requires contacting the site manager when we never had to do so before. And then, staff made an error by locking our storage, which was meant for the next unit over, not ours that we pay by direct payment monthly and have been since the start when the location was Diamond Head Self Storage. Office staff are helpful however the company as a whole is bad especially upper management. Units are advertised at a lower rate and guaranteed, every 4-6 months the rate goes up. In 1 year you will be paying $200 more than the advertised rate. Elevators work and don't work, and at times no elevators work and you cannot access your units. The office staff help as best they can but again, you are paying their high rates and they always have elevator problems. The district manager Mike has limited ventilation on each floor . One is paying for a "climate controlled" facility which is 80 degrees with no ventilation which will lead to mold. read more

Cameron was disappointing. I have 2 storage spaces on the same floor. I was moving into my unit and just placed it open. Cameron comes by and sees us 2 doors down and starts closing the unit door. I said excuse me but that's my unit and I moving into it. He continues to close the door. I walk over and ask him why he's doing that. I said we're moving into it. He said extremely CONDESCENDINGLY. It shouldn't be open .I again said we're moving into it thank you. He continues to disregard anything I'm saying. He attacks me with words about leaving the door open. read more

They will raise your rate every year. Started at $240/month for a 9x13 and now pay $340/month. The elevators frequently break and it is common to get stuck on your level for a long time while waiting for your turn on the one working elevator. In fact while I write this review I have been stuck so far on level three for 30 minutes. They only have a few carts so you may or may not get to use one. Can barely see in your unit because there isn't any lighting in the units. Oh, and they are closed on Sundays. read more

The place is clean, the staff is friendly and attentive, but their computer system likes to randomly suspend my account. My space is paid in full and I can't get my car out of storage because my access code doesn't work. This is the second time this has happened. Last time this same thing happened, I called their customer noservice 800 number and was given a temporary access code. This time, I was given an access number that doesn't work. Since I was here at 6:00 AM with things scheduled to do with said car. Now I'm sitting here for three hours tweedling my thumbs waiting for their office to open. read more

I figured it's about time I write a review for this place since it has become like a second home when we're visiting the island. When we found out we were going to be moving off the island, we knew we would need a place to store a few things while in the process of our transition. Hubby and I had a small, but strict criteria and after a little research on the computer it all came down to two places. On our list of must haves: a convenient location, climate controlled (indoors with A/C), well maintained and cost effective. The first place we checked out was Extra Space Storage. When we began looking they were just starting the process of completely converting into ESS (previously Diamond Head Self Storage (red/grey paint) The lady at the front desk was very helpful and understood our needs. She had told us they were running a special and the first month would be free. We had an idea of what size unit we wanted but still needed to see it in person. She then took us to see an empty unit to be sure that it was what we wanted. We liked the unit size and overall cleanliness of the building. She went over hours of access, elevator operation, carts, dollies, etc. The price was right and we signed on then. Since that day, we have been in and out of our unit several times without any issues. We have noticed they are revamping the office so the office employees are temporarily located across the loading dock until the office gets redone. I also noticed now the building has been repainted with their signature ESS lime green/ grey colors. The hallways are always clean and neat. I've been at the unit various times throughout the day and on weekends and I've always been able to get a dolly for hauling stuff. They have 2 elevators and have never had any issues with them. Depending upon the day and time, you might have a wait especially if others are using the elevators to do large moves. Usually, it's not a problem and they are available. There are about 3 or 4 spaces out front and I believe another 3? spots in front of the dock. They also have a garage area to store cars as well located on the side of the building. The only two slight downsides to this place is it's not open with 24-hour access. I've added the storage hours in the tips section. Also, beware of days with lots of rain as it's well known that the area floods pretty badly. I don't feel it's any issue with storing items/cars because the building is higher than the street level. Just something to keep in mind when entering/exiting the street. Overall, it's a good value, friendly and helpful associates, clean and well maintained area. I'd highly recommend if you are in need to store items or even autos! read more

This review is long overdue. Just want to say thank you to Justin for all your hard work and help. About 6 months ago my wife and I were on the mainland. We had an emergency to be able to store on of our service vehicles. Justin got us through it all. We signed papers in Kentucky for a parking space in Honolulu. Justin met with our technician, was very helpful when dropping off the vehicle. He really did go above and beyond. We showed up 2 months later and everything was in tact, just as when it was dropped off. Thanks so much for everything! This place is in a horrible location, potholed roads before you even get into the drive way, druggy homeless living in their cars just steps away, and routinely flooded with salt water (from ocean backup) when it rains. Elevators are always fussy and breaking down, and time consuming to access. Definitely clean, well lit and safe inside. A/C "temperature control" is set to bare minimum, so FYI if you store temperature sensitive materials (ie. Med supplies). I suspect they turn OFF A/C after hours, as several of my temperature controlled label products routinely turn red (too warm). While an OK location for less than 1 year, be ready for their famous 18% price increase after 12 months. I experienced this last year, and now in year 2 I get another 18% increase in the mail on a nondescript postcard mailing that's intentionally designed to look like throw away junk mail at first glance. The opposite of transparency! Not a local company, and therefore they could care less about locals and anyone with "longterm" storage needs. Go elsewhere when needing longer than 12 months, as their business model is solely "short term" needs. No emotion, just the facts. My own fault for not leaving last year (their hope!). If I could give half a star or none, I would. This storage location is horrible. Customer service sucks. They need to take a management and customer relation class. First I called the number provided thru yelp and got transfer to a call center in the mainland automatically. After I got quoted over the phone, I went to this salt lake location to check out the space that I got quoted for. The customer representative name was 'Ed' he was ok trying to help us, it seems like the workers here don't have any authority to function independently. All the questions we asked were answered with 'it's the corporate rate from the mainland and we have no control of it.' The unit we saw has a big pillar within the unit measuring about 1x2' so the space left wasn't a full 6x9 ' like what we got quoted for. The manager Justin was not friendly when I asked about this issue and I was trying to get some compensation on pricing for the present of the big pillar. The manager did not know how to handle the situation, he constantly talking while I was talking and trying to explain what I was told on the phone and promised a 6x9' Space for the price that I agreed with, without a pillar. His answered was 'well the person you talk to doesn't work here at this location and so she doesn't know!' So why does extra Space storage let us talk to a call center person and not a local Location for better and accurate service. And it's sad that the manager have no authority or autonomy to compensate the customer for such issue. We need every inch of the storage space, that's why we want to rent a space in the first place bc we need it hello!!!! Why cheat us out on the pricing!? Also, they fly their special offer flag outside in front of their building 'first month rent free.' Don't be fool by this, they will tell you the promotion is over however it changes from time to time but their corporate will not let them take the promotion flag down. And be careful of their lease, read the fine line; they have the rights to raise your rental space anytime as they wish per this is a month to month lease. That mean your next month rental could go up $10-$15. I had a semi good impression when I was on the phone initially with the call center person name Gina from the mainland about this company. But after I visited the location, there was a big flood right next to their building and the workers there including the manager was very unprofessional. I don't want to give them my business. As a recently retired military vet after 20 years of service, I'm proud to say that hands down the staff is the best you would ever find, in specific Edwardo Ortiz. When you first pull up to the facility your going to notice how clean the outside is. But once you walk in....Yea it gets even better. Edwardo "Ed" Ortiz is always there to greet you with the biggest smile and most warming welcome. Ed really is the real deal, he manages the front with grace and helpful replies to every question you have. He's always willing to show you the facility that you can tell he is so proud of (As he picks up trash he finds while walking to show me the storage units). Viewing the facility, you instantly notice that they have more than one cart for customers to use (even after hours). One of the largest oversized freight elevators you will find on island, with subzero A/C on all the time (feels real good after sweeting moving all your items). The storage units are very clean, and don't have that smell like old furniture and clothes like you find at other facilities. Plus they have the best military rates and policies that I have ever experienced traveling all over the world. I know my words might not mean a lot to some people, but if your looking for a storage facility that really has everything you need, 633 Ahua Street Extra Space Storage is the one for you. Local folks are always a cut above the rest. About 2 weeks ago, I had just flown home and was picking up my brothers car which is in storage. It was supposed to be a quick trip since it's so close to airport so I left my toddler and partner at baggage claim- thinking I'd be back quickly. It had been parked for awhile and so when I got there, the battery was dead. I had to do a ton of coordination to get this fixed and was emotional given it had already been a long day and my family was waiting. Josh was exactly how you would hope someone would treat your family. He checked in, ensured I knew how service providers could get in to support me, offered words of encouragement, helped me think through contacts and strategize a solution, and was just the epitome of kindness. He didn't have to be this way. He has a job. He CHOSE to be this way. What an incredible staff member and really that's been true since we started at this place. Just all around good folks. I just arrived on the island and needed a place pronto before my car arrived from the mainland. I reserved the space online and spoke with staff as I missed my reservation date. Edward and Justin were helpful and the underground garage looked clean and secured. Now I can storage personal items in the car. We've had storage space at this location for many years, starting out with Diamond Head Self Storage. The location near the airport is great for us since we only store our luggage, etc. to make our trips to Waikiki easier. Yes, it is expensive, and yes, the rates increase more often than all of us would like. Hawai'i lIfe is costly, additionally, businesses are now being hIt with increased charges due to the rail debacle. Everyone I've dealt with under either ownership has been helpful, most recently Edward. We were on our way to the airport and decided to move to a larger unit. He made the transition seamless, and we made our flight! Crazy idea at the last minute. I fully realize our rate will increase soon on the new unit, but having this unit and one in NJ with ESS, I asked the question up front and am prepared for the bad news. This company is rate increase happy. I still won't like it, that's just business and my choice to have storage space there. The elevators seem to be working better now than under DHSS, but I'm not there every week. The facility seems to be clean enough, there is pest control and we like having climate control. Electric bills in HI are outrageous, so there's that to consider. You hopefully get what you pay for. read more

So here is my review of Extra Space Storage. I have been in this building long before Extra Space Storage came along. Originally it was Diamond Head Self Storage. Then of course a Hostile takeover occurred and things changed. Originally when Diamond Head Self Storage owned and operated out of this building the entire 6th floor consisted of people who ran their business's out of the storage units. There was everything from food vendors, snack companies, construction business's and people who used the space for offices or storing stuff and working out fo their unit. Once Extra Space storage took over everyone was forced to shut down and only use the space to store their belongings etc. I being one of them. I used my space as a community space and office. I had to take down all my drywall shelving and furniture and lose my electricity and wifi. As much as it sucked its life nothing anyone could do. We were told we could stay and use the space as storage or put everything in the auction room and leave. I was one of the very few who stuck it out. With the new company comes new changes new rules and new staff. The rules are pretty simple and easy to follow but we no longer can hang out in our spaces for long periods of time in the day. The trash bins outside are gone so it makes throwing away rubbish harder for people who do not drive or who catch bus to and from the storage facility. There is no longer free coffee or water for the early morning folks but thats not really an issue. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. I actually feel like family when it comes to the staff. The building is maintained well kept up, everyone is nice follows the rules etc. But to be honest if I had a chance to move my stuff somewhere else I would but I don't drive and the location is convenient for me. I stayed back because of the really friendly staff and how clean the building is and how safe it feels plus its close to my house although right down the road from my house is their competitor, much closer but the staff at that place is not as friendly and it doesn't feel the same as it does here. Great Folks good prices and plenty of space to store all sorts of stuff. If your in the need to store something this place and location is highly recommended if you want to use the space for business purposes or any other purpose rather then storage its not recommended. read more
